Miss Emery Frances Martin was born on June 9, 2012 at 1:28 in the afternoon to two adoring, lovingparents and welcomed with a multitude of love and wishes from family and friends. To Jennifer andJimmy Martin, she was truly a gift from God. Their sweet baby girl had no idea how many prayershad been bestowed on her and her parents. She arrived healthy and happy and in Jennifer’s words,“We stand in amazement by it all. There have been lots of miracles, along each step of the way. Andshe is a miracle, the newest member of our family, our pride, joy and delight!”

To say that the Martin’s journey the past couple of years has been filled with joy and heartache andeverything in between would be an understatement. Jennifer and Jimmy were married at the FirstBaptist Church in Marietta in July of 2010. This was especially poignant to them as both of theirparents had been married in the same church, and they felt blessed to celebrate their union withfamily and friends.

In November of 2010, the Martin’s were excited to learn that they were pregnant with their firstchild. They were thrilled that they had found out early enough so Jennifer could take all of theproper precautions. At six weeks an ultrasound was performed in early December and all reportswere positive that their baby was healthy presenting a strong heartbeat. In January, as they approachedthe 3 month mark, another ultrasound was performed with unsettling results. They were told thattheir baby had a major defect that was “not compatible with life.” Visits to specialists at NorthsideHospital determined that their baby girl had a severe problem with her lymphatic system known asCystic Hygroma. Cystic Hygroma is a condition where the baby carries extra fluid that is caused by thebody’s inability to drain properly. It is associated with many birth defects such as Down syndrome,Turner syndrome, and heart defects.

Jennifer and Jimmy opted to have an invasive test called CVS to determine what strain of Cystic Hygomathey were dealing with and also to determine if it was chromosomal or genetic. Terminating the preg-nancy was something they refused to consider, so with their faith and God’s love Jennifer endured thetest and through tears, sadness, and hope they waited for the results. The result from the CVS came innormal, but doctor’s needed to wait until the 20th week to test for other major defects not tested withthe CVS. Unfortunately the diagnosis was Tetralogy of Fallot (a smaller pulmonary valve and right ventriclehypertrophy). Surgery would be required after her birth. Throughout the pregnancy the Martin’s feltblessed by all of the professional and expert physicians that they saw in the Atlanta area. The supportfrom the March of Dimes, The American Heart Association, and the staffs at WellStar, Northside Hospital, and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta rallied behind them with expertise and care.

Jennifer woke up early on May 14th and didn’t feel the baby move for 3 hours. They met their OB doctorat Wellstar’s Women’s Center at Kennestone and were completely devastated to learn that an ultrasoundrevealed that their little girl’s heart had stopped. Jennifer went thru the delivery and she and Jimmy saidhello and goodbye to beautiful Rebecca Reese Martin weighing in at 1 pound, 12 ounces.

Heartache and sorrow filled their lives, but they were buoyed by their faith in God and the tremendousoutpouring of love and support from family and friends. They both knew this precious loss was somethingthey would never get over and never forget.

February is American Heart Month

The Martin’s expressed their appreciation and gratitude to the American HeartAssociation by rallying TEAM REESE together and raised $11,000.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US, killing more than 600,000Americans each year. This is why we devote the entire month of February to rais-ing awareness of heart health. February 1st, marks the 10th year of the AmericanHeart Association’s Go Red For Women movement, 10 years of fighting to savewomen’s lives from heart disease. For more information on Go Red For Womenand what you can do to make a difference visit www.heart.org

On Oct 22 more than 225 walkers (family and friends of the Martin’s) gathered for the AmericanHeart Association’s Cobb Heart Walk in honor of Rebecca Reese Martin gathering under the nameof TEAM REESE. TEAM REESE raised $11,000 for the American Heart Association and whilethey walked they remembered her in their hearts and raised funds and awareness for a very specialorganization near and dear to them. Jimmy had walked in the AHA’s Cobb Heart Walk for yearshonoring his grandfather who suffered from heart disease. Jennifer revealed later that she had noidea that she was 2 months pregnant at that time.

Happily, Emery Frances Martin arrived the following June to Jennifer and Jimmy Martin. Big sister,Reese was most likely smiling from heaven for the joy and love her family was surrounded by!

Do You Discipline or Punish?by Mary B. Hammock, MSN, CPNP

Punishment controls behavior by using pain or unpleasantness to end a wrong behavior. Thousandsof studies show that punishment teaches fear, aggression, and avoidance. Punishment is typicallycarried out in anger, frustration or in an attempt to establish dominance and immediate obedience. If your goal is to change a negative behavior, punishment should be the last tactic you choose.

A high value is placed on obedience. Discipline helps teach children a value system and thebenefit of doing what is right. It builds self-esteem, teaches responsibility and helps to developself-control.

One of the most important aspects of discipline is to do so respectfully. Do not scream at yourchild. Approach your child, make eye contact and talk to your child softly. Never call your childnames or use cruel words – “You are such a disappointment.” Shaming, belittling or threateningyour child will damage his trust and self-esteem.

While it is very important to be swift and consistent in disciplining, try not to correct your child infront of others, including grandparents. This will em-

barrass your child and likely cause resent-ment, just as you wouldn’t want your boss tocorrect you in front of your peers.

As always, set a positive example. If it is notappropriate for your child to scream at hisbrother or call him names, don’t lead by badexample. If you find it appalling that yourfour year old slapped her friend becauseshe took her red crayon, be sure she is notbeing slapped or spanked as a disciplinemethod in your home.

Another tool to obedience is to teach andto practice. Children are not mind read-ers and were not born knowing how toclean their room, pick up their toys orclean off the table – especially to ourparticular liking. Tell your child why itis not acceptable, demonstrate the cor-rect way to do the job and practice untilthey get it right. And of course, thepower of praise will reinforce the greatjob that was done. Sometimes it isnecessary to practice on your scheduleand not theirs. Waking them at sevenon a Saturday morning to practicecleaning their room can have moreof an impact than 4 o’clock on aThursday.

Children are more likely to choosepositive behaviors and choiceswhen they see themselves as capa-ble individuals and responsible communitymembers. Parents using positive language can help children build that self-perception. Name concrete, specific behaviors your child is displaying. “I was really proud whenyou gently took your sister’s hand and walked with her through the parking lot” is more effectivethan “Good work.” It is equally important to use a warm tone and avoid being over sentimental.“Thank you for inviting your brother to play the game with you” is more appropriate than “You aremommy’s good girl.” As a bonus, your language helps those within earshot form a positive percep-tion of your child, which further enhances your child's self-perception and promotes positive be-havior.

Being a good parent is a full-time job. Rewards can come slowly in the trenches of daily life. It iseasy to get overwhelmed and exhaustion can lead to poor choices resulting in punishment, insteadof discipline. No change comes quickly but even small changes in your disciplining methods willresult in big changes in your child’s obedience and self-worth. Healthy Steps Pediatrics is helpingto grow healthy children one step at a time. Call 678-384-3480 for your appointment today.

ONLY $20 TO ANYONE WHO NEEDSHELP BUT HAS NEVER BEEN TO A

CHIROPRACTOR BEFORE(Or Hasn’t Been In A Long Time)

Dear Friend,

If you’ve ever thought about going to a chiro-practor but you’ve hesitated because you weren’tsure it was right for you please read on…

My name is Dr. Amy Valente. I would like toshow my heartfelt thanks to the community bycelebrating the month of February with the announcement of Community Health Week. It’s my way of saying THANK YOU to thepeople who have been so helpful and mean somuch. I hope this will benefit you and yours.

I have agreed to “give away” (to anyone whoasks for it) $200 worth of my services for only $20.

That’s right - $20.

In the years that I have been practicing I havehelped many people in the North Georgia areafeel better and live healthier, more productivelives through chiropractic care. I would nowlike to introduce you to the many benefits myprofession has to offer.

For instance, chiropractic care may be able tohelp you if you are suffering from any of thefollowing conditions.

• Low back pain

• Neck Pain

• Migraines

• Sciatica

• Herniated discs

• Degenerated discs

• Shoulder/arm pain

And a whole host of other problems, rangingfrom TMJ to carpal tunnel.

These symptoms can be caused whenever thevertebrae in your spine are out of alignment, because this “misalignment” directly affectsyour nervous system.

Fortunately, if you are suffering from suchproblems or similar conditions right now, theymay be relieved or eliminated by proper chiro-practic treatment (commonly called “adjust-ments”).

ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS AND BACK PAIN

Although Chiropractic care has been an enormous help to me and my family for 30years when I met the doctor’s at NCS&N Iwas not currently under care. As I started getting adjusted again the relief was almost immediate! I was suffering from soreness, stiffness and sleepless nights. “Feeling better”affects everything in life and helps us copewith the daily stresses. I suppose I am mostamazed by knowing that one’s spine has to dowith every part of the body. God made us thatway-“fearfully & wonderfully made” (Ps.139)

Your Friend - Pastor Ron Mobley

TMJ & HEADACHESI was in a lot of pain when I started coming formy adjustments at NCS&N. I suffered with painin my jaw and severe headaches. Now that Ihave been receiving chiropractic care my painhas decreased tremendously and I don’t have toworry about constant headaches. I can walk mydog without pain and my posture has gotten better. My husband is also very pleased with myprogress. I am thrilled at how quickly I have improved due to chiropractic care and I love thepositive caring atmosphere they have in the office.

Thank you - Denine Wolden

KNEE PAIN/SLEEPLESSNESSThe reason why I came into the office was because I was having knee pain and I was notsleeping very well at night. I am now getting 3-4more hours of sleep at night and my knees havegotten a lot better. I interact more with my family and I can ride my bike with my grand-daughter. I feel 100% better. The doctors andstaff here at NCS&N really do what they sayand are very professional and friendly. Chiropractic care really works great!

Thanks - Thomas Weems

SCOLIOSISWhen I first came into the office I did not knowthe extent of my health issues. After the exam, the doctor told me I had a scoliosis that affectedmy health in many different ways. Chiropractichas helped me to restore my physical balanceand as a dancer that is very important! I alsohad numbness in my hands and now I can takenotes without my hand going numb. Since Ihave been getting adjusted I have more energyand my heartburn and circulation has im-proved! I am happy to say that chiropractic is easier than I expected and not as time consuming as I once thought.

Thanks! - Christine Pearce

LOSING WEIGHT CAN REDUCE YOUR HEALTH RISKSValentine’s Day, February 14th, it is synonymous with chocolates, flowers, and hearts. Didyou know February is heart health month? It is a month dedicated to raising awareness ofheart disease and prevention. Being overweight or obese significantly raises your chances ofdeveloping heart disease as well as diabetes, which can double your risk for heart attack. Overtwo thirds of all Americans are overweight or obese. Losing weight can reduce your risks

considerably.

Being overweight or obese affects your body in many ways. Obesity may lead to highblood pressure because increased fluid levels in the body make it

more difficult to pump the blood through the vessels. Thiscauses the pressure in those vessels to rise and reduces cir-

culation; this in turn weakens your veins and ar-teries putting you at risk for a heart attack

or stroke. As your heart worksharder to meet the demandsof the body, it can becomeenlarged. If left untreatedthe chambers of the heartalso enlarge in order to

process more blood, pushing the heart to itslimits.

People who are over-weight or obese are

more likely to develop diabetes than people who are within their normal body weight. Dia-betes sufferers are 4 to 5 times more likely to develop heart disease than those who do nothave diabetes. Heart disease is considered the most dangerous complication from diabetescompared to all known complications. Diabetes affects circulation and those who do notmanage their diabetes effectively typically have high levels of lipids in their blood. Thesehigh levels of lipids can clog and harden arteries and lead to atherosclerosis. The biggestproblem with diabetes is high levels of blood sugars tend to make the lining of the bloodvessels rough making it easier for the plaque from the lipids to stick to the walls. If the personwho is both overweight and a diabetic also develops high blood pressure, the pressure willput increased strain on the blood vessels and put the person at a higher risk for a heart attackor stroke.

Losing weight can reduce these risks. Exercise and becoming knowledgeable in how to budgetyour caloric intake each day is an excellent start on your journey to a healthy heart. 30 minutesof exercise a day can help to reduce body fat, lower blood pressure, boost energy levels, im-prove circulation and muscle tone. Increasing muscle tone raises your metabolism allowingyou to lose weight more efficiently. Consult your physician before beginning any exerciseregimen. Learning how many calories your body burns each day allows you to budget yourfood consumption for a healthy lifestyle leading you to lose weight and make you more hearthealthy. Synergy Medical Centers in Acworth, GA offers a physician supervised weight lossprogram that teaches the importance of lifestyle change to help you lose the weight in ahealthy way and but to keep it off for life.

If you have further questions please call Synergy Medical Centers at 770-975-1299 or visitthe website at www.synergymedicalweightloss.com.

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU… RESOLVE TO BE GOOD TO YOUR BRAIN THIS YEARAn estimated 40 to 45% of Americans make New Year’s resolutions. Most of us resolve to become physicallyfit, fiscally fit, re-organized, re-energized and overall healthier, but in that quest we often forget one of the mostimportant aspects of complete health – mental fitness and strength.

If you don’t think you need a brain boost because you’re feeling young and fit and mentally strong, think again.A University of Virginia study shows that the average person's brain peaks at age 22! Even so, the brain has theability to grow and change at any age, and there are proven ways to get your brain in tip-top shape, and in somecases, make it better than ever. The key is quality – quality nutrition, sleep, social life, and exercise, both physicaland mental.

When it comes to brain-boosting foods, it seems research uncovers a new super food every other day. Overtime it’s become clear that many different types of foods are necessary for optimum mental functioning, in-cluding fluids, complex carbohydrates, proteins, beneficial fats, and various vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Some of the more important trace elements include Vitamin B-1 which enables the metabolism of glucose.Potassium, sodium and calcium are used for nerve cell signaling and metabolic reactions, and zinc is important

for concentration and memory. Iron is essential for supplying oxygento the brain. In one study women with sufficient iron in their

blood performed cognitive exercises better and fasterthan women who were iron deficient. After iron sup-

plementation, the formerly anemic women didfive to seven times better on their cognitive per-

formance.

Unsaturated fats also protect the brain andbuttress brain function, especially thepolyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids foundin fish. Protein heightens attention and pro-

duces structural materials and transporters forthe brain. Water, of course, is vital for brain func-

tion. Studies show that even slight dehydrationslows the rate nutrients can enter the brain, producing

short-term memory deficits, reasoning difficulties and other

cognitive problems.

Keeping our brains optimally powered is also dependent on when we eat. The brain can’t store carbohydrateslike muscles can so it requires a constant supply of glucose. Eating regularly ensures blood glucose levels don’tdip or surge causing concentration issues and other mental lapses. Eating breakfast is critically important. Resultsfrom 22 studies of school-age kids show that breakfast eaters have better memories, test scores and school at-tendance rates.

Healthy friendships also prove healthy for your brain. Research from Chicago’s Rush University Medical Centershows having close friends and staying in contact with family provides protection against Alzheimer's disease.Other studies show people with extensive social networks are at reduced risk of cognitive impairment.

Sleep supports your cognitive abilities and brain function by buttressing your brains ability to quickly processnew information and concepts and to organize, store and recall memories.

Physical exercise is extremely beneficial to mental function. The immediate effects are obvious – it gets theoxygen flowing to the brain. The long-term effects are impressive. Several studies show that people who exerciseare less likely to suffer memory problems, and some animal studies even suggest that physical exercise canprompt the growth of new stem cells.

Perhaps the most important aspect of resolving to have the best brain ever this year, is vowing to exercise itoften. Puzzles, riddles, games and other mental exercises that keep the mind active and challenged can preventcognitive decline, and the right type of intense brain training exercises can actually make you smarter.

LearningRx specializes in this type of intense brain training. Personal trainers use fast-paced, game-like exercisesto quickly improve cognitive skills like attention, memory, logic and reasoning, auditory and visual processingand processing speed. A recent study showed adults who went through LearningRx brain training improvedbrain function and gained an average of 11.4 IQ points. While at-home mental exercise programs are generallynot intense enough to produce that type of gain, if you push your brain with tough mental challenges, it canmake a difference.

So as you ponder your New Year’s Resolutions, remember your brain, and resolve to treat it well. The brain’samazing ability to grow and change throughout life means instead of growing old, the brain can simply grow– if we continue to challenge it through training and exercise, and nurture it with quality nutrition, sleep, exerciseand friendships.

February is a tough month for most men. The primary reasons are that hunting season has closed,it’s too cold to golf, football season is over, and nobody in their right mind wants to be out on alake enduring the bitter cold just to fish. So truly, as a male human you are about as bored as youcan be for 28-days straight, and then someone throws in Valentine’s Day in as a holiday just to addinsult to injury.

But why is this holiday so difficult for those of us with the XY package of chromosomes? Why isit that the Florists, Card Shops, Candy Stores and Jewelers all see that last-minute rush of male-dominated customers throwing money at them attempting to fulfill a predetermined requirementthat they somehow become mushy girly-men at the 11th hour for a universally accepted celebrationof romance? I’ll tell you why, it’s because we are practical. That’s it, practicality trumps romanceevery time.

Let me give you an example, the first night of my marriage my new wife and I checked into one ofthe fanciest hotels that I could not afford and were welcomed with a bed covered in rose petals andcinnamon-scented candles surrounding a garden tub filled with bubbles. I know this because at thetime of my marriage I was pushing 200lbs plus and when I went to join in the fun of the gardentub many of the bubbles and supporting water exited over the sides, thus swamping the candlesand sending a sickly smell of wet cinnamon and burnt bath salts wafting through our hotel room. And if that was not bad enough, the rose petals on the bed were so pungent and in such numbersthat by the time I woke up the next morning I had what appeared to be red welts on much of myback and left side of my face where I had slept onrose petals that the bath salts had dissolvedjust enough pigment from them toleave residual tattoos.

All of this could have beenavoided if one sane manhad mentioned to thehotel staff that A)water and fire don’tplay well togetherand B) that sleepingon a “bed ofroses” is just an ex-pression, not a di-rective!

A practical manwould have had aroom with the TV al-ready tuned to ESPN, aplate of chicken wings setwithin reaching distance ofthe bed and maybe, just maybe,a little Barry White playing in thebackground just for the sake of ambi-ence. That’s it. Why attempt to both drown andburn a couple simultaneously and then poison them with rash-inducing foliage?

But that’s romance. It’s taking the man who says “there is a straight line between point’s A and Z”and trying to turn him into the guy who says “there is a straight line between point’s A and….ohhhh, look over there ‘a shoe store honey!’”

The sad reality though is that, as I often tell my kids, sometimesyou have to do things you are not fond of, but you do them be-cause your mother tells you to. This just happens to be one ofthose times where I must remove all practicality from my mindand make the most important person to me in the whole wideworld remember why she put up with a rose-stained guy whosmelled like a burnt cinnamon tart for one more year!

MARVELOUS MASTER BEDROOMSBy Kimberly Herring

Much more than just the place you sleep, today’s master bedroom should function as a truly personalin-home retreat. The private nature of this room invites the indulgence of sumptuous fabrics of vary-ing textures or an exquisite oriental rug, which might be in jeopardy in other areas of the home.

Filling its role as the room’s focal point, the bed may be dramatically sleek or elaborately adorned andshould make a strong statement in the room’s interior while imparting an ambience of luxury andleisure to the homeowners. Nothing says custom grandeur more than exquisite bed coverings withlavish accent pillows. And contrary to what every “bed-in-a-bag retailer” would have us believe, bedswith varying frames, box springs, and mattresses are not standard sizes. Custom design includes customfitting, and here’s a gender-friendly tip: men are usually more comfortable in strong jewel tones ratherthan pastels, and with paisleys, solids and stripes rather than florals.

Canopy beds with side curtainswere originally designed to de-flect chilly drafts in the days be-fore homes were well insulated.Luckily, we’re now left with thelegacy of this exquisite and in-timate bed treatment. The lackof a real canopy bed is not adeterrent since the bed cur-tains can be hung from theceiling, from a carved corona,or from ceiling mounteddrapery rods. Even a smallbedroom can enjoy this ro-mantic treatment by drapingonly the head of the bed.

Possibly more than in any other area of the home, win-dow treatments here need to be both beautiful and functional. Providing there is a nice view, the

window treatments should be designed to completely clear the windows when opened. Styles, fabrics, trim, hardware, and fabrication techniques can vary tremendously to satisfy both function and beauty.

A small love seat or chaise positioned at the foot of the bed can serve a dual role as a comfy nest forreading and as a rest for folding back the bed cover at night. If space is at a premium, try two easychairs facing each other with an ottoman between.

Today’s flat screen televisions are much easier to camouflage as not to interfere with the bedroom’sdesign as past models. A beautiful wall cabinet can serve to encase the master bedroom television orif you still have one of the older convex model televisions an armoire can serve the same purpose.Either option will need to be carefully situated if the bed is draped and canopied so that the sidedrapery doesn’t interfere with viewing. Ideally, the television will be equipped with remote headphonesso that the viewer will not disturb the person reading or sleeping.

Side tables for the bed are growing even larger to provide storage and table top space for the accessoriesof this user-friendly ‘nest’. The two bedside tables needn’t be identical, but should reflect the personalneeds of the individual sleeper. In fact, current styles don’t call for the traditional ‘bedroom set’ at all,but invite creativity and better functionality with individual pieces that work well together.

Deep, rich wall colors create a sense of tranquility as well as a hint of drama in a bedroom. Rugs, draperies, tapestries, upholstered walls, furniture, and plants all can act as important sound absorbingelements to provide an intimate setting or solitude. A large framed floor-length mirror can add interestas well as serve for dressing purposes. Lighting must also be carefully selected. Lamps with fairlyheavy shades and three way switches allow for reading and task lighting while offering a low setting tosoften the mood.

A wonderful master bedroom, even with minimal extra square footage, should be used as an integral part of your living space. Make it personal, cozy, functional, and private and you’ll find yourself retreating there moreoften than ever before.

MASSAGE$ 40

OR GIFT CERTIFICATEMy Personal shopping service is available for women who don't have timeto hunt through racks of clothing, don't know what looks good on them,

or just don't like to shop. I can take the stress and frustration out of looking your best. Contact me at Sheliafrey.com or 770/893-8944.

I don't know about you, but I gained a few lbs. (pounds) this holiday season. While attempting to shedthe unwanted pounds I may be tempted to throw on a baggy T-shirt and some loose sweat pants to hidemy extra flab. But we all know that bulky clothes just make us look bigger. If you are trying to loseweight or just want to look a little slimmer, check out the tips below. No dieting necessary!

• Be fitted for a bra. Wearing a proper-fitting bra will lift your breasts and thin out your middle section.

• Stand up straight. When you slouch, your midsection will automatically appear heavier.

• Wear dark colors. All dark colors, not just black, can make you appear slimmer. Think navy, charcoalgrey, burgundy, dark red or forest green.

• Dress monochromatically. One color creates an elongated silhouette which will make you appeartaller and slimmer.

• Nude heels will lengthen the leg and they go with just about everything.

• Tailor your clothing to skim your curves and visually take off pounds.

• Keep your purse in proportion with your body shape and height. Big girls need bigger bags.

• Draw the eye up with V-necks, scoop-necks, and sweetheart necklines.

• If you carry your weight in the top half of the body, avoid the ice cream cone look by balancing thebottom half with a slightly wider straight leg pant. No skinny pants or jeans.

• Avoid cap sleeves or puffed sleeved blouses and tops.

• Try sweaters with a looser weave that don't cling. Avoid chunky or ribbed turtlenecks.

• If you have a thick neck, trade out choker necklaces for longer chain necklaces.

• Don't let your hair make you look heavier. Choose a hairstyle that doesn't add bulk. Face framinglayers that sculpt the face are better than a short, blunt cut that adds width.

• Trade the thick, knit muffler for a slim cashmere scarf.

• Don't settle for ugly shoes when you can find comfortable, attractive shoes. If you have wide feetand thick ankles avoid thin heels and shoes with ankle straps. Try a stacked heel or wedge.

• Do not wear leggings in place of pants with a big top or sweater.

• Don't chop your leg length off by wearing shoe- booties or short boots with skirts and dresses.

• If your sweetheart gives you a big box of chocolates on February 14th, take it to the office and shareit with your co-workers.

Overcoming Obstacles and Changing His Life…And You Can Do It Too! by Jason GoggansAbout 3 years ago I got a call from one of my boot camp clients asking me if I was available to dosome personal training for her husband, Matt Burton. She said he had been working out on his ownand had gotten decent results but that his results had plateaued. In February of that year I begantraining Matt in his home gym 3-5 times a week. During my first meeting with Matt, we discussedhis background and some of the challenges he faces in his efforts to lose weight and get fit.

Matt was like many other husbands and fathers. He owns his own business (Narwhal Capital spe-cializing in asset management), travels a lot, has five kids, and to say his life is hectic is a huge under-statement. When he wasn’t working he was attending sporting events, shuffling kids to school, helpingthem with homework, spending time with his wife, etc. Talk about obstacles…he had them!

Due to this chaotic lifestyle he, like many others in his situation, had completely let himself go. It’snot easy to find time to exercise when you are keeping that kind of schedule. One day Matt lookeddown and realized that he weighed more than he ever had (260 lbs) and was less active than he everhad been. He was completely unhappy with the way he looked and felt.

Fed up with what his physical life had become, Matt began working out on his own and was able tolose 20 lbs. That was the point, however, that he plateaued and became increasingly frustrated. Sens-ing the frustration, Matt’s wife Mary, reached out to me for help.

During my first session with Matt I realized the kind of individual I was dealing with. Matt turnedout to be unbelievably motivated, unbelievably driven, and highly competitive…a personal trainer’sdream client! Once Matt made the decision to change his life and get his health and fitness undercontrol there was no stopping him. He had achieved so much success in every other facet of his life, but now it was time to turn a little of the attention to himself and his health.

After about 7 months of training, Matt lost 61 lbs, 21% body fat and 7 inches in his waist alone! Heaccomplished all of this while still running a successful business, still having to be a father of 5 kids, still having to travel, and still having to be a loving and supportive husband. Today Matt weighs 200lbs, is 15% body fat, and has a 33 inch waist (see before and after pictures in the ad below). He feelsgreat, looks great, and has become an inspiration for so many people….oh and Matt’s not some 26

year old whippersnapper. He’s 45 years old!

So, what was Matt’s secret. It’s simple. He made a decision to make himself and his health a priority. He decided that to be the best father, husband, and business owner he could be he needed to takecare of himself first and that’s exactly what he did. No matter what he had on his plate he was alwaysin his basement (sometimes at 5:00 in the morning) ready to not only workout but to give the workouteverything he had. He tackled his workout sessions like he tackled everything else in life…with 110%effort and it paid off big time!

That’s really all it takes. You must decide to make it a priority. When you decide to make exerciseand your health a bigger priority than most other things in life then very few things will get in theway. Exercise needs to be like brushing your teeth, non-negotiable. That’s what Matt did. He didn’tsay “I don’t have time to exercise”, he found time. He didn’t say “I’m too tired to exercise”, he pushedthrough and made it happen. Matt realized that those excuses were just that, excuses. Also, whenlife did throw him a curve ball and he “fell off the exercise wagon” so to speak, he jumped RIGHTback on when he was able. As Matt puts it “maturity in anything is not measured in how many timesyou fail or succeed, but in the time it takes you to return once you fail. I am not a machine – I justlearn to get back on it as soon as possible.”

Matt is truly an inspiration to me and the people around him. It’s safe to say that by accomplishingwhat he accomplished, with the obstacles he had in his way, Matt changed more lives than just hisown….and you can do it too.

So when you feel like that deck is stacked against you and you don’t think you have the time and/orenergy to properly take care of yourself just think of Matt and let his story inspire you. I know I do.

HOW A COUPLE MANAGES CONFLICT

PREDICTS SUCCESS IN MARRIAGEby Leisa A. Bailey, Ph.D.

When celebrating Valentine’s Day each person can recommit to a better marriage by improving the im-portant skills of conflict management. Marriage is not easy; and even good, committed people will in-evitably find areas of disagreement or conflict. Research shows how a couple navigates inevitabledifferences are predictive of the overall level of happiness and marital success.

John Gottman Ph.D., a psychologist and marital relationship expert, can predict the long-term successor failure of a relationship with 94% accuracy by watching the first three minutes of a couple discussesan area of disagreement. He bases his predictions on the success or failure of repairs attempts, and theuse of destructive communication styles. Dr. Gottman has discovered that in all conflict, successfulmanagement involves skills – skills that anyone can develop – to improve a marriage.

Dr. Gottman’s research can be found in his best-selling book, The Seven Principles for Making Mar-riage Work. To summarize Dr. Gottman’s extensive writing: the use of softened startups, the ability toaccept influence, the use of effective repairs, the skills to de-escalate the intensity of conflict, the abilityto sooth intense emotional responses, and the ability to compromise are the critical skills involved in suc-cessful conflict resolution.

Softened startup describes effectively bringing up a topic for discussion in a way that is respectful andproductive. If issues are initiated in a positive way, it is much more likely the discussion will be successful.Dr. Gottman’s research has revealed that discussions invariably end on the same note they begin. If youstart an argument too harshly at attacking your partner verbally, you will end up with at least as muchtension as you began with.

To begin discussion of a potentially difficult issue the following skills are important:

• Be concise. Describe the complaint, be brief, and then stop.

• Complain but don’t blame. Complaining in ok but criticizing is not.

• Start with an appreciation of something positive. Think of a time when the issue was better andgive an appreciation of your partner’s actions at that time.

• Make “I” statements instead of “You”. This helps avoid criticism and encourages the discussionto be about requests about needs and desires. Focus on how you’re feeling and not on accusingyour spouse.

• Describe – don’t evaluate or judge.

• Be polite and appreciative. Just because you are in conflict, does not mean that your respect andaffection has to diminish. Maintain warmth and emotional connection even during a difficultconversation.

Repair attempts are important when disagreements become unproductive or begin to become negative. The ability to stop is a repair attempt because it de-escalates the tension. It is any statement or actionthat prevents negativity from escalating out of control. Repair attempts can be an apology, a joke tolighten the mood, or many other actions that decrease the overall tension.

Soothing involves the ability to calm and quiet when in conflict. Research shows that in serious negativeencounters, the autonomic nervous system in engaged and the “fight or flight” impulses are triggered.Being able to sooth is essential to the ability to stay engaged in a positive and productive way. If thissoothing is not possible, a time out (of at least 20 minutes) is indicated before the discussion can be suc-cessfully continued.

Some couples fear conflict because of the belief it indicates something is wrong or missing in the mar-riage. This is simply untrue. Some conflict is inevitable and when managed in respectful and effectiveways, disagreements do not damage the friendship and bond of marriage.

“Love is saying “I feel differently” instead of “you’re wrong.”~Brandi Snyder~

“Life is a series of dogs”- George Carlin

One dog in my series was “Savannah”, a beautiful 13 year old, white German Shepherd. We were introducedin the fall of 2009 when I began dating my boyfriend. She was quiet, but attentive. Watching her bathe inthe sun, she was so full of life...but when she tried to stand and walk, you instantly saw the frustration anddiscomfort. Savannah had a condition all too familiar to her breed, called Degenerative Myelopathy or DM,a slowly progressive disease that affects the spinal cord and a dog's ability to walk.

In December 2009, she seemed to be taking a turn for the worst. My boyfriend and I were faced with whatmost pet owners dread and even deny...is it “time”?

As we struggled with that decision and considered the affect Savannah’s passing would have on his 7 yearold, we decided to bring home a Labrador Retriever puppy offered to us by a good friend.

Whether it’s plausible or not, we feel Savannah knew we were considering the end and even “replacing her”with the puppy; she rallied back with a rather sudden “recovery” of sorts. She began eating better, walkingbetter, generally just seemed to be feeling better and happier. We enjoyed another year with the gentle soulwho maintained her position as the matriarch of our now 3 dog family. She both loved and disciplined thenew arrival and with watchful eye would sun herself at the dog park while the little one played nearby.

I feel our pets can teach us many lessons about life, both living it & leaving it, if we would only choose tolisten. Savannah welcomed each day bright-eyed and excited.

She was happy just being near those she loved. When she didn’t feel well, she laid patiently and quietly, rarely whining or complaining-she disliked being a “bother” and she preferred to keep trying to do thingson her own.

Time began to catch up to her and in December 2010 when she no longer had the ability to get herself up,it was obvious that we needed to make a decision.

As we toiled over when, where, and whowould do it...the euthanasia that is...weprayed she would hang in there for onemore Christmas.

Savannah was one of those dogs withhorrible anxiety when going to see theveterinarian. It was sheer panic...drool-ing buckets, incessant shaking and hairfalling out in clumps was just the tip of the iceberg. Wecouldn’t imagine putting her (or us) through that stress in the last moments of her life, so whenwe learned of a service that specializes in euthanasia done in your home, we were grateful.

I had heard a thousand times from people that we would know when the time was right.

On December 8, 2010, Savannah did let us know it was her time. It’s so difficult to explain, we “just knew”.

We were able to schedule an appointment for the in-home euthanasia that fit our schedule, allowing us to gatherfriends and family to stop by for a visit and say their goodbyes. Savannah seemed to enjoy the extra special at-tention...the hugs, kisses, belly rubs by the fireplace while lounging on her favorite dog bed...& the popcorn(her favorite). We took pictures by the Christmas tree, told stories, laughed, cried and cried some more.

When Dr. Amy Crowder and her assistant from Sweet Dreams In-Home Pet Euthanasia arrived, they didn’teven seem to mind that we had a house full and they waited patiently until we were ready to begin.

They had prepared us well and we knew exactly what they would do during the procedure, but it was stillcomforting as they talked us through this difficult moment, step by step. It couldn’t have been more calmand peaceful. Dr. Crowder and her assistant were so kind and helpful as we cried, they gently offered reas-surance, presented us a clay paw print for remembrance and very respectfully took Savannah with them forour requested private cremation.

Now just over two years later, Savannah is still greatly missed. Our memories of her bring smiles and ourlove for her is forever. I’m sure I’m not alone in never wanting to say goodbye...I have no choice in that, but we felt good knowing we were able to choose the way we said goodbye.

Making a decision to euthanize a pet is not easy. There are many resources to assist you in determining whatthe best options are for your individual needs and situation. Please consult your primary care veterinarianfor support and to help answer any questions you may have.

If you're selling your house, one of the first steps you'll take is setting an asking price, a maneuver that re-quires the ability to find the perfect balance between attracting solid offers and ultimately receiving topdollar.

If you're working with a Realtor or other industry professional, you'll probably hear talk of fair marketvalue, which typically means the highest value an educated buyer will pay. Fair market value is usually notthe asking price.

Many agents will begin by conducting a competitive market analysis of your house and give you an estimateof the fair market value of your home. The analysis takes into consideration comparable home sales, typ-ically over the last year, taking into consideration similarities and differences between the other homes andyours. It will also consider the housing market in your area.

If you're in a hot seller's market, like several communities throughout metro Atlanta, you'll have the ad-vantage.

Over the last several months, the market has been gaining steam, and the seller is in the driver’s seat. Insome areas, the average number of days on the market went from 30 days to 7 days or less. This is greatnews for sellers, but you'll still want to be careful and avoid pricing your home too high, which almostalways means your house will stay on the market longer.

As you work with your agent and set your price, you'll want to ask yourself (and your agent):

• What are the facts relative to my house for this market? Be careful when youconsider pricing to focus on the factual data available versus emotional connections.

• What are the market conditions for your specific neighborhood and community? Not all communities are created equal in this market. And, not all neighborhoodswithin a community are created equal. It can be a complex equation to get your price just right.

• How does my house stack up against the competition? This one is very tricky. It’s often helpful to take a step back and view your house as if you were an incoming buyer. Yourreal estate professional can also help you evaluate this. Your agent, as well as friends, relatives, andneighbors, can assist you by pointing out your house's advantages and disadvantages from a moreobjective viewpoint.

• Am I being realistic? You absolutely want top dollar for your investment, but be careful toseparate this from the emotional attachment you may have to your home. Also consider your mo-tivation for selling your house.

Here are some other things to thoughtfully consider as you evaluate putting your house on the market:

Some upgrades and home improvements warrant being included in your asking price consideration. Kitchenrenovations, bathroom renovations and some others should be factored in. Some are lifestyle additionsthat you and your family enjoyed while you are living in the home. Also, the more personal the improve-ment—a swimming pool, a sunroom, purple floors—the less likely it will be viewed favorably by potentialbuyers. While you may be able to recoup some of your investment, it won't give you 100 percent of whatyou paid. Your real estate agent can help you evaluate what return percentage you can expect on yourhome’s improvements.

Another common issue is that your home may have lessened in value since you purchased it – which is thecase for many homeowners in today’s market. Some sellers’ want to recoup as much of their original in-vestment as possible with housing sales trending upwards. This can be a slippery slope. Make sure you haveobjective, comparable and recent data – sold comps, pending sales and other data - to prove what the truemarket value is. Research shows that listing your house for as little as 1%-3% above market value canactually reduce the buyer’s perceived bargaining power causing your house to stay on the market longer.

Evaluate and be honest about your priorities. Are you more concerned with sellingquickly or getting the most money possible? Unfortunately, this is a case where itis one or the other, rarely is it both. You'll also want to contemplate your priceand determine – objectively - whether you would pay that amount if you werea buyer.

You can reach me via cell, email, Facebook or Twitter and let me know if Ican assist you with a free, personalized market analysis for your home.

S-LIFT FACELIFT SHORT SCAR FACELIFT

S-Lift, also known as the short scar facelift, is a surgical face-lifting procedure that focuses onthe lower two-thirds of the face to reverse unwelcome signs of aging. By permanently suspendingand tightening muscles in the lower face and neck, the S-Lift significantly improves the appearanceof sagging jowls, neck skin. This softens deep nasolabial folds and restores definition to thecheeks and jaw line. Wrinkles, grooves and excess facial and neck skin disappear with this mini-mally invasive procedure. The S-Lift is an excellent option for patientswith mild to moderate sagging of the cheek and neck skin.

S-Lift is ideal for the younger patient with minimal excessneck skin. S-Lift incisions are hidden behind the earand in the hairline. The procedure can beautifullyre-contour the neck & chin without distortingthe hairline.

The procedure is typically performedunder local anesthesia in the office. After you are anesthetized andprepped in sterile fashion, the sur-geon will make the incisions andwork through them to separate theskin from the fat and muscle below. If there is significant neck fat andjowling, the surgeon will performneck liposuction to improve thecontour of the neck and jawline. After undermining, the deep, looselayer of tissue is pulled up using su-tures to tighten. The loose neck andcheek skin is then pulled up, excess skinis removed, and the resulting defect is su-tured in place.

The incision is about one-half the length of atraditional facelift incision and extends fromyour temporal hairline to the ear.

Mild pain and discomfort, swelling, bruising, puffiness, numbness and paleness are all normal and to be expected afterthe procedure. These issues clear gradually over several days, howeversome bruising will take 2-3 weeks to resolve. Typically patients are presentable and ableto return to work in about two weeks. You will not be able to perform any strenuous activitiesuntil healing is complete-2-3 weeks at least.

If you feel that may be a candidate for the S-Lift and would like a free cosmetic consultation, please contact Dr. Kayal at 770-426-7177.

We interviewed several realtors before listing with DeborahRatchford. From the very first time we met her, she was aplethora of local market knowledge and experience, exuding the

confidence we needed to see to sellour home. Deborah priced ourhouse at a fair market value andtold us it would sell in less than 3months. As Deborah stated, it didsell in less than 3 months. From day1 of the listing Deborah and herteam ran an aggressive marketingcampaign to get our home the at-tention it needed to sell. Little didwe realize how lucky we were in se-lecting her when it came time to ne-

gotiations. We really wanted to sell and Deborah wanted topdollar for us! She very carefully negotiated top dollar for uswithout sending the buyer away. We can’t thank Deborahenough for all of her expertise!!! Alan & Heidi Gray

Deb Did It Again! As first time home buyers, we could not haveasked for a better agent than Deb. She was great to work withthroughout the entire process. Sheexplained the steps in buying ourfirst home in great detail-before,during and after-she was alwayshelpful. And, when it was time tomake an offer, we were educatedand ready. You could tell that shetruly cared and wanted to find theperfect home for us and our newaddition (coming soon!). Thanks,Deb! Dusten and Erika Coty
