From the Principal The Art Show What a fantastic event we had on Sunday! It was lovely to see the pride on the children’s faces when they arrived and saw their artworks on display in a real art gallery! The atmosphere was great, generating a strong sense of Brookvale community spirit. Thank you to all our families who attended and supported this event. Thank you also to our staff; a lot of hard work, planning and organising went into ensuring that the event was so successful. Special thanks to Ms Ramona Davey, our Visual Art teacher for her oversight, vision and inspiration! And huge thanks to George Katos, the owner of ‘If U Like Art’ for allowing us to use the gallery at no cost. George also donated four prizes to the raffle – thank you George for your generosity! If you were unable to attend, you can still purchase your child’s artworks from the Art room – Wed-Fri. All

remaining unsold pieces will be used for school-wide displays.

Raffle winners are: $50 vouchers for ‘If U Like Art’ programs – Steve Mulligan, Ruby Gatward, Leith Mulligan, Finn Ikin Mini Hamper – Connors / Roper family Large Hamper – Gooley family Prizes can be collected from the school office. Trivia Night Our next event is the P&C Trivia Night which is taking place on Saturday 24 November under the COLA. This is our first trivia night and we are looking forward to a fun evening with competition between tables! There will be two teacher tables, so come along and outsmart us! To book your ticket follow the link: www.trybooking.com/yird Crossing Safely Please ensure that your child knows how to safely cross the road. It is especially important for them to use their eyes and ears, and to understand that even when the pedestrian walk light is green, they still need to check both ways for vehicles. If you are with your child, hold their hand. Uniform Please check that your child is consistently wearing correct school uniform. Of particular note is that boys should be wearing shorts, not long pants in summer, and all students should be wearing black leather shoes. Absence from School and Punctuality If your child arrives late to school you need to accompany your child to the office to be signed in, or send a text message to the school mobile – 0436 695 071. If a child arrives late, on their own, the lateness is

Page 3: Only 43 sleeps until Santa arrives!...Only 43 sleeps until Santa arrives! Each term three newsletters are published and uploaded to the SchoolEnews app. Week 1 – The term calendar,

recorded as ‘unjustified’. Similarly, if your child is absent from school due to illness or planned leave, you should inform the school office on the first day of the leave, as early as possible after 8am. Absence and lateness that is unjustified will lead to a referral to the Home School Liaison Officer for further investigation. Please call, write or send a text message. One of our end of year awards is for 100% attendance – this is a great target to aim for! Acknowledgement of Country Recently a group of our students participated in a day at North Head with Mr Gigli, Aboriginal Education Officers for the Department of Education and students from other local schools. This event was organised by the Northern Beaches Learning Alliance (NBLA). One of the purposes of the day was to create an Acknowledgement of Country that is appropriate for our geographical area. Our school will now adopt the wording chosen by the students: Here at Brookvale Public School we gather on the Country of the Gai-mariagal Nation. I would like to acknowledge the Gai-mariagal people, who have been custodians of this land for millennia. I would also like to pay respect to the Elders, both past, present and future of the Gai-mariagal Nation and extend this respect to other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people present. For thousands of years Aboriginal people lived in harmony with the land. They used the resources they found, never taking more than they needed. Here, today, and always, we should try to continue the Gai-mariagal people’s tradition of living harmoniously with nature. We promise to always respect this land, by picking up our litter and taking care of all animals and plants. When you leave this meeting, take the time to slow down, look and listen to the plants and animals and see what beauty you can see in our environment. We are all part of the dreaming, which has no beginning or end, and we all have the power to change our future to make this land a better place. Thank you to Mr Gigli, Jake, Ella, Lily and Paige for contributing these beautiful thoughts to our community.

Mandarin Following extensive consultation and discussion, we will not be continuing with our Mandarin language program in 2019. This decision has been driven by several factors, not the least of which is the planned retirement of our Mandarin teacher, Mrs Alex Chen. Mrs Chen is a wonderful teacher and we will miss her greatly when she leaves at the end of the year. In recent years the Mandarin program has been financed through school funding. One of our strategic directions for 2018-2020 is to strengthen our digital technology programs, especially with the implementation of a new Science and Technology syllabus in 2019. This will require significant funding for purchase of resources, professional learning for teachers and for specialist support in the classrooms to implement programs including coding, virtual reality and green screen technology. Private Mandarin classes are still available in our school after hours and our feeder high school, NBSC Cromer Campus has a strong Mandarin language program. Leavers/Enrolments At this time of year it is important that we know about any students who will not be returning to BPS in 2019, and also any new enrolments that have not yet been submitted. We need accurate numbers to ensure that we have planned for the correct number of classrooms, teachers and resources. Please help us by keeping us up to date with your plans.

Kindergarten News This term in Kindergarten we have been learning how to write information reports. So far we have researched Owls and Penguins! Here are a few things we have learnt about these beautiful creatures:

• Both Owls and Penguins are oviparous which means they lay eggs. • Owls are excellent hunters because they’re able to fly silently and

see well in the dark. • Penguins are birds that cannot fly. • Penguins are aquatic and this means they love the water. They are able to camouflage from

predators lurking below and above them when they’re swimming. In Numeracy we have been learning how to compare the weight of different objects by using a balance scale and body hefting. We searched around the classroom to find objects of similar and equal weight. We also identified objects that we can lift safely without help and objects that we need to move using other methods such as pushing or pulling.

Year 1 News Year 1 has had a fabulous start to our final term of the year. We have been busy learning about flying in our STEM unit. The students made paper helicopters and tested their ability to fly. They then investigated how to keep an egg safe when falling from a height. They experimented with wrapping lots of different materials around the egg to see which one worked best. Our Adobe Spark videos are looking great as we continue to find out more about the history of our chosen technology. Students have been working closely with their maths partners in class as we explore problem solving tasks about patterns. We are learning about persuasive language this term and have been experimenting with writing persuasive texts. We joined in with some of the older students to write letters persuading Usain Bolt to visit our school. Fingers crossed we were successful.

Year 2 News It’s hard to believe how quickly the days are going! Students in Year 2 have had a very busy start to Term 4 and here are the photos to prove it! Mrs McArthur and Mrs Tully have been helping us to use Augmented Reality and Visual Reality programs in technology lessons. We have had a wonderful time exploring and creating these different realities. As part of our Water unit we participated in The Walk for Water excursion to Brookvale Oval. We each filled a bottle with water and carried it as we did two laps around the oval. We did this so we could have some small idea of how difficult it is for many people in other countries to have easy access to clean water. We also used this walk to raise money for Kenya Aid. Our next adventure to look forward to is Swim School, which starts Monday 19th November. Keep an eye open for our photos in Week 10 newsletter! Mathlete and Reader Awards Stage 2 News Stage 2 students are enjoying many fabulous learning opportunities this term. We’ve been learning about volume and capacity in Mathematics, including measuring, estimating and displacement. This involves lots of hands on activities with water – everybody is very engaged! Mrs McArthur has been team-teaching with Stage 2 teachers as part of our wonderful new STEM project. Students are using Virtual Reality to learn about friction, forces and other Science outcomes with an emphasis on future-focused technologies. We are creating our own three-dimensional worlds and tapping in to resources and expertise all over the planet and beyond! Through VR, we were even able to visit the International Space Station! We even invited Usain Bolt to visit our school as part of a persuasive writing task. As yet, we haven’t been successful, but neither have the Central Coast Mariners, so we’re not feeling too bad Mr Gray, Mrs Roberts, Ms Thomson.

Stage 3 News Stage 3 has had a busy start to Term 4. We have been learning about electricity in Science and have been working hard in groups to film and edit a video reporting on a recent Australian bushfire. We are looking forward to attending Surf Education at Freshwater next week and are currently working to plan the Stage 3 Fair, which will be held later this month. Our students have included some details about the exciting activities they will be running at the fair. Mr Gigli and Miss Kovacs

Canteen News Thank you to all the children, parents and staff who have made me feel so welcome since I’ve started. The kids have been so friendly and some of the Stage Three children have even started volunteering their time in the canteen once a week. They love the responsibility and have been really lovely with the younger kids on the canteen lines. Thanks as well to those parents who have volunteered their time in the canteen. It is such a huge help and if you are able to volunteer for a morning until 11:30 or even for an hour, it would be a fantastic help and your children would love to see you there. If you volunteer for half a day, you can order a full day’s food for your child for free. We have a beautiful range of healthy, home-cooked everyday items on the menu such as Fried Rice with Egg and Ham, Spaghetti Bolognese with lots of Veggies as well as a large range of Sandwiches/Wraps and Salad ingredients. We have started serving Chicken Burgers with home-made Chicken Breast Patties, Japanese Gyozas (Pork or Vegetarian) and home-made Pizzas. Nachos on a Tuesday are still very popular as are The Bakehouse Pies on a Friday. We are selling Birthday Cupcakes that we will deliver to your child’s classroom. You can order these on Flexischools or come and see me in the Canteen. Seven days’ notice is required for Birthday Cupcakes. Regarding Flexischools, just a reminder that Crunch and Sip, Recess and Lunch have to be ordered separately. If you use the top-up system with your credit card, you will only be charged for one transaction. Also, Flexischools now has an App https://flexischools.com.au/mobile-app for both Android and Apple devices. It only takes a few minutes to set up and is very quick and easy to use. While Flexischools is the preferred method of ordering food, it is possible to order food in the morning from 8:45 when the canteen opens. Children are starting to come in with the correct amount of money in bags which makes things flow a lot more quickly, especially on a Friday where there have been up to forty/fifty orders taken. I would greatly appreciate it, if you could try to bring in the correct amount of money in a bag. I will be selling bundles of bags for $2.00 and you are welcome to collect a hard copy of the Summer Menu to keep at home. The last day for Flexischools for 2018 will be Tuesday 18 December and the service will resume in 2019 on Wednesday 30 January. If you would like to volunteer, you can come and see me, call my mobile 0423 595 204 or email me at [email protected] I hope you all enjoy your week and thanks again for your support.
