DESCRIPTION

Before the commercial and impact factor journals ruled the publications industry, many institutes were showcasing their scholarly research output in the journals owned by them or by other institutes/societies. The National Institute of Oceanography, CSIR, Goa also had one such publication called ‘Mahasagar’ which ceased its publication in 1995. Here the article describes the online archival of this ceased journal using Open journal System (OJS). It also explains briefly the implementation processes & issues which were handled to make the journal archive system operational. The usage statistics of the journal shows that the scientific publications have value irrespective of its age.

Fate of institutional print publications

No of Institutional / Society print journal publications – decreased drastically the pressure of publishing in IF journals poor peer reviewing publication cost

Many print Indian journals have ceased publication due to one of the above reasons.

Print to online transition of journals

Users approach towards the information need also changed.

To exploit it, commercial publishers digitized their print back issues & made it available online.

But many non-commercial bodies could not foresee this from an economic angle

The articles in the ceased journals also can find readers if the metadata and the full text are made available online

Inspired by the Open Access movement, CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography decided to put its ceased journal – Mahasagar, archive on web.

Mahasagar - Bulletin of the National Institute of Oceanography, Goa

The first volume - 1968. Aim: to present Oceanography from a wide

perspective and to compile the information in a well-organized format.

Ceased to publish after volume 28 (1995). NIO library archived these published

volumes online on Open Journal System platform.

Metadata was present in CDS/ISIS database Exported in XML format using ISIS print option The XML must be in conformance with OJS DTD

Imported the XML based Metadata to OJS using XML plugin for record import

XML import can be made article wise or issue wise <article>, <articles> & <issue> and <issues>.

of the beach between Visakhapatnam and Bhimunipatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India to study the beach configuration changes and variation in grain size parameters. periodical beach profiles were taken at all stations at the lowest low tide level for a period of sixteen months from November 1973 to February 1975.

Conclusion

Ceased journals of yesteryears do have useful content Every document has its value to the needy users. Value of ceased publications cannot be determined until

they are made available online. Usage statistics proves that the scientific publications

have value irrespective of their age.
