7 6 SIXTEEN seems to be Michael Laverty’s lucky num- ber because he’s fin- ished 16th in four of the five MotoGPs so far this year. Going in to round six at the Gran Premio d’Italia TIM at Mugello the PBM rider was hoping to go one place better and score his first points of the season but yet again he was left one place short. Toomebridge rider Laverty aboard the Rapid Solicitors and Silkolene-backed Aprilia ART-powered PBM made a good start and by lap eight, he was up to 16th and on the verge of scoring points despite it being his debut at the track. As the battles raged throughout the field, Laverty continued to lap consistently but couldn’t bridge the gap between Colin Edwards who claimed 15th place. Laverty’s result means it’s the fifth time in six races that he has finished in 16th place and has yet to register on the scoreboard. But importantly the PBM team occupy seventh place in the manufacturer’s table and 13th in the team’s standings. Laverty said after the race: “Well you can’t knock our consistency! 16th place and the team gave me an improved bike this weekend with some updates and I feel we have done a good job with the set-up.” MICHAEL Dunlop took his ninth TT victory when he won Saturday’s Superbike race, and he then stormed to vic- tory in Tuesday night’s Super- stock race. The BMW Motorrad rider took control from early race leader James Hillier at Ballaugh on the opening lap and aided by two laps inside the old outright lap record, he surged clear and was able to control the race in the closing stages to take the win by 20.5s from Guy Martin on his Tyco Suzuki with Conor Cummins on his Honda Racing in third. There was also sensational news on the final lap when Bruce Anstey, outside the top ten on the opening lap after overshooting the Nook, tore round the Mountain Course on the Valvoline Racing/Padgetts Honda to become the first man ever to lap at more than 132mph with a final lap of 132.298mph. Hillier was quickest to Glen Helen on the opening lap on his Quattro Plant/Muc-Off Kawasaki and he led Dunlop by one second with Martin, a rapid starting Dean Harrison (RC Express Racing Kawasaki), Gary Johnson (Lincs Lifting Honda) and Dan Kneen (Cooks- town BE Racing Suzuki) close behind. Hammered Dunlop’s eighth TT victory was also BMW’s first ‘big bike’ win since German Georg Meier won the 1939 Senior. Martin took his 14th podium in second with Cummins three seconds further back after doing his all on the final lap. Anstey hammered home in fourth Rutter ensured it was a good day for BMW with a strong fifth and Michael’s brother William was sixth. In Monday’s Monster Energy Supersport Race 1 it was Gary Johnson who made the most of a gap in the weather to score a close-won victory. After four full-on laps the margin between Johnson and second placed Bruce Anstey was just over 1.5 seconds with Michael Dunlop claiming anpther podium but this time hav- ing to settle for third. Johnson’s victory was the first for Triumph since Bruce Anstey won the 2003 Junior on a Valmoto pre- pared machine in 2003. Mar-Train Racing’s TT debut was rewarded with a fine fourth place, recorded by Bradford’s Dean Harri- son in the Supersport Race 1 with the N.Ireland based team were the only Yamaha effort in the top ten. In Tuesday’s RL 360 Superstock race it was the man from Bally- money again, Michael Dunlop, who took his ninth TT victory when he comfortably won giving BMW their second win in four days. Riding the MD Racing machine, Dunlop faced a serious challenge from Monster Energy Supersport 1 race winner Gary John- son but the Lincolnshire man crashed on the run up to the Waterworks on the opening lap. From that point Dunlop was able to maintain his lead over second placed Dean Harrison and eventually came home 20.1s clear of the RC Express Racing by MSS Performance rider with Bruce Anstey taking third for Valvoline Racing/ Padgetts Honda. Dunlop was quickest to Glen Helen on lap one but it was close as only 0.5s covered the top four riders with Harri- son, Johnson and James Hillier all in touch with the Ballymoney man. The day was marred by another road race death, Karl Harris, 34, from Shef- field was killed during the Superstock Race following an incident at Joey’s on the 2nd lap of the race. ROGER Skeete returned to the top step of the Sol Rally Barbados podium for the first time since 2011, claiming his 13th victory in the 25-year history of the island’s premier event and extending his remarkable record. Paul Bird’s hopes of becoming the only driver other than Skeete to claim a hat- trick of wins were thwarted towards the end of the opening day. Having set fastest times on the opening nine stages, he broke two wheels and his suspension after clipping some cut rock. Bird explained: “I was carrying a little more speed through a corner when I drifted the slightest bit wide. I was hardly off line at all, but there was some cut rock on the exit, which I hit and it broke two wheels and the suspension. Gutted “The rally is the highlight of my year so I’m naturally gutted, but we’ll be back to fight again next year.” Bird’s demise promoted Skeete to the lead, where he stayed until Sunday’s cli- max at Bushy Park Circuit, despite only claiming two fastest stage times during the 23-stage event. England’s Rob Swann upheld UK honours as he and navigator Darren Garrod secured second overall in their Impreza WRC, finishing just 35 sec- onds behind the winners. John Powell and Hugh Hutchinson completed the top three ahead of Paul Bourne and Stuart Loudon, with Roger Duckworth and Mark Broomfield fifth. As for sixth placed Jeff Panton and Michael Fennell Jnr, it really was a case of ‘what might have been’. They lost over two minutes on the opening stage of the event when they went straight on at the first corner. And at the finish of the rally, they were just over two minutes behind the event winners. There was plenty of Irish interest too, with Moy’s Frank Kelly securing 11th overall on his first visit to the island. Navigated by Robert Cadiz, they survived a big moment during the second day to finish second in class behind local driver Andrew Jones, who had England’s Lindsay Pilkington calling the notes. Kelly explained: “It was a big butt clencher! We were too fast and went into a big four-wheel drift. We just missed a telegraph pole I thought it was all over. When it goes into slow motion usually it is!” Ban- bridge’s Mo Downey navigated Scotland’s Allan Mackay to class victory in their Anglia. It was just reward after overcom- ing a huge amount of pre-event troubles. Their engine seized at the previous weekend’s King of the Hill event, forcing the crew to ship out another engine from the UK. An injector was broken in tran- sit and it was only at the last gasp that they managed to get the car fixed in time. Brendan Brosnan and Sean Moriarty also claimed second in their class with Brosnan’s Peugeot 205, while John Hard- man took his Nissan Micra to a class win. Peter Gallagher, who decided to bring his Peugeot 306 to the island secured second in class. Unfortunately for Joe Gallagher and Annette Daly, their rally went from bad to worse. After their gearbox cried ‘enough’ during the King of the Hill, Gal- lagher reported overheating issues with his Mitsubishi’s engine once Sol Rally Barbados was underway. Shortly afterwards, the engine expired, putting him out of the event. Finally, Gary McElhinney’s hopes of a good result while navigating for Ray Brammer were dashed as they too were forced to succumb with engine problems in their Impreza WRC.
