The Nissen-Emery Award is the highesthonor in collegiate gymnastics. Awardedin recognition of outstanding athletic

achievement, academic excellence and sports-manship, it is equivalent to college football’sHeisman Trophy.

Presented annually to the top collegiatemale senior gymnast in the United States, theaward was originally named the Nissen Awardafter George Nissen, a former NCAAChampion, for his contributions to the sport. In1997, it was renamed the Nissen-Emery Awardin honor of former Penn State gymnast Dr.Robert Emery for his support of the sport.Emery won the award in 1969.

Mike “Spider” Maxwell is the last NittanyLion to win the award. He won the award in1987 after placing 12th in the all-around at the1987 NCAA Championships, and finished sev-enth on parallel bars and 10th on the vault.

Three other Nittany Lions have receivedthe prestigious award. Steve Cohen, the 1967winner, was Penn State’s first recipient, followedby Emery in 1969 and Gene Whelan in 1976.

Penn State’s four recipients is tied withOklahoma for the most in the award’s history.The first award was presented in 1966.
