siemens mobilityThe European market has several different norms and requirements for the different countries. Siemens Mobility wanted to fit its X4 prototype locomotives with every imaginable option to be homologated at the same time.This, while eventually saving time (making each option required for any given country automatically homologated) meant a huge investment in time and effort to design, create, test and verify both hardware and software capable of responding to all the different national requirements & systems.Faiveley immediately brought all their expertise to bear on the problem: spearheaded by the centres of excellence, renowned for their ability to integrate electronics and pneumatics. Two particular areas: the signalling systems interfacing with the different specific national systems and the electronic system EP/EBO* requiring all existing system interfaces to be present on the locomotive, so

that any of the different coaches could be added and work correctly. This demanded the integration of multiple functionalities in just one component.The challenge met within the delay, today the homologation of one X4 locomotive model for all possible European markets is on line.

ChinaIn the early 2000’s Alstom sold a double BoBo locomotive to the Chinese MOR (Ministry of Railways) influenced by its European Prima locomotive technology, with a transfer of technology to the Chinese locomotive manufacturer CNR DATONG. Faiveley accompanied Alstom for this ToT, adapting its European brake and couplers technologies to the specific Chinese conditions.

This technology transfer required a total flexibility to follow the requirements of the Ministry of Railways, above and beyond what would be considered normal by many: with particular attention to local habits and expectations.Faiveley’s adaptability brought this project to a satisfactory end and has extended to working directly with Chinese car builders, achieving

homologation directly for over 500 locomotives.

Finally, new projects are now on line, undertaking even incorporating some very significant changes in the requirements of the MOR with respect to emergency procedures and matching the regional habits of driving the locomotive.
