The atmosphere was both vibrant and nostalgic for a life that was cut short and yet had been so fruitful. Both the audience and the stage was packed with people wanting to celebrate Kate, someone who inspired and continues to inspire so many with her rooted, inventive music. Following an introduction that recalled Kate’s life and her work with Ark T community arts in Cowley for which she raised money to set up the Young Women’s Music Project, The Kate Garrett band played a beautiful number: ‘Simple Life’. Alan Buckley interspersed the music with a striking reading of Hardy’s ‘The Darkling Thrush’, which was Kate’s favourite poem by one of her most-loved poets. Uneek, part of the Ark T initiative, followed with her MC style that really changed the pace of the evening and had a great impact, not only MAGDALEN COLLEGE SCHOOL OXFORD Independent day school for boys 7-18 and Sixth Form girls RECORDER TEACHER (to start November 2010) We are seeking an enthusiastic musician with a real commitment to teaching, to join this vibrant and highly successful Music Department. For further information and to apply please visit http://ukjobs.oup.com The Death and Life of Charlie St Cloud [12A] Currently showing: Odeon George St, Vue Cinema Movie maturity beckons to Zac Efron and his legion of fans in The Death and Life of Charlie St Cloud. All about moving on, St Cloud is like a metaphor for Efron’s career. Heart throb in High School Musical to stellar acting talent is a giant leap. And Efron’s wisely taking his fans with him. One film at a time. Charlie St Cloud is a yachtsman with the world at his feet. Wanting one big win, there’s nothing more important, except maybe his younger brother. Promising to meet the baseball- besotted kid every night for an hour’s practice before Charlie leaves for college, the boys bicker and bond. But one tragic car journey changes everything. Or does it? Is it his brother’s ghost that he meets each night, or the trick of a grief-stricken mind? Either way, Charlie’s chucked his dreams for life among the dead as a graveyard caretaker. A freak and a failure? Attracted to an ambitious young yachtswoman (Amanda Crew), will life bloom again? Can Charlie bear to leave his brother behind? It sounds mawkish and a bit familiar. And it’s both. But director Burr Steers, re-teamed with Efron after the superior time-warp comedy 17 Again, succeeds in pitching it boldly where no one’s gone before. While the same teen audience is munching on the Twilight franchise, Efron’s latest vehicle flashes his torso but also gives them more to think about. Sure, the ‘I see dead people’ trick reminds you of the The Sixth Sense. And the baseball- meet-ups are out of Field of Dreams. But, as Burr says, no one in the target zone for this film has seen those movies. So St Cloud feels more fresh than it is. And it works. The supernatural touches are quietly, spookily surprising. And Burr’s film looks fabulous. Building on Efron’s pretty boy looks, the whole thing’s beautiful, suiting the spiritual, ethereal tone. And Efron certainly burns the celluloid, visually and as an actor. A step back from his exceptional performance in Me and Orson Welles, this is definitely one for the fans. But Efron will soon be stealing DiCaprio’s roles from under his nose. Here the writ-large script is embarrassing, double-playing key scenes just in case we didn’t get the point. But it’s a genuinely affecting drama of love, loss and hope. And a refreshingly quirky cameo from British actor Augustus Prew (About A Boy), as Efron’s cockney mate, grounds things with welcome edge and humour. Most teen films about death and the supernatural are slashers or fantasy pics. St Cloud pushes the boat out and treats the audience with respect. See it as an adult, it’s forced and familiar. As a teen, it’s new and inventive. Yes, Efron’s taking his fans for a ride. But it’s his journey too. And St Cloud is a superior film, well worth seeing. Glenn Watson, 2/10/10 because of the triumphant performance of Ark T’s Zahra Tehrani on drums. Rachel Hughes too on the piano and voice unleashed a stunningly deep, throaty voice singing her own song ‘Stormy Weather’ on which Kate had once played flute. Duotone and its cellist Barney Morse-Brown was awesome, with Barney being a continued presence throughout the evening playing with many different groups of musicians. The evening was described by one of the musicians as a ‘school concert’ and this is a great way to describe the evening. With the off-stage musicians smiling and dancing in the wings, the relaxed atmosphere and the variety of performance- from poetry readings, to MC-ing to accapella, electric guitar solos and soft folk played by a full band, the concert reflected the dynamism of Kate Garrett whilst showing the talent that surrounded her and continues to thrive, remembering her contribution to the British music scene. King of the BirdsA celebration of the life and works of the late Kate GarrettCompère and poetry slam maestro Alan Buckley opened this epic show by talking about the ‘tribe’ of supporters that had come to celebrate the life and work of the late Kate Garrett.

Uneek, part of the Ark T initiative, followed with her MC style that really changed the pace of the evening and had a great impact, not only

The Death and Life of Charlie St Cloud [12A]Currently showing: Odeon George St, Vue CinemaMovie maturity beckons to Zac Efron and his legion of fans in The Death and Life of Charlie St Cloud. All about moving on, St Cloud is like a metaphor for Efron’s career. Heart throb in High School Musical to stellar acting talent is a giant leap. And Efron’s wisely taking his fans with him. One film at a time.Charlie St Cloud is a yachtsman with the world at his feet. Wanting one big win, there’s nothing more important, except maybe his younger brother. Promising to meet the baseball-besotted kid every night for an hour’s practice before Charlie leaves for college, the boys bicker and bond. But one tragic car journey changes everything. Or does it?Is it his brother’s ghost that he meets each night, or the trick of a grief-stricken mind? Either way, Charlie’s chucked his dreams for life among the dead as a graveyard caretaker. A freak and a failure? Attracted to an ambitious young yachtswoman (Amanda Crew), will life bloom again? Can Charlie bear to leave his brother behind? It sounds mawkish and a bit familiar. And it’s both. But director Burr Steers, re-teamed with Efron after the superior time-warp comedy 17 Again, succeeds in pitching it boldly where no one’s gone before. While the same teen audience is munching on the Twilight franchise, Efron’s latest vehicle flashes his torso but also gives them more to think about.Sure, the ‘I see dead people’ trick reminds you of the The Sixth Sense. And the baseball-meet-ups are out of Field of Dreams.

Glenn Watson, 2/10/10

because of the triumphant performance of Ark T’s Zahra Tehrani on drums.
