Executive Summary

This report describes the dissemination activities carried out during the first year of the project,

including information on, amongst others, the print material produced, the websites developed, the

social media accounts established and how (well) they have been used.

The OpenCube consortium has been successful according to the dissemination plan for most of our

planned activities except for the organisation of own events such as webcasts and workgroups,

which we decided to postpone till the second year. This is because we collectively felt they would

come too early, the components not being production ready yet, and that it was better to collect

feedback first from the pilot sites and implement, based on this input, a first round of ameliorations.

An area where OpenCube has gained very good results is establishing connections with local

statistical offices and other governmental organisations other than the project’s pilots. Some of

them were very eager to communicate their specific requirements and needs and went even further

by supplying the project with relevant controlled vocabularies and other datasets.

The focus during the second year will go to organising webcasts and workshops, delivering much

more content on certain channels such as the RSS feed, the e-mail newsletter, vimeo, slideshare, etc.

and continuing our good relationships with our target groups.

1 Introduction

1.1 Scope and objectives

The scope of this report is the dissemination activities carried out during the first year of the project.

The report aims to describe:

the dissemination activities done

the dissemination activities planned for the near future

where the actual implementation was according to plan and, where not, what the reasons,

rationale were for the deviation

what needs to be (better) done during the second year.

1.2 Audience

This deliverable is intended for:

The European Commission

The project partners (CERTH, NUIG, fluidOps, SWIRRL, ProXML)

1.3 Structure

The structure of the document is as follows:

In the second chapter we give an overview of the dissemination activities and channels

used:

o Print material

o Websites

o Social media accounts

o Event participation

o Target group infiltration

o Publications

After that we indicate which of the planned activities as indicated in D5.2 have been carried

out according to plan.

In the fourth chapter we evaluate where we stand according to the success criteria

formulated in D5.2.

In the closing chapter we indicate what we need to focus on during the next year.

2.5 Target group infiltration

In our initial dissemination plan we considered following target groups.

2.5.1 Producers

On the publishing side we identified these as our main target groups:

The creators of the statistical data themselves

Those responsible for open data portals.

We succeeded to have presentations for and meetings with:

CBS (Centraal Bureau van de Statistiek), Netherlands

The decision has been made to organise a follow-up meeting. This will be combined with the

OpenCube presentation at PiLOD, April 2nd 2015, Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

DGSEI (Directorate General Statistics and Economic Information) Belgium.

This one was especially fruitful since they communicated a lot of requirements based on

their experiences and needs.

In addition they supplied the reference versions of 2 controlled vocabularies that are also

used by the SVR.

They are very eager to test and evaluate themselves.

All open data portals in Belgium (Federal, Flemish, Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Kortrijk,

Namur, …)

UK public sector organisations publishing statistical data: The Scottish Government,

Hampshire County Council, Glasgow City Council, North Yorkshire County Council, Surrey

County Council, Trafford Council, Salford Council, Manchester Council, Scottish

Environmental Protection Agency

2.5.2 Consumers

On the consuming side we identified following target groups:

Software Developers

Analysts

Researchers

Data journalists

D5.3 Interim Dissemination Report

Citizens

2.5.2.1 Developers

For the software developers we created a dedicated community website (cf. supra).

At upcoming consortium partner meetings we will invite the local open data enthusiasts and hackers

for a demo on the tools. We will try this out during our next partner meeting in Manchester.

NUIG is involved in the Apps4Gaps competition (http://vmuss08.deri.ie/apps4gaps/).

2.5.2.2 Analysts

We will be trying to reach analysts and data journalists by participating in upcoming events such as

‘R community’ and ‘data summit’ events.

We will be attending:

o The useR! Conference 2015, Aalborg, Denmark, , June 30 - July 3 2015 (ProXML)

o Data Summit Brussels 2015, Brussels, Belgium, March 5th 2015 (ProXML)

2.6 Code publishing

The source code of our open source components is available at https://github.com/opencube-

toolkit/

Figure 16. OpenCube GitHub Account

There is also an issue tracker in the same environment.

2.7 Publications

2.7.1 Academic

2.7.2 Business

CERTH’s 9th newsletter incorporated a brief presentation of OpenCube. The newsletter has been

forwarded to approximately 6500 enterprises and public agencies in Greece.

2.8 Press releases

The press releases describe the project goals and its accomplishments in a simple, jargon free and

attracting language. They target the international press in addition to the specialised national and

local press of the projects’ partners. They are issued at the start of the project and at the important

milestones.

2.8.1 At the start of the project

The first press release has been sent out to interested media partners. It can be found at

http://opencube-project.eu/press-releases and the list of distribution channels (who sent

what to whom) is kept in a Google document at

4.2 Discussion

We are behind the initial plan regarding events and content we promised to produce ourselves.

The main reasons are that:

We did not take properly into account in the original plan that it would take time to

create interesting results to discuss, present and/or promote.

As long as there was nothing interesting enough to show we decided it would be better

to keep the profile low since excessive publicity about ‘vapourware’ can have a negative

effect on people’s perceptions of a project.

5 Conclusion

In this report we gave an overview of the dissemination activities carried out during the first year of

the project.

OpenCube managed to produce a widely applicable range of printed dissemination materials:

leaflets, stickers and banners.

OpenCube developed more websites than initially anticipated. We have 3 now:

one presenting the project,

one aimed at developers interested in the open source OpenCube Toolkit components,

one as demo site utilising the OpenCube Toolkit components.

With a LinkedIn group aimed at business users we believe we are able to cover all audiences now

with dedicated content.

OpenCube established a presence at important media such as twitter, linkedin, slideshare and

vimeo, where the twitter account has been utilised most and the slidedecks published at slideshare

did get good exposure.

OpenCube partners have been attending the events as put forward in our dissemination plan, but

we didn’t manage to organise our own events such as webinars and workshops. The reason was that

we collectively felt they would come too early, the components not production ready yet, and that it

was better to collect feedback first from the pilot sites and implement based on this input a first

round of ameliorations.

What was very successful was the contacts established with several local statistical departments and

other government organisations. Those came up with requirements and needs in addition to those

collected at the pilot partners.

The consortium’s focus during the second year will go to:

organising webcasts and workshops

delivering much more content on certain channels such as the RSS feed, the e-mail

newsletter, vimeo, slideshare, …

continuing our good relationships with our target groups.
