Its five years ago since my poetry has beenpublished in internet. That was appreciated asthe first of it’s kind in history of Kannadaliterature. Now, it’s the turn of Bollywood starSuniel Shetty’s biography titled ‘Our OwnSunil’ to hit the stands that too in English givesme immense happiness. My aspirations torespond to the new thoughts in IT era getrealized in one way or other.

When I pondered over to pen a biography ofaccomplished native of Tulunadu, at once thepersona of Suniel Shetty flashed into mymind. He is a native of Tulunadu and his downto earth personality overwhelmed myimagination, since he has become anaccomplished Bollywood celebrity. I stronglydetermined to pursue the personal traits ofthis great actor Suniel Shetty by interactingwith his friends and relatives.

Its Suniel Shetty’s birthday on August 11 andon this glorious occasion I was opportune torelease my English version of book titled – OurOwn Sunil .

I had gotten an opportunity to meet Sunielwhen I was working as a journalist withMumbai-based Karnataka Malla, Kannada

daily during 1992 – 93. A few moments spentwith him still remain afresh in my memory. It’s interesting to note that the first meetingw i t h h im w as set on h is lan d l in e.

Suniel Shetty amicably invited me to meet atthe location of movie shooting in a mill, located at Fort in Mumbai. I got a chance tochat with his father Veerappa Shetty and hismother in Tulu.

It’s my perspective in life, in order to explorenew creativity and innovations in whatever Ido. Meanwhile, I decided to try toexperiment on the popularity of Bollywoodactor Suniel Shetty who is a native of Mulky inMangalore and loved by his fans across thecountry. It was my experiment whetherSuniel Shetty replies to the letters of hischerished fans. I posted an advertisementasking the readers to send their questionsthat they want to be replied by Suniel Shetty. I was surprised to receive more than onehundred letters from readers. With thisbunch of letters, I approached Suniel Shettyat the movie shooting location. We chatduring the intervals of shooting.

When the shooting ended on that evening,Suniel Shetty invited me to accompany him inhis car to his residence located in a posh area- Alta mount Road, Mumbai. I was privilegedto chat with Suniel’s parents. I will cherish

the memory of Suniel enthusiasticallysharing his family album with me. Since then, I am in touch with Sunilvery often. I remember I had a chatduring the programme of BuntsSangh in Mumbai.

I was beginning my career injournalism as reporter with Mumbai-based Karnataka Malla – Kannadadaily, when I borrowed a Yashicablack and white camera from mediafriend Sridar Ucchil, to take pictures

of Sunil during my visit to his movie shootinglocation.

Although the picture of Suniel Shetty which Iclicked in the background of K T Venugopal ofUdayavani, coastal Karnataka’s Kannadadaily, has faded over the years, but mymemory remains afresh.

I was contacting Suniel Shetty over hisresidence landline as and when I wanted, since I knew very well that his time was muchprecious than mine. The memories of OldMumbai flood my mind in spite of thewidespread changes all over the Mumbai.

Suniel was present during the inaugural ofMumbai’s super cop Daya Nayak’s School inthe latter’s native village Ennehole in Karkala,a few years ago. Meanwhile, I got a chanceto chat with Suniel at this occasion, when hehas already made his mark in bollywood. Irecalled my first meeting with him as apromising actor a few decades ago. I wasstunned to know that Sunil has been humbleto his roots and name and fame in tinsel worldhas not changed him at all.

Suniel arrived in Ujire during Vishwa TuluSammelan on the invitation of DharmadhikariDr D Veerendra Heggade during 2009. Hehimself looklike a brand ambassador ofTulunadu earning the love and regards of

natives. He identified me in the midst ofmedia persons at the venue, when Ipresented him with a CD of TulunaduPaddana titled ‘Paddhana Poomale’ that hewillingly accepted with an affectionatesmile.

Sunil was specially invited to attend thehistorical Kambala in Moodbidri and I got onemore chance to talk to him. MLAAbhayachandra Jain presented a Kambalastick that is generally used by an handler ofbuffaloes race, in due honour to Bollywoodstar Suniel Shetty. The cameraman of AkritiStudio clicked his pictures with me also atthe occasion.

This is for the time being, while I know itvery well that I will have no time to rest tillmy forthcoming book that will be includedwith some more information.

# “My image is that of a family man, both on and off screen.”

# “My son does enjoy my action films. But the women in my family would behappier if I did socially relevant films. My mother, like any mother, says,‘What a lovely film!’ and ‘You haveimproved!’ Which I know isn’t true.”

# “ I’m more about style than steps. I’mvery graceful as a fighter because myhoned instincts come into play here. Butwhen it comes to dancing, I’m nogood.”

# “Before each shot, I would rehearse it30, 40 times. See, my producer hasselected me for his film, so he also hasto take the time and trouble to groomme where I am weak. For actionscenes, I don’t need rehearsals orretakes. But for dance, I do rehearse —and the results are showing, which issomething I am happy about

“ I’m as human as the next guy. I lose mytemper, abuse and fret when things don’t go myway. I go through all the emotions a normalhuman being would go through. But I’ve learntfrom my mistakes. What you know at 30, youdid not know at 20.

In terms of script, I wouldn’t say that I havebecome choosy. If I was, I wouldn’t havemessed up the way I have.

But I have become choosy in terms of directors.I know that an ordinary script in the hands of acapable director can emerge as a good product, but a good script in the hands of a bad directorwould look like any other film.

I want a great director and an even betterproducer, so that they can make and market afilm well. Take Lagaan for example. It wasmarketed so well. Besides, the fact that it was awell-made film ensures that it becomes part ofhistory.

Though I am smart, I am also a man ofcommitment. I signed on 45 films the day Icame into the industry. I could have taken onbetter films and walked out of the bad ones, butI would be harming the producers whodepending on me. Today, I’m at a stage where Ican say no, I can say “Mr X you are a very niceman, but I simply can’t do business with youany more.”

When it came to taking the TV hostplunge, could it have been anything buta keep-fit show for apna fighting-fitAnna? Biggest Loser Jeetega, the desiversion of the popular American showThe Biggest Loser, had macho manSuniel Shetty keeping a check onpounds, lost and gained, by a team of16 obese hopefuls. During the course of the show’s four-month run, most contestants wentfrom 120 kg to less than half thatweight. On-the-set love blossomed formany. Shetty lisped half-sentences andchewed gum throughout, but managedlittle else.

USP: Nothing. The participants —most of them were facing the camerafor the first time — arrested moreattention than the 100-filmveteranShetty managed.Script: Never known for beingmuch of an actor, Shetty’sanchoring skills could at bestbe described as average. Givento mouth scripted lines like

“Aapne iss hafte sirf do kgghataaye hain,” the poker-faced action hero did just that— mouth them. Stop. Zeroexpression. Zero passion. Zeroimprovisation.Camera comfort: Shetty looked ill atease. On the days he chose to shake aleg he was disastrous.Look: The slim and trim Shetty wasnevertheless a dude. Amid rumoursthat he possessed a 23-inch waistline(yes, you heard that right!), theMischief man’s khaki shirts, linentrousers and super-cool glares madequite a fashion statement.Contestant connect: Despite themany hiccups, one thing that cameeasily to Shetty was the bond that heforged with most contestants. He wasthe elder brother they went to foradvice. “I remember a particularinstance when two contestants fell inlove during the course of the show.Suniel Shetty supported themthroughout,” says masscommunication student Ritama Ghosh.Shetty has reportedly offered filmroles to some BLJ contestants.Eyeball count: Suniel Shetty didn’tquite interest the audience. By adopting the villages. Ibelieve if the people from bigcities take the initiative andstart helping the poor guys inthe unnourished villages andcommunities. Only this way wecan sort some problems. Ibelieve that instead of sendingthe relief and aids outside thecountry, we should help thepeople in need within thecountry. I have even told theHome Minister RR Patil that ifrequired, I’ll be the first personto go there and act as amediator between the twosides as both are our peopleonly.

He went silent for a year but it’stoo early to rule out Sunil Shetty. The macho actor who also provedhis mettle with comedy will beseen in the upcoming releaseDADDY COOL followed by a fewbig ones. The actor speaks to ourcorrespondent on his films.

Have you consciously cutdown on films?

Not really. Yes, I have been doingfewer films but it is because I amtoo preoccupied with other thingsat the same time. I also have totake care of my production houseand we are doing some reallyinteresting projects. In all I amstill busy and as of films, theseason has just begun and I havequite a few releases this year.

At the same time, you aren’tseen doing too many actionfilms or even serious roles?

It’s all about the kind of filmsbeing made. I have alwaysbelieved that an actor shouldkeep changing with thetimes...evolve with every film andgive the best in every role. Mylast film that released almost ayear ago was MUKHBIIR and itwas quite a serious role. (Smiles)In fact as you said there are acouple of films where I will beseen doing serious, in fact veryserious roles.

But it has been more comedy oflate?

Everyone’s doing comedy but thatdoesn’t mean I will do as many comediesas possible. Comedies are doing well. Itoo love doing comedies. When I cameto the industry no one thought that I

would do comedy or even would fit intothat mould but that’s something I havereally enjoyed doing over the years. It

also depends on the director. If it’ssomeone like Priyadarshan you know thekind of film he is going to come up with.

DADDY COOL is again a comedy?

(Laughs) and you will keep laughing onceyou watch that film. It’s not slapstick buta really humorous one. It’s a very light-hearted film about how a dead body getsexchanged by mistake and the dead manhas two sons. I play one of them. It’s acomedy of errors and eventuallythroughout the film you will find how onesituation leads to another.

Okay that sounds interesting. Butthe big news is that you are alsodoing Priyadarshan’s DE DANA DAN,which is also a comedy.

(Smiles) I think the entire country islooking forward to that film. As I said itsPriyan Sir’s film and if it’s a comedy youknow the kind of film it’s going to be. It’sone of the good films I have done in along time. I am among one of the threeleads.

More importantly, the trio ofAkshay Kumar, Paresh Rawaland Sunil Shetty makes acomeback.

Certainly, that is really whateveryone is looking forward to. Thelast time we three worked togetherwas in HERA PHERI and it becamenot only a hit but almost a cultclassic. It’s after nine years (pauses)and to be very honest we all areexcited. I hope the old magic isrecreated. That the three of us areback again in one film certainlyholds a lot of expectation and it willcertainly remind one of the HERAPHERI days.

But there were reports thatAkshay and you won’t workbecause of difference ofopinions?

I don’t know where these reportscome from. Whenever we two haveworked the films have gone on tobecome hits... super hits indeed. Beit MOHRA, HERA PHERI, DHADKAN,PHIR HERA PHERI...everything.

Is the sequel to HERA PHERI stillon? There have been a lot oftalks going on.

Of course it’s on and I am sure it’sgoing to rock. Much like DE DANADAN this one too will be one greatfilm.

Okay, what about your muchtalked about film RED ALERT?

It will release anytime. (Smiles) and asI said it’s a serious film. It’s a veryintense subject and one film that I amproud of.

But it’s quite some time that thefilm is stuck?

See, the time wasn’t right because ofrecession, then the multiplex strikecame in, so everything got delayed.RED ALERT needs to be taken veryseriously. It has already done quitewell at the festivals. It’s a film on theNaxalite movement and is inspiredfrom a true story. The storyline is verygripping and you will see some reallyintense moments.

Okay and what about yourproduction house?

Oh!! It’s really doing good. We havetwo very good movies coming up.LOOT is there and then there’sMUMBAI CHAKA CHAK. Both arecompletely different in taste and style. So I am looking forward to it.

And where do we see you nextafter Daddy Cool?

My parents’ contribution to themaking of Sunil Shetty, the man hasbeen 100 per cent. I come from amiddle class background. Myparents are very simple.

My wife, Mana has been mybackbone for as far as I canremember.

I give all the credit to my family.

Family & Success

I need to spend time with them and Irealise that. If I didn’t, I’d be an uncleto them and not papa. I spend moretime with my children than any otherfather would. After 7 pm, whenever I’min town, I’m return home. And I workhalf days on Saturdays.

If I’m abroad, I plan my outdoorsaccording to their holidays. I take atleast six to eight weeks off in a yearto spend time with them. I don’t thinkyou’d find a more devoted father.

Devoted Father

The Business manAs a businessman, Sunil Shetty isdumb. His image as a ‘businessman’ iswhat his partners should have. Theydeserve all the credit.

But I will say that I’m very diplomatic. Idon’t take pangas with anybody.

As an actor, I don’t want to talk toomuch about my future filmsbecause this industry is such thateven after half a film has beencomplete, it can be shelved. I onlywant to say that I’ll be working withthe best directors.

There’s no way I see myself as adirector. Direction is far too creative.

It’s very easy to put a film together— to get a script and actors — butdirection is another matteraltogether. That’s why our successratio is as low as 3 to 5 per cent.Because only 5 per cent of the filmsare made by genuine directors.

I hope that production will be one ofthe achievements for PopcornEntertainment, but right now we’reconcentrating on stage shows, events and celeb endorsements.

The entertainment centre at Powaiis also something I’m still puttingtogether. Before, I was runningindividual centres — Thai Me Upand Astro. But I realised that theenergy required for running onecentre is as much as the energyrequired for running ten centres ifthey are brought together. I’m alsoplanning on opening a huge centerin Hyderabad.

That Sunil Shetty is mad about fitness is no secret. He is supremely particular about his daily fitnessregimen and also about what he eats and drinks. Hewill soon convert his passion into a business. Well, actually, the process has already started. AnytimeFitness is the name under which the Red Alert actorhas started fitness centres in cities like Pune andHyderabad, and the actor-entrepreneur is keen toset up these centres all over the country so that moreand more people can become fitness-conscious. Hehas appointed a culinary expert as a core member ofAnytime Fitness. It would be this expert’s job torecommend the exact menu for each individualdepending on the requirements of his/her body.

“His philosophy is that each one eats whatever he/she likes but in the right quantity and without theharmful ingredients in it,” explains Sunil, adding, “If Ihave eaten idli-dosa all my life, you can’t ask me tosuddenly switch my diet. But what you can do iswatch over what goes into my idli and dosa.” Sunilfeels, housewives, girls and boys will get an expert’sopinion on how they can improve their health andthat of their near and dear ones. If all goes well, theactor may strike a deal with the Taj group of hotelsfor running its kitchens all over the country.Source :
