Asking for money isn't easy. It isn't easy for the homeless on the street. And it certainly isn't easy for synagogues and other nonprofits to ask for the money they need to do their work. Our Torah reading, Terumah, gives a hint how to do this. God tells Moses to ask the Israelites to take up an offering. The ask, it seems, should come not from Moses, but from our peers. And for the Israelites themselves to ask their friends and neighbours might not have been easy. But it was authentic. If a neighbour or friend says to us, "I personally believe in this cause, and I hope you will consider a contribution," that resonates. We are happy to give to causes that matter. We all want hunger and disease to be vanquished. We all want to support Israel and the Jewish community. We all want to support the local and greater communities we live in. Provided, that is, that all these causes can make the case that they are doing good and im- portant work, work that we believe in. So, too, with the synagogue. Our members are exceptionally generous in their support, because Beth-El is a cause that we believe in. Our work is authentic. And we need to grow the work that we do. We need to grow our commitment to Jewish life, to Jewish learning, to Jewish living, to outreach. And as we do, we will also be able to grow the support that our members and friends provide, because Beth-El's vibrancy will resonate. Beth El Book Club!

Come join our very own, newly formed Beth El Book Club!

We will meet monthly in people's homes, and have a cozy chat about a Jewish-themed novel or biography we've all read.

Our first meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at 7:30, at the home of Bettina Schwarzman.

Our first book is Dara Horn, A Guide for the Perplexed This is a novel about a software prodigy, Josie Ashkenazi, who has invented an applica-

tion called Geniza, that records everything its users do. On a business trip to Egypt, Josie gets abducted, while her jealous sister back home takes over her life. The book also takes us back one hundred years, as we see Solomon Schechter himself wading about in the Cairo geniza. As if that weren't enough, this novel features a flashback to another four hundred years earlier, as we follow Moses Maimonides, also in Cairo, worrying about the fate of his brother lost at sea.

The novel is available at the Jewish Public Library as well as the Town of Mount Royal Library. It can also be purchased online. (For next to nothing, if you're willing to buy it

second hand.)
