Snarks in the Kitchen

What in the world is going on in Sverre Riise’s kitchen? Trombone music by Norwegian composers Arne Nordheim, Jon Øivind Ness and Ørjan Matre.

Works written especially for the trombone is a rare thing, so Riise got in touch with some of the fore-most Norwegian composers to change that. Ørjan Matre has a distinct sense of working with sound, which is very clear in «...since I say it now» The piece shows a playing technique where the trombonist sings while playing. Jon Øivind Ness is known for the humorous undertones in his music, like what we hear in ‘’The Dangerous Kitten’’ from 1998, inspired by Zappa’s «The Dangerous Kitchen» He has previously stated that he’s stepping away from his humorous image, but «Moray» seems to be an excep-tion. A moray is actually an eel-like, blood thirsty fish, and the subtitle should be read in a lisp - ‘’The piece formerly known as Phekph Piphtolph’’.Arne Nordheim is one of the most well-known Norwegian composers of our time. He himself had a background as a trombonist, givinghim an advantage in understanding the instrument’s techniques. His legendary pieces ‘’The Hunting of the Snark’’ and ‘’The Return of the Snark’’ are based on Lewis Carroll’s nonsense verse. Nordheim uses the trombone to represent the sound a «snark» might havemade if it was real. In addition, the piece ‘’Vevnad’’ is recorded for the first time on this release.

LANG, DAVID - The Difficulty of Crossing a Field

Based on a one-page story by Ambrose Bierce, the difficulty of crossing a field is a joint collaboration in musical theater between composer David Lang and playwright Mac Wellman that recounts, in the words of a recent New York Times performance review, “a strange disappearance and what the neigh-bors have to say about it.”Mixing arias with spoken text and emotional melodies with tense drama, the story takes place in 1854 near Selma, Alabama, where a planter named Williamson has vanished without a trace while crossing a field. The original production was staged in March 2002 at the Theater Artaud in San Francisco, starring Julia Migenes as the wife of Williamson, and Tony-award winning singer Anika Noni Rose as the lea-der of the slave chorus, with music performed onstage by the Kronos Quartet. This recording of the difficulty of crossing a field was tracked and produced by Lawson White, in par-tnership with Beth Morrison Projects, and features the Harlem String Quartet and an A-list of of New York City’s established and emerging talent in opera and theater, including Beverly O’Regan Thiele, Laquita Mitchell and Jay O. Sanders.

MAHLER / SCHÖNBERG / RIEHN - Das Lied von der Erde

As little as it was perceived by the general public during its short existence, in accordance with its gene-sis, all the more remarkable were the effects and the aftereffects of the Society for Musical Private Per-formances, founded by Arnold Schoenberg in Mödling near Vienna in November 1918, especially as it was associated with the intention to keep away unpopular and malicious critics and ‘to give Arnold Schoenberg the opportunity personally to carry out his intention of providing artists and art lovers with a veritable and precise knowledge of Modern Music’, as Alban Berg described in a leaflet in 1919. A speciality of the society concerts was that within the framework of the means available by no meansexclusively chamber music, solo pieces and songs were performed, but to a great extent also originally large-scale orchestral works, for which topical, artistically top-quality were produced. Among Mahler’s works, Symphonies Nos. 4, 6 and 7 and the Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen could be presented this way. In autumn 1921, he embarked on the arrangement of Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, which, however, he broke off in the middle of the first movement. The continuation was to be taken over by Webern, but this did not happen, evidently as a consequence of the end of the society. It was only in 1982/83 that the German composer, conductor and musicologist Rainer Riehn (b. 1941) was prepared to continue what had been begun.

DVORAK, ANTONIN - Sacred Songs

The Biblical Songs op. 99 were written in 1894 during Dvorák’s time in America (1892-95), when he was working as artistic director and professor of composition at the New York Conservatory of Music. His 9th Symphony, appositely termed ‘From the New World’ was to be followed by a further symphony, but Dvorák opted for treating the Biblical Songs, which, in their austerity, hardly allow scope for Ame-rican scent but are rather reminiscent of the composer’s Czech homeland, if of anything concrete at all.The fact that the composer so intensively studied the psalms of the Old Testament was not least connec-ted to external circumstances, e.g. to the economic crisis of 1893, which also affected the New York Conservatory. He was also suffering from the death of Hans von Bu¨low, was grieving for Gounod and Tchaikovsky and in addition, he learnt about the grave sickness of his father, who died two days after the Biblical Songs had been completed. Dvorák, the Catholic, had long demonstrated his faith with numerous works of fervent piety: Stabat Mater (1876), Requiem (1890), the Mass in D major as well as the pieces for solo voice and organ, for instance, the works that can be heard on this CD - Ave Maria, Ave Maris Stella and Hymnus ad laudes in festo Sanctae Trinitatis (1877-79) as well as the preludes and fugues for organ of 1859 by the then 18-year-old.

MANKELL, HENNING / NYSTROEM, GÖSTA - Piano Concerto Op.30 / Concer-to ricercante

Henning Mankell (1868-1930), whose grandson and namesake has become one of Sweden’s most suc-cessful authors of crime novels, was himself a modest person, not very interested in a public career. Mankell earned his livelihood as a private teacher of piano and music theory in Stockholm, as a music critic and as a member of the board of the Academy of Music. If Mankell’s life was a tranquil one, his compositions were all the more colourful, at least those from the last two decades of his life. His works were given labels such as ‘Impressionism’ or ‘Futurism’ by the critics of the age. Many of Mankell’s works, and especially the bolder ones, remained unpublished for a long time, but were still occasionally performed by musicians who recognized their value.Gösta Nystroem (1890-1966) had an obvious talent both for pictorial art and music. He had a lifelong fascination for the sea and loved to be among fishermen, sometimes even taking part in their work at sea. Two composers had a special influence on him in Paris: Stravinsky and Honegger.

MOSOLOV, ALEXANDER - Iron Foundry / Piano Concerto No. 1 / Legend Op. 5 / Sonata Op. 3

Among his contemporary countrymen, the Russian Alexander Mosolov certainly underwent one of the most individual developments. However unknown most of his compositions have remained both in the Soviet Union and abroad, a single piece has ensured that his name has stayed lastingly present – the Iron Foundry from the ballet «Steel» (1926/27). It clearly ran contrary to the demands of ‘Socialist Realism’ gradually becoming established in the post-revolutionary Soviet Union and finally declared the official dogma by the authorities in 1932. Whereas the state demanded a kind of music that was easy to receive and could be directly accepted by broad sections of the population, some young compo-sers saw themselves facing the challenge of keeping pace with the international avant-garde and adding a separate Russian and Soviet form. Also active as a music official, Mosolov quickly found recognition in the young Moscow music scene. He soon worked in the Association of Contemporary Music (ASM) and got to know many foreign colleagues, whose works were performed in Russia at the time not least due to his efforts, including Alban Berg, Paul Hindemith, Alfredo Casella, Darius Milhaud and Arthur Honegger.

DUTILLEUX, HENRI - Symphony No. 1

Henri Dutilleux, named as “van Gogh of classical music” (Die Welt), has been a long time of his artistic life a maverick, dreamy and stubborn man, looking for his own style between tradition and moder-nism orientated to his great paragons Dukas, Ravel and Roussel. ‘I’m composing colours’ he always pointed out and admit his work not only to impressionism but also to his great reverence to van Gogh. This colourful music finaly helps for a much to late success and tribute of his compositions, especially his orchestral works. This CD Production offers the rarely performed 1st symphony, the nearly unknown two orchestral songs by poems of Jean Cassou and finally the much better known Métaboles.

MASCAGNI, PIETRO / ROTA, NINO - Rapsodia Satanica / Il Gattopardo

Pietro Mascagni’s single work for the early days of cinema was composed in winter time 1914/15.The idea of the film director Nino Oxilia was to create a “Poema cine-musicale”, a synthesis of the arts with music, poetry and finally cinematography. The plot is something like a female version of “Faust”, based on a poetry by Fausto Maria Martini. Mascagni itself conducted the first performance in July 1917 and orientated his composition near to Richard Wagners musical language. The French-German TV channel Arte restored this treasure of early cinema in 2006 and recorded the complete film music score which is now available also on CD.

CAR83314BACH, JOHANN SEBASTIAN - Messe in H-Moll

GÄCHINGER kANTOREI STUTTGART - FREIBURGER BAROCkOR-CHESTER - RADEMANN, HANS-CHRISTOPH

Carus

The Mass in B minor by Johann Sebastian Bach is one of the central sacred vocal compositions in the history of music. Hans-Christoph Rademann, as successor of Helmuth Rilling, has now devoted his first CD as director of the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart to this outstanding work and, together with the Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart and the Freiburger Barockorchester as well as renowned soloists in the field of historically informed performance practice, has set new artistic standards.Although the Mass in B minor is one of Johann Sebastian Bach’s most frequently performed vocal works, it continues to present performers and scientists with new enigmas and problems. Directly after his death, the original manuscript was massively changed by his son Carl Philipp Ema-nuel; changes which, until today, pose many questions to researchers. The present new recording rigorously follows – in the Kyrie and Gloria – Bach’s own meticulously configured “Dresdner Stimmen” [Dresden parts] and is thereby based, for the first time, exclusively on the musical text that emanated from Johann Sebastian Bach’s pen. Furthermore, additional movements with marked deviations from today’s familiar version have been made accessible as variants in the bonus material. The recording is based upon the new edition by the renowned Bach and Mozart scholar Ulrich Leisinger in cooperation with the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin and the Bach-Archiv Leipzig, who also prepared the introduction in the CD booklet.

LISZT, FRANZ - Sacred Choral Music

Franz Liszt was one of those composers who permanently altered the musical culture of the 19th century. However, his sacred vocal works are still overshadowed by his piano music. Pioneering elements – which Liszt always knew how to combine with a simple tonal language which was appropriate – are, however, to be found particularly in his smaller sacred works. Hans-Joachim Lustig and the Kammerchor (chamber choir) I Vocalisti present a selection of this music that is well worth listening to and, in so doing, give us comprehensive view of Liszt’s choral oeuvre.

Les Sauvages by Béatrice Martin carries you beyond the seriousness of this world to-wards the celestial delights of an ‘oriental’ dream drawn in Indian ink. For her first solo disc, Béatrice Martin has chosen one of the most prestigious harpsichords made by the famous Ruckers of Antwerp, an instrument until then never used in a recording, and an encounter of truly heartfelt emotion. With this alchemy of the ineffable – that of the grea-test artistes of this world – Béatrice Martin harmonises the sensitivity, the fervour and the fantasies of the uncontested masters of the French harpsichord school: apart from these veritable ‘hits’ of the French baroque that are Les Sauvages, L’Egyptienne and La Passacaille d’Armide, this unique disc is a waking dream. Coloured with that exoticism so dear to Rameau, Couperin, Forqueray and yet also Royer and Anglebert, it brigh-tens, with its ‘Lights’ of the kingdom of France, this exquisite world of a long-awaited elsewhere, this dream of the Phoenix come from an unexpected ‘Orient’. Listeners, yield yourselves – a thousand and one nights – to the infinitely matchless touch of one of the finest international harpsichord players.

bach | concertos pour clavecin | CYP1661

For Béatrice Martin the desire to record these concertos for harpsichord and strings stemmed from the conjuncture of two magnificently sounding instruments: a harpsichord by the Hamburg maker Chris-tian Zell (1737) and one by the Barcelona maker Johan Marti, built in 2001 after the model of Zell. The chamber formation of the Folies Françoises that accompanies these robust, heady harpsichords corresponds not only to the letter but also very much to the spirit of these works.Barcode: 5412217016616

NIELSEN, CARL - The Symphonies & Concertos

Raised in the Danish countryside as the son of a poor folk musician, Carl Nielsen’s indomitable cou-rage and infinite curiosity helped him develop into one of the greatest symphonists of the 20th century and eventually Denmark’s national composer. This 4 SACD box set collects the acclaimed live recor-ding series of Nielsen’s complete symphonies and concertos by the New York Philhamonic, Music Di-rector Alan Gilbert and soloists Nikolaj Znaider (violin), Robert Langevin (flute) and Anthony McGill (clarinet).Carl Nielsen’s six symphonies and three solo concertos form the core of his orchestral music. Each relates to the classical tradition in its own very personal way, and at the same time the nine works show how Nielsen developed and increasingly moved away from the conventions. Carl Nielsen constantly challenged himself and his audience. The late works complete the picture of an artistic development that was always ahead of his surroundings. To this we must add Nielsen’s profoundly original tonal idiom, at once quirky, straightforwardand visionary, which makes it hard to place his music in the usual stylistic and historical categories.

NIELSEN, CARL - Concertos

“I think in terms of the instruments themselves – I sort of creep into their souls”, said Carl Nielsen (1865-1931). His three solo concertos for violin, flute and clarinet concertos are hi-ghly characteristic and expressive works that show how Nielsen developed as a composer, increasingly distancing himself from the classical conventions. This new recording by New York Philharmonic and Alan Gilbert concludes the acclaimed Nielsen Project with Nikolaj Znaider, Robert Langevin, and Anthony McGill as the soloists in vivid live recordings from Avery Fisher Hall.

With over forty CDs to their credit and a busy concert schedule stretching back more than thirty years, the British piano duo of Anthony Goldstone and Caroline Clemmow is firmly established as a leading force. Their recordings are not only brilliant performances but usually innovatively programmed, leading to rave reviews for every album. Here, we have two major world premieres: the first recording of the piano duet transcription by lieder-writer Robert Franz of the ‘Death and the Maiden’ Quartet, and a work which has many critics already lining up to hear it – the first recording of the ‘Unfinished’ Symphony in full four-movement performing edition for piano duet including arrangements by Anselm Hüttenbrenner (Schubert’s friend), Anthony Goldstone, and Friedrich Hermann. It includes a completion of Schubert’s part finished Scherzo and the Rosamunde Entr’acte, widely belie-ved to have been intended as the finale.

WHITLOCK, LUKE - Flowing Waters

Luke Whitlock was born in Exeter in 1978 into a musical family. He started composing in his early teens and went on to study at Dartington College of Arts and then for his master’s degree at the Royal College of Music. After leaving formal education Luke was employed by the Royal College of Music and also taught at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. He is now a BBC producer, working with Radio 3 and Radio 4.His music is definitively neo-Romantic, exceptionally lyrical and traditional in tonality and harmony and so will appeal to a wide audience not familiar with core classical/niche art mu-sic. Neither is his writing simplistic, but speaks simply from his soul with beautifully balanced phrases and often a deep sense of fun.Highly acclaimed pianist Duncan Honeybourne performs solo piano works, alongside two delightful chamber pieces.

Mozart after Mozart

Hummel’s affinity with Mozart’s musical language went back a long way. It began in 1786, when the very young Johann Nepomuk lodged with the Mozart family in their home for two years. Here, the young musician participated in the public and private life of the composer, coming into direct contact with all the works that emerged during those years, which were indisputably among the most fertile of Mozart’s entire career. Hummel’s interest in, and deep knowledge of, his teacher’s works for fortepiano and orchestra is at-tested by many accounts: apart from witnessing the birth of several masterpieces from these years, Hummel must himself have studied these pieces on more than one occasion with his teacher, giving public performances of them, also in his presence. This recognised authority, added to the widespread approval that he enjoyed as a composer and to a growing desire in the music world to rediscover the masters of the past, created the context in which Hummel produced his numerous transcriptions (approximately fifty), which are scored principally for flute, violin, cello and fortepiano. The particular historical value of these transcriptions resides also in the solutions offered by Hummel for the application of improvisatory practices, particularly the inclusion of cadenzas and Eingänge (inthe outer movements) and the embellishments, ‘expressly written’, mainly in the middle movements.

Violin Music in 18th-Century Italy

For many people, the poetry of the violinist Enrico Gatti, which we have been enjoying in concerts and on recordings (for labels such as Symphonia, Arcana and Glossa) for more than three decades is unparalleled when addressing the subtlest of Italian music from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. For this 1992 recording, Gatti alights upon some of the loveliest of eighteenth-century pieces for his instrument which were composed for the Court of Savoy in Turin, including works by Somis, Giardini and Pugnani, unveiling for us a fascinating and seldom-visited world.

Quite probably the leading specialists today in Harmoniemusik – the genre so fashionable in Vienna and its surrounding area as the eighteenth century turned into the nineteenth – these musicians, here operating as a sextet and playing delightfully sounding original instruments, give us an entire disc devoted to the Bohemian composer Franz Krommer, with music full of vibrancy and humour.

The Dunedin Consort presents the premiere recording of Mozart scholar David Black’s new 2013 edition of Süssmayr’s completion of Mozart’s Requiem. This GRAMMY-nominated recording provides the opportunity to reimagine what this work may have sounded like at its very first performance and won Du-nedin Consort its second Gramophone Award. The recording is the first not only to use this new edition, but also to present the work using forces close in style and scale to those at the first performances. One striking element of these performances is the fact that the soloists are also the leaders of the choir, thus giving a greater consistency to the relationship between the solo numbers and the choruses.Taking centre stage are soloists Joanne Lunn soprano, Rowan Hellier alto, Tho-mas Hobbs tenor and Matthew Brook bass-baritone. The pressing is on 180 gram vinyl and is manufactured by the prestigious Pallas firm in Germany, which is highly regarded by vinyl lovers everywhere.

Alban Berg - Olivier Messiaen

Four Pieces for Clarinet and Piano (1913) were created by Alban Berg, one of the pupils of Arnold Schoenberg, the founder of the Second Viennese School, in a period of an intense creative ascent, a year before he began to work on his opera Wozzeck.Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time is arguably one of the most amazing pages of chamber music of the 20th century. It was composed during the composer’s stay in German prisoner-of-war camp where it was premiered in January of 1941.The works were first performed in the former USSR for the first time in 1998 at the Gift to the Vine music festival in the Georgian city of Telavi. The festival was initiated by two outstanding Soviet musi-cians – cellist Natalia Gutman and violinist Oleg Kagan. The composer and pianist Vasily Lobanov and Swiss clarinetist, then a member of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Eduard Brunner, both recognized interpreters of contemporary music, were among the participants of the festival. A year later, the Quartet for the End of Time was performed by the same line-up in Moscow. The featured recording was made at one of the last performances of Oleg Kagan who passed away prematurely in 1990.

WEINBERG, MOISEY - Cello / Violin / Flute Concertos

“One of the outstanding composers of modern times”, as Dmitri Shostakovich spoke about Weinberg. Weinberg’s artistic personality was formed from a blend of three cultures – Polish, Jewish and Russian. Similar to Shostakovich, he reproduced the spirit of the era, hopes and feelings of the contemporaries in his music.A symphonist by nature, Weinberg devoted much attention to the genre of concerto. The album fea-tures the composer’s most significant works in the area. Weinberg was on friendly terms with some of the greatest performers of his time. So, the second edition of his large-scale cello concerto (1956) that was conceptually close to symphony was performed for the first time by the legendary Mstislav Rostro-povich. The violin concerto (1959), a sharply dramatic and at the same time full of virtuosic lustre, was dedicated to the prominent violinist Leonid Kogan. The concerto for flute and string orchestra (1961) that revived the traditions of neoclassicism was written for the flutist Alexander Korneyev and the first ever Soviet chamber ensemble – the Moscow Chamber Orchestra – conducted by Rudolf Barshai.

SCHNITTKE, ALFRED - Symphony No. 1

Schnittke, an outstanding master of Russian music avant-garde, composed the symphony in 1969 to 1972. The composer’s first large-scale orchestral piece made an epoch in history of symphonic music in general combining for the first time the traditions with radical innovation, a two-century branch of the evolution of the symphonic genre with an ultimately modern musical language through the techniques of dodecaphony, aleatoric music, polystylistic devices, jazz improvisation and the so-called instrumental theatre.A piece like this could not be preformed freely under the circumstances of the Soviet time with its ideological censorship. It was premiered in 1974 in the city of Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod) that was closed for foreign visitors. A year later it was performed in Tallinn, and the Moscow premiere took place as late as in 1986.The symphony was dedicated to its first performer and outstanding conductor Gennady Rozhdes-tvensky who was an ardent advocate of Schnittke’s music and also initiated its recording. That recor-ding is featured in the release.

Russian Songs and Romances

To the 75th anniversary of the great Russian singer of our time Elena Obraztsova, Firma Melodiya presents the singer’s concert recorded on 29 July 1980 in Moscow. The programme comprised old Russian romances. The singer turned to this genre when she was at the peak of her acting and singing career after she shone in classical Russian and foreign repertoires on the world’s best opera stages for many years. Bril-liant Carmen and Azucena, Santuzza and Marina Mniszech, she was always a singer who deeply sen-sed and understood the Russian soul. From the height of her mastery and experience of the heroines she had sung and lived on stage – the bright, strong and tragic ones – Obraztsova creates exciting and memorable characters in the genre of romance as well. The audience did not want the singer to leave the stage for a long time. The crowd blocked the street expecting Obraztsova to walk out from the staff entrance and gave her a new, even more enthusiastic ovation. The concert has been shown many times on TV, and the recording sold many copies in a flash. Today that recording is again available for the singer’ numerous fans.

SCHUBERT / BEETHOVEN / SCHUMANN - Music for Flute

Franz Schubert’s only significant work for flute is an offshoot of his famous song-cycle Die schöne Müllerin, completed in November 1823. In January 1824 he took the melody of the 18th song, ‘Troc-kne Blumen’ (Faded Flowers) and made it the basis of his Introduction and Variations in E minor on ‘Trockne Blumen’ for flute and piano.Beethoven’s only mature and substantial contribution to the instrument’s repertoire is the Serenade, op.25 for flute, violin and viola, written in 1801.Schumann wrote no original pieces for flute. However, it is but a small leap for flautists to include the 3 Romanzen op.94 in their repertoire. They were written in 1849, for oboe, but with the composer’s indication that they were suitable for either clarinet or violin. The Romanzen are simply ‘Songs without Words’, and as such open to all instrumental colours equally.

METROPOLITAN ALFEYEV, HILARION - St Matthew Passion

Firma Melodiya presents a recording of St Matthew Passion (2006), one of the most popular works of Russian academic music of the 21st century composed by Metropolitan Hilarion. In due course, this work will probably take a special place in the history of domestic music, but it has already been a source of inspiration for The Conductor (2012), a motion picture by Pavel Lungin, and performed over fifty times around the world. The uniqueness of St Matthew Passion lies in the synthesis of musical traditions of West European baroque where the musical genre of passion sprang from, Orthodox church signing and Russian sym-phonic music of the 19th and 20th centuries. St Matthew Passion is intended for concert performance, but in the opinion of the musicologist and chancellor of the Moscow Conservatory Alexander Sokolov “this music leads a man to God through knowledge of God, to spiritual through soulful”.The featured recording was made in 2010 by the first performers of the Passion who are the Moscow Synodal Choir led by Alexei Puzakov and the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra conducted by Vladi-mir Fedoseyev with the participation of young vocalists and prize-winners of international competi-tions Naira Asatrian, Olessya Petrova, Maxim Paster and Dmitri Beloselsky.

The Complete Piano Music of Jean Roger-Ducasse

Jean Roger-Ducasse was born in Bordeaux on 18 April 1873. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire from 1892 and in 1895, along with Ravel, joined the composition class of Gabriel Fauré. In 1902 he won the second Grand Prix de Rome with his cantata Alcyone, with Ravel gaining fourth prize. His circle included Fauré, to whom he was a close friend, the famed pianist Marguerite Long, who performed his Six Preludes in 1912, and Debussy, who Roger-Ducasse joined for the premiere of En Blanc et Noir in 1916.Roger-Ducasse’s compositions include several songs, two string quartets, numerous orchestral and choral pieces, two stage works and a sizeable group of piano pieces. Contrary to the music of Ravel and Debussy Roger-Ducasse’s style is not impressionist but descends from Chopin and more closely aligns with Fauré. The piano music, composed 1906-1923, is typical of his musical language: complex and chromatic, but perfectly formed. It is now high-time to revisit the works of this unjustly forgotten talent.

The Chamber Music series written between 1975 and 2009 are fascinating character pieces full of pas-sion, and often written after the completion of larger opera projects. They contain dance-like elements, elements of humour and memorable melodies. They are also revealing Sallinen’s stylistic development in the last four decades. Chamber Music III (The Nocturnal Dances of Don Juanquixote) is among the most popular works by Sallinen and often described as a ‘cello concerto’ by various commentators.Chamber Music VI and VII receive their world premiere recordings, as well as Ralf Gothóni’s adaption of the Chamber Music V for piano and strings (originally for accordion and string orchestra).

Beethoven Piano Sonatas

This double-CD release is a second volume in pianist Paavali Jumppanen’s ongoing recording cycle of the Beethoven piano sonatas. This new release contains six piano sonatas: three early Op. 10 sonatas (published in 1798) and three sonatas written between 1804–06 (Opp. 53, 54 & 57). Piano Sonata Op. 53 Waldstein, completed after the 3rd Symphony, was described by Wilhelm von Lenz, an early biographer of Beethoven, as a “heroic symphony for piano.” Piano Sonata Op. 57 Appassionata is undoubtedly Beethoven’s darkest and most aggressive work. The Sonata has been compared to Dante’s Inferno and Shakespeare’s bloodthirsty Macbeth. Paavali Jumppanen is an internationally esteemed pianist, a versatile performer equally at home as a concerto soloist, chamber musician, and a recitalist. His vast repertoire spans piano literature from Bach to the Avant-garde. Jumppanen has spent several years performing the works of Viennese Clas-sics, in particular Beethoven.Jumppanen’s first instalment in the Beethoven cycle received thrilling reviews and, among others, the ‘Choc’ Award from the French music magazine Classica.

Many people go through life without having the faintest inkling of Messiaen’s mu-sic, but there is a before and after for all those who have tasted his extraordinary soundscapes. One is no longer the same person, and one wants to have more. It is like a Babette’s Feast of music, both exclusive and exotic, yet utterly spontaneous and embracing a universe of colors and rhythms, human, divine and even extra-terrestrial.Three of Messiaen’s most passionate vocal masterworks are presented on the current program, from the visionary Trois petites liturgies de la Présence divine (Three Small Liturgies of the Divine Presence) (1934), the popular O sacrum convivium! (1937) and the extraordinary – and extraordinarily difficult – Cinq Rechants (Five Refrains) (1948).The internationally renowned choir conductor Marcus Creed is joined for this all Messiaen program by the three of Denmark’s greatest musical treasures: The Danish National Concert Choir, Danish National Vocal Ensemble and The Danish National Chamber Orchestra, in addition to internationally acclaimed soloists Marianna Shirinyan (Piano) and Thomas Bloch (ondes Martenot). An essential disc featuring some of the most hypnotically beautiful and trans-cendent music of the last century.

WAGNER, RICHARD - Der Ring des Nibelungen

1953 was the third year of ‘New Bayreuth’, with the pattern each year of two cycles of the Ring, several performances of Parsifal, and two other dramas, one in a new production, being established. In 1953 the major crises was the absence of Hans Knappertsbusch, who in the first two years had already come to be the backbone of the musical side. So, rather late in the day, Wieland Wagner summoned to Bayreuth two conductors of the generation after Kna: Clemens Krauss to conduct Parsifal and the second cycle of the Ring, and Joseph Keilberth to conduct the first Ring cycle and the new production of Lohengrin. For the first time at Bayreuth Martha Mödl sings Brünnhilde, and she too is at her finest, that unmis-takeable voice full and warm. And this was also the first year that Wolfgang Windgassen sang Siegfried, a role he made his own for at least the next fifteen years. This cycle (and the later one under Clemens Krauss) established the major figures for the next five years, Hotter always as Wotan, Varnay and Mödl more or less alternating as Bru¨nnhilde, and Wind-gassen, with one exception, Siegfried, similarly Gustav Neidlinger as Alberich. No more satisfactory Ring cast has been assembled since, indeed none that can touch it, and this release is a fitting tribute to its lasting greatness.

KARG-ELERT, SIGFRID - Wagner Operas for Harmonium and Piano

The practice of adapting contemporary music of the late 19th and early 20th centuries was aimed at making well-known works playable for use at home. The piano and the harmonium, as instruments for domestic music-making, were of the utmost impor-tance. But for Karg-Elert, the harmonium, especially the Kunstharmonium, (art harmonium) was a concert instrument. Karg-Elert saw in the Kunstharmonium the perfect instrument for the realisation of his colourful, expressive and orchestral conceptions of music. He found it ideal for use in adapta-tions. And in this regard, Wagner occupied a prominent place as a composer adapted by Karg-Elert. He adapted 30 pieces from Wagner’s operas for the duo combination of harmonium and piano.Karg-Elert’s Wagner transcriptions deserve a position of importance, for his artistic standards go beyond pure adaptation and the orchestral aspect is uniquely shown to best advantage, especially in the harmonium-piano duo versions.

RODRIGO, JOAQUIN - Concierto de Aranjuez

Joaquín Rodrigo modelled Concierto de Aranjuez on Spanish folk music. It was such a big success that it is considered as one of his most important works. To continue such an achievement, Rodrigo composed Fantasía para un gentilhombre, where he created a musical monument, so to speak, with two Spanish “gentlemen of the guitar” Sanz and Segovia skilfully presenting the ancient melodies with a modern twist. And Rodrigo based his Concierto Madrigal for two guitars and orchestra on Jacques Arcadelt’s madri-gal “Oh, my happy eyes”. The composer neatly combines Renaissance dances with Spanish and Afri-can-American folklore in the 10 movements of the suite-like work. Now on SACD, we finally get to enjoy Rodrigo’s music with its astounding ability to bring about the feelings and visualisations of rural Spain and its romantic past in the way it was meant to be enjoyed.

SCRIABIN, ALEXANDER - Symphony No.1 & The Poem of Ecstasy

In 1899, Scriabin began writing his most ambitious composition to date: the First Symphony. The work still reflects the influence of the traditional fourmovement formal scheme. The First Symphony docu-ments a search for salvation and unification, both of which can only be found in art.Le Poème de l’extase debuted in New York on 10 December 1908, after a performance in Russia had to be cancelled due to the difficulty of the score. However, when the Russian première finally did take place, on 1 February 1909, it wound up being a true spectacle.Conductor Mikhail Pletnev surpasses the extreme with his Scriabin interpretation and draws what he needs from the Russian National Orchestra the Moscow-based ensemble he founded in 1990. This results in a near-perfect performance of both works. Blessed by the orchestra’s warm, vibrant playing, this CD is a real pleasure for everyone who adores the esoteric and unorthodox work of Scriabin. It is definitely THE Symphony No. 1 and Poem of Ecstasy to own: an ideal performance with sonic audio quality to match.

« My love-affair with historic recordings began long before I started to play violin. Recordings by jascha Heifetz, Ginette Neveau and Ida Haendel, which my family owned on vinyl and which I listened to obses-sively as a child, were precisely what made me decide to become a violinist. For me, there is something that is extra special in the vintage studio recordings, in particular those of jascha Heifetz’s: something so personal in that soft, dry, close-up sound! What I wanted to do is more or less go back in time to the days when the making of the records by the likes of jascha Heifetz and David Oistrach was rather different to what it is now. just like they did back then, I wanted to set up the microphones very close, to use almost no reverb at all, record as much as possible in full live takes, and - if possible, use vintage equipment.Having the microphones so close-up felt very unforgiving and recording numerous full live takes of the same pieces was tiring, but I must admit that the thing I particularly indulged in was using more por-tamento than it is usually done these days- because the repertoire I chose for the album and the way we recorded it actually encouraged it. And I think it makes for a more authentic experience, which is exactly what I wanted to recreate: a trip back in time. » Dunja Lavrova

Alma, svegilate ormai

On this CD the experienced Anonima Frottolisti Ensemble, a group specializing in early music and medieval, faces a very little performed yet very interesting repertoire: the “contra-facta”, compositions in which the lyrics and the melodies are mixed in a diverse blend of sacred and profane. Starting from the twelfth century, these two seemingly opposing worlds have different points of contact in the custom to use secular texts on sacred melodies. Later, however, the trend is the opposite: popular melodies in vogue at the time are filled with litur-gical and spiritual texts, thus becoming an effective mean to lead people to faith and to the knowledge of the scriptures.

BOSSI, MARCO ENRICO - Complete Organ Works, Vol.11

This eleventh volume of the complete organ works by Marco Enrico Bossi - organist and composer of international importance known throughout the world as extraordinary per-former - is including the latest original organ works of his production alongside the acro-batic technicality of the «Studio Sinfonico» and «Meditazione in una Cattedrale» from Tre Momenti Francescani. These are a kind of testament by the genius from Salò, whose writing reaches here its highest level of spirituality and inspiration highlighted by the historical instruments selected by Ma-cinanti for this CD, in particular, by the colossal Balbiani organ of the Como cathedral, deli-vering a huge sound and very light colors of great poetry.

Paraphrases of Giuseppe Verdi for Flute and Piano

Within the current Giuseppe Verdi’s birth bicentenary, Tactus is offering a wide range of proposals relating to the huge production of collateral works inspired by his great music, highlighting in this way the presence of the great Italian composer in varied repertoires with regards to their musical forms, the timings and the geography. These operations have led to an enrichment of our already vast and branched-out knowledge, not of the musician himself, but rather of his impact and extreme popularity, from the period in which he was alive to the present time. This CD belongs to this type of operation, and gives the listener the opportunity - until now a rather rare one - to hear Verdi’s music through the filter of an entirely instrumental, chambermusic elaboration for flute and piano. It hinges on flutist-composers who were active during Verdi’s time, with an opening to contemporary music through a solo flute piece by the Italian composer Paolo Furlani.Arcadio Baracchi and Andrea Trovato are easily dealing with the lyricism and virtuosity that typically peppered these fantasies and paraphrases, where the skill of the performers was cleverly brought to light through songs that could be considered real “hits” of their time.

TANSMAN, ALEXANDRE - Piano Music, Volume One

Alexandre Tansman (1897–1986) was one of the most prolific composers of the twentieth century. His fundamental style is a Stravinskyan Neo-Classicism, animated by the dance-rhythms of his native Poland and energised by a masterly command of counterpoint. The substantial body of music he produced for his own instrument, the piano, has never been systematically examined in recordings; this first installment presents works he wrote soon after his arrival in Paris in 1919, the city that was to remain his home.

EIGES, KONSTANTIN - Piano Music

Konstantin Romanovich Eiges (1875–1950) was a member of the ‘Silver Age’ of Russian music, a contemporary and friend of Rachmaninov, Medtner and other major composer-pianists. He was a member of a gifted Jewish family from eastern Ukraine, studied both in medicine and music in Moscow. Eiges’ music bears the impress of Taneyev, his teacher, and of Skryabin and has points in common with his friends Medtner and Rachmaninov, but de-serves to be remembered in its own right. This is the first-ever CD dedicated to the music of this unjustly forgotten figure.

JENSEN, ADOLF - Piano Music, Volume One

Adolf Jensen (1837–79) is one of the major figures of German Romanticism, the composer of a large corpus of songs and piano music. Jensen’s musical language fuses the heritage of Schumann, Chopin and Liszt into an individual style distinguished by its melodic and lyrical appeal, and yet he has been almost entirely forgotten. This first in a series of recordings of his music hopes to restore his name to circulation.

ALKAN, CHARLES-VALENTIN - The Complete Transcriptions Vol. 1

Although the gloriously maverick original music of Charles-Valentin Alkan (1813–88) is now beginning to be become familiar, his equally idiosyncratic transcriptions have not yet been systematically documented in recordings. Alkan published a series of three albums of transcriptions, which have never been recorded in their entirety before; this release is the first in a pioneering project to do just that. The com-poser whose music Alkan transcribed more than anyone was Mozart, and this CD presents the complete Mozart/Alkan transcriptions.

SIR BIRTWISTLE, HARRISON - Songs 1970-2006

Among the events celebrating Sir Harrison Birtwistle’s 80th birthday last year were two concerts in Hannover, attended by the composer, which concentrated on his songs, the highlights of which feature on this release. Birtwistle’s ‘songs’ blur the boundaries between vocal and instrumental techniques; on occasion, indeed, they involve instruments only. The songs are a relatively neglected part of Birtwistle’s output: this CD contains the first recor-ding of the Canteus Iambeus, the first recording of the Lullaby for solo voices and the only recording currently available of the Songs by Myself. This CD also features a recording of Sir Harrison talking about his songs in interview.

O’BRIEN, CHARLES - Complete Orchestral Music, Vol.1

The rediscovery of the music of the Edinburgh composer Charles O’Brien (1882–1968) conti-nues with his most important work, his only symphony, a full-scale Romantic score in the tradition of Schumann and Brahms, powerful and lyrical by turn. It is coupled here with the later, more extended of the two versions O’Brien made of his heartening, Walter Scott-inspired overture Ellangowan, resplendent with a big Scottish tune which lingers in the memory.

London-born William Yeates Hurlstone was only 30 when he died, in May 1906, and yet the music he was able to compose during his short life shows remarkable accomplishment. BUSCH, ADOLF - Chamber Music, Volume 2

Adolf Busch (1891–1952) enjoys a reputation as one of the greatest of all violinists: his recor-dings of Beethoven with the Busch Quartet have never been surpassed. By contrast, Busch as a creative figure is almost unknown, but he was also one of the major composers of his day, equally natural as contrapuntist and melodist, with a style that owed much to his boyhood idol, Max Reger. This CD of his lyrical writing for clarinet, the second in a series of recordings of Busch’s light-filled chamber music, is part of the rediscovery of one of the leading musicians of his day.

TARTINI, GIUSEPPE - 30 Sonate piccole for Solo Violin

In the last years of his life, the great composer, violinist and swordsman Giuseppe Tartini (1692–1770) laboured at a cycle of sonatas for solo violin. Tartini is remembered by the gene-ral public only for his ‘Devil’s Trill’ Sonata but he is a far more important composer than that work would suggest: taken together, these sonatas form the most important composition for solo violin after Bach. At six hours in duration, it is the largest integrated work for the instrument. The music is surprisingly lyrical, and frequently has echoes of folk-music from Tartini’s Istrian homeland. This complete recording is based on a fresh study of the source and includes a number of works in Tartini’s shorthand, overlooked in earlier editions, and deciphered by the solo violi-nist Peter Sheppard Skærved for the first time.

It continues with the witty George Washington Variations and the first recording of a brief Prelude written for the Swiss patron of music, Werner Reinhart. It concludes with Krenek’s completed version of Schubert’s unfinished Piano Sonata in C major, D840.

In a church in a quiet northern Italian town survives a hidden jewel: an organ dating from 1749 which is perfect for Bach’s music. In this recording, renowned Italian organist Luca Guglielmi presents a fine sequence of some of Bach’s finest keyboard works, played on the historic organ in the Chiesa di San Nicolao, Alice Castello. The programme is compiled from works by Bach collected by two eighteenth century scholars, Padre Martini and Friedrich Wilhelm Rust, which would su-rely have been performed in the famous Abbey of Montecassino, a magnet for musical travellers on ‘The Grand Tour’. Martini and Rust played a major role in the creation of the first collected edition of Bach’s works. Guglielmi’s neatly-structured programme includes the brilliant Fantasia Chromatica, the solemn Fuga sopra il Magnificat, the fine Fantasia pro Organo in C minor and the great Fantasia & Fuga pro Organo, as well as Preludes and Fantasias, Duetti from the Clavierübung and seven Chorales for the Catechism, all demonstrating the vivid colours of this remarkable instrument.Extensive presentation includes 44 page booklet with notes in four languages (English, Italian, French & German), illustrations and session photographs, as well as comprehensive details of this unique eighteenth century organ.

HARRISON, SADIE - Solos and Duos for Strings and Piano

The Australian-British Sadie Harrison is no ordinary composer: she is also an archaeologist and a professional gardener. So it is hardly surprising that a fascination with historical arte-facts and biological processes filters into her music. The instrumental miniatures on this recording are both slow and brutal, some of them mir-roring ancient worlds and natural phenomena and others taking their starting point in the paintings of Brian Graham and Peter Sheppard Skærved, expressing visual and textural ideas in sound.

Virtuosity

Virtuosity searches for the musical souls of the most gifted young pia-nists as they try to make a name for themselves at the 2013 Van Cli-burn International Piano Competiton. The film focusses on this group of young musicians as they articulate their personalities through theirmusic: brilliant, eccentric, tender, touching, dazzling, deadly serious, wildly entertaining. At the heart of this film is the courage it takes for a 20-year-old to go onstage alone before 2,000 people, and hundreds of thousands more online, and play a unique interpretation of one of the most difficultpieces ever written for the piano. The Competition requires not only a transcendent musical ability, but a mental toughness that must sustain the soloist through three straight weeks of performance. The Cliburn becomes as much a test ofcharacter as a musical proving ground. All of the onstage brilliance and backstage drama takes place in the year in which the inspiration and namesake of the competition, Van Cliburn, passed away - this film is a tribute to his memory, and to hisparticular genius

MOZART, WOLFGANG AMADEUS - Don Giovanni

The first D minor chords thunder ominously from the orchestra pit, while on the stage, the entrance hall of an elegant hotel appears, sym-bolic of a place of non-committal encounters. Luxury seeps from eve-ry pore of the stairs, galleries and mysterious doors - the perfect place for Don Giovanni’s exercises in seduction.Director Sven-Eric Bechtolf pulls off a brilliant coup with the high aesthetics of his intrigue, a masterful parody of the “everything is pos-sible” of our time - flanked by an ensemble of exquisite vocal talents. Ildebrando D’Arcangelo, testosterone-charged Latin lover, amounts “with his splendid timbre and his stunningly virile magnetism to what must be an ideal realization of Don Giovanni” (Neue Zürcher Zeitung). With his finely balanced voice, Luca Pisaroni as an intellectually bes-pectacled Leporello. “The powerful bass of Commendatore Tomasz Konieczny is a true sensation” (Frankfurter Rundschau). The female roles are all realized with elegantly lean voices: Anett Fritsch highly dramatic as Elvira, the Donna Anna of Lenneke Ruitens supple in her vocal line and Valentina Naforniţa “a wonderful Zerlina who radiates strong vocal sensuality” (Opernnetz). Special feature: Full length realtime BEHIND THE SCENES.
