Sunday Reflection

Brothers and Sisters,

The last two bulletins spoke of the first two days of the Sacred Triduum. We journeyed with our Lord through the Last Supper as he ordained his first priests and instituted the Eucharist and we spent time with him in the “garden.” Friday, we experienced his Passion and Death

as we venerated the Cross which bore our sins and prayed that others too may believe. And now in the third and final day with the celebration of the Easter Vigil, the climax of our liturgical “drama” unfolding comes to light.

Within the liturgy there is a great contrast between light and darkness. Darkness being sin and death and light being forgiveness and life eternal. There is also the contrast between those who do not believe and are in the darkness and those who believe and are in the light. We start outside with a sacred fire that lights the Paschal Candle. The candle itself is marked with the Cross, the A and W (beginning and end), the year 2016 and 5 pieces of incense (the 5 wounds of Christ). The flame of the Paschal candle, taken from the Sacred Fire, IS the Light of Christ, the same light that burns on the day of our baptism and the same light that burns on the day of our funeral mass. The flame is processed into the church which is dark. The single light that is Christ overpowers the darkness, and then that light is shared to all the baptized as the church is lit by the light of Christ that burns within us. A prayer, the Exsultet, is sung to speak of this wonderful light who is Christ.

The Liturgy of the Word (in its complete form) consists of 7 readings, 7 psalms, an epistle and the Gospel. The readings speak of Salvation History – 1) the story of creation, 2) the covenant between Abraham and God, 3) the exodus of Moses and his people through the Red Sea, 4 & 5) the prophet Isaiah then speaks of the covenant with God always being strong and of the waters of baptism to establish that covenant, 6) Baruch speaks of walking towards the splendor of the Lord and 7) Ezekiel completes the seven readings announcing the new heart the Lord gives us. The Gloria is then sung as the lights of the Church are turned on and the Epistle is proclaimed announcing Christ has been raised from the dead. And the Gospel speaks of the scene at his tomb as it is found emptied by his disciples. Christ is Risen… Alleluia. From the moment of creation to the moment of Christ’s life, death and resurrection, to the present day, God’s saving hand is at work. But, wait, there is more.

On this night, we welcome our Elect. These are the un-baptized (children and adults) who will experience the waters of baptism and enter into the life of Christ. They were in darkness, and they come into the light. Each one is immersed in the waters of baptism (3rd, 5th & 7th readings). From baptism, they receive confirmation, the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit, but also being sealed in their faith and covenant with God (2nd, 4th, & 6th readings). And this is all possible because we are his creation, made in his image and likeness, we all belong to him and we are “fruitful and multiply” as our Church grows (1st reading). The Elect are now called Neophytes from the words neo (new) and phytus (planted) meaning “newly planted” as this new faith has been implanted in them. The whole congregation also renews their baptismal promises as they hold a lighted candle and are sprinkled with the holy water of their baptism. This reminds all gathered that we are united to Christ in our faith and united to one another as a Church.

Finally, like all celebrations, it culminates in the celebration of the Eucharist. The Neophytes receive communion for the first time uniting themselves with Christ and the Church and we receive him again reminding us of the importance of the bread of life and the chalice of salvation that keeps nourishing and strengthening our life as disciples of Christ. Within the Eucharist, the Paschal Mystery is embedded and so in receiving Christ, we enter once again into the mystery of his life, death and resurrection which just unfolded before our eyes over this three day celebration. And the best part is… we get to enter into it all again every time we go to mass every Sunday or every day if we choose. This, my friends, is the beauty of our Church. En los dos últimos boletines hablamos de los dos primeros días del Sagrado Triddum. Caminamos con nuestro Señor hasta la Ultima Cena cuando el ordeno sus primeros sacerdotes e instituyo la Eucaristía y estuvimos con él en el “huerto”. El viernes, experimentamos su Pasión y Muerte cuando veneramos la Cruz la cual soporto nuestros pecados y rezamos para que otros también crean . Ahora en el tercer y último día con la celebración de la Vigilia Pascual, la cumbre de nuestro “drama” litúrgico sale a la luz.

Dentro de la liturgia hay un gran contraste entre la luz y la oscuridad. La oscuridad siendo el pecado y muerte y la luz siendo perdón y vida eterna. También hay el contraste entre esos que no creen y están en la obscuridad y los que creen y están en la luz. Comenzamos afuera con un fuego sagrado que enciende el Cirio Pascual. La vela misma es marcada con la Cruz, El Alpha y Omega (principio y fin), el año 2016 y 5 piezas de incienso (las 5 llagas de Cristo). La flama del Cirio Pascual, tomada del Fuego Sagrado, ES la Luz de Cristo, la misma luz que arde en el día de nuestro bautizo y la misma luz que arde en el día de nuestra misa de funeral. La llama es llevada en procesión dentro de la iglesia la cual esta oscura. La única luz que es Cristo supera la obscuridad, y luego esa luz es compartida a todos los bautizados cuando la iglesia es iluminada por la luz de Cristo que arde dentro de nosotros. Una oración, el Exultet, es cantado para hablar de esta maravillosa luz que es Cristo.

La liturgia de la Palabra (en su forma completa) consiste de 7 lecturas, 7 salmos, una epístola y el Evangelio. Las lecturas habla de la Historia de la Salvación -1) la historia de la creación, 2)la alianza entre Abraham y Dios, 3) el éxodo de Moisés y su gente por el Mar Rojo, 4 y 5) el profetas Isaías habla entonces de la alianza con Dios siempre siendo fuerte y de las aguas del bautismo para establecer esa alianza, 6) Baruc habla de caminar hacia el esplendor del Señor y 7) Ezequiel completa las siete lecturas anunciando el corazón nuevo que Dios nos da. Entonces el Gloria es cantado al momento de encenderse las luces de la Iglesia y la Epístola es proclamada anunciando que Cristo ha resucitado de la muerte. Y el Evangelio habla de la escena en su tumba al ser encontrada vacía por sus discípulos. Cristo ha resucitado…Aleluya. Desde el momento de la creación hasta el momento de la vida, muerte y resurrección de Cristo, al presente día, la mano salvadora de Dios está trabajando, Pero, esperen, hay más.

Esta noche, damos la bienvenida a nuestros Elegidos. Estos no están bautizados (niños y adultos) quien experimentaran las aguas del bautismo y entrar en la vida de Cristo. Ellos estaban en la obscuridad, y vienen a la luz. Cada uno es sumergido en las aguas del bautismo (3, 5 y 7 lecturas). Desde el bautismo, ellos reciben la confirmación, los 7 dones del Espíritu Santo, pero también son sellados en su fe y alianza con Dios (2, 4, y 6 lecturas). Y todo esto es posible porque somos su creación, hechos a su imagen y semejanza todos pertenecemos al él y somos fecundos y nos multiplicamos mientras nuestra Iglesia crece (1ra lectura). Los Elegidos ahora son llamados Neófitos de las palabras neo (nuevo) y phytus (plantados) que significa “recién plantados” en el momento en que esta nueva fe ha sido plantada en ellos. La congregación completa también renueva sus promesas bautismales al sostener una vela encendida y son rociados con el agua bendita de su bautismo. Esto les recuerda a todos los que están reunidos que estamos unidos con Cristo en nuestra fe y unidos unos con otros como Iglesia.

Por último, como todas las celebraciones, culmina en la celebración de la Eucaristía. Los Neófitos reciben la comunión por primera vez uniéndose ellos mismos con Cristo y la Iglesia y nosotros lo recibimos otra vez recordándonos la importancia del pan de vida y el cáliz de salvación que sigue alimentando y fortaleciendo nuestra vida como discípulos de Cristo. Dentro de la Eucaristía, el Misterio Pascual es incrustado al recibir a Cristo, entramos una vez más en el misterio de su vida, muerte y resurrección el cual se revela ante nuestros ojos durante esta celebración de tres días. Y la mejor parte es… que podemos entrar en ella otra vez cada vez que vamos a misa cada domingo o diario si queremos. Esto, mis hermanos, es la belleza de nuestra Iglesia. Espero que puedan acompañarnos para la celebración del Triduum. Bendiciones.
