Pardubice – a brief history of the townPardubice boomed after 1491, when the town was bought by the mightiest nobleman and steward of the Czech Kingdom- Vilem of Pernstein. He chose Pardubice as the centre of his manor and started to build a town which corresponded to his status. Construction was so sumptuous that it coined the proverb “it glitters like Pardubice’. Today we can thank the Pernstein family for the beautiful historical centre with its renaissance square, which has been a town conserva-tion area since 1964. Another work of the Perstein family is a unique conversion of the former castle into a comfortable palace surrounded by a massive fort. Another important milestone of Pardubice history was in 1845, when a train passed through Pardubice for the first time on the Prague-Olomouc track. The town became an important railway junction and with this came the development in agriculture, enginee-ring and chemical industries. This naturally brought with it the deve-lopment of social and culture life. In 1874, the world famous horse race The Great Pardubice Steeplechase took place here for the first time. The Pardubice native Jan Kaspar was the first Czech aviator to successfully take off and land an aircraft in 1910. A year later he and his plane, the Bleriot, undertook the maiden flight from Pardubice to Prague – further contributing to Pardubice’s fame.Development of the town was stopped by the German occupation. The local resistance movement was influenced mainly by the para-chute group Silver A, whose members – Czechoslovak soldiers sent to the protectorate from England – found in Pardubice and the surroun-dings help and shelter for maintaining connections between the home resistance movement and the foreign resistance movement. The assassination of the Reichs protector Reinhard Heydrich was thought to be connected with Silver A. As retribution, 194 Czech patriots were executed by the Nazi regime at the Zamecek execution site between 3 June and 9 July 1942. At present, Pardubice is proud not only of its long tradition in the area of horse racing and gingerbread making, but also the Golden Helmet speedway race, Junior tennis championship and many other events held during the year. Pardubice is proud to offer cyclists and horse back riders a dense and safe network of bike paths and tracks.

green gate 1

The Green Gate represents one of the most important historic features of Pardubice. Together with the castle, it dominates the historical centre of Pardubice. Today the Green Gate consists of a  renaissance style entrance gate decorated by a relief according to the design by Mikolas Ales. It portrays the heraldic legend of the Masters of Pardubice, whose coat of arms is used by Pardubice as its own. The Green Gate is a popular exhibition centre for local artists. Behind the entrance gate, a tower rises more than 60 metres and offers beautiful views of the town conservation area, castle, and the surrounding hinterland – including Kuneticka Hora castle. In the tower of the Green Gate there is an exhibition called the Chronicle of Pardubice town. Here, you can get acquainted with the legends about the coat of arms of the Masters of Pernstein as well as the coat of arms of the Masters of Pardubice.

heraldic legend portrayed in the relief of the renaissance gate:Depicts the Bohemian king Vratislav II and Emperor Fridrich Bar-barossa on their way to Italy in order to conquer the town of Milan. In this battle, it was mainly Czech warriors who excelled with their bravery. During one night raid on Milan, they managed to seize horses and property of Milan. However, the inhabitants of the town began to fight back and push the Czechs out of town. They lowered the iron bars of the gate on the last of the escaping warriors – Jesek of Pardubice. Although the white horse was cut in half, it managed to carry its master for several metres. The brave knight carried the loyal half-horse back to the encampment of his king Vratislav II. As a medal of honour for his fearlessness, the front half of the white horse was inscribed by the king into the coat of arms.

Pernstynske Square 2

Pernstynske Square became the centre of the town conservation area in 1964. The square occupies approximately 6,200 m2 and is bordered by 30 houses. The houses on the square document three basic stages of building development – late gothic (characterised by stone arches of the windows) renaissance (terracotta window frames) and late baroque and classicist (gables and stuccoed decoration). The most striking impact to the appearance of the square was the building of the town hall at the end of the 19th century.

town hall 3

The construction of the new town hall in the years 1892–1894 repre-sents the biggest change to the former core of the town in modern times. The town hall stands in the place of the old town hall and another three demolished houses on the northern side of the square. The town

in the Church of St. Bartholomew.

Regional library 4

House number 77 / Oesterreicher’s House 77 stands as an example of town square’s development. On the facade, there are late gothic as well as renaissance features. Renova-tions in the 1960’s uncovered numerous gothic features including two painted niches on the second floor and some remains of colour decora-tion of the facade. On the ground floor, you can find remnants of an old medieval well. house number 78, called klepsatlovsky, has a gothic- renaissance facade with a gable attic. On the first floor, late gothic windows with stone frames survived. On the second floor, there are pernstyn renaissance windows with terracotta frames around which some remnants of gothic painted flowers were uncovered.

hall was built according to the design of the architect Jan Wejrych. The dominant feature of the town hall are its two towers which divide the construction at the front into three parts. Between the towers above the second floor rises a gable, in the middle of which the coat of arms is placed. The statue of a knight – the guardian of the town decorates the gable of the town hall. The statute was inspired by the figure of Vojtech of Pernstein on the tombstone in the Church of St. Bartholomew.

Soap maker’s house, Werner Residence 5

House number 116 / 1st Town hallIn the years 1505–1515 here stood Pardubice’s first town hall. After the fire in 1507 it was built again in the gothic style as a single storey house. Another renaissance style floor was added after the fire in 1538 and included an arched gable with ‘plastic’ semi-pillars. Despite a fire and the Thirty-Year War, the gothic support arch over the entrance to Bartholomew Lane survived. In its three chapels with serrated tips, we can see colour figures representing a squire, a clown and a noblewoman. They were walled up and again uncovered during reconstruction in 1904, when it belonged to Karel Werner. The house was owned by his father, who was mayor of Pardubice in the years 1879–1888. Here he hosted some important Czech personalities, such as writer Jan Neruda and composer Bedrich Smetana.

At the White horse“ restaurant 7

House number 60 / Románovsky “At the White Horse“ was built by the rich burgomaster Jan Roman, who survived Pardubice’s first major fire in 1538 in the same building. On the ground floor, next to the entrance, there is a hall with a vault supported asymmetrically by a central pillar. A vaulted hall is also on the first floor. The ground floor has a long tradition, operating as a tap-room since 1507. The restaurant was reopened after reconstruction in 1970. A baroque gable is above the raised central ledge.

marian Column with balustrade 6

In 1698 Pardubice had built, in the middle of Pernstyn, square a stone column with a gold-plated statue of the Virgin Mary stand-ing on the crescent and facing the town hall. In 1695 the Pardubice dean Valentyn Klecak had it built by an unknown Italian artist in thanks to the Virgin Mary for protecting the town from plague in 1680. Religious pilgrimages to the statue of the Virgin Mary were held and schoolchildren used to have theatre performances here. In 1773–1777 town representatives commissioned local sculptor Jakub Teply to create an ornate balustrade around the Column where the provincial symbols are placed. These include the symbols of Pardu-bice and Vienna. In the corners there are Czech lions and the object is decorated in two rows by eight statues of saints considered to be the prominent patrons of the Czech lands.

“At Saint Wenceslas“ 8 House number 3 / Sisatkovsky House After 1538, the originally gothic house was rebuilt in the renaissance style. Worth noting are the gothic painted niches, Renaissance terra-cotta door frames, a three-piece late baroque gable from the second half of the 18th century (with corrugated cornices and ledges) and a statue of St. Wenceslas on a horse from 1799 made by Jakub Teply. In the past it served as a prison and at present as the Mázhaus exhi-bition centre. (on page 41)

Annunciation of the virgin mary Church 11

Annunciation of the Virgin Mary Church is one of the oldest build-ings in Pardubice. Its existence is documented to the second half of the 14th century. At the beginning of the 16th century the church was rebuilt by Vilem of Pernstein. It is unique that the nave of the church has a late gothic ribbed vault, while the presbytery has a cel-lar vault. In the 1630’s its parish function was transferred to the St. Bartholomew Church and Minorites came to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary Church. Thus it became a monastery. A Latin high school established here in the 18th century with classes taking place in the surrounding buildings. The monastery was abolished during Joseph II’s reforms in 1786. The Minorites left behind them a vast underground network of catacombs beneath the church. Some of the larger sec-tions were used as an air raid shelter during World War II.

“Small Castle” 12

A  small castle forms a  connecting line between the main castle and the town. It functioned as a fortified front gate and back office for the manor administration. Buildings in the closed area of the small castle served as store houses, manor offices, a prison and apartments. Today, one of the buildings houses the Pardubice Gallery. (on page 40)

“At Jonas house” 9 House number 50 The most admired baroque example in Pardubice is house number 50 on the eastern side of Pernstyn square called “At Jonas”. The front of the house is decorated by a  large embossed relief domi-nated by a  figure of the biblical prophet Jonas in the mouth of

matejovsky / old Pharmacy 10 House number 51 The house has a late gothic core and a two-nave hall on the ground floor. The classicist front from the end of the 18th century was modi-fied in the 19th century. In 1806 the pharmacist Josef Mensik estab-lished a pharmacy. In 1914 the facade was completed with motifs from the field of pharmacy. In the gable there is an Aesculapius relief. After 1950 the pharmacy was placed under state control and in 1979 it was closed after being business for 173 years. Today it houses the FONS Gallery. (on page 41)

Pardubice Castle 13

Pardubice Castle is an extraordinary historical object. You will find here the oldest known Czech nude painting titled ‘capricious fortune’. There are also knightly halls with the oldest renaissance murals in Bohemia, the recently re-opened Three Kings Chapel, and the le-gendary secret civil defence shelter in the northeast castle rampart. The surviving original blue prints of a planned ‘water castle’ are also here. The designs depict a  large, yet comfortable renaissance cas-tle sheltered from the outside world by massive earth fortifications. The designs were made under the supervision of The Masters of Pernstein. Today, Pardubice Castle serves as the head office of the East Bohemian Museum (on page 38) and East Bohemian Gallery (on page 40).

Symbols of the masters of Pernstein According to the legend, there lived in the forests in Moravia a poor coal worker named Vojtech. One day, Vojtech realised that someone was stealing food from his simple shack. Immediately, he kept watch of his shack and waited for the thief to arrive. To his surprise he found out that it was a wild bison. Vojtech grabbed the animal by its horns with all his power – but he did not know what to do next. Legend has it that a bird in a tree cried at him: “shoe lace, shoe lace…!“ Vojtech unwound a  shoelace from his shoe, pleated a ring and stuck it through the bison´s nostrils. He took the conquered animal to the castle, where in front of the astonished onlookers he cut off its head with one blow. He had saved the manor from an enraged bison and for this heroic deed his lord gave Vojtech a crest – a black bison head with a ring in its nostrils. Vojtech was also given the forests where he once used to burn coal to build a castle.

Werner´s embankment 14 Werner´s embankment and the surrounding lanes represent one of the most picturesque and peaceful corners of old Pardubice. How-ever, it once used to be quite busy here. The so called “town river“ or “ditch“, which was dug out by order of Vilem of Pernstein at the turn of the 16th century used to flow through here. We can still see some remains of it. This amazing Pernstein water structure served the town as an important source of clean water and became a kind of a  centre of production in medieval Pardubice. At the end of Werner´s embankment, the ditch powered water wheels of a malt-house and a mill – later called the imperial mill. Several metres from the mill there stood a town bath. In the place where the back part of the Town Hall is visible today there used to be a town brewery which also used water from the ditch. A little further along, not far from St. Bartholomew Church, there were butchers’ shops. Today a four-lane road runs along Suk Avenue.

St. Bartholomew Church 15 St. Bartholomew Church was built at the beginning of the 16th century It was designed to serve the Catholic minority and at the same time as a family tomb belonging to the Czech branch of the Pernstein fa-mily. The dominant feature of the church presbytery is formed by

The surviving original disposition and painted decorations makes this church a unique example of churches from this area in the 16th century.

Republic SquareAt the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century the area of Republic Square was modified to become a seamless connection between the Old and New Town. Here you will find a number of build-ings designed by important and well known 20th century architects – the Square is practically an open-air museum!

East Bohemian theatre Pardubice

Belongs to the oldest permanent theatres in Bohemia. The founda-tion stone was laid exactly on the day of the 39th anniversary of the laying the foundation stone of the National Theatre. The art nouveau building of the Town Theatre was built between 1906–1909. The project was prepared by the architect Antonin Balsanek. Above the timpani decorated by the town symbol rises the statue of “Genia“ with the face of Ema Destinova, a famous Czech 20th century opera singer. The author of Genia statue is the academic sculptor Bohumil Kafka – better known as the author of the largest equestrian statue in the world – the Zizkov monument on Vitkov hill in Prague. The medallions of prominent Czech composers and playwrights were made by Bohumil Vlcek.

grand Shopping CentreBuilt in the 16th century, on the current location of the Grand Shopping Centre, stood a  customs house which was demolished during the Thirty-Year War in 1639 by the Swedish soldiers. In 1869 Mr. and Mrs. Patzelt bought the plot and established Hotel Kettle. In 1931 after long preparations, the Grand Hotel (designed by the architect Josef Gocar) came into operation on this site. The hotel was designed to be a representative multipurpose building and for many generations was the social focal point in Pardubice.

Pardubice Automatic millsAt the end of the Old Town, behind the bridge over the Chrudimka river there is the dominant building of Pardubice Automatic Mills. This extensive infrastructure was built by the Winternitz family – a promi-nent Jewish dynasty. The Winternitz family had the mills building built according to the design of the famous architect Josef Gocar in 1910. The (later) structurally modified mill is an example of the use of quality modern architecture in a production facility.

Regional and town office

The building of the District Office, which is used by the Municipality of Pardubice and the Regional Office of Pardubice Region, was built in 1924 to serve as post and telegraph headquarters. The building was designed by the architect Ladislav Machon, and is a  splendid exam-ple of modern architecture. The building’s constructional style reveals the creator´s  sensitive approach to surrounding older buildings. Dur-ing World War II it became infamous for being the office of the Nazi “Schutzpolizei.“ Resistance fighters were questioned and tortured here.

komerční banka (Commerce Bank)The building of the present Komerční banka was originally a  pub named “At the Czech Crown.” The first amateur theatre performances in Pardubice took place here. In 1923 the pub was sold to the English-Czech bank. In 1925 the bank had a new building built there based on the design of Josef Gocar – a Czech architect whose works from the cubist and functionalist period belong to the highlights of Czech mo-dern architecture.

Belfry / monument of the fallenSince 1556, at the place of the present belfry, used to stand a stack for bells, panelled by an octagonal plank prism. During the Thirty-Year War the belfry burned down and a new one with a brick lower chamber was built in its place. In 1680, when Bohemia was struck by the plague, the town built here a chapel dedicated to St. Roch, a protector from the plague. In 1833 the chapel was consequently abolished and the altar carried to St. Bartholomew Church. In 1930 the belfry acquired the present appearance thanks to the then mayor J. Prokop. A monument to the fallen soldiers of the First World War was erected at the belfry.

food technical SchoolIn 1931 the new building of the Industrial Museum came into exist-ence on Republic Square opposite St. Bartholomew Church. However, it was not used for its purpose for a long time. After the Second World War the Industrial Museum ceased to exist and the building was soon used by the present Secondary Food Technical School. On the premises there is a working miniature of an automatic mill.

trailsArchitecture of the 20th century

Pardubice Railway StationThe central railway station in Pardubice is one of the most significant buildings of post war functionalism. It is the masterpiece of architect Karel Repa, who worked on the project with fellow architect Josef Danda. Opened in 1958 and after 50 years of full operation it is one of the most inviting railway stations in the Czech Republic. Passenger comfort is provided by a spacious, heated hall. Thanks to ‘shell’ roof-ing, no columns were needed. The station is now an officially pro-tected landmark on the historical register.

CrematoriumA significant building of the 20th century architecture which documents Pardubice’s boom. It is the masterpiece of the architect Pavel Janak and the painter and designer Frantisek Kysela. It was chosen from almost a hundred designs in an architectonic competition in 1918. The object is designed in the post war rondo cubism style and emphasises spiritual content (from the old Christian basilica principle). Circle forms and red-white colouration – in the spirit of national colours – could be related to by the public and corresponded well with the atmosphere of the establishment of the First Republic. The Crematorium is a national cultural monument.

Zámeček monumentAt this place, 194 Czech citizens from Pardubice and the surrounding areas were executed in the period of Nazi terror following the assas-sination of the Reichsprotektor Heydrich. In operation here you can find a  touch info kiosk which acquaints visitors with the events in 1942. The Zámeček Monument is freely accessible every day (except Monday) from May to November from 10.00 a.m. to 05.00 p.m.

the Passage PalaceThe townhouse with shopping mall was realised in 1925 in art deco style according to the design of Ladislav Machon. At its comple-tion, the ‘Passage’ consisted of residential units, 28 shops and even an underground restaurant. The house is a  listed cultural monument.

kladruby nad labem national horse-Breeding farmThe Kladruby nad Labem horse stud is world renowned thanks to its pedigree breeding of horses. In 1579 Emperor Rudolph II gave it the status of an imperial stud, whose task was to breed representative coach horses for the needs of the court. Thanks to the breeding pro-gram in Kladruby, a unique population of pedigree Old Kladruby white horses have survived. These horses, together with the farm have been declared a cultural heritage. Visitors can make a tour around the farm with special guides, ride on horseback in the picturesque surroundings, or take a horse drawn coach ride.

Horses Horses26

horsesPardubice has had horses in its coat of arms from as early as the 12th century. Horses are more than a  mere symbol – they are a main attribute of this region. In the first half of the 19th century in Pardubice there were held so called par force de chiens hunts. Steeplechase was a natural progression and the renowned Great Pardubice Steeplechase was born. Until today, it remains one of the most difficult races on the European continent. The unique horse race was held for the first time in 1874. In the nearby sur-roundings you can find two exceptional sights: the oldest horse-breeding farm in the world – Kladruby nad Labem, famous for breeding Old Kladruby horses, and Slatinany, where apart from a horse-breeding farm, you can see a hippologic museum with the largest collection in Europe. In Pardubice and the surroun-dings you will find many places where you can experience a won-derful holiday on horseback.

Agrofert ParkThe Pardubice Racecourse occupies an area of 54 hectares and is a  modern racing and riding area meeting all European standards. This is where one of the most difficult steeplechases on the Euro-pean continent takes place – the Great Pardubice Steeplechase. During the year it is possible to make a tour around the course and stables with a guide.

29Horses Gingerbread

Pardubice gingerbreadThe tradition of gingerbread making in Pardubice dates back to as early as the 16th century. The real boom in gingerbread making started at the beginning of the 20th century. Thanks to this boom, gingerbread became an inseparable symbol of Pardubice, Several companies were founded in Pardubice and they employed the best specialists in making honey and marzipan gingerbread. Their products found favour with connoisseurs in Bohemia and abroad. The tradition of gingerbread making has been preserved until today and gingerbread has, for many generations, been the most traditional souvenir from Pardubice. Pardubice gingerbread makers can make everything from gingerbread hearts right up to a gingerbread cottage! Simply everything you can think of.

kunětická hora CastleThe Kunětická hora Castle (Kunětice Mountain Castle) is a  natural, dominant feature of the region. Since the very beginning of its exist-ence, the castle was no doubt a royal castle and an important strate-gic point in eastern Bohemia. It was Captain Diviš Bořek z Miletínka who had the castle built at the beginning of the Hussite Wars. The castle, however, got its monumentality after the reconstruction ordered by the Lords of Pernštejn at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. The castle tower is the highest point in the countryside, offering wonderful views of ponds along the Labe River right up to the Krkonoše Mountains. It is possible to get dropped off close to the Kunětická hora Castle on board the ship “Arnošt z Pardubic” which anchors in Pardubice at the ČEZ Arena. A game park with a pair of majestic bisons, a  small deer herd, magnificent moufflons and wild boars adorns the area below the castle.

PřeloučPřelouč is the oldest town in the Pardubicko region. As early as the end of the 11th century, the town was owned by the monastery located in nearby Opatovice nad Labem. At that time, the brothers of St. Benedict had a Romanesque church of St. Jacob built, whose foundations can still be seen today. The town acquired its current appearance at the end of the 19th century when the Civic Savings Bank was built there. The building dominates Přelouč square.
