Dear Friends, The following is a letter I wish I didn’t have to write, but I want you to know everything I know about what’s going on in the parish. OLL is your parish and you need to know the good, the bad, and the ugly. Unfortunately, the bad and ugly needs to be addressed. We have had four break-ins in the Church during the past 2 weeks. Three of the break-ins involved the candle box money, while the fourth was an attempt to break into the SVDP Food Pantry. We have made four different Police Reports. We don’t know if these break-ins are the same person or a group of people. We are taking measures to prevent these break-ins in the

future, including getting four new collection boxes which are almost impossible to steal from. All of us need to be more attentive that when we are the last to leave the Church, that the doors are securely closed. I want to keep the Church open to all during the day. Unfortunately, all too many churches nowadays close their doors after the morning Mass because some people don’t have the respect for houses of prayer like they once did. Stay tuned! The second thing you need to be aware is that our Sunday Collections are barely paying our bills. The biggest expense we have as a parish is staff salaries and benefits, and if collections continue as they are now, I will be forced to cut salaries and benefits. I don’t want to do this, but I have no alternative. Ten years ago, we had over one million dollars in savings. Today, we have $400,000. We can’t continue to dip into our savings to pay off ordinary expenses. To make matters even worse, we owe the Archdiocese $50,000 for the Annual Appeal. We can’t continue to live like this. I prom-ise you that Father Manuel and I will live as simply as we can. I also promise you that no improvements to the Rectory will be made until the Church, School, Parish Hall, Convent, and Parking Lot are taken care of. I can only do so much with the money you give. If the giving continues like it does, we will live off the collections and only use our $400,000 in savings for emergencies. You are voting with your pocketbooks and I am listening. If there are reasons why you are giving less or nothing at all, I would like to know. If there are things I can do differently or the parish can be doing differently, I would also like to know. This is your parish! You should have a say on how it is run!

La siguiente es una carta me gustaría no tener que escribir, pero quiero que sepas todo lo que sé acerca de lo que está pasando en la parroquia. OLL es su parroquia y lo que necesita saber lo bueno, lo malo y lo feo. Por desgracia, las nece-sidades malas y feas que se abordarán. Desde nuestra incorporación a este país hemos ido creciendo en presencia e influencia. La primera obra lite-raria en español publicada en EE. UU., fue un sermón de don José Agustín Caballero en 1804. En 1808 inició la prensa hispana en EE. UU. con el periódico El Misisipi en Nueva Orleáns. Este fue el primero de los medios de comunicación en español en esta nación. En 1822 se eli-gió el primer político Hispano como representante estatal de Florida. En 1865 la primera oficina para la pastoral católica entre los hispanos nombró al sacerdote Gabriel Serrano pastor hispanorium (pastor de los hispanos) en San Francisco, California. En 1970 el sacerdote Patricio Flo-res fue el primer hispano en ser consagrado como Obispo en y para Estados Unidos. En 1972 celebramos el Primer Encuentro Nacional de Católicos Hispanos donde nos auto nominamos un pueblo en marcha. Y seguimos cami-nando.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION On this date in 335 two churches and a shrine erected by Constantine over the empty grave of Jesus and over the place of the crucifixion were dedicated. After these were destroyed by the Persians in 614, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, which still stands, was erected by the Crusaders in 1149. Today also commemorates the event that led to the building of the churches dedicated in 335: the discovery of the “true cross” by St. Helena, Con-stantine’s mother, in 326. According to one legend, St. Helena traveled to Jeru-salem on pilgrimage, in search of the true cross. Workers she hired dug through a pagan temple that had been erect-ed on the site of the Crucifixion by Hadrian and found three crosses. A dying woman was brought in, and touched by each cross in succession, the last of which healed her. Helena ordered that this cross be divided in three parts, one to be kept in Jerusalem and the other two to be sent to Constantinople and Rome. The pieces in Je-rusalem and Constantinople were ultimately lost. Slivers were taken from the portion that went to Rome until even-tually it was scattered around the world. Of course, the significance of the true cross lies not in the wood itself but in the burden that it bore. As a faithful Christian, what crosses do you accept in your life today?

Please join the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael to pray the Rosary on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, Tues-day, October 7 at 8:00 a.m., noon or 5:00 p.m. in the circular driveway in front of the Dominican Sisters Cen-ter, 1520 Grand Avenue in San Rafael. There will be refreshments and visi ng in the Gathering Space a erwards.

La leyenda cuenta que La Santísima Virgen se apareció a Santo Domingo y le dijo que el rezo del rosario transformaría el mundo. Por favor únase a las Hermanas Dominicas de San Rafael a rezar el Rosario en la Fiesta de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, martes 7 de octubre a las 8:00 am, mediodía o 5:00 pm en la calzada circular frente al Centro de las Hermanas Dominicas, 1520 Grand Avenue en San Rafael. Habrá refrescos y visitar en el atrio después.
