On Wednesday of this week, we will celebrate the memorial of the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, known for centuries as St. Anne and St. Joachim. From the earliest days of the Church, there been a great devotion to St. Anne, the maternal grandmother of our Lord Jesus. One of the major shrines dedicated to her is the Basilica of St. Anne de Beaupré in Canada. Here, many extraordinary miracles have been credited to St. Anne’s intercession. St. Anne is generally depicted as a mature woman with her hand on the shoulder of her young daughter, Mary. While neither Anne nor her husband Joachim are mentioned in the Bible, there are very ancient writings, particularly the proto-Gospel of St. James, which tell their story. It is said that they were an older couple, like Elizabeth and Zechariah, the parents of John the Baptist, who had never been able to have children. Because of their goodness and faithfulness to God, they were chosen to become the parents, late in life, of a sinless virgin who would herself become the mother of our Lord Jesus. It’s worth reflecting on this theme which is frequent throughout the Scriptures – the idea of elderly couples – Abraham and Sarah, Elizabeth and Zechariah, Anne and Joachim who suddenly become fertile and then bear children, indeed special children who have a unique role in salvation history. We live in a society which is all about youth and youthfulness. We spend millions yearly on creams and surgeries and procedures all meant to keep us young. As a result of this, our society does not value older people as it should. This is not true everywhere. Among the Chinese even today, also among Native Americans, and in traditional cultures throughout the world, elderly men and women are treasured for their experience and wisdom. Grandparents and great-grandparents are the ones who pass on the traditions of the past to their children and grandchildren. They also pass on knowledge and skills – traditional medicine, weaving, carpentry, and many other things that would otherwise be lost. We have to reach a certain age to gain a real perspective on life, and we have to look death and mortality in the face to finally discover the meaning of our human existence. I think that’s why such great figures as John the Baptist and the Blessed Virgin Mary are the children of older parents. In their wisdom, these parents know that their children ultimately belong not to them, but to God. So on this feast of St. Anne and St. Joachim, let us pray for older parents and grandparents, and let us honor the wisdom that age brings as we ask God to daily give us his grace and to increase his love in us. Fr. Ulysses

P. Ulises

NOVENA A NUESTRA

Señora, tráeme a tu Monte Santo
