English Language for Teachers (EL4T)

• EL4T is a scalable and sustainable English Language training programme focusing on developing primary and secondary teachers’ communicative use of English, primarily in the areas of speaking and listening while also enhancing reading & writing.

• Learning materials focus on functional English, grammar structures and vocabulary directly relevant to classroom teaching.

Teacher Education in Sub Saharan Africa

TESSA is a proven, scalable and sustainable teacher education solution for developing countries, transforming how teachers teach while they are teaching.

TESSA equips teachers with multi-media resources for use in the classroom, facilitating both pupil and teacher learning.

18 national and international organisations are using the TESSA Open Educational Resources in a variety of teacher education programmes.

English in Action (EIA), Bangladesh

• EIA aims to develop communicative English language skills of 25 million people in Bangladesh, including children, teachers and adults, in order to enhance their participation in economic and social opportunities.

• The school intervention part of the programme provides English language teachers with professional development on the job, with the aim of developing their communicative teaching skills. Further to this materials and technology are provided for use in the classroom.

• The intervention aims to reach 102,000 teachers and 14 million Bangladeshi school children by 2017.

EIA: Evidence of the Impact of the Pilot Stage

• Impact 1: Substantial increase in teachers’ spoken English.

• Impact 2: Substantial increase in pupils’ spoken English.

• Impact 3: Substantial increase in pupils’ participation in communicative practices.

• Impact 4: Both Primary and Secondary teachers English speaking proficiency had increased when measured after a year of participating in EIA.

MYTEC Model

• Overseas institutions are able to offer the OU module 'Make Your Teaching Experience Count' to secondary school teachers.

• MYTEC is a reflective module for accrediting teachers practice and participation in teacher development activities.

• The aim is to enhance the classroom impact and the professional practice of the teachers involved.

• Local tutors are recruited in country through a partner institution to deliver MYTEC and are monitored, trained and supported by The Open University.

• Materials can be translated and adapted for use in the local context.

• In 2010 237 teachers studied MYTEC overseas.

VITAL - England

• Vital is a Department For Education funded Continuing Professional Development (CPD) project for the 5-19 education sector in England.

• It aims to enhance the quality of Information and Communication Technology teaching in state funded education in England.

• Vital provides an online learning platform, with modules, forums, portals, online CPD events and materials. It includes free resources, including case studies from fellow practitioners and complete course materials from the range of Vital courses.

• Vital enables schools & colleges to engage in their own professional development at lower cost, better suited to local needs, and in a more direct manner than conventional course based programmes.

• More than 6000 registered users, a community which is growing all the time.

• The Arab Open University was set up to enable ‘Arab citizens, irrespective of age, gender, income, geographical location and employment to get access to higher and continuing education’

Breadth, depth and quality of curriculum:

• English for Academic Purposes module developed by the UKOU specifically for business studies students and delivered across a wide range of BA Business Studies courses in the AOU.

• Feedback on student and tutor experience has been very good.

• 4,000 student registrations on English for Academic Purposes modules in 2010

This is English, China

• The OU has been working in partnership with the Central China Radio and TV University, China (CCRTVU) since 2000.

• Together, the OU and CCRTVU produced ‘This is English’, a complete English language course for distance learning which takes learners from beginner to advanced academic level.

• The course consists of workbooks, audio material and TV programmes and is tailored to the interests and learning styles of Chinese students at different levels of learning.

• Over 550,000 sets of ‘This is English’ were purchased in China in 2010/2011
