THIS WEEK’S THIS WEEK’S THIS WEEK’S SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTSPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTSPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS S S & SCHEDULES & SCHEDULES & SCHEDULES
“HALACHA OF THE WEEK” BY: RABBI OBI‐WAN KENOBI
May I fulfill the mitzvah of Mishloach Manot by sending it with my personal robot? Some authorities understand that the purpose of the mitzvah is to increase our goodwill towards each other on Purim itself. Therefore, mishloach manos should be sent, or at least received, on Purim. It is customary to send it by a shaliach to keep the recipient guessing as to who the sender is, thereby allowing them precious time to re‐gift a previously‐ received mishloach manot to avoid embarrassment by realizing that you didn’t send to that person because you forgot from last year and someone (not mentioning names, it would be lashon hora) threw out last year’s list. But does a robot have kavannah to act as a shaliach? Since most children are utilized as shlichim for Mishloach Manot without a clue who they are giving it to, but whose job is to look cute in costume, kal v’chomer we can hold that kavanna does not apply, so that robots can be used but only if they look somewhat like children and were specifically told to whom to give the mishloach manot. W hy do we drink four cups of wine at the Seder? Besides the well known connection to the four Biblical terms of redemption(from Shemos 6), The Maharal puts forth another significance
to the number four. First, he suggests that the three primary symbols of the Seder – those that are mandated by the Torah itself – are (1) The Pesach sacrifice, (2) Matza, and (3) Maror. These three symbols correspond to our three patriarchs, Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov. (1) The Pesach sacrifice corresponds to Yaakov, as Yaakov is known as “Israel, the scattered sheep” (Jer. 50:17). The Midrash even cites this verse to explain why Yaakov didn’t want to be buried in Egypt. He argued: I am likened to a sheep, while those heathen Egyptians are likened to a donkey. The Torah states that a first‐born donkey may be redeemed by a sheep, and I do not wish to act as the redemption for the Egyptians. (2) Matza corresponds to Avraham, in that he separated himself from all spiritually “leavening” influences in his society. Chametz represents this bad element in an assimilationist society that Avraham alone was able to avoid. He is thus likened to the matza which is separated from all chametz. (3) Maror corresponds to Yitzchak, because Yitzchak is associated with suffering. Yitzchak suffered toward the end of his life with blindness, and, as our sages tell us, a blind person is almost considered to be dead. As a matter of fact, the Midrash says that Yitzchak was the first person in all of Tanach to go through physical suffering during his lifetime, and this was at his own request. He felt that man’s suffering in this world would alleviate any outstanding stern judgments held against him. These are the three special foods eaten at the Seder. Next, Maharal observes that wine is normally drunk at a meal to help the food go down palatably; it makes whatever you are eating more pleasurable and easier to swallow and digest. In this sense, wine comes as a rectifier, a completion of the food. Liquid
is also a more refined substance than solid foods, and thus represents something more transcendent and spiritual. With this is mind, if the three foods correspond to the three Patriarchs, then the four cups must correspond to the four Matriarchs, Sara, Rivka, Rachel and Leah. There must be some reminiscence of our Matriarchs at the Seder, because according to the Gemara (T.B. Sota 11b), it was only in the merit of the righteous women of that time that our ancestors were redeemed from Egypt. Wine is a perfect symbol for the righteous woman, based on the verse, “Your wife is like fruitful vine in the recesses of your home” (Psalms 128:3). The Maharal says that the vine represents the woman’s steadfastness and resistance to assimilation, as the Midrash (Tanchuma Vayishlach) states that all trees can be grafted to another species except the grape vine, which rejects all other species. What the Maharal does not detail, however, is how the four Matriarchs correspond to the four cups in the same way that he detailed as such for Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov corresponding to Matza, Maror and Pesach. Allow me to extrapolate a bit on the Maharal and suggest the following: (1) The first cup is for Kiddush and precedes the Magid section of the Hagada, wherein we relate the story of the Exodus. The lives of Avraham and Sara, according to the Ramban, were actually a portent for the entire Egyptian exile and subsequent exodus. This is why they had to go down to Egypt during a famine, just as Yaakov would with his family many years hence. Sara was taken by Pharaoh in the same way that Israel was subjugated by Pharaoh. Later, Sara, the barren, old woman miraculously gave birth in her old age. This, too, is a foreshadowing of Israel’s miraculous salvation and birth as a nation upon their Exodus. (2) The second cup is drunk right before we begin Shulchan Arech, the Seder meal. This is reminiscent of Rivka, in that she prepared special foods for her son Yaakov to bring to Yitzchak in order to receive the blessings due to him. In the same way, we use the special foods of Pesach, the matza, the maror, and – in Temple times – the Paschal offering, to
elevate ourselves up to Hashem on this evening and be worthy of His blessings. (3) The third cup is drunk right after birkas hamazon (bensching) and right before we open the door for Eliyahu and recite “Sh’foch Chamascha, (Pour Out Thy Wrath)” a prayer asking Hashem to wreak vengeance against our persecutors so that we may ultimately usher in a future era of peace and prosperity for our people. This corresponds to Rachel, in that in Jeremiah 31:14 we read that Rachel cries for her children, refusing to be consoled for her children who have suffered and gone into exile. This cry of “Pour Out Thy Wrath” is a pained cry of Rachel’s children echoing her cries. But later in this section, we recite the Hallel, not only for our past victories, but also because we look forward to the future when our redemption will be complete, and “your children will return to their border.” (4) Finally, we drink the last cup right before Nirtza, the portion of the Seder which is really merely addenda to the actual the Seder, but which contains much mystical content about our future redemption, disguised in the form of folk songs that the whole family can enjoy. As a preface to Nirtza, we recite: “Just as we have merited a Seder, so may we merit the Paschal offering. O Pure One in Heaven above, Restore the congregation that is beyond number; speedily lead those who are offshoots of Your stock as free men to Zion, joyously. Next year in Jerusalem!” Leah was always considered to be ancillary to the mainstay of Yaakov’s house, Rachel. Similarly, Nirtza is this supplement to the Haggada. And yet, it contains the most poignant and profound portents of our future redemption, and provides us with hope and inspiration for the future – “Next year in Jerusalem!” Similary, Leah’s progeny, Yehuda, is the forebear of the Messiah who will lead us back to Zion, joyously. How central a role do our Matriarchs play in our celebration of Pesach – both our ancient Matriarchs and the modern‐day matriarchs of each and every home. May you have an uplifting Pesach that will lead us back Zion, joyously!
Rabbi Daniel Korobkin

A PESACH MESSAGE FROM OUR RAV
FROM THE PRESIDENT’S PEN
W ith every Quarterly bulletin the President usually provides updates to the kehilla on the various ongoing events and initiatives. That is not such a simple thing to do as we are experiencing an unparalleled time at BAYT when it seems that there is a guest speaker or a large scale social event every week. By the time of this printing, over a one month period, we will have hosted Rabbi Yaakov Horowitz, Dr. Mordechai Kedar, and Rabbi Shlomo Riskin as scholars in our shul. Where else but at BAYT! Our Programming Committee created an expertly planned Games Night and a Comedy Night. Where else but BAYT! Tens of our members have either hosted or taught at the well attended Leil Limud organized by Rabbi Scot Berman. Where else but BAYT! Our Daf Yomi and Wednesday Night BAYT medrash programs, Sugya and Parsha shiurim are full. Where else but BAYT! Where else but BAYT will you find Rabbi Daniel and Rebbetzin Karen Korobkin! They continue to work tirelessly on behalf of our kehilla on both a community scale and one on one. We thank them and pray that G‐d grants them the strength and wisdom to continue to guide and nurture us for many years to come. I am pleased to inform the kehilla that our new informative and fully integrated web site is up and running. Not only is www.bayt.ca loaded with information, but now members can securely access their accounts, make donations, reserve tickets for events and for the first time ever at BAYT, renew their membership online. We owe a tremendous hakarat hatov to our Technology Committee; David Lithwick, Maury Gilman, and Elie Kochman who have volunteered countless hours and given of their expertise.
After an exhaustive search lead by Simi Grosman and Dov Klein, along with Rabbi Mordechai Torczyner and Pam Brenman, we recently hired Mordechai Bookbinder to be our new Executive Director. Mordechai brings a creative energy that is backed by many years experience as a Shul’s Executive Director along with years of working in the Jewish community at Federation. The Board has revamped the role of Executive Director and while Mordechai will be our shuls Senior Administrator, he is also tasked with bui ld ing membersh ip , improv ing membership services, fundraising, creating a sound financial footing, and marketing BAYT within the community. That is no small task! We wish Mordechai hatzlacha rabbah and welcome him, his wife Erika, and children to our community. There is so much more going on, but to find out those details you will have to read our weekly bulletin and listen to my Shabbat announcements! Finally, I am often asked what I enjoy most about being the President of BAYT. True, I do get to sit beside the Rabbi in shul and of course, I have the best parking spot as well...but the most satisfying part of the job is being involved with all of the wonderful davening, learning, social and educational programming, chessed, and charitable work that our amazing Executive Committee, Board of Directors, and volunteers plan, manage and simply put, ‘get done’ at BAYT. As well, none of this would happen without our wonderful office and maintenance staff: Leslie Lewis, Sylvia Abbou, Ron Fischer, Sarah Talkins, Ilona Meron, Karen Zilberberg, Ted, Eugene, and Lev. Kol HaKavod to you all. On behalf of Susan and myself, Chag Purim Sameach and a Happy and Kosher Pesach. Make BAYT your home,
Harley

T he Executive DIrector, coming to shul one morning, spotted one of his wealthier members of the congregation, and settled‐down into the seat next to him. “Good Shabbos Reb Yid,” the Director started. “You know, when I entered the
shul this morning, I noticed that the front door was mostly off its hinge and could fall at any moment...” “I know, I know,” replied the member. “And when I entered the sanctuary, I saw that there was a new leak in the roof, which, if isn’t repaired, will result in substantial ceiling and floor damage...” “I know, I know,” responded the member. “And moreover, our next to last Sefer Torah was found to have a problem and will need repair, because if we don’t‐‐” “Look,” the wealthy member sharply interrupted. “I know what you’re getting at and hear where you are going. I need you to understand something too. My daughter’s university tuition is $25,000 a year. My mother‐in‐law’s nursing home fees are more than $4,500 per month. And my own wife, she should live and be well, her medical therapy and medicine are thousands each month. Now, understand, if I can say “No” to them....” The above illustrates, admittedly with a certain degree of humour, the stereotypical view of the member‐Executive Director relationship. BAYT has changed the rules of the game. Some of the differences you may notice will be that I may be out of the office. A lot. I am making it a point to get to meet people ‐ members, organizations and various community stake‐holders, and asking: What do people think of BAYT? How are we perceived? How should we be perceived? How could we increase our level of member engagement? What are members looking for from their shul? I am asking these, and many more, questions in order to better understand how to help BAYT to grow and evolve to meet and anticipate the needs of our dynamic community.
Having been asked to grow the financial resources, the membership and the programming of BAYT, I ask myself the question: “What is the best way to accomplish this?” The answer that comes to my mind is to grow the relationships upon which our community is founded. After all, the relationships are the core building block of the community, so to grow BAYT means to focus on building and growing authentic caring, mutually beneficial relationships ‐ everything else will follow. Every visiting speaker comments on how impressed with the diversity and vibrancy they are within our shul. BAYT is a powerhouse within the Synagogue world, but I believe that is has the opportunity to be much more. I believe that it can become a beacon within the World Jewish Community and become a world leader and role model for the ideal Jewish Community. That is an ambitious goal worth striving for! As my efforts start to intensify, I look forward to continuing to meet with you all. If I have not yet had the chance to greet you personally, please be certain to come over to me and introduce yourself. I appreciate the warmth and wel‐come that I have enthusiastically received to date and antici‐pate many more opportunities to work with everyone at BAYT. Wishing you, your family and loved ones a freilechen Purim and chag kosher v’sameach,
Mordechai Bookbinder
A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

W hen I asked a few people what I should talk about in the bulletin, I was told by everyone “Rich remember… less is more”. That’s just not sitting right with me for some reason. The Youth Department has been busy with our ongoing Shabbos programs, special events and our weekday activities. The Girl Guides, Brownies and Boy Scout programs have been a tremendous success, as is our weekly Boys Floor Hockey league. The Father & Son Learning Program (Motzei Shabbos) with Rabbi Biegeleisen is drawing a big crowd and all the participants are enjoying learning and pizza each week. I like to look back and think about all the kids and new participants who are now part of the exciting youth program. (What’s strange is...I like to reminisce with people I don’t know!?). We have started some wonderful new programs such as the “Youth Book Club” and “Bubby & Me” with Morah Mindy. We look forward to Snow Tubing on Family Day weekend (Friday Feb. 15th), our Purim Palooza after Megillah reading (Feb. 23rd ) Toronto Marlies Day (March 10th), Youth Pre Pesach Fashion Sale (March 10th), wonderful Chol Hamoed Pesach events, Blue Jay Day (April 21st) and our Lunch ‘n’ Learn program. We will also be having a great Teen Night Out event, a Babysitting course, Teen Oneg Shabbat, Sports Day, Youth Banquet…and a lot more. A special mid‐year thank you and yasher koach to all of our wonderful leaders and especially to our volunteers who give so much of their valuable time to the youth program. I’d like to welcome Mordechai Bookbinder as the BAYT’s new Executive Director. He and I had a discussion on how to cope with the stresses of modern and everyday life. Mordechai wanted to offer a course in time management. Once I heard the course was announced, I asked him what time the course starts. He replied: “ Oh…Fiveish, Sixish”. In my ongoing adventure in bringing you the wonderful and witty things kids say, I have a few new ones to share with you. In the grade 1‐3 boys program, they were learning brachot for foods. I asked one boy who was new to the program, “Do you know the prayer for all foods?” He said “ I don’t have to…my Mom is a good cook”.
Then there was this energetic 7 year old who was learning about things people have in common. The group leader asked her,” What do you think your Mom and Dad have in common”? She thought for a split second and said…”I know they BOTH don’t want any more kids”. The last story I have to share with you was on a Sunday when a wedding was going to take place in the Shul a few hours later. One little boy from the Sunday Funday program said to me, ”Why does the Kalah always wear white”? To make things simple, I said “White is the colour of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life”. He then said, “then why is the Chatan wearing black?” I’m enjoying meeting all the kids and parents and planning activities with everyone in mind. As in life, some days are calm...and some days are hectic. Some days you’re the dog…and some days you’re the hydrant. But as long as you enjoy what you do, and have a great outlook on life, it will always shine through and make every day special. I do enjoy having the kids ask me so many interesting questions. As Pesach is just around the corner, it reminded me that I was once asked why there are so many questions in the Hagadah. The explanation is simple. By telling the story of our Exodus from Egypt in question and answer form, we attempt to pique the interest of all those at the seder. When we keep everyone engaged and engrossed in the story, the seder will be more meaningful. The lesson we can learn from the Pesach seder and the mah nishtana, is that it isn’t enough simply to teach our children – we have to engage them as well. On behalf of Elana, Zac and Maya, I wish everyone a wonderful Purim and a Chag Kasher V’sameyach.

BAYT Programming Committee
Following our successful August tour of the McMichael Collection led by docent Miriam Webb, the Programming Committee has been hard at work this past Fall and Winter, providing great opportunities for BAYT members to enjoy a variety of social, recreational, artistic and cultural events, (as well as each other’s company) inside and outside of the shul.
Our Book Group, organized by Miriam Webb and Sharon Green, continues to meet quarterly to discuss new books. We are pleased to have offered Bowling Night at Bathurst Bowlerama, the Buffalo “Cultural Appreciation” (aka Bills game) trip, our Third Annual Ma’aleh Film Festival, our “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” Games Night and Melava Malka hosted by Andy “Regis” Gelberger, and our Live Comedy Night which featured David Kilimnick and introduced our very own improv group “The Shtickmen”. For those who didn’t for some reason come to Comedy Night, “The Shtickmen” are Michael Lebovic, Jordan Max, Marty Rosen, Mark Saffer, Elliot Spiegel, Kenny Stollon and Marcel Strigberger. Next stop, Vegas!
On Motzei Shabbos, March 2nd, we will be screening “Follow Me”, the powerful, award‐winning biographical documentary of Yonatan Netanyahu, z”l, hero of the 1976 raid on Entebbe. The film will be introduced by Rabbi Korobkin, and we have a special guest, CHAT ’75 Alumnus Prof. Asaf Zohar, who served in Yoni's unit and will offer his personal reflections.
This event is being co‐sponsored by TannenbaumCHAT and the Centre for Israel & Jewish Affairs (CIJA). Tickets are now on sale through the shul’s website (the early bird rate of only $10 applies until February 18, 2013, $15 per person afterwards.) Please join us for what promises to be a memorable evening. We also have a few other ideas we’re cooking up for Spring and Summer, but we aren’t ready to share details just yet. Stay tuned by watching your weekly bulletin. Please take a minute to say “thank you” to our dedicated volunteers on the Programming Committee – Tobey Crandell, Andy Gelberger, Earle Glicksman, Eddie Jesin, Agnes Miller, and Miriam Webb. And if you have any programming ideas, whether for an event, series or a group/club, send them to [email protected]. We’re always looking for fresh ideas.

THE BAYT GOES BILINGUAL AND MULTICULTURAL! Purimshpiel from our very own Jeffrey C. Silver
Ever since his coming to Toronto, it’s been rumoured that you can take Rabbi Korobkin out of Hollywood but you can’t take Hollywood out of the Rabbi (no Rabbi, the kubba that Bali Laffa had has nothing to do with Cuba Gooding Jr.). However, after high level meetings in Ottawa this past Chanukah with Prime Minister Harper, that is all about to change and so is the BAYT. In return for a multimillion dollar federal grant, the BAYT is going bilingual. Effective immediately, the following is taking place:
Rabbi Korobkin is now Le Grand Rabbin de BAYT. The choir is enrolling in French immersion.
Harley will be making announcements in French and English.
All functions must serve poutine, biere and peameal bacon and Luigi will now be known as Monsieur Pierre.
The Perlis Hall is now the Salle de Reception Charles de Gaulle. The Brotherhood is the Fraternite. Go With The Flo is now Vien Avec La Flo. Given the more laid back French culture, simchas may now start 60 seconds late.
250 Hebrew/French Artscroll siddurs have been ordered. The office will answer the telephone in French. The Rabbi’s hero will now be a French Canadian hockey player instead of Captain Kirk. Our past chairman from France, Monsieur Rucker, will be honoured with the title of Chairman Emeritus
Oh Canada will be sung in the bilingual version. And in turn for another federal grant, the BAYT is also going multicultural:
Rosh Hashana services will now be held during the Chinese New Year. The office will offer services in Mandarin, Cantonese and Punjabi.
The Megillah will also be read in Farsi.
The Rambam will be learned in Spanish.
The Rebbetzin’s parsha cake will feature a famous building every week such as the Eiffel Tower.

PURIM/PESACH MITZVOS
PAGE 14
THE MITZVOS OF PURIM (ESPECIALLY MATANOS L’EVYONIM) Purim is one of our most cherished holidays. While we all look forward to the celebration of Purim, we should remember that the day should also be devoted to the performance of four distinct mitzvos instituted by our Sages: 1) Hearing the reading of the Megillah ‐‐ this is to be done twice on Purim, once during the evening, and once during the day. This mitzvah applies equally to men and women, and so we will be having multiple Megillah readings throughout the day (see Purim schedule). 2) Mishloach Manos or Food Gift Parcels ‐‐ it is actually a mitz‐vah for each per‐son ‐‐ male and female alike ‐‐ to give at least one parcel of food, containing at least two ready to eat foods, to another person (other than your spouse; also note that we do not give Mishloach Manos to mourners). Our Sisterhood has done an amazing job this year arranging beautiful Mishloach Manos baskets that will be delivered on your behalf. To fulfill the mitzvah in the optimal fashion, it is recommended that in addition to using the Sisterhood service, you give your own food parcel to at least one person. 3) Matanos L’Evyonim or Gifts to the Poor ‐‐ This means giving at least the value of a half of a loaf of bread each to at least two poor people on Purim day. More on this below. 4) Seudas Purim or Purim Festive Dinner ‐‐ Having a special festive meal sometime on the day of Purim. See the
enclosed about the shul’s Seuda, which should be one of the highlights of the year. As you can see, Purim does not have to be an expensive holiday. However, Maimonides
(Yad, Hilchos Megillah 2:17) makes a very strong point of saying that out of all your expenditures on Purim, it is best to spend the most on Matanos L’Evyonim: “For there is no greater or nicer simcha than gladdening the hearts of the poor, as well as orphans , widows and strangers . One resembles the Divine Presence when doing so.” This means that if you are going to spend a significant amount on food parcels to friends, we encourage you to spend at least as much on making the poor happy on Purim. We will attempt to distribute the majority of these monies to the needy in our own community (if you know of anyone who is in need, please notify me discreetly). Please send your cheque, payable to “Beth Avraham Yoseph Congregation of Toronto” in time for it to reach the shul well before Purim. If you prefer, you may donate via credit card and indicate that your donation is for the annual Matanos L’Evyonim campaign. Thank you and tizku l’mitzvos.
MAOS CHITTIM APPEAL Unfortunately, it is necessary for the shul to provide throughout the year for a number of members of our community who aren’t able at the moment to cover their basic living expenses. I’m sure you know first‐hand the huge cost of making Pesach, so the needs of the lower‐income families in our community are that much greater this time of year. Please help those in our community have a truly joyous chag by contributing to our Maos Chittim appeal. Please send your cheque, payable to “Beth Avraham Yoseph Congregation of Toronto.” The sooner we receive the funds, the sooner we can make our distributions for those who need to go shopping for Yom Tov. If you prefer, you may donate via credit card and indicate that your donation is for the annual Maos Chittim campaign. Thank you again and tizku l’mitzvos.

A MESSAGE FROM SISTERHOOD
Every day has its challenges. Today was no different as I woke up to a heavy snow fall and didn’t remember how to work the snow plough. My glasses suddenly fell to pieces and I had run out of decaf coffee! “Oh dear” I thought “How will it get bet‐ter?” No problem, I turned up at the BAYT office and the coffee was immediately provided and my glasses were fixed. I was told not to worry about the snow, it would melt as the temperatures were going to rise. I spend a great deal of time in the office, more than I would like, but it comes with the Sisterhood territory, and while I’m there I get to see what is going on behind the scenes. I have grown to respect the ladies behind the desk and appreciate all of what they do as part of their work, as well as a great deal of the extra services that aren’t in the job description. Next time you call the office, say hello, ask who you are speaking to and how their day is going – believe me it will make a difference to them and to you! Being a good President means surrounding yourself with amazing volunteers who get the job done and make you look good. The Purim Project once again has come and gone but not without a great deal of work on the part of four amazing young women who have juggled their work schedules, home demands and this major Sisterhood fundraiser. My thanks go to Miriam Klein, Yudit Levy, Amy Stopnicki and Sharon Woolf for their enormous contributions to the project’s success. To all those who gave their time to pack and deliver the over six hundred bags to our community. My thanks also goes to those of you who supported this project. The funds raised go to many projects throughout the Shul including the Mikveh, young adults, seniors programming, chessed and much more. As we move towards Pesach, Shavuos and then the summer months (yes, they are within our grasp) Sisterhood is looking towards the future and actively redefining its role within the BAYT. Our women are now participating in the governance of the shul and we are all juggling our careers, with the many other areas of our lives. The Sisterhood has identified three areas of engagement. They include 1) Chesed activities, 2) relevant programming for the women of our shul and 3) fundraising to support underfunded areas within the BAYT. We would like you all to play a role in promoting our mandate. I look forward to hearing from you at [email protected] or give me a call and let’s do coffee!
