D o you know what your purpose is in life? Do you
believe your life is a gift from God? Have you asked how you are called to serve God? The rich man in today’s Gospel had the opportunity to serve God and we see what happened when he ignored Lazarus. Be open in your daily life to see how you are being called by God. Join a faith-sharing group to discov-er the ways God can use you as an instrument. For information on OLG small groups, contact Nick Rawe at [email protected] or David da Rosa at 714-788-8648.

1913-1915). In the Catholic Tradition, responsi-ble citizenship is a virtue, and par-ticipation in political life is a moral obligation. “People in every nation enhance the social dimension of their lives by acting as committed and responsible citizens” (Evangelii Gaudium, no. 220). The obligation to participate in political life is rooted in our baptismal commitment to follow
Jesus Christ and to bear Christian witness in all we do. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us, “It is necessary that all participate, each according to his position and role, in promoting the common good. This obligation is inherent in the dignity of the human person. . . . As far as possible citizens should take an active part in public life” (nos. 1913-1915). Reflections from the Gloria Dei Choir For the 26th Sunday in Ordi-nary Time, the Gloria Dei Choir sings Paul Christian-sen’s arrangement of “Wondrous Love.” Paul Christian-sen (1914-1997) was the youngest son of F. Melius Christiansen, founder of the world-renowned St. Olaf College Choir. After considering a career as a concert pianist, Paul followed in his father’s footsteps, directing the Concordia College choirs in Moorhead, MN, from 1937-1986 and writing hundreds of pieces for his choirs. “Wondrous Love” is a Christian folk hymn originally pub-lished in a collection of camp meeting songs in 1811. The tune is of much earlier origin and is notable for its use of Dorian mode, which sounds like the natural minor scale but with the sixth scale degree raised. Folk tunes such as “Greensleeves” and “Scarborough Fair” feature the same modal scale. During Communion, the choir sings Richard Far-rant’s anthem “Lord, For Thy Tender Mercy’s Sake.” Farrant (c.1525-1580) began his music career as a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal, then served as organ-ist at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor for the rest of his life. He was also active in Elizabethan theatre, founding the first Blackfriars Theatre, and was the first English composer to write verse anthems (which feature the alternation of verses for soloists with sections com-posed for the full choir). The text is from the 1566 col-lection Lidley’s Prayers:
Lord, for thy tender mercy’s sake, lay not our sins to our charge, but forgive that is past and give us grace to amend our sinful lives. To decline from sin and incline to virtue, that we may walk in a perfect heart before thee,
—Kevin St. Clair, Director Gloria Dei Choir
Our Lady of Guadalupe is once again hosting the La Habra Art Walk. All art will be available for pick up at La Fiesta after 4 p.m. or will be available to pick up from the Parish Office after Monday, October 3. Our goal is to raise awareness of the contribution our Catholic schools have to the community in the areas of visual arts, theatre arts and musical arts.
