Online Fundraising pages

Online Fundraising pages are a great way to encourage friends and family to donate with very little effort on your part! It is also a way for supporters who live far away to contribute without physically being present at an event. This campaign call went over common obstacles and tips and tricks for optimizing your online fundraising.

The call began with the Grandmothers campaign team giving a short walk-through of the basics of fundraising pages. A PDF document was shared that includes screenshots of several steps of the process. After the call the team added on more images to address some questions brought up on the call, this document is included below and can be found on the members only section of our website. A few key things to remember:

1) Pledge events are the most common use of online fundraising pages, but not the only one! Individuals can set up a personal page for a birthday fundraiser or groups can set up a general page for their group which can be linked on their Facebook or website. There are examples of each of these types of pages below.

2) After making a donation online, donors will automatically receive a thank you email from the foundation and a tax receipt by email, but it’s a good idea to thank the donors personally yourself, either through email, phone, or in person!

3) You will always get an e-mail notification when someone makes a donation to your page, and can see donors’ names and donation amounts in your donation history. However, donors can choose to be anonymous on the main page, or hide the amount they donated if they choose.

4) For team events, there is a designated ‘team captain’ who creates and personalizes the team fundraising page. Members can then join the team and create their personal pages. The team captain can also create accounts for other members who may not be comfortable creating their own page.

group we are able to ensure every donation that came from your supporters goes directly to the grandmothers campaign and your group is credited.

In addition to these points, many members shared helpful tips and solutions to common problems-

1) Personalizing your page:

When trying to personalize your page, a common problem identified was the webpage ‘timing out’, which occurs when the system automatically signs out the participant for “inactivity” which can lead to losing information you have typed on your page. One way to avoid losing important info is to click the “save” button often while you are drafting the text on your personal page, or to first draft your personal letter for your page in a word document offline, and then copy and paste into your personal page, .

2) Team captains:

Some groups expressed it was difficult to find a volunteer to run the pages as it requires some tech knowledge. To address this, groups have had their children or grandchildren set up a page for them, or partner with a local high school where students can provide tech support and gain school credit for doing so. In addition to this, the Grandmothers Campaign team members are always here to help you set up a page and happy to walk through the process step-by-step over the phone!

3) Uploading photos:

Photos uploaded to the fundraising pages must be less than 2MB, so if you try to upload a photo larger than that it will not accept it. One work around which was found was to open the photo on your smart phone, and then resend it to yourself, which will automatically downsize it to be less than 2MB. If you are having trouble uploading photos at any time feel free to email them to your region’s Campaign officer (or to [email protected] if you aren’t sure who it is) and we can upload the photo for you from our side.

4) Making multiple donations:

In order to protect you from potential fraud, the system will automatically stop processing payments if several are made in quick succession. This means if you or your supporters are trying to donate multiple times to multiple participants, the transactions may be denied. If you can, try to space out donations over a few hours or days. If you need to make multiple donations in a row, please call the office directly at 1-888-203-9990 ext. 0 and we can process the donations over the phone and add them to the thermometer on your fundraising page.

5) Sharing your page and getting the word out!

Once you’ve finished personalizing your page, the next step is to reach out to friends and family to share your fundraising efforts. To do this, you can easily copy and paste the link to your fundraising page into an email and send it to your contacts. There is also an email centre built into the fundraising pages which you can also use – you’ll need to first upload or manually enter the email addresses of your contacts in order to send email. If you use Facebook (or if your group has a fundraising page), you can also share the link to your page on Facebook to invite your friends to support your fundraiser. Another idea shared on the call was to include a link to your fundraising page in your email signature, so that all of your communications with friends and family include a subtle invitation to make a donation.

Receiving Donations

8

• When a supporter donates to your online fundraising page, they’ll receive two emails (within 15 minutes): first, a thank you letter from the SLF to acknowledge their donation, and second, an email with their tax receipt.

• Simultaneously, you will receive an email notifying you that a donation has been made to your page. The donation will be added to the “Donation History” tab of your participant centre (more on this in the next slides).

How do I thank my donors?

10

After a donation has been made, we know you’ll want to send a personal thank you as well. You can do this through your personal email account, or, through the Participant Centre. Here are the steps to thank your donors using the Participant Centre.

In this example, a donation has recently been received, and the homepage of the Participant Centre is showing/reminding you that you have an ‘un-thanked’ donor. Click the blue text that says “Send thank you e-mail” to send a thank you email.

Page 14: ONLINE FUNDRAISING PAGES Grandmothers to Grandmothers ... … · 03/02/2020  · Online Fundraising pages Online Fundraising pages are a great way to encourage friends and family

11

After clicking “Send thank you email” you’ll be taken to this page with sample fundraising emails.

Click the blue “Thank you” link which will open a stock email that you can edit however you like.

12

The first step, is to choose which of your contacts you want to send an email to (you can send to multiple people at once).

Donor’s Email will be here

If you want this individual to receive your email, click the check box next to their name first.

Then click the small green arrow pointing to the left to move it over to ‘Selected Contacts.’

Thanking Donors – Continued

Selected contacts – this box should contain the names of all of the people who you have selected to receive your thank you email.

Contacts Available – shows all of the contacts who are available to email. People in this box will not receive an email unless you move them over to “Selected Contacts.”

Page 16: ONLINE FUNDRAISING PAGES Grandmothers to Grandmothers ... … · 03/02/2020  · Online Fundraising pages Online Fundraising pages are a great way to encourage friends and family

13

After selecting your contacts, scroll down on the page to see the pre-written thank you email. You can edit this default text however you like. Note: The fields that look like this [%ContactFirstName%] will be automatically populated when you send the email. For instance, this field will be replaced with the first name of the contact you are emailing. We recommend keeping these fields – they are especially useful if you are thanking many donors at once.

You can preview your email before sending, send it immediately, or save it as a draft to send at a later date.

You also have the option to include your fundraising badge in your email. This adds an image of your donation tracker to the bottom of your email, so your supporters can see how close you are to your goal. You can remove it by unchecking this box.

Thanking Donors – Continued

14

If you choose to preview your email, it will open in a separate window. If you are satisfied with how it looks, click the tiny “x” in the top right corner, this will take you back to the previous page and you can send the thank you email!

How do I share a link to my page?

15

The link to your page is quite cumbersome by default. Click the edit button to personalize the end of the link to something your supporters can recognize.

You can choose your name, group name or whatever is most recognizable for your supporters. Click save to apply your changes. This link can then be posted to your social media pages, or sent to friends in an email.

There are two ways to find the link to your page. Click either “Get Social” from the menu bar, or “Edit Profile/Personalized URL”

How do I promote my fundraiser on Facebook?

16

Here is an example of what posting your personalized link to

Facebook could look like:

Clicking this will take supporters to your pledge page to make a donation.

Grannies for Good have “pinned” this post on their Grandmothers Group Facebook page so that it is always at the top of their news feed and the first thing that those who visit their page will see.
