Who Is Country Heritage Feeds?Country Heritage Feeds (CHF) is a family owned and operated business located in Toowoomba, Queensland. Since being established in 1998, CHF’s focus has been centred on providing certified organic feeds with superior quality and nutrition. CHF’s dedication to this sees it supply feed to the nation’s largest certified organic producers through to the mums and dads with a few backyard chickens, right across Australia.

When purchasing any CHF product, you can rest assured that all grains used have been grown right here in Australia from certified organic farmers and that you’re supporting the Australian agricultural industry.

Page 3: Organic Poultry Feed

So Why Feed Your Chickens Certified Organic Feed? You’ve often heard it said that you are what you eat, so wouldn’t it stand to reason that if you enjoy eggs laid from your very own chooks you are in fact what your chooks eat? To some that may seem scary; however feeding Country Heritage Feeds certified organic chicken feed, guarantees you a ration free from genetic modification and/or ingredients grown with the use of harmful chemicals and synthetic fertilisers.

When you buy a Country Heritage Feeds poultry ration, you are doing two things. Firstly, you are choosing a healthy product that is not only beneficial for your chooks, but for you and your family as well. Secondly, you are helping the environment through supporting sustainable farming. All certified organic farmers employ environmentally friendly farming techniques with the use of organic inputs only.

Page 4: Organic Poultry Feed

Chickens are great pets to own and are relatively easy to maintain and care for. Some of the benefits of having a few chooks in your backyard are:

Eggs are extremely beneficial as they supply essential amino acids for humans, and provide several vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, riboflavin (vitamin B2), folic acid (vitamin B9), vitamin B6, vitamin B12, choline, iron, calcium, phosphorus and potassium. They are also a good food source of protein. Add all this to a chicken fed on a Country Heritage Feeds certified organic layer ration and you can add extra benefits such as omega3 enriched organic eggs.

Chooks by nature are omnivores, which means they love meat as much as they love grains and seeds. This is great for your garden as they scratch around and devour bugs, fleas, moths and any other creepy crawlies that may be around. Furthermore, your garden will receive the benefit of the world’s best fertiliser- chook manure. Chook manure has the highest nitrogen, phosphorus and potash levels of any animal manure in the world, and is a great way to organically feed your garden and in turn give you your own fresh organic vegies.

Unlike some other animals, chickens at any age are great pets around young children and are postman and meter man friendly as well. From day old chicks through to laying hens, your children will always enjoy boasting to their friends about their chickens roaming and growing in their backyard. The biggest thrill of course is when your chickens lay their first eggs; the excitement this brings will certainly be a cherished childhood memory for years to come.

If you think about it, organic chickens fed on Country Heritage Feeds certified organic chicken feed offer a great return on investment, and are easy to care for. For less than 20 cents per chicken per day, you can experience:

• Quality feed offering a nutritionally balanced diet• Healthy happy chickens• Organic eggs on a daily basis• Natural, organic, environmentally friendly fertiliser for your garden• Being a step closer to a self sufficient backyard.

Chickens are relatively easy to look after if you follow some simple steps.

It’s important to provide a safe place for your chickens to roost at night, this not only protects them from the elements, but will also provide protection from any wild animals that may be out and about. Your enclosure should contain a laying box or nest which will allow your chickens to safely lay their eggs. Keeping you chickens in a safe enclosure will also encourage laying to occur in the designating nesting box and not at random locations around your home, this will also protect your eggs from other animals such as dogs.

It is vital to the well being of the chooks to have access to adequate clean drinking water. This can be administered through the simplest of methods such as a bucket, but you must ensure it remains topped up to ensure ease of access. The best method is through a dedicated drinker, this is a simple device that can be purchased at your local produce/pet store and requires minimal cleaning. The drinker usually has a reservoir and keeps itself topped up. Advice should be sought on purchasing the best drinker for your situation.

Just as important as water, it is critical that your chickens have access to feed. Once again this can be done with a dish on the ground; however this will allow the chicken to jump onto the dish and flick the feed out causing mess and wastage. Dedicated feeders are designed to minimise spillage and loss and depending on size and number of chickens, will only need to be topped up every couple of days.

There are many reasons to have chickens in your own

backyard but the one that resonates through my business

is to produce fresh food that is nutritious and natural.

Chickens in the backyard mean organic eggs right? Not

always. Chickens enjoy greens from the garden; however

they need access to a balanced feed for optimum egg

production. It was challenging to find feed that was

guaranteed to be free from the extra’s that nature

didn’t intend you know… pesticides, herbicides and extra

additives. It was of utmost importance to me to find a

quality product for my clients that was truly organic.

After much searching, I discovered “Country Heritage

Feeds”. Their feeds are Australian Certified Organic,

meaning they are grown, harvested, milled and mixed

using only natural methods. I am now able to supply

my customers feed for their chickens that are highly

nutritious and atural, giving them the knowledge that

what their chickens are eating will truly provide naturally

enriched organic eggs. My chooks love it, my customers’

chooks love it and I think your chooks will love it too

After enquires from one our customers regarding or-ganic chook feeds, we sourced Country Heritage Feeds.

We thought we would test the waters with just a small order to see what the demand would be and were pleas-antly surprised at the reaction, especially from those people wanting soy free and vegetarian feeds. To the delight of our now many organic customers we keep a regular supply and extensive range of Country Heritage Feeds. Consequently we have very happy cus-tomers who are pleased with a product that is natural, free from pesticides, and thereby providing them with delicious organic eggs”.

Pellets-Are They Good For Your Chickens?Have your own In the poultry community, it has always been a well debated subject on what type of feed is best

to be feeding the humble chicken, Pellets or Mash? While of lot of opinion is based on personal preference, there are certainly advantages to feeding your birds a pelleted feed.

Despite the two products being made to the same specifications, there are advantages to using a pelleted feed. These are:

Less wastage Because chickens are the way they are, the love to scratch around in their feed and generally make a bit of a mess. This can lead them to flicking feed onto the ground, (even from a suspended feeder). In this instance, a mash feed can be spread out on the ground separating the grains (coarser particles) from the protein and vitamins (finer particles). Because chickens have a very sensitive beak and generally feed by feel, more often than not the coarser particles will be eaten, and the essential protein, vitamins and minerals are left to rot on the ground. This results in the birds receiving an unbalanced ration.

With a pelleted feed, each and every pellet contains the same proportion of grains, protein, vitamins and minerals – this means that even if the pellet is dispersed from the feeder – because of its size, the chicken will eventually eat it and in doing so will receive a completely balanced diet with every pellet consumed. It also means a cleaner environment for the birds to live in.

Better digestionMany studies have shown that chickens can metabolize a pelleted ration more efficiently – this means more quicker digestion that can better convert the energy yielded from the ration. This improves things such as FCR (Feed Conversion Ratio) which means better growth rates and more eggs for less feed consumed.

Cleaner FeedPelleting is a relatively simple process, whereby the feed is conditioned under high pressured steam, and then forced through a die to form the pellet – this can offer greater bacteriological quality and lowers the risk of pathogens such as salmonella being present in the feed. It also can eliminate any infestation such as weevils and grain beetles that may be present in the grains without having to use any phostoxin chemicals and thus maintain its clean organic status.

So What’s the Advantage

DESCRIPTIONCHF Organic Chick Starter Grower Mash is a broad spectrum ration specially formulated for chicks, pullets and meat birds. Formulated using certified organic grains and protein meals; the CHF Organic Chick Starter Grower Mash is free from all forms of medications that may be found in other starter feeds.

APPLICATIONLAYING HENSUnlike other starter feeds, the uniquely diverse nature of this ration negates the need to change diets from a starter to a grower (pullet grower) part way through the growing cycle. This therefore avoids waste and the expense of a separate feed, as it can be fed to day old chicks through to point of lay hens (Approx. 18-20 weeks) or slaughter for broilers. (Approx. 10 - 12 weeks)It is important to ensure your chicks have free access to feed and water and are protected from any harsh environmental conditions. For very young birds it is necessary to keep them warm with a specialised heater lamp (or light), especially during the colder months. For laying pullets it is also advisable to begin blending the CHF Organic Chick Starter Grower Mash with your preferred CHF Layer ration at 16 weeks of age. This will provide the extra calcium and nutrients to assist with egg production.

MEAT BIRDSThe CHF Organic Chick Starter Grower Mash is equally adaptable when feeding meat birds, once again avoiding the need to swap to a grower ration during the growth cycle; allowing the same feed to be fed until slaughter. (Approx. 12 weeks).PRODUCT CODE

ORGANICChicken Starter Grower CrumbleDESCRIPTIONCHF Organic Chick Starter Grower Crumble is manufactured to the same specifications as the CHF Organic Chick Starter Grower Mash, except that the feed is presented as a crumble. It offers the same broad spectrum ration suitable for all forms of poultry through all growing stages. The crumble is made by finely milling the ration, conditioning it with steam and then pressing it into a pellet. The pellet is then put through a crumbler, which breaks the pellets into a more manageable size for the young birds to consume.

APPLICATIONPULLETSUnlike other starter feeds, the uniquely diverse nature of this ration negates the need to change diets from a starter to a grower (pullet grower) part way through the growing cycle. The feed also contains certified organic vegetable protein meals such as soybean meal, safflower meal, sunflower meal, fishmeal and meat meal; as well as other essential vitamins and minerals.

APPLICATIONThe CHF Organic Backyard Layer Mash has been formulated to a higher protein to that of some other standard layer feeds on the market. The mash provides the birds with all the essential vitamins and minerals necessary to maintain good health and to promote consistent laying performance and production of quality eggs. This includes well-constructed egg shells and a vibrant yolk colour.

FEED DIRECTIONSCHF Organic Backyard Layer Mash can be fed to birds at point of lay (18-20 weeks) but can be blended with CHF Chick Starter/Grower from 16 weeks.

Typical feed consumption is between 120g – 140g per head per day. The feed is best provided ad lib as the birds naturally regulate their consumption according to their energy requirements. A specially designed self-feeder is the most suitable method of doing this. To obtain minimal wastage, ensure that the feeder is elevated so the birds can comfortably access the feed, but high enough so they cannot scratch it out onto the ground with their feet. Always ensure that birds have access to clean potable drinking water.

DESCRIPTIONThe CHF Organic Free Range Layer Mash is Country Heritage Feeds’ premier laying ration. Formulated using the very best organic grains, this ration is used by some of Australia’s leading organic egg producers whose eggs can be purchased in retail outlets all over the nation.

APPLICATIONBecause of its high specification, the CHF Organic Free Range Layer Mash is ideal for large flocks of birds, or birds that are kept in small backyards with little or no forage areas. Providing a completely balanced diet, this high protein and high energy ration will satisfy your poultry’s daily nutritional requirements without the need for additional inputs such as vegetables and food scraps.

FEED DIRECTIONSCHF Organic Free Range Layer Mash is best fed once the birds have reached point of lay, (Approx. 18 to 20 weeks) although blending with the Organic Chick Starter Grower Mash from 16 weeks is advisable to assist with the transition to layer feed.

Typical feed consumption is between 110g – 130g per head per day and feed is best made accessible through a specially designed self-feeder. To obtain minimal wastage, ensure your feeder is elevated so the birds can comfortably access the feed, but high enough so they cannot scratch it out onto the ground with their feet. Always ensure that birds have access to plenty of clean potable drinking water.
