WHOCAN BEA DONOR?

Anyone from a child to an old person. Even if you have had a serious illness in the past, you can still become a donor under the right

circumstances.

CAN PEOPLE BUYOR SELL ORGANS?

 No. The "Transplantation of Human Organs Act" prohibits any commercial dealings in organs and makes this a punishable offence..

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BRAIN DEATH AND COMA?

Coma is a state of unconsciousness that occurs because the brain is injured in some way. The brain still functions and this can be seen in

the tests that are performed. The person will be able to breathe on his own without the help of a respirator. The brain, in fact, may heal.

WHO WILL RECEIVE THE ORGANS?

Recipients are chosen on the grounds of need, longest waiting time and by blood group and i f necessary, by tissue characteristics. There

is a waiting list for organ transplants because demand exceeds supply.

WHAT ARE THE COSTS OF TRANSPLANTATION?

Kidney transplant - Rs. 1-1.5 Lakhs approx

Heart transplant - Rs. 10 Lakhs approx

Liver Transplant - Rs. 15 - 20 Lakhs approx

AFTER BRAIN DEATH HAS BEEN DECLARED AND THE FAMILY DECIDES TO DONATE THE ORGANS, WHO

BEARS THE SUBSEQUENTCOSTS OF MAINTAINING THE DONOR UNTIL ORGAN REMOVAL?

Certain hospitals would bear the cost. Apparently some of the hospital pass the charges on to the recipients.

FAQ's Organ Donation1. Blood donation is the most common form of  organ 

donation as blood is a f luid organ

2. It is possible to transplant approximately 25 different organs and tissues including bone 

and cartilage, vein, sk in, heart valves, middle ear bones, Bone Marrow, corneas (eyes),

hearts, heart-lung. Kidney, liver, lung and pancreas.

3. Acceptable organ donors can range from a newborn to a senior citizen.

4. Organ Donors are people in good health who have died suddenly, possibly through 

accidents or brain hemorrhage and have been declared "Brain Dead". In this situation 

the brain function has permanently ceased but the heart and lungs continue to function 

with the use of  artificial life supports.

With advances in medical technology it is possible to transport organs hundreds or 

even thousands of  miles to a patient in another hospital for transplantation

5.In India the passing of  the Transplantation of  Human Organs Act has made buying 

and selling of  organs an illegal and a punishable offence.

6. All the major religions of  the world favour organ donation.
