Pakistan School

Attack

On the 17th December 2014, a greatly upsetting attack took place in

Pakistan. Taliban terrorists shot 132 children [aging from twelve to six-

teen], ten school staff members, including the principal of the school, and

three soldiers in the Army Public School and Degree College. A hundred

people were also injured, many having gunshot wounds.

It was found out that the terrorists burst into the auditorium where a

large number of students were taking an exam and gunned down many of

them within minutes. A 14-year-old survivor, Ahmed Faraz, recalled that

one of the terrorists ordered his men to kill all the children hiding under

the benches. They carried on shooting incessantly.

Parents send their children to school expecting them to be safe. How-

ever in some countries, school is not as safe as schools in Singapore. So,

we should stay alert and be thankful to have this privilege for the safe en-

vironment where we study in. It was also said that the students thought

that the attack was a drill. As a result, most of them did not take it very

seriously.

Having said that, many of us tend to take drills in school lightly by

joking around and thinking that it is a waste of time. These attacks can be

avoided if all of us cooperate and stay united. The root cause of such at-

tacks is based on a religion not being accepted by others around them.

In this article, we observe that the Islamic culture was not accepted

and thus these attacks occurred. All in

all, every one of us should respect

each other’s religions and cultures,

which is why racial harmony day is

celebrated.

the use of liquor and allows drink-

ers to recover their health instead

of drinking twenty-four-seven and

ruining their body through alcohol

poisoning, diabetes and even can-

cer.

However, I think that both

sides have equal rights – the work-

ing adults and children. The adults

have to release their stress and re-

lax from the hustle and bustle of

the busy Singapore we live in. Oth-

er than that, have you ever thought

of the workers who help us build

our roads, buildings and tourist at-

tractions attaining sunburn? Well,

drinking beer is cooling to your

body.

Although you would feel warm

after drinking it as it opens your

blood vessels, the effect will revert

as your blood vessels will narrow

down. Furthermore, drinking ac-

tually helps you to lose your con-

centration and allows you to slip

off into your own little world. To

sum it up, I really think adults

should have the freedom to drink

wherever they are, proposal or not.

Andrea Yap (2F)

Recently, Singapore has put

liquor usage under strict control

after 10:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. in the

morning. Consumers are allowed

to drink in pubs, coffee shops and

other places such as clubs. If done

otherwise, they would be fined up

to S$1000.

What I think about this pro-

posal is that it prevents any acci-

dents relating violent drunkards.

Also, other countries try to protect

the vulnerable children in their

rapidly growing population too,

like Australia, United Kingdom

and much more. What I think is

that we should be grateful that

Singapore has kept us safe and

sound, and is still doing so by try-

ing to minimise incidents that cre-

ate havoc in our lively neighbour-

hood.

In fact, I think that the curb is

also important as it helps control

Vandalism Being in CHIJ St. Joseph’s Convent, I’ve been reminded countless

of times not to vandalise; “Don’t draw on your table, don’t draw on the

walls, it is not your house, you will have to pay for it…” However how

seriously do we take this? Do we know the dire repercussions of vandal-

ism? Of course not, but now we finally have an issue to look into.

Vandalism is an act of defiance. It is drawing and scribbling on ob-

jects and walls especially on things that do not belong to you. It is un-

healthy and mean to do so. However, one incident that had happened

seems to have given us the opportunity to learn from

Today, one of the most prominent figures from World War 2 would

be the well known Anne Frank. Anne was a thirteen year old girl born

in Holland and she had written in her diary about her life, especially to-

wards the end of her life as she was betrayed and killed by the Nazis.

Her diary till today is one of the most popular World War Two

books which has been bought by close to 30 million people in the

world. The diary tells us about her life living under the reign of the Na-

zis, as well as her life growing up under

constant fear and unhappiness.

However, in Japan, over 300 books of

Anne Frank’s Diary has been damaged

and vandalized. This had caused much

confusion and anger as people were con-

fused as to who would have done some-

thing like that. These copies of Anne

Frank’s Diary have been vandalised in

over 38 libraries in Tokyo Japan.

To this, police have been investigating

as to who would provoke such incidents.

To this, people have been criticizing

Japan considering its number of contro-

RACISM IN RACISM IN RACISM IN RACISM IN

THE MIDDLE EASTTHE MIDDLE EASTTHE MIDDLE EASTTHE MIDDLE EAST Racism is the belief that characteristics and abilities can be attribut-

ed to people simply on the basis of their race and that some racial groups

are superior to others.

Racism is also a very touchy subject for some people. Some people

argue that talking about supporting racial discrimination and prejudice

is just words and that free speech should allow such views to be aired

without restriction.

In a number of countries in the Middle East, discriminatory practice

has been a common country where the terrible acts of terrorism commit-

ted by terrorists in America. There has additionally been an outpouring

of violent racial hatred by a minority of people in Western countries

against people that look Middle Eastern.

For a period of time, there has been resentment by many in the Mid-

dle East at the policies of America in their region. For many of the more

extremist factions, this has turned into a form of racism as well, where

many things that are Western are

hated or despised.

I think we should not judge

one another by their race, religion

or culture because after all, we are

all still the same. We should learn

to love and accept everyone!

The Divergent sequel; Insurgent is

looking FIERCE. Out on March 20th

Avid fans of the Divergent trilogy were over-

joyed on Friday with the release of the new Insurgent trailer, which was

chock-full of action. When last we saw Tris (Shailene Woodley) at the

end of the smash-hit movie Divergent, she was

leading a band of survivors out of the ruins they

once occupied and into the dystopian ruins out-

side of Chicago.

Her adventure will continue next March in

Insurgent, and the sequel just shared its first-

Dance of the Shadows Dance of the Shadows Dance of the Shadows Dance of the Shadows

by Yelena Black

Dancing with someone is an act of trust.

Elegant and intimate; you're close enough to

kiss, close enough to feel your partner's

heartbeat. But for Vanessa, dance is very

deadly - and she must be extra careful in who

she trusts...

Vanessa Adler attends an elite ballet

school - the same one her older sister, Mar-

garet, attended before she disappeared, never

to be found. Vanessa feels that she can never

live up to her sister's reputation. However,

there’s just something intriguing about

Vanessa as she dances. With her glorious red hair and fair skin, she has a

kind of intensity and liveliness while dancing - she loses herself in the

music, breathes a different kind of air, and the world around her just

turns to flames.

Soon she attracts the attention of three men: gorgeous Zeppelin

Black, the mysterious Justin, and the great, enigmatic choreographer

Josef Zhalkovsky. When Josef asks Vanessa to dance the lead in the Fire-

bird, she has hardly any idea of the danger that lies ahead and the burn-

ing forces about to be unleashed.

But when Vanessa’s friend goes missing and Zep reveals a dark,

shocking secret… will she be doomed to relive her sister’s bizarre fate?

Or will her talent be her saving grace?

Read Dance of Shadows by Yelena Black to find out more. This rivet-

ing, alluring and necromantic book is a must read for anybody who en-

joys dance and a little mystery! This book has captivated me. The way

the author describe Vanessa‘s passion for dancing and how she dance

herself makes me feel like dancing myself. The mysteries in the story

Japanese Rice Japanese Rice Japanese Rice Japanese Rice

CookerCookerCookerCooker

The rice cooker was developed in Japan,

where they are known as suihanki (炊飯器).

Like the name states, it is used to make rice

but now we humans have outsmarted an au-

tomatic machine, it can be used to cook all

sorts of meals. How the rice cooker works is

that there is a heating plate inside the rice

cookers “shell”, which heats up the inner

cooking pot. You put in the number of rice

cups you need as well as how much water

you need, press start

and the rest is up to

the cooker.

There are many creative ways of using a rice

cooker that people have discovered or tried out.

Even with all these features already built within

the cooker, users come up with even more things

to do with the features. There are now even

cookbooks that have recipes using rice cookers

to make meals quick and less hassle. You can al-

so make stuff like chocolate lava cake!
