OREGON SCENIC BYWAYS PROGRAM
NARRATIVE: The proposed Marys Peak to Pacific Scenic Byway encompasses sections of state and local roads beginning at Interestate-5 in Linn County and terminating in Waldport. The Byway links Tangent, Corvallis, Philomath, and Alsea in Benton County, and Tidewater and Waldport along Highway 34 in Lincoln County, with spurs branching out to Marys Peak and Alsea Falls. This corridor will serve to enhance and protect intrinsic natural qualities, honor rural lifestyles and industries, and create new economicopportunity for adjacent communities along the Byway. Scenic Byway designation will also add exposure to the area through regional and statewidemarketing efforts, offering new and repeat visitors ideas on how to patronize localbusinesses, access lodging, and find many of the natural attractions. There are many parks, marinas, campgrounds, improved and unimproved boat ramps, access points to trail heads, and wildlife viewing areas, offering unique outdoor recreation opportunities along this route. Travelers will experience a unique and active working landscape, outstanding natural beauty, and world-class outdoor recreation.
BENEFITS: • Enrich Travelers’ Experiences – The Marys Peak to Pacific Scenic Byway provides a unique alternative to the Highway 20
expressway for travelers looking for a slower paced and enriched route to or from the coast to visit the natural sites andlocal businesses unique to Highway 34.
• Protect And Interpret Natural, Scenic, Historic, And Cultural Resources – Scenic Byway status is expected to provide aunifying opportunity for communities along the route to rally for the protection and development of the intrinsic qualitiesalong the Byway.
• Add To The Abundance And Quality Of Life Of Communities – Most communities along the Scenic Byway want to seeincremental and organic development of their communities and business opportunities. Scenic Byway status provides thatkind of opportunity, where communities and businesses can grow with the increased patronage of Byway travelers.
