. FOREWORD

The publication by the Pacific Islands Studies Program of Dr. William Coppell's World Catalogue of Theses and Dissertations is a happy occasion as it marks the second first for both. Two years ago this program published his Bibliographies of the Kermadec Islands, Niue, Swains Island and the Tokelau -Islands; in that his section on the ~Kermadec Islands was the first of its kind, and he commendably brought the other area entries of Niue, Swains and the Tokelau Island.s up to date with numerous new entries.

The present bibliography should prove very useful to Pacific Islandsoriented schola.rs and academicians as well as to students in the field of education who are working towards their degrees, particularly in Pacific higher education institutions. It is tne first worldwide catalog of the Pacific, one whose entries come from North'American, European, Asian, Pad.fic Islands and Commonwealth institutions of higher learning. It includes data on the date, degree conferred and. pagination of each work. The author has attempted to verify the availability to scholars of each work cited.

A grant from the U.S. Office of EducatiOn ,t.o the Pacific Islands Studies Center has helped to make this publication possible. To both Dr. Coppell and the Center,mahal0.

ACKNCMLEDGMENTS

It is necessary to express the author's sincere appreciation of the encouragement he received from the Director, Dr. Carl J. Daeufer, and staff of the Pacific Studies Program, University of Hawaii, which resulted in the publication of this Catalogue.

Generous credit must also be given to Phyllis Turnbull for her editor:i..a1 work in bringing the manuscript to a publishable form. Finally, the author must express his appreciation to the Librarian and staff of Macquarie University who gave invaluable assistance in tracing and verifying the entries in the Catalogue.

PURPOSE OF CATALOGUE:

This catalogue of theses and dissertations concerning

the education of the peoples of the Pacific Islands is designed

to provide a systematic listing of theses and dissertations.

The purpose is to indicate the scope of the research undertaken

and to allow research students the opportunity to became aware

of prior work in their fields of interest.

AREAS OF REFERENCE OF CATALOGUE:

In general the catalogue is confined to work at the

master's and doctoral levels, although some bachelor's theses

have been included where it is considered that the particular

subject has special significance. Diploma theses presented at

New Zealand universities are included as the studies are carried

out as postgraduate work.

A number of catalogues of theses were consulted as

reference sources, but details of many of the entries were

obtained by correspondence with the Deans and Heads of Schools

of the many university departments, Schools and Faculties of

Education which have been concerned with research in the educa

tional situation of the peoples of the Pacific Islands. Theses and

dissertations which deal with the New Zealand Maori have been

iii

Page 6: PACIFIC ISLANDS PROGRAM - University of Hawaii at …€¦ · PACIFIC ISLANDS PROGRAM ... University of New Zealand (Auckland), 1952. 92p. ... The education ordinance of 1916:

included as it is considered that it would be illogical to divorce

the New Zealand Polynesian from other Pacific groups.

Items dealing with the various ethnic groups which comprise

the population of Hawaii have also been included as they reflect

the various relationships between the various groups.

BIBLIOGRAPHICAL DETAILS:

An effort has been made to ascertain as completely as

possible full bibliographical details of each entry, but unfortunately

some deficiencies exist.

The compiler would be grateful to receive any information

which will either add additional entries or amend the entries in

the catalogue.

CUT-OFF POINT:

The end of 1976 is taken as the cut-off point for the

catalogue. (Excep tions: Hindson, p. 16; Palmer, ADDENDA).

SUBJECT INDEX:

The entries in the catalogue have been cross-referenced

in the subject index by countries and regions. In several instances

references to individual theses or dissertations may appear under

several country or regional headings.

Pacific Islands Studies Program Miscellaneous Work Paper Series

Since 1973 the Pacific Islands Studies Program has engaged in duplicating inexpensively various work papers whose contents appear to justify a wider dissemination than that of classroom contact or intra-University circulation. Most of these works consist of student papers submitted in academic courses, and which to some limited extent represent a contribution to existing knowledge of the Pacific Islands. Several works have centered on the preparation of bibliographies; heretofore not published but judged to be of important value to students and scholars engaged in Pacific Islands Studies.

The title, author and date of each publication in the series is listed below. A publication may be presently out-of-print; however in the event there are sufficient requests, the PISP may consider a reprint. It should be noted that copies have and/or are made available only to institutions and scholars interested and engaged in Pacific Islands Studies.
