Today’s Scripture readings offer us a standing invitation to the everlast-ing joy of the Heavenly banquet and a loving warning to stay ever ready for this Heavenly banquet by con-stantly wearing the wedding gar-ment i.e., remaining in a state of grace. All three readings describe
how a loving and providing God sees to it that there is abundant food for His people. In the first reading, Isaiah describes the Messianic banquet on the Lord’s mountain in the Holy City of Jerusalem, which Yahweh is preparing for His peo-ple. The “good news” is that it is a great feast of “rich food and choice wines.” But for the children of Israel the “bad news” is that Yahweh invites all peo-ple, including Gentiles, to the banquet. Today’s Re-sponsorial Psalm (Ps 23), presents God as the Good Shepherd who nourishes, leads, and protects His flock. In the second reading, St. Paul advises the Philippians to put their trust in the power and good-ness of a providing God, who in Jesus, has given His Church everything needed to enable His followers to participate in the Heavenly banquet. In today’s Gospel, by telling an allegoric parable of judgment in the Temple of Jerusalem two days before his ar-rest, Jesus accuses the Jewish religious and civil leaders of rejecting God’s invitation to the Heavenly banquet given through him, God’s Son. They have rejected the invitation by not listening to the Good News preached by Jesus and by not reforming their
lives. This invitation was repeatedly extended to Is-rael through the prophets, including John the Bap-tist. But the leadership contemporary with Jesus re-jected the reality that Jesus was the fulfillment of all prophecy, refused to accept God’s invitation to right-eous living given through John the Baptist and through Jesus, and is now planning to kill God’s own Son, Jesus. Hence, God is inviting the sinners and Gentiles for His banquet, and that is why Jesus is keeping the company of sinners. Life messages: 1) We need to keep wearing the wedding garment of holiness and right-eousness—the state of grace—all the time and appreciate and make use of the provision for God’s graces in the Church: a) We received the “wedding garment” of sanctifying grace in Baptism, and we receive additional graces to retain it through the other Sacraments. b) Our participation in the Eucha-ristic celebration and in personal and family prayers helps us to recharge our spiritual batteries and ena-bles us to lead Spirit-filled lives. c) Jesus nourishes us in the Church through the proclamation of the Word of God and through his own body and blood in the Holy Communion. 2) We need to participate in the Eucharistic banquet with proper preparation by repenting of our sins and by actively participating in the prayers and singing during the Holy Mass. Participating in Holy Mass is the best preparation and source of power for our future participation in the Heavenly banquet.

“Our Mother Heals” Ministry at OLS Catholics and non-Catholics welcome!
We are starting a healing Mass and anointing at Our Lady of Sorrows for all those who are sick in any way, espe-cially cancer patients. The Mass of heal-ing and anointing will take place the first Saturday of the month at 10:00 am. After Mass, we will have adoration, healing prayer, and anointing. For non-Catholics, we will pray with them and pray over them. All are welcome to come and experience the healing power of Jesus in their personal lives!

Discussion Groups Forming Now! Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom
Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom, by Jeff Cavins, shows how Christ's Kingdom on earth is empowered to carry out his work in the world. The book of Acts shows the Church, enlivened by the Holy Spirit, teaching, preaching,
healing, and restoring outcasts in the same way that Jesus did on earth. This study program will be offered at OLS in three (3) seven-week sessions. Session one will begin on November 6, 2017. The Cost is $31.00 for the study book that will be used for all three (3) sessions. To register, contact Deacon Dan Skillman at

St. Vincent DePaul News Greetings Fellow Parishioners, The St. Vincent DePaul Society conference at OLS is not publicly recognizing your generous donations during the first Sunday of the month Masses. Rather, we are accepting your canned goods and other items of charity at every Mass. You will find SVDP baskets inside the doors of church to accept your donations. Items will be collected regularly and taken to our food pantry. Items of greatest need are canned meats, toiletries and cereals,
however all goods are appre-ciated and won't go to waste. St. Vincent DePaul appreci-ates all your past and hope-fully future generosity.

Trunk or Treat! Attention All Parishioners: Trunk or Treat will be celebrat-ed on the SCCA parking lot on October 27th. Cars must arrive by 6:45 p.m. and the event will start at 7:00 p.m. Candy will be handed out until 8:00 p.m. No walk ins will be allowed this year. Please contact Hilda (314-295-7053 or [email protected]) for more information about registering a vehicle and include the number of children that you would like to have attend with you. You may also order pizza for dinner (the order must be placed with a registered car). Car registration and pizza order must be placed by October 16th.
Parish Christmas Celebration On December 15th, join your parish family to cele-brate Christmas! We’ll light the outdoor decorations for the first time at 6:45. At 7:00, musical group Joyful Noise will lead us in a prayerful, one-of-a-kind Christ-mas carol service. After the performance, join us in Faenger Hall for a reception. We look forward to cele-brating this beautiful season with you!

Our Lady of Sorrows Over 50 Club would like to invite men and women age 50 and over to attend our monthly gathering. We meet on the 4th Tuesday of the month (some exceptions apply). Doors open at 10:30am. Bring your own lunch, and we will provide dessert and bever-ages. A brief meeting at 11:15am will take place and bingo will follow. On occasion, we join other Over 50 groups for outings or trips. We are a friendly group of three generations who enjoy welcoming folks and mak-ing new friends.
The annual dues of $5 are paid in January and there is a monthly fee of $2 for all attending. Individuals over 90 do not have to pay the annual dues.

You Did It for Me At 60 years old, Moussa Mai left his life behind to escape Boko Haram. He traveled for four days and arrived in the village of Kaya, Chad, with nothing but the clothes on his back. His story is a common one for people fleeing violence. This is why CRS is working with local Church partners in Chad to help 1,000 refugee and host families receive vouchers for two months’ worth of food and livestock.

Dynamic Catholic, Alive: Repentance The readings today talk much about the Lord’s goodness and how He provides for His people in abundance. However, we should turn out attention to the idea of repentance. Why? Because repentance is the qualification for truly relishing
what the Lord provides for us. In the Gospel, there is a man who comes to the wedding banquet but is cast out because he is not wearing a wedding garment. In the parable, the wedding garment is a sym-bol for repentance, a change of heart and mind, which is the condition for entrance into the kingdom. Through repentance, Christ transforms our faith and allows us to continue this transformation process in a life of good deeds (Mt 7:21–23). If we want to feast on the riches of God, it is essential for us to repent and turn away from our sins. How do you need to repent in order to be prepared for the wed-ding banquet? archstl.org/dynamic
