Pastor’s Column REJOICE

The prophetic writings we hear in today’s scriptures call us to rejoice and celebrate the goodness of God. Zephaniah, Isaiah, Saint Paul, and John the Baptist in Luke’s Gospel all follow the rich tradition of the Biblical prophets, a tradition that reaches full expression in Jesus. The prophets warn that human failings have truly disastrous consequences. All are summoned to repent, and to change their lives. Today we hear the Good News that God’s gracious love exceeds and overcomes all human corruption. God has not given up on us. Indeed, God keeps pursuing us, and eagerly seeks to reconcile with us. God’s initiative to set the world aright culminates with Jesus, whose coming John the Baptist announces. John’s prophetic message summons us to join in God’s reconciling work, by living generously and justly in our daily lives. As we rejoice in God’s grace, we then extend the fruits of this grace to all.

As we prepare for Christmas, I pray that Our Lord Jesus Christ will come into your life with His blessings of peace, love and hope. The seasons of Advent and Christmas are full of memories and sentiment for all of us. May this year’s celebration of the season add happy and treasured experiences of God’s grace and human love to your remembrances?

Prayer of the Week Second Sunday of Advent

Almighty and merciful God,

may no earthly undertaking hinder those who set out in haste to meet your Son,

but may our learning of heavenly wisdom gain us admittance to his company.

Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

God, for ever and ever.

Important Updates when Receiving Communion Gluten Free Hosts: For those communicants who require gluten-free (GF) hosts, please let the celebrant, usually our pastor, Monsignor Hopkins, (or visiting priest) know that you will be in his communion line, at the end of the line. An usher may be available to help you.

Receiving the Host on the tongue: For those communicants who receive the Body of Christ on the tongue, please receive the Host from the celebrant, Monsignor Hopkins in most instances, by using his communion line to receive; especially in our current Covid state, please position yourself at the end of the celebrant's Communion line, to receive the Host. If you cannot come to the Altar for Communion: If you come to mass and cannot come to the altar in the Communion line we suggest:

• if you are attending mass alone, let an usher know or if you know a Eucharistic Minister, tell them that you need the celebrant or a Eucharistic Minister to come to your pew at the end of Communion.

• if you have a companion or family member who will receive Communion at the altar, they can inform Monsignor Hopkins/or visiting priest or the Eucharistic Minister as they receive the Host. Either one will be happy to bring the Host to your pew.

Our church has a petition book where you can write in a special prayer intention for the living, seriously ill or for any family crisis. The written petitions are remembered at mass during the Prayer of the Faithful as we respond, “Lord, hear our prayer” to the intercessions. Please use this opportunity to include your family and community in our prayers.

Have you left something behind? Our ushers can assist you in showing you where we keep unclaimed items. Or you may simply check the black basket under the table at the entrance of church. As a gentle reminder, we occasionally empty the basket when it is filled.

Religious Education Dear Religious Education families, Happy third Sunday of Advent! Our students are preparing for our little Christmas pageant on December 19 as well as the birth of our Lord. The focus of the Gospel Weeklies this weekend is the teachings of John the Baptist: to share what we have, especially with those who don’t have, and to treat others fairly. How can your family pave the way for Jesus by putting these ideas into practice? In His service, Jessie

December 12th @ 2 p.m.

All are Welcome!

Catch Some Movie Classics There’s still time to catch some classic movies, which have been evaluated by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops according to artistic merit and moral suitability: It's a Wonderful Life (1946) The Bells of St. Mary's (1945) Come to the Stable (1949) White Christmas (1954) A Christmas Story (1983) The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) The Polar Express (2004) Christmas with the Kranks (2004) The Nativity Story (2006)

Thank you for your continued generosity to the parish as part of your gift to God for the

good things God has given you.

Keep Christ the Center of Christmas

To remind travelers of the true meaning of the season, we shall have an outdoor crib in the front of the archives building

Rt. 100 and 141. The figures of Jesus, Mary & Joseph have been obtained from St. Peter’s Cathedral. Perhaps you could put up a nativity scene when decorating your lawn this season. Imagine what could happen if people saw nativity scenes all over town proclaiming the birth of the King.
