Bishop Fabbro's Statement on Easter Sunday, April 21

“Along with the rest of the world, I learned this morning of the shocking and cruel terror attacks in Sri Lanka. Easter Sunday is our most holy day, a joyful day that has turned to tears for the innocents who have been injured and killed. These deliberate assaults were not just against our brothers and sisters but on everyone who values life, love, and peace. Together with Pope Francis, and on behalf of the faithful of the Diocese of London, I condemn these acts of hatred and express our sorrow for the victims and their families. “These attacks were made on Easter Sunday, the day we proclaim Christ’s victory over death and sin. Let us join in prayer with all believers and people of good will, asking God to deliver us from every evil. May God grant peace in our days, and may we redouble our efforts to live out Christ’s commandment to love one another as He loved us.”

A Message from Deacon John God’s Coffee A group of alumni, established in their careers, got together with their old university professor. Talk soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a pot of coffee and an assortment of cups. Some were plastic, some were glass or ceramic, some were plain and some were fancy looking. When they were sitting with their coffee the professor said, “I notice that all the expensive cups were taken and that you left the plain and cheap ones alone”. While it is normal to want only the best for yourselves; that is also the source of your problems and stress. Be assured that the cup you have chosen adds nothing to the quality of the coffee. It is just fancier and more expensive looking. What you really wanted was coffee, not the cup. Life is like the coffee. The jobs, money and position in life are like the cups. They are just tools to go through life. They do not define the quality of life. Our faith and our belief in God define life. By concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee that God provides us.

News from our Diocese

Bishop's Dinner for London & Surrounding Communities The Eleventh Annual Bishop's Dinner for London & Surrounding Communities will be held on Wednesday, June 12 at the London Convention Centre. This annual event gathers our community with Bishop Fabbro in a “Celebration of Faith, Friendship and Charity” to raise vital funds for Vocations London and St. Peter's Seminary. This year we welcome three-time Juno nominee Emm Gryner with her band. For tickets or sponsorship information, please email Mrs. Frances Barnard at [email protected] or phone 519-432-1414 or 1-888-548-9649, ext. 255.

World Day of Prayer for Vocations This year, World Day of Prayer for Vocations will be on Sunday, May 12. The purpose of this day is to publically fulfill the Lord's instruction to, "Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). You can find many resources to promote this day in your families, schools and parishes at www.worlddayofprayerforvocations.com Avow – Vocation Discernment Groups for Catholic Women Every woman is called to make a gift of herself in love. Discovering the form the gift will take is the art of discernment. Avow is a small group for Catholic women, ages 18 to 35, who gather for heart-to-heart conversation and study as they embark on the journey of discernment together. Avow is not a program to recruit or convince you of your vocation; rather it is designed to create an atmosphere of freedom and openness for the authentic pursuit of the Father’s will. Groups are guided by the discernment principles of St. Ignatius of Loyola. In London & Surrounding Regions: Meetings are held every third Wednesday of the month. Please contact Marjorie Braatz at [email protected]. In Windsor-Essex & Surrounding Regions: Meetings are held monthly. Please contact Maureen at the Madonna House, Windsor at [email protected]. Quo Vadis – Vocation Discernment Groups for Catholic Men Quo Vadis is Latin for “where are you going?” Is Jesus calling me to be a Catholic priest? It’s not an easy question to answer. It takes prayer and study to discover your true vocation. Quo Vadis is a discernment group of men, ages 18 to 35, who love Jesus Christ and His Church, and who are willing to talk with other like-minded men about their future. The group meetings aren’t meant to convince you that priesthood is your vocation. You could very well be called to marriage or to another vocation, but openness to God's will is the goal of these groups. Contact Fr. Patrick Bénéteau at [email protected] or 519-432-1824 ext. 204, for meeting times and locations or see the bulletin board poster for more details. A suggested prayer for vocations during the month of May: Mary Most Holy, as a young woman living in obscurity you nurtured with loving care the Word of God made flesh. Please protect and accompany all young men and women, especially from our parish, who are called to a vocation to the priesthood or religious life. Amen. Employment Opportunity CCLC, the Catholic Christian Leadership Camp of the Diocese of London, is seeking the following positions: Summer Leadership Camp Coordinator, Youth Leadership Inclusion Support Staff, Outdoor Learning Coordinator, Day Camp Coordinator, and Day Camp Counsellor.

Details for these and other positions are available at www.dol.ca/employment.

Catholic Education Week, May 5 to 10, 2019

As we approach Catholic Education Week, we are reminded that publicly funded Catholic education is a call to service. Regardless of our position or our responsibilities within Catholic education, our role is a call, birthed in our Baptism to bring the saving message of Jesus Christ into the lives of those students whom it is our privilege to serve. This year’s Catholic Education Week theme is, “Living as Joyful Disciples.” The theme for CEW 2019 was inspired by three sources: Renewing the Promise, The Pastoral Letter on Catholic Education from the Bishops of Ontario: Gaudete et exsultate, the Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis on the Call to Holiness; and Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment, the October 2018 Synod of Bishops. Mindful of the Synod on Youth, the theme and sub-themes are very much directed to the young people in our schools, especially in their growth in holiness and their formation as disciples of Christ through the discernment of their vocational pathways. In the section of Renewing the Promise entitled, “A Community that Forms Joyful Disciples,” we read, “Our Catholic schools help to form joyful disciples as hearts and minds are opened to the transforming love of God and to the flame of faith in action. On a daily basis, Catholic schools demonstrate the joy of believing and witness the Good News to the communities that they serve.” The CEW biblical quote is, “Although you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy.” Sincerely in Catholic Education, Brian O’Sullivan, MA, Ed., D. Director of Catholic Education, OCSTA

Dear Cherished Volunteers of the Catholic Family of Parishes of Norfolk: Called Gifted and Sent was created in 2001 and hereby revised for the fourth time by the Bishop and his advisors in order to create a way to screen supervise and accompany volunteers in any ministry within our churches. It was created to protect the rights and responsibilities of all parties involved so that as a faith filled community we could protect the vulnerable we serve legally, ethically, spiritually and morally. It is also a way to create a diocesan-wide consistent program of records. It allows us to engage our parishioners in their call to serve those in need while remembering that we are ALL accountable to care WELL for others. I have already begun the process of contacting anyone in high risk ministry first. This would include the pastoral care team, the Summer Bible Camp staff, the St Vincent de Paul, the Sunday School teachers, those who do home visits to the nursing homes and/or hospital, and those who count Sunday collection. Each time I contact you it is based upon what is found or not found in the parish files. I have no other way of knowing what used to exist. I know for some this is new, or for some they are surprised that there are updates needed. Please be patient as we work through this together. If you have any questions feel free to call me at 519-582-1312 or 519-426-0887 or email me at [email protected]. Kathryn Heemskerk, Pastoral Minister
