Dear Friends of Orchard Village,

We are pleased to share with you, our valued supporters and partners, key programmatic, financial and organizational highlights of the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014. Orchard Village continues to play an essential role within the community by serving as a valued and worthy partner to families, employers, schools, neighborhoods and fellow service providers. Working together, we help to ensure fulfilling lives for the individuals with developmental challenges under our care. We remain committed to providing our deserving clients with the highest quality support possible.

Orchard Village ended fiscal year 2014 in a solid financial position, with sufficient cash on hand and a growing endowment to allow for growth and enable us to withstand fiscal uncertainties. Once again, Orchard Village successfully navigated the sometimes challenging economic and administrative—even agricultural—climate in Illinois this year: • State funding, essential to our operations, proved in the main steady and reliable. • State bureaus charged with evaluating Orchard Village for accreditation, licensure, certification and quality management gave us extremely and uniformly high marks this year. • The organization’s important role in the community gained further affirmation in the form of generous donations from many individuals and corporations at our fundraising events; new grants from nine foundations; and renewed grants from eight other foundations.• More than a dozen area businesses joined ongoing employer partners of Orchard Village in agreeing to hire individuals with developmental disabilities under our care and guidance. • Tri-annual negotiations with our service union partner were constructive and deemed a success by all involved.• And for the second consecutive growing season, we successfully planted, cultivated and harvested a half-acre urban produce farm on our Skokie campus—a project that is, itself, the seedling of an ongoing, revenue-generating social enterprise for the organization.

The immediate future looks bright for Orchard Village. After a thorough search, the organization has hired a proven executive, Martin (Marty) Oliff, to serve as President & CEO. Marty’s long-tenured experience in nonprofit human services will be instrumental in providing the highest quality of service to our clients while remaining a critical community asset.

As always, we are grateful for the dedication of our staff of nearly 140 full and part-time professionals; our committed and tireless Board of Directors; and the more than 120 loyal volunteers on whom we depend. And we extend our sincere gratitude to the generous donors, grantors and contributors who validate our important work. Thank you for embracing Orchard Village.

With gratitude,

Last year, Orchard Village clients blossomed in many ways. Here are just four examples:

community | growth partnersupportprovider

asset

Victor, Residential and Vocational ServicesVictor, age 32, became an Orchard Village client in 2013 after living with relatives. He is a resident of the Community Integrated Living Arrangement (CILA) home on Oleander Avenue in Niles, one of ten 24-hour supervised residences operated by Orchard Village. Victor loves to follow sports and is a wiz at statistics, standings and schedules. He is participating in sports as well – Special Olympics, the Wednesday night bowling program of the Maine-Niles Association of Special Recreation, the Orchard Village Run/Walk and the adaptive tennis workshops run by the USTA at Orchard Village.Victor currently works at Shore Training Center, a supported employment workshop, but has begun exploratory, pre-vocational tasks (including work on the Farm at Orchard Village) under the guidance of the Vocational staff to determine how his interests and abilities might relate to future competitive employment in the community.

Shawn, Vocational ServicesShawn, 39, has been an Orchard Village client since 1993, when he began working at Dominick’s as a bagger and cart attendant. For 20 distinguished years, he was a valued member of his work team, a familiar face to many store customers and a recipient of numerous accolades for his strong work ethic and outgoing personality. After Dominick’s ceased operations at the end of 2013, Shawn struggled at first to cope with his first period of unemployment in two decades. Working with the supportive Orchard Village Vocational team, he soon found work in the suitable and recognizable environs of a Garden Fresh Market in Northbrook. Shawn is thriving again as an experienced bagger and cart attendant. He loves the new job and is working hard to serve his community and achieve independence.

John, Orchard AcademyJohn, age 21, enrolled at the Academy in 2010. At that time he was very quiet, socially unskilled and disinclined to join in conversation with classmates. With the patient encouragement of faculty and staff, including a speech

therapist and social worker, John began to gain confidence. His job readiness coursework, along with three valuable internships, prepared him for the kind of social interaction required for success in the workplace. Indeed, John recently obtained competitive employment at Walmart while, simultaneously, moving into his own apartment. As his graduation from Orchard Academy approaches, John has been enlivening Monday morning assemblies by asking his peers and staff about their weekends, about computer problems he can help them with, and about movies they’ve seen. Now embarked on an independent life, John has truly found his voice.

Juwairiyah, In-Home ServicesJuwairiyah, a kindergartner, began receiving the services of her Orchard Village Respite Worker in 2013. During their initial weekly interactions she was extremely quiet and aloof. Over time, and with the Respite Worker’s patient guidance, Juwairiyah’s confidence and creativity have grown dramatically. She now jumps right into such activities as kite flying, various art projects, card games (Zingo and Uno are favorites) and her workbooks. She has become mindful about “please” and “thank you” (and politely reminds others when they forget). Her verbal skills have improved and she is quickly

learning and remembering new words. And she loves books and storytelling time. Now when Sunday comes around, her visiting Respite Worker can count on two things: a giant smile and a friendly greeting.

For more than 40 years, Orchard Village has partnered with families and communities to empower people with developmental disabilities to achieve integrated, fulfilling lives. We have been fortunate to enjoy the generous ongoing support of many individuals, businesses, charitable organizations and government entities in our immediate service area and beyond.

We are proud to note that Orchard Village is more than a recipient of support – it is itself a significant and meaningful community provider. Our community-integrated group residences diversify our neighborhoods. Our growing vocational program supplies area businesses with loyal, capable and hard-working employees. In-home services bring much-needed respite, therapeutic and other resources to dozens of family homes. And our Academy prepares young adults to become engaged, productive and informed citizens.

“To whom much is given, much will be required.” We are grateful to have been given the community’s generous support and, in return,

remain committed to providing significant and meaningful contributions to our clients and communities.
