PARTNER AGENCIES NEEDED FOR SNAP OUTREACHSecond Harvest began SNAP (Food Stamp) Outreach over two years ago and has been rapidly expanding our reach ever since. Providing SNAP Outreach through our Partner Agencies provides clients with a personal application experience in what can be an overwhelming process.

In Tennessee, only 47% of senior citizens and 78% of the working poor who are eligible for SNAP ever participate. Leaving a large amount of the eligible population without benefits. SNAP ensures that no one goes hungry when they are facing hard times, that children are given a fair chance at a healthy adulthood, and that senior citizens and veterans can care for themselves.

How Can YOU Help?

We are currently recruiting agencies to partner with us for SNAP Outreach. Your staff and volunteers will assist clients with completing a SNAP application, and then submit it to the Department of Human Services (DHS) Office. Second Harvest will provide complete training for your staff and volunteers, as well as resources and information on the SNAP program.

Why promote SNAP?

• One SNAP application equals 839 meals!• When your clients use SNAP, they may rely less on your agency, alleviating demand.• SNAP provides clients with purchasing power and the chance to buy what they would like

from the grocery.• SNAP helps the local economy. $1.00 spent with SNAP dollars equals about a $1.70 boost in

the economy.• Clients may feel more comfortable applying for SNAP with familiar staff at your agency

than in a county DHS office. You can provide guidance through what can be acomplicated process.

RESOURCES

REGIONAL AND ANNUAL MEETINGS The Annual Partner Agency Conference will be held Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at Second Harvest headquarters in Nashville. Partner Agencies operating food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters are invited to attend. It’s a fun day of trainings, networking, and resource building.

Between now and June, each Agency Relations Manager will plan several Regional Meetings. These meetings will be held in each service area — Southeast, Central, Northeast, West, and Davidson County. All Partner Agencies are asked to participate in their Regional Meeting to receive updates on programming. Invitations for both Annual and Regional Meetings will be emailed soon.

UPCOMING ROUTE CHANGESThis fall, our Camden, Rutherford, and Nashville warehouses will be fully functional. This growth will allow us to visit each county more frequently, often weekly! Recent additions to our transportation fleet will also give us enough flexibility to designate entire semi-trucks to each area, giving us the opportunity to combine both Perishable and Rural Routes into one large delivery. Our rural agencies will benefit by being able to order more frequently and pick-up free, fresh produce and bread at the same time of their delivery. We hope this will improve our service to Partner Agencies and help fulfill the nutritional needs that food insecure families are lacking. Stay tuned for more updates regarding the new route schedule!

AGENCY SPOTLIGHT: COMMUNITY ACTION COMMITTEECommunity Action Committee (CAC) is committed to active outreach ministry in the Sewanee community and beyond. Working with Otey Parish, the School of Theology, volunteers, Chef Rick from the University of the South, St. James, and members of the community, the CAC has a deep and longstanding commitment to their work. CAC operates a food bank from 9-11 a.m. Monday through Friday. The food pantry program is vital in its community. It serves a number of community clients, who are free to stop by anytime and stock up on food and other household supplies. Most of the CAC's food supply comes from Second Harvest, however, community donations are always welcome.

Volunteers can come by any day of the week to stock and organize food, pack grocery bags, and share casual coffee and conversation with clients! The CAC is located on the campus of the University of the South and is blessed to have a great deal of student involvement as well.

The CAC currently maintains a garden at Otey Parish that provides clients with a source of fresh produce. The organization is currently developing a program that will allow CAC clients and community members to come together and learn more about sustainable gardening practices and share any knowledge they may already have! Volunteers are welcome to come during regular office hours to help with weeding, watering, planting, harvesting, etc.!

Second Harvest is honored to partner with Community Action Committee!

Congratulations to Our Daily Bread in Hardin County!

The Hardin County Chamber of Commerce hosted their 22nd Annual Meeting & Distinguished Service Awards Banquet on February 8 at Pickwick Landing State Park Inn. Our Daily Bread Food Ministry in Savannah was awarded the “Going the Extra Mile Service Award.” Our Daily Bread Food Ministry was nominated by the community for the annual award which recognizes those who have made a significant contribution to the area. The organization was created by Finley and Judith Beckham to provide nutritional food assistance for residents of Hardin County. Most notably, the organization is known for the creation of their local “Backpack Program,” a program that sends easy-to-prepare food home with children in the Hardin County School System. Congratulations!!

WHOLE GRAINS 101Grains give us energy and are an essential part of a healthy diet. Pick whole grains over refined ones. Whole grains not only give you more fiber and nutrients but also keep you fuller longer. Eating whole grains may also reduce your risk of diabetes, heart disease, and constipation.

All grains start out as whole grains. Grains are made up of 3 parts: bran, germ, and endosperm. The bran contains most of the fiber and the germ contains a majority of the vitamins and minerals. When grains are processed to refined grains, the bran and germ are typically removed, which strips away most of the grain’s fiber and nutrients.

Some common whole grains include: 100% whole grain breads, 100% whole grain pasta, 100% whole grain cereals, brown rice, barley, corn, popcorn and quinoa. Encourage your clients to pick whole grains by:

1. Highlighting them as a healthier choice or “diabetes friendly”2. Providing samples of whole grains like brown rice or whole-wheat pasta3. Provide recipes using whole grain products
