Introduction SSCI’s Aristocrat laminated cages are attractive, efficient, andeconomical alternatives to stainless steel cages. Aristocratcages are made of specially-designed, water-resistant materialand are interior-lined with high-pressure plastic laminate toform a superior moisture barrier. The stainless steel, electro-polished cage doors are welded at every intersection, and fitclosely to the cage to protect the animals and minimize fluidleakage. The sturdy hinges can be mounted to either side of thecage for your convenience.

Aristocrat cages are available in a wide variety of sizes, withsingle or double-doors, and can be grouped into any of dozensof different arrangements to suit your facility’s needs.Arrangements can easily be added to or reconfigured at anytime. An extensive range of accessories, including restingshelves, corner cages, laminated toe-kick bases, stainless steelstationary and mobile bases, and many others, can be selectedto tailor your cages to your exact requirements. SSCI providesexpert design services to custom-fit your cages to your facility.

Aristocrat CageModels

There are two versions of the Aristocrat cage and both areavailable with single or double-doors. On single-door cages,the self-latching locking mechanism can accommodate apadlock for enhanced security. All cage bodies measure 28.25in. (71.75 cm) front to back. Overall, the cages measure 30.188in. (76.68 cm) deep including latch. The versions are:

Notice that the part numbers for SSCI laminated items arefollowed by a hyphen and four digits. These four digits are thecolor code of the laminate selected by the customer. Refer toyour current SSCI product catalog for further information.

Standard Aristocrat cages (Figure 1) have a door in front and asolid wall in back. Refer to Table 1 for dimensions and partnumbers.

Full-view back Aristocrat cages (Figure 2) have the standard doorin front, but have a clear, polycarbonate back panel. This allowsthe animals to be seen from either side of the cage and is ideal formedical observation, or for facilities where animals are on view tothe public. Refer to Table 2 for dimensions and part numbers.

Double-door cages are designed for easy use and enhancedanimal comfort. Larger animals can be easily placed insidewithout having to maneuver around a center post. An optionalstainless steel divider panel splits the cage into two smallercompartments, and can be quickly installed or removed asneeded. Both standard and full-view back Aristocrat cages areavailable in double-door models. Double-doors are onlyavailable on 48 in., 60 in., or 72 in. wide cages.

CAUTION: When the cage is mounted on a mobilebase, the wheel brakes should be engaged any timethe assembly is not actually being moved.Be especially careful when the unit is not on a levelsurface and may be free to roll uncontrolled.

Care and Cleaning ofStainless Steel

Sanitizers

Aristocrat cage doors are made of electro-polished, weldedstainless steel. Stainless steel is steel alloyed with chromium tomake it highly resistant to stain, rust, and corrosion.Note: This does NOT mean, however, that stainless steel willnever rust or corrode. Science has not yet developed a steelwhich is completely stainless or corrosion PROOF.

The type of stainless steel and finish selected by SSCI forAristocrat cage doors is the best available for the intended use.

The basic rule of thumb is to use the mildest cleaning agentthat will do the job effectively. After cleaning, always rinsethoroughly with clear water, and dry completely. Frequentcleaning will prolong the service life of stainless steel equipment,and will help maintain a bright, pleasing appearance.

Ordinary deposits of waste and fluids can usually be removedwith soap and water. More stubborn deposits or tightlyadhering debris may require harder scrubbing and possibly theuse of commercial cleaning products acceptable for use onmetal surfaces. When using any cleaning agent, rub in thedirection of the polish lines or “grain” of the metal. For highluster finishes, clean soft cloths or pads should be used.

If especially rough cleaning is necessary, use “stainless steel”wool, nylon, or plastic scrubbers. Test these scrubbers in aninconspicuous area first to be sure they do not mar or scratchthe stainless steel finish.

Minor scale build-up and some hard water spotting may beremoved by washing with vinegar, followed by a neutralizingrinse with clear water, and a thorough drying with a soft cloth.For heavy deposits of scale, 5% oxalic acid (use warm), 5-15%sulfamic acid, or 5-10% phosphoric acid may be used. Alwaysfollow with a neutralizing rinse of clean water and a thoroughdrying.

The large selection of brands and combinations of chemicalsavailable for deodorizing, disinfecting, and sanitizing isstaggering. Select one or more agents for use in your facilityonly after weighing all the benefits claimed by each product.Too often this choice is made without adequate considerationof the effects these agents may produce on equipment orfurnishings.



CAUTION: Before selecting a chemical to employ inyour facility, review label statements regarding usewith metals (stainless steel). Always consult thechemical supplier if there are any doubts.

Avoid prolonged use of chlorides (such as chlorine bleach),bromides, iodides, and thiocyanates on stainless steel surfacesas these chemicals will cause pitting, corrosion, and metaldiscoloration. Allowing salty solutions to evaporate and dry onstainless steel may also contribute to corrosive conditions.

In summary, select chemical deodorizers, disinfectants, and/orsanitizers only after weighing all possible benefits and knownadverse effects.

CAUTION: The warranty for this product is void if thecare and cleaning instructions provided in thismanual are not followed.

Clean the Aristocrat cage exactly in accordance with thecleaning instructions provided in Chapter 3 of this manual.

Failure to follow these cleaning instructions canvoid your warranty.

Overview This chapter guides you in mounting SSCI Aristocrat laminatedcages on a suitable base and joining several cages together toform a multi-cage arrangement. If you have problems or requireadditional assistance, please feel free to call SSCI CustomerService at (800) 323-7366.

The space required for your particular arrangement depends on theshape of the arrangement: straight, L-shaped, or U-shaped.For minimum space requirements, refer to:

In a straight cage arrangement, the cages are set up in a singlestraight line. The arrangement can consist of one or more tiers.Figure 3 shows the minimum space required for a straightarrangement. Note that the required depth includes the width ofthe widest cage door in the arrangement. This allows all doorsto open fully giving you sufficient space in front of the arrange-ment to handle patients safely and conveniently. If the shipping containers appear damaged in any way, contactthe shipping company immediately. Save all damaged packingmaterials to assist in proving liability for damage.

Carefully inspect all items while you unpack them. If anydamage is noted, or if parts appear to be missing, call SSCICustomer Service at (800) 323-7366.

Unpack all cartons and packages to determine if all cages,bases, etc. have been received. Items appearing on your SalesAgreement, but not on your green Packing List, are back-ordered and will be shipped as soon as they become available.

SSCI Stainless SteelStationary Base

If an SSCI stainless steel stationary base (Figure 6) is to be used,assemble and level the base according to the Owner’s Manualprovided with the base. The stationary base comes completewith a kit to adapt it for use with your Aristocrat Cages, andthis kit should be installed now. The stationary base adds about6.75 in. (17.15 cm) to the height of your arrangement although thisdimension will vary somewhat depending on the final positions ofthe leveler legs. Part numbers of the bases (including the adapterkits) are shown in Table 4.

SSCI Stainless SteelMobile Base

If an SSCI stainless steel mobile base (Figure 7) is to be used,assemble the base according to the Owner’s Manual providedwith the base. Mobile bases are identical to stationary bases butwith the addition of four or six casters, depending on thearrangement width (Table 4). The casters are mounted on thebase in place of the leveler legs and come either with or withoutbrakes. Use casters with brakes on the front of the arrangement,and casters without brakes on the rear. Mobile bases do notrequire leveling. The mobile base adds about 6.75 in. (17.15cm) to the height of your arrangement. Caster part numbers areshown in Table 5.

Note: Casters are not recommended for L-shaped or U-shapedcage arrangements.

A site-built concrete base must be at least 3.5 in. (8.9 cm) highand 29 in. (73.66 cm) from front to rear (Figure 9). The top,front and sides should have smoothly trowelled surfaces, withsharp edges and square corners. The top surface must be levelfront-to-rear and left-to-right.

SSCI cabinetry bases (Figure 8) come in a wide variety ofstyles; refer to your SSCI product catalog for details. Unpackyour cabinetry base. No further assembly is required to prepareit for installation of the Aristocrat cages.

A site-built wood frame base must be built of 2 x 4 lumber, seton edge, and at least 29 in. (73.66 cm) from front to rear(Figure 10). The front and rear supports should span the widthof the cage arrangement and be parallel to each other. The rearsupport should be two 2 x 4s nailed together; the front supportshould be one 2 x 4. There should be 2 x 4 crossmembers ateach end, with intermittent 2 x 4 crossmembers spaced on nomore than 4 ft (1.22 m) centers. The top must be level front-to-rear and left-to-right.

An “arrangement” is any cage layout with more than one cage(Figure 11). In a multi-tier cage arrangement, the tiers arenumbered from the bottom up. The bottom tier is “Tier 1”, thenext tier up is “Tier 2”, and so forth.

All cages in one tier must be the same height.All tiers in the arrangement must be the same width.

Cage Arrangements

You can join banks of cages at right-angles to each other byusing a corner cage. Refer to Corner Cages on Page 19 fordetails.

There are four basic cage layouts (Figure 12):A - Single cageB - Two or more cages stacked verticallyC - Two or more cages in one tierD - Three or more cages, side by side, AND in two or

StandardCorner Cages

Standard corner cages have a door in front and a solid wall inback. These corner cages allow you to create L- or U-shapedarrangements by placing straight banks of cages on either sideof one or two corner cages. Refer to Table 6 for standard cornercage part numbers.

Full-view BackCorner Cages

A corner cage is used between two straight banks of cages toform a right-angle. There are two types of corner cages:

for standard Aristocrat Cages (Figure 13)for full-view back, Aristocrat Cages (Figure 14)

In any arrangement, the cage above or below a corner cagemust be another corner cage.

Corner Cages

Full-view back cages feature a door in front and a clear panel inback panel to allow animals to be viewed from either side ofthe cage. These cages allow you to create L- or U-shapedarrangements by placing straight banks of cages on either sideof one or two corner cages. Refer to Table 7 for full-view back,corner cage part numbers.

Cage ArrangementNote: While you are building the arrangement, consult thearrangement drawings frequently to make sure you place eachcage in the correct position.

Straight Arrangement: When installing a straight cagearrangement, start with an end cage on Tier 1 (bottom tier).If one end of the arrangement is against a wall, start with thatend, then work outward, cage-by-cage toward the other end.Complete each tier before starting the next tier. Assemble eachnew tier in the same sequence as Tier 1.

L-shaped Arrangement: When installing an L-shaped cagearrangement, start with the corner cage, then work outward,cage-by-cage toward both ends. Complete each tier beforestarting the next tier. Assemble each new tier in the samesequence as Tier 1.

U-shaped Arrangement: When installing a U-shaped cagearrangement, start with either corner cage and work toward theother corner to complete the center leg first. Then go to thecorner cages and work outward, cage-by-cage toward bothends. Complete each tier before starting the next tier. Assembleeach new tier in the same sequence as Tier 1.



CAUTION: The cages are heavy and we recommendthat setting up the arrangement be done by at leasttwo people.

CAUTION: If the arrangement is being installed on amobile base, make sure that assembly is done on aflat, unsloped surface, and that all the caster brakesare ON.

Note: Refer to Installation Sequence on Page 21.

1. If non-standard, customer-installed resting shelves areto be used, install them now, before you begin assemblyof the arrangement. Refer to Installing Resting Shelveson Page 25. Note: Installation of the resting shelvesat a later time will require extensive disassembly of thecage arrangement.

Note: On SSCI stainless steel stationary and mobile bases, thecages are held to the wooden adapter kit on the base withdouble-face tape as shown in the base Owner’s Manual. On allother bases, the cages merely rest atop the base - no fastenersare required.

2. Select a cage and place that cage on the base. Start witha corner cage if the arrangement is L-shaped or U-shaped.

3. Select a second cage, and place that cage next to the first.

4. Open the doors on both cages.

Note: Each pair of cages is held together atfive points (Figure 16). At each point, a 1-3/16 in.internally-threaded Phillips head stud, and a1/2 in. Phillips head cap screw (Figure 17) areused to tie the cages together.

5. Connect the cages together at all fivepoints with the studs and cap screwssupplied.

6. Repeat Steps 2 through 5 for eachremaining cage in the tier.

7. When Tier 1 is complete, place a cage ontop the first cage in Tier 1.

Note: Higher level cages are held to lowerlevel cages with several 1 in. Phillips head woodscrews (Figure 18). The number of screws ineach cage varies with the width of the cage.

8. With the screws provided, screw theTier 1 cage to the higher cage throughthe holes in the ceiling of the Tier 1 cage(Figure 19).

9. Repeat Steps 7 and 8 for each remainingcage in the tier.

10. If there are additional tiers in the arrange-ment, repeat Steps 2 through 9 for eachtier until the arrangement is complete.

11. If end panels are to be installed, do so atthis time (refer to Adding End Panels tothe Arrangement on Page 27).

12. If top panels are to be installed, do so atthis time (refer to Adding Top Panels tothe Arrangement on Page 30).

13. All single-door cages are shipped with the doors hingedon the left and latched on the right. If it is preferred thatany or all of the doors open the other way, reverse thedoor hinges now (refer to Reversing the Door Hingeson Page 32).

14. If divider panels are to be installed in double-doorcages, do so at this time (refer to Installing DividerPanels on Page 34).

15. If stainless steel or PVC-coated removable floors are tobe used in the cages, install them now.

16. If full-view back cages are present in the arrangement,peel the protective paper from the clear, polycarbonateback panels.

Aristocrat cages can be ordered with factory-installed restingshelves to make room for multiple animals, or simply to makecats more comfortable by allowing them to climb and resthigher than the floor. The shelves are mounted on the back wallof the cage and span the full width of the cage. They arepositioned approximately midway between the cage floor andceiling. When the resting shelf is ordered, the -00- in the cagepart number is changed to one of the following, depending onthe height of the cage:

18 in. high cage - BF24 in. high cage - BR30 in. high cage - CD36 in. high cage - CP

If a shelf position different from that described above isrequired, the shelves must be ordered separately and installedon-site by the customer before assembling the arrangement.Resting shelf part numbers are shown in Table 8.Note: Installation of the resting shelves at a later time willrequire extensive disassembly of the cage arrangement.

Procedure For the on-site installation of non-standard resting shelves,follow the procedure below. Note: Installation of the restingshelves at a later time will require extensive disassembly of thecage arrangement.

1. Measure down the desired distance (Figure 20) fromthe top of the cage, and place a mark at that point on thecage rear.

2. Using a carpenter’s level, draw a horizontal linethrough the mark and across the full width of the cage.

3. Still using the level, draw a horizontalline on each side of the cage, continuingon from the line you drew on the rear ofthe cage.

Note: You will drill two mounting screw holesin each side of the cage, and three or more holes(depending on shelf width) in the cage rear(Figure 20).

4. Hold the shelf up to the horizontal linesyou marked on the cage and mark thecenter positions of the mounting holeson the line.

5. With a hammer and center-punch, puncha small pilot hole in each mounting hole.

6. Drill and countersink a 1/16 in. dia. hole into eachmounting position. Make sure the drill goes straight inand not at an angle.

7. Open the cage door.

Note: It will take two people to mount the resting shelf: one tohold the shelf in position inside the cage, and another to installthe mounting screws behind the cage.

8. With one person holding the shelf in position in thecage, secure the shelf to the cage wall with the woodscrews supplied.

Adding End Panelsto the Arrangement

Laminated end panels can be installed to give your arrangement aclean, finished look, and to coordinate the colors in your facility.End panels can be installed on one or both ends of thearrangement depending on your needs. One panel is used foreach end of each tier. There are no right and left panels; allpanels will work on either end of the tier.

Note: Install all end panels before installing top panels.

On your arrangement, you may elect to use end panels eitherwith or without top panels. Figure 21 shows the two types ofend panels:

End panels for use under top panels are taller than other endpanels to compensate for the .625 in. thickness of the top panel(Figure 21). The distance between the top of the panel and theupper mounting holes is also greater. When installing endpanels, make sure you mount the correct panel to each tier.

End panels are installed using the same kind of hardware usedin connecting the Aristocrat cages together: 1-3/16 in.internally-threaded, Phillips head studs, and 1/2 in. Phillipshead cap screws (Figure 17). Each end panel is attached to thearrangement at five points.

CAUTION: The end panels are heavy and werecommend that mounting the panels be done by atleast two people. Also, it can be very difficult for oneperson to reach the rear studs and cap screws at thesame time. This is especially true when working on thesame side of the cage to which a door is mounted.

Important: Always install the end panels to the bottom tierfirst, then work upward from there.

1. Open the door of the end cage to which the end panel is tobe attached.

2. From inside the cage, place an internally-threaded studthrough the upper front mounting hole (Figure 22).

3. Select the correct end panel for the tier on which youare working, and make sure it is rightside-up.

4. With the three holes toward the front of thearrangement, place the upper front mounting hole overthe stud installed in Step 2.

5. Screw a cap screw through the panel and into this stud.Leave it a little loose for now.

6. From inside the cage, insert another stud into the upperrear mounting hole and the end panel, and secure it witha cap screw as you did in Step 5.

7. Insert studs and cap screws into the remaining threemounting holes.

8. With two Phillips screwdrivers, tighten all five studsand cap screws.

9. Repeat Steps 1 through 8 for the next higher tier untilthe arrangement is complete.

1. When all cages are in place and the end panels areinstalled, place all the top panels in position andcarefully align them with each other, the end panels,and the cages.

Note: Top panels are held to top level cages with the same1 in. Phillips head wood screws as the cages in adjacent tiers(Figure 20). The number of screws in each cage varies with thewidth of the cage.

2. With the screws provided (Figure 18), screw the top tiercages to the top panels through the holes in the ceilingof the cages (Figure 19).



Reversing the DoorHinges (Single-doorCages Only)

Single-door Aristocrat cages come from the factory with thedoor hinged on the left and latched on the right. The doors areambidextrous, however, and can be easily reversed to open theother way if desired. To reverse the hinges, follow theprocedure below.

2. With a Phillips screwdriver, remove thetwo screws that hold the lower latchconnector bracket to the cage (Figure 24).

3. Remove the two screws that hold theupper latch connector bracket to thecage, and remove the complete latchconnector and bracket assembly.

Note: Each door hinge consists of four parts(Figure 25): a curved outer plate, a flat innerplate, and two screws.

Note: Removing and installing the door willbe easier if a second person supports the doorwhile you work on the hinges.

4. With a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew thetwo screws on the lower door hinge, andremove both hinge plates (Figure 26).

5. With a second person supporting the door,unscrew the two screws on the upper doorhinge, and remove both hinge plates, andthe door.

6. Reverse the door so that the latch armsproject outward when the door ismounted on the opposite side.

7. Again with the door supported by asecond person, mount the two upperhinge plates, and the door, to the holesfrom which the upper latch connectorbrackets were removed (Figure 24).

8. Finish hanging the door by engaging thedoor in the lower hinge plates andmounting them to the cage.Note: When the door is mounted, theupper hinge should be just above the tophorizontal door rod, and the lower hingeshould be just below the bottomhorizontal door rod (Figure 26).

9. Invert the latch connector assembly, andmount the latch connector brackets in thepositions formerly occupied by the doorhinges (Figure 28).

Note: The latch connector is now upside-downand must be inverted to work properly.

10. With a Phillips screwdriver and a7/16 in. wrench, remove the two screwsthat hold the latch connector to the latchconnector brackets (Figure 28), andremove the latch connector.

11. Invert the latch connector.

12. Remount the latch connector to thelatch connector brackets oriented asshown in Figure 29. Leave the screws/nuts slightly loose so that the latchconnector is free to move up and downto latch and unlatch properly.

13. Open, close, and latch the door severaltimes to make sure it moves and lockseasily. If not, review your work andmake any necessary corrections. Ifnecessary, refer to Door and LatchAdjustment on Page 63.

Installing DividerPanels (Double-doorCages Only)

On double-door cages, a stainless steel divider panel can be usedto divide the cage into two smaller compartments. The panel canbe installed or removed quickly and easily as required. Dividerpanel part numbers are shown in Table 11.

Overview

Installation 1. Open both cage doors.

2. Locate the edge of the divider panel that has theretainer brackets on top and bottom (Figure 30). Thisis the front edge of the panel.

3. Slide the rear edge of the divider panel intothe cage and into the divider channel at therear of the cage (Figure 31).

4. Pass the round end of the retaining rod(Figure 32) up through the center hole inupper latch plate (Figure 31), then fit theflat end of the rod down into the centerhole in the lower latch plate.

Chapter 3 - Use and Care



When mounted on an mobile base, a cage arrangement can bemoved from place to place as needed. To move the mobile baseand cage assembly, release the wheel brakes, push or pull theassembly to its new location, and then engage the brakes again.

CAUTION: The wheel brakes should be engaged anytime the base is not actually being moved.Be especially careful when the base not on a levelsurface and may be free to roll uncontrolled.

Brakes are mounted on the front casters on SSCI mobile bases.The words ON and OFF are stamped onto the ends of thebrake lever (Figure 36). To engage the wheel brake, step downon the end of the brake lever marked ON. To release the brake,step down on the end marked OFF.

CAUTION: The wheel brakes should be engaged anytime the base is not actually being moved.Be especially careful when the base is not on a levelsurface and may be free to roll uncontrolled.

On single-door cages, provision is made to allow you to securethe cage with a padlock. A hole in the latch connector (Figure 35)accepts a padlock with a hasp of 1/4 in. (6.35 mm) diameter orless. If the latch and/or door are not properly adjusted, you may havedifficulty in opening the door, and it may not lock automaticallywhen closed. To adjust the door and/or latch, refer to Door andLatch Adjustment on Page 63.

All single-door Aristocrat cages come from the factory hinged onthe left and latched on the right. The doors are ambidextrous,however, and can be easily reversed to open the other way, ifdesired. To reverse the hinges, refer to Reversing the DoorHinges on Page 32.

An optional stainless steel divider panel can be installed into adouble-door cage to convert the cage into two smallercompartments. The panel can be installed and removed easilyand quickly. The panel is held in place at the rear by a full-height divider channel, and at the front by a retaining rod thatfits into the upper and lower latch plates.

Introduction

Cleaning YourAristocrat Cage

Although there are no recommended cleaning intervals, youwill no doubt want to clean your Aristocrat cages frequently.Maintaining high standards of sanitation will be an importantpriority for your facility.

CAUTION: The warranty for this product is void if thecare and cleaning instructions provided in thismanual are not followed.

Whenever necessary, rinse the cage door with clear water anddry thoroughly with clean, soft cloths. Refer to Care andCleaning of Stainless Steel on Page 7 for more detailed infor-mation.

Ordinary deposits of waste and fluids can usually be removedwith soap and water. Stubborn deposits may require scrubbingwith “stainless steel” wool, nylon, or plastic scrubbers and/orthe use of commercial cleaning products. Always scrub in thedirection of the “grain” of the metal. Rinse with clear waterand dry thoroughly with clean, soft cloths.

Minor scale build-up and some hard water spotting may beremoved by washing with vinegar, followed by a neutralizingrinse of clear water, and a thorough drying with clean, softcloths.

If especially rough cleaning is necessary, use “stainless steel”wool, nylon or plastic scrubbers. Test these scrubbers in aninconspicuous area first to be sure they do not mar or scratchthe stainless steel finish.

For heavy deposits of scale, 5% oxalic acid (use warm), 5-15%sulfamic acid, or 5-10% phosphoric acid may be used. Asalways, rinse with clear water and dry thoroughly with cleansoft cloths.

Avoid prolonged use of chlorides (such as chlorine bleach),bromides, iodides, and thiocyanates. Never allow salty solu-tions to dry on the stainless steel.



Cleaning LaminatedSurfaces

Cleaning TipsTo clean the laminated surface, use a damp cloth or sponge anda mild soap or detergent. Difficult stains such as coffee or teacan be removed using a mild household cleaner and bakingsoda, mixed to a paste-like consistency. Using a stiff nylonbristle brush, scrub (approx.15 to 20 strokes) the affected area.Do not scrub so hard as to mar the surface finish.

Stubborn stains that resist the above cleaning method mayrequire the use of undiluted household bleach or nail polishremover. Using a cotton ball saturated with bleach or nailpolish remover (acetone), gently rub the stain for up to twominutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and wipe dryusing a soft cloth. This step may be repeated if the stainappears to be going away, and the color of the laminate has notbeen affected.

CAUTION: Prolonged exposure of the laminatesurface to bleach will cause discoloration. Alwaysrinse laminate surfaces after cleaning! Failure torinse after cleaning can cause damage even if only asmall amount of cleaning solution remains on thesurface. A dry residue may be invisible, however,moisture from cups or drinks can reactivate it, andresult in permanently etched scars or stains over time.

Substances to AvoidAcidic or abrasive cleaners can damage laminate surfaces -do not use them. Drain cleaners containing lye willpermanently damage the laminate surface. If you spill or splasha drain cleaner on the laminate, wipe it up immediately andrinse several times with water.

Hair, textile, and food dyes can cause permanent stains. If dyeshould happen to spill or splash on the laminate, wipe it upimmediately with dishwashing detergent or an all-purpose cleaner.Wipe spills away promptly and rinse several times with water.

Rust removers contain harsh chemicals which will quicklycause permanent damage. If a spill or splash occurs, wipe offall residue immediately, wash thoroughly with soapy water, andrinse several times.



Steel wool and other abrasive pads will damage the laminatesurface. Do not use them for cleaning, and do not leave steelwool pads on the laminate; the metal can rust and leave stains.

Toilet bowl cleaners contain harsh chemicals that can causepermanent damage. If spills or splashes occur, wipe upimmediately, wash the surface with soapy water and rinseseveral times.

Sharp ObjectsSharp objects can damage the laminate surface, marring itsbeauty, and lowering wear and stain resistance. Although highpressure laminates are somewhat resistant to scratching andmarring, the surface can be damaged even under normal use.

DustingThe laminate may need occasional dusting. To keep the surfacebeautiful, use a non-oily furniture spray. (Remember to cleanthe spray off several times a year to prevent build-up.)Furniture polish can also help hide fine scratches in the surface.

On full-view back Aristocrat cages, the clear polycarbonateback panels can be cleaned with plain soap and water, or with amild commercial glass cleaner. Always use clean, soft clothsand keep in mind that hard scrubbing can scratch the panels.Thoroughly rinse with cold water and dry completely. Cleanany heavy deposits of animal fluids off the back panels as soonas possible before they harden.

Other than regular cleaning, the only routine maintenancerequired on Aristocrat cage arrangements is the semiannualinspection and lubrication of the casters on SSCI mobile bases.Refer to the Owner’s Manual supplied with the mobile base forinformation on inspection, lubrication, parts replacementprocedures, and part numbers for casters and brakes.

General Information Many of the threaded fasteners used on SSCI products aresecured with thread adhesive to insure structural integrity.Removing any screw or bolt may be difficult at first.During disassembly, retain all hardware items such asscrews, nuts, lockwashers, etc. for reassembly.If you have problems with any procedure, please feel tocall SSCI Customer Service at (800) 323-7366.

ProcedureNote: Removing and installing the door will be easier if asecond person supports the door while you work on the hinges.

1. If there are any accessories on the cage door that youwish to reuse (card holders, food and water bowls,etc.) remove them from the door.


3. With a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the two screws onthe lower door hinge (Figure 38), and remove bothhinge plates (Figure 39).

4. Unscrew the two screws on the upper door hinge, andremove both hinge plates, and the door.

7. Finish hanging the door by engaging the door into thelower hinge plates, and mounting them to the cage wall.

8. Tighten all hinge plate screws.

9. Open and close the door several times to make sure itswings and latches easily. If you have a problem, referto Door and Latch Adjustment on Page 63.

10. Remount any needed accessories onto the door.

Note: When mounting the new door, the upperhinge should be just above the top horizontaldoor rod (Figure 38), and the lower hinge shouldbe just below the bottom horizontal door rod.

Latch Connector(Single-door Cages)

Procedure1. Open the cage door.

Note: The latch connector is not symmetrical - the ends aredifferent (Figure 44).

2. Carefully note the orientation of thelatch connector to make sure you installthe replacement correctly.

3. With a Phillips screwdriver and a7/16 in. wrench, remove the two screws/nuts that hold the latch connector to theupper and lower latch connectorbrackets, and remove the latch connector(Figure 45).

4. Orient the new latch connector properlyand, with the screws/nuts removed inStep 3, mount the latch connector to thelatch brackets. Leave the screws/nutsslightly loose so that the latch connectoris free to move up and down to latch andunlatch properly.

5. Open and close the door several times tomake sure it swings and latches easily.If you have a problem, refer to Door andLatch Adjustment on Page 63.

4. Mount the new latch connector bracketto the cage wall with the screws removedin Step 3.

5. With the screw/nut removed in Step 2,remount the latch connector to the newlatch connector bracket. Leave thescrew/nut slightly loose so that the latchconnector is free to move up and downto latch and unlatch properly.

6. Open and close the door several times tomake sure it swings and latches easily.If you have a problem, refer to Door andLatch Adjustment on Page 63.

Latch Plate(Double-door Cages)

GeneralLatch plates are present only on double-door cages. There aretwo latch plates, one on the floor of the cage, and one on theceiling. The plates are identical, and are removed and installed inthe same way.


Procedure1. Open both cage doors.

2. Remove the divider panel, if installed.

3. With a Phillips screwdriver, remove the two mountingscrews that hold the latch plate to the cage, andremove the plate (Figure 47).

4. Mount the new latch plate to the cage with themounting screws removed in Step 3.

5. Open and close the doors several times to make surethey latch easily. If you have a problem, refer to Doorand Latch Adjustment on Page 63.

6. Replace the divider panel, if desired.

2. With a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the two screws onthe door hinge (Figure 48), and remove either or bothhinge plates, as required (Figure 49).

3. Engage the door frame into the new hinge plates, andmount the assembly to the cage wall.

2. Lift the retaining rod up until it clears the lower latchplate, then lower the rod until the top end clears theupper latch plate (Figure 50).

3. Slide the old divider panel out of the cage.

4. Slide the new divider panel into the cage and make surethat it seats into the divider channel at the rear of the cage.

5. Pass the round end of the retaining rod (Figure 51) upthrough the center hole in upper latch plate (Figure 50),then fit the flat end of the rod down into the center holein the lower latch plate.

Procedure1. Remove the divider panel. Refer to

2. With a Phillips screwdriver remove thethree mounting screws (Figure 52) thathold the divider channel in place, andremove the channel.

3. Hold the new channel in place and securewith the three mounting screws.

4. Install the divider panel. Refer to DividerPanel, Steps 4 and 5 on Page 57.

GeneralDivider panel retaining rods are present only on double-doorcages. These rods are mounted on the divider panels and holdthe front ends of the panels in place.


2. Lift the old retaining rod up until it clears the lowerlatch plate, then lower the rod until the top end clearsthe upper latch plate (Figure 53).

3. Pass the round end of the new retaining rod (Figure 51)up through the center hole in upper latch plate(Figure 53), then fit the flat end of the rod down into thecenter hole in the lower latch plate.

Latch Cover(Double-door Cages)

These instructions are suitable for any size, double-doorAristocrat cage. There is a latch cover on each door of the cage;they are identical and can be removed and installed the same way.

Tool RequiredSmall, flat-blade screwdriver

Procedure1. With a small, flat-blade screwdriver, unscrew the

retaining screw in the latch cover (Figure 54).

2. Lift off the latch cover.

3. Place the new latch cover on the latch mechanism withthe latch handles through the holes in the cover.

4. Secure the cover in place with the screw removed inStep 1.

Latch Rod(Double-door Cages)




These instructions are suitable for any size, double-doorAristocrat cage. There is one upper and one lower latch rod inthe latch mechanism on each double-door cage. All latch rodson a single cage are identical and can be removed and installedthe same way. Once you have removed the latch rod from themechanism, you can replace the latch rod, the retaining ring,the latch washers, and/or the latch spring.


Removal1. With a small, flat-blade screwdriver, unscrew the

retaining screw in the latch cover (Figure 54).

2. Lift off the latch cover.

3. Grasp the latch rod and pull it straight out, dis-engaging it from the upper or lower latch plate.Note: Be careful not to lose the washers on the latch rod.

4. Note carefully the orientation of the various parts onthe latch rod (Figures 55 and 56).

5. Slide the upper and lower washers off the latch rod.

6. With a small, flat-blade screwdriver, pry the retainingring off the latch rod.

7. Slide the spring off the latch rod.

Installation1. Slide the spring onto the latch rod.

2. Compress the spring downwards and push the retainingring into place in the groove in the latch rod.

3. Replace the washers onto the latch rod in the sameorientation as they were when you removed them.

4. Slide the upper end (or lower end, as appropriate)through the hole in the upper (or lower) latch plate,compress the spring and washers, and fit the latch rodinto place.

5. Replace the latch cover.

6. Secure the latch cover with the screw removed earlier.

Adjusting Door Position(All Cages)

GeneralIf the door rides too high or too low in the hinges, it may notlatch automatically when the door is closed.



2. With a Phillips screwdriver, slightly loosen all fourhinge plate screws (Figure 57).

3. Gently tap the door up or down as required. The topand bottom horizontal rods on the door should beequally spaced between the hinges.

4. Tighten all four hinge plate screws.

Adjusting the Latch(Single-door Cages)

GeneralIf the latch connector and door are not properly adjusted, youmay have difficulty in opening the door, and/or it may not latchautomatically when closed.

First, check the latch connector screws/nuts for propertightness. If the screws/nuts are too tight, it will prevent freemovement of the latch connector.

2. Try moving the latch connector up and down. It shouldmove freely.

3. If it does not, slightly loosen both latchconnector screws/nuts (Figure 58). Thesescrews/nuts must be loose enough to allowthe latch connector to move freely.

4. Close and open the door again, andrepeat the adjustment, if necessary, untilthe latch mechanism works smoothly.

5. If the door and/or latch still do notoperate properly, refer to Adjusting DoorPosition on Page 63.

GeneralIf the door fails to latch or unlatch properly, the latch rods maybe riding too high or too low in the upper and/or lower latchplates. The position of the latch rods is controlled by shimwashers inside the latch mechanism. Adding or removing shimwashers can alter the position of the latch rods in the latch plates.


Procedure1. Disassemble the latch mechanism. Refer to Latch Rod,

Removal, Steps 1 through 7 starting on Page 61.

2. Adjust the shim washers as necessary:To make the latch rod ride deeper in the latch plate (tolatch more tightly), reduce the number of washers nextto the retaining ring, and increase the number near the90° bend in the latch rod.To make the latch rod ride shallower in the latch plate(to unlatch more easily), increase the number ofwashers next to the retaining ring, and reduce thenumber near the 90° bend in the latch rod.

3. Reassemble the latch mechanism. Refer to Latch Rod,Installation, Steps 1 through 6 starting on Page 62.



Straightening aDeformed Door

GeneralIf the door will still not open or latch properly, it may havebeen deformed in some way.

Procedure1. Measure the door diagonally from upper-right to lower-

left (Figure 61) and record the dimension.

2. Measure the door from upper-left to lower-right andrecord that dimension.

3. Compare the two measurements - they should beidentical. If they are more than a tiny fraction different,the door has been deformed. Continue on to Step 4 tostraighten the door.

4. Remove the door from the cage. Refer to:Cage Door (Single-door Cages) - Procedure,

Steps 1 through 4 on Page 44).or:

Cage Door (Double-door Cages) - Procedure,Steps 1 through 4 on Page 51).

5. Hold the door by one of the corners of the longerdimension.

6. Rap the diagonally opposite corner of the door once,lightly on the floor. Note: Do not use great force; justone gentle rap is usually sufficient.

7. Remeasure the door and repeat the process until bothdimensions are the same.

8. When the door is correct, remount the door onto thecage. Refer to:

Cage Door (Single-door Cages) - Procedure,Steps 5 through 10 on Page 50).

9. Open and close the door several times to make sure itopens, swings, and latches easily.

Chapter 5 - Troubleshooting



The door does not close or latch correctly.

First: The latch brackets may be out of adjustment. Refer toDoor and Latch Adjustment on Page 63.

Remedial Action Please refer to the Owner’s Manual supplied with themobile base for more information.

First: You may just have a caster brake locked. Check thefront casters to make sure the OFF side of the brake lever isdown. Refer to Using the Wheel Brakes on Page 35.

Second: Check all casters for condition. Are they dirty,wobbly, badly bent, or in any way damaged? Have they beenlubricated in the last six months?

Animal hair, thread, and other materials can accumulate in thewheel bushing and prevent the wheel from turning freely.If substantial foreign matter is visible, disassemble the casterassembly, clean it thoroughly, reassemble, and lubricate it(Refer to Lubricating the Casters in the Base Owner’sManual).

If a caster is heavily rammed into a solid object, it can be bentin such a way as to jam the ball bearings. If this is the case, thecaster will be unable to align itself with the table’s direction ofmovement and will have to be replaced.

If a caster assembly is damaged or showing excess wear,replace it.

To order a new caster, contact SSCI Customer Service andorder the desired caster as shown in Table 5 on Page 15.

If you have misplaced your base Owner’s Manual, call SSCICustomer Service and ask for Stationary and Mobile RegalCage Bases Owner’s Manual, P/N 702714.



The cage/base rolls even when the brakes are on(Mobile Bases Only).

Please refer to the Owner’s Manual supplied with themobile base for more information.

First: Make sure the ON sides of the brake levers on the frontcasters are fully depressed. Refer to Using the Wheel Brakes onPage 38.

Second: Check the front casters for condition. Are they dirty,wobbly, badly bent? Have they been lubricated in the last sixmonths?

Hair, thread, and other materials can accumulate in the wheelbushing and prevent the brake from holding as it should.If substantial foreign matter is visible, disassemble the casterassembly, clean it thoroughly, reassemble, and lubricate it(Refer to Lubricating the Casters in the Base Owner’sManual). If cleaning and lubricating the casters does not fix theproblem, the casters with brakes should be replaced.

If a wheel/caster assembly is damaged or showing excess wear,replace it.

To order a new caster, contact SSCI Customer Service andorder the desired caster as shown in Table 5 on Page 15.
