Imagine a patient walks into your facility with complaints of a persistent fever and chills, a cough, vomiting and diarrhea. Despite treatment with a cough medication, this patient has experienced these symptoms for several days, without any relief, after having been told initially that the symptoms would go away. As the nurse or provider who encounters this patient, what thoughts initially go through your mind? Is this just a common infection - or could this be something more serious? Should this patient be placed under isolation? What protective equipment must you prepare to use in the care of this patient?

Those responsible for patient care and treatment need to know which interview questions and assessment techniques will provide pertinent information. You are further challenged to remain up to date on the evolving diagnostic, treatment, reporting and safety guidelines. Rachel Cartwright-Vanzant, MS, RN, CNS, LHRM, LNCC, will summarize the latest infectious disease guidelines and evidence to make sure you confidently deliver the very best in patient care!

Rachel Cartwright-Vanzant, MS, RN, CNS, LHRM, LNCC, has over 32 years of clinical, management and consulting experience. Rachel’s nursing experience includes work in critical care, renal transplant, dialysis and surgical areas. Across these various settings, she has accumulated a wealth of knowledge as it pertains to infectious disease management and prevention. Rachel is also a legal nurse consultant, working with attorneys, law firms and healthcare organizations reviewing and evaluating medical records for compliance with standards of care and regulations posed by accreditation agencies, including The Joint Commission. She is committed to nursing excellence, and has published as a textbook author and through peer reviewed journals.
