Optical Illusions• An optical illusion (also called a visual illusion) is

any image perceived by your eyesight to be visually deceptive.

• There are three main types of illusions:• literal optical illusions that create images that are

different from the objects that make them,• physiological illusions that are the effects on the

eyes and brain of excessive stimulation of a specific type - brightness, tilt, color, movement,

• cognitive illusions where the eye and brain make unconscious inferences

• Perception refers to the interpretation of what we take in through our senses, in terms of optical illusions this means our eyes.

• Optical illusions occur because our brains our trying to interpret what we see and make sense of the world around us. Optical illusions simply trick our brains into seeing things which may or may not be real.

• In order to make sense of the world, our brains try to see patterns or shapes that we can easily recognise. This principle is called 'grouping'. Our brains can group things into four types:

• An optical illusion occurs because the different cells and receptors of the eye perceive images and colors at different rates, which sometimes result in a false image being relayed to the brain.

• The brain receives information from receptors in the eye, but in actuality, the eye only perceives a certain quantity of visual information at any given time, while our brain continuously decodes, constructs and reconstructs visual information, giving us the illusion of continuous sight.

• The right combination of colors, shapes, spatial relations, and other stimuli viewed by the eyes and reported to the brain during the relays of information can achieve the effect of an optical illusion.

Three men decided to split the cost of a hotel room. The hotel manager gave them a price of $30.

The men split the bill evenly, each paying $10, and went to their room. However, the hotel manager realized that it was a Wednesday night, which meant the hotel had a special: rooms were only $25. He had overcharged them $5!

He called the bellboy, gave him five one-dollar bills and told him to return it to the men.

When the bellboy explained the situation to the men, they were so pleased at the honesty of the establishment that they promptly tipped the bellboy $2 of the $5 he had returned and each kept $1 for himself.

So each of the three men ended up paying $9 (their original $10, minus $1 back) totalling $27, plus $2 for the bellboy makes $29.

Where did the extra dollar go?
