Health professionals are often asked to give oral presentations.

In college and professional schools, you will be evaluated in part on your skill in giving effective, accurate, and

engaging oral presentations.

Note: The opposite of sharp is dull. The Greek word for dull is …. moron.

Your topic will be a SKIN DISEASE

• You will pick your disease by lottery from a hat.

• If you don’t like your topic, you may swap with another student in the class right after the lottery. Those not present will choose from what’s left over.

• We will do three or four presentations each meeting over the next three weeks. The order of presentation will be based on the number on your lottery slip.

The assignment: 80 points.Read up on your disease. You should address: You should address:

• Cause (etiology) or risk factors/epidemiology • Clinical description (diagnosis, symptoms, prognosis)

• Treatment • Prevention

You will need two referencestwo references, one from a non-Internet source.

too detailed. Keep it simple… but accurate. Address the issues on the rubric. We don’t want a doctoral dissertation.

• You are excellent advanced high school students. But we don’t expect you have the knowledge of an M.D. – just a capable student.

• But don’t use words or concepts that you can’t define or explain.

• There will be a brief opportunity for Q & A.

Squamous cell carcinoma

• Squamous cell carcinoma is a malignancy of epithelial tissue. It can occur on the skin as well as in the esophagus, prostate, lungs, and cervix.

• Risk factors include smoking, sun exposure, and genetic predisposition. Recent organ transplantation is also a risk factor for squamous cell carcinoma. It can develop on mucous membranes of the body as well.

• It is usually treated with a combination of surgery, radiation, and/or chemotherapy. Immune stimulation (immunotherapy) has been done experimentally.

If you don’t know how to pronounce a word, you should never:

• A. look it up in a dictionary or medical dictionary.

• B. ask the instructor.

• C. ask a health professional.

• D. fake it. Actually no one will know the difference.

It’s a gram-positive gram-positive organism. If you don’t know what gram-positive means, don’t use

the word in your talk [or read up on it].

Speaking tips.

• 1. Be ready. Feel ready. This will put you at ease.

• 2. Don’t mumble or look down at your paper.

• 3. Practice a couple of times at home.

• 4. Have a classmate to operate the PP slides for you. Have someone else pass out your handouts just before the talk.

• 5. Be accurate and professional, but relaxed and informal. Have a sense of humor. Carmel does not have the death penalty.
