I t is a great pleasure for me

to welcome all guests from

around the world who will vis-

it the HANNOVER MESSE this year!

Italy has been chosen to be the official

Partner Country of the 2010 HANNO-

VER MESSE. This decision reflects

both the great role that Italy and Ital-

ian enterprises play globally in the field

of industrial technologies and the ex-

traordinary tight economic and trade

relations between Italy and Germany.

Germany is by far the most important

trade partner of Italy: world-wide it is

the first market for our exports and the

first source for our imports. In 2009 –

notwithstanding global recession and

a sharp contraction in international

trade flows – our bilateral exchanges

amounted to almost 91 billion Euros.

I most cordially welcome

all of our guests from this

year’s Partner Country, the

Italian Republic, to HANNOVER

MESSE 2010.

Italy and Germany are traditionally

linked by countless bonds of friend-

ship and trust. Italy’s vibrant econo-

my and the innovative strength of its

enterprises make it one of Germa-

ny’s leading trading partners. High-

tech products from the mechanical

and electrical engineering sector are

at the top of our mutual trade statis-

tics. And both of our nations are also

perennial leaders among the world’s

capital goods manufacturers.

A consistent share of these bilateral

exchanges are made out of industrial

machines, machine tools, industrial

technologies, transport vehicles and

components to be incorporated in fi-

nal products: all this is a concrete proof

of the high degree of integration and

interdependency that Italian and Ger-

man companies have developed over

the last decades.

The merit of this very deep level of

cooperation and mutual, common

interest between Italian and German

manufacturers goes, in my opinion,

to two things.

First of all to the European Single

Market, which provides our enter-

prises with the platform and with the

level-playing field to grow, to become

more internationalised and thus pre-

pares them to better compete in glo-

bal markets.

Secondly, to the outstanding value,

creativity and capacity of innovation

that are key features of Italian and

German firms, in particular of small

and medium enterprises: “Made in

Italy” and “Made in Germany” are ac-

knowledged all over the world as the

best guarantee for quality-products

and high-level technology.

Building upon this basis, the HAN-

NOVER MESSE will provide a sea-

bed for new business contacts, valu-

able information on the state of the

art of new technologies and trends

in industrial sectors and thus send

a signal of optimism for a new path

of robust and sustainable economic

growth.

I therefore express my warmest grati-

tude to the German Government, to

the Government of Lower Saxony and

to the HANNOVER MESSE for pro-

viding this valuable opportunity to

my Country and to Italian companies

and wish all the best to exhibitors and

visitors of the fair.

In short: Italy is particularly predes-

tined to be the Partner Country for

the world’s biggest industrial exhibi-

tion. And Italy is in any case one of

the major exhibitor nations in 2010,

as in previous years.

But a good thing can always become

even better. That’s why I am very

confident that numerous new busi-

ness leads will be generated in Han-

nover and give added momentum to

our already excellent German-Italian

economic relations. It is in this spirit

that I would like to wish all exhibi-

tors and visitors from Partner Coun-

Italy and Germany can provide an ex-

ample for Europe of how renewable

energy can be capable of relaunching

the economy and revitalising the em-

ployment market.

The new technological frontiers of the

green economy will bring ever more

advanced products and services, in

which the ingeniousness and flexibil-

ity of Italian companies will be shown

at their best.

The Italy Pavilion organised by the

Italian Institute for Foreign Trade

(ICE), to be opened by the Italian

President of the Council of Ministers

together with the German Chancellor,

will allow visitors to discover innova-

tion and excellence in the themes of

energy efficiency and yield, the reduc-

tion of acoustic impact and the use of

The Seminars organised by the Insti-

tute, together with the numerous col-

lateral networking and economic and

cultural initiatives, will offer Italian

businessmen the opportunity to estab-

lish or consolidate collaborations with

German companies, while meeting

journalists and opinion makers capa-

ble of providing in-depth information

on the current economic situation and

future development of Germany and

the other countries represented at the

HANNOVER MESSE 2010.

I would like to wish the event every

success and extend my most heart-

felt thanks to the Italian Institute for

Foreign Trade and to all those – busi-

nessmen, architects, curators and art-

ists – who have contributed, under the

Institute’s constant coordination, to

creating this extraordinary event, an

international showcase for our indus-

trial production.

T he Italian Ministry of Eco-

nomic Development has

had the pleasure of ac-

cepting an invitation from our Ger-

man friends for Italy to act as “Partner

Country” in the 2010 HANNOVER

MESSE, the most important industri-

al event in the world.

This invitation bears witness to the

role of our companies in the German

market, and the efficiency of the activi-

ties which we have performed in re-

cent years regarding bilateral econom-

ic relationships. Italy has traditionally

been Germany’s top commercial part-

ner, and also the most important ex-

porter country to host a stand in the

main German trade fair events, while

Italian participation in the Hannover

Trade Fair has always been particular-

ly numerous. However, this invitation

also represents an important recogni-

tion of the vitality and dynamism of our

economic system, considering the fun-

damental theme chosen for this year’s

partnership: sustainable mobility, a

very current theme on both a technical-

engineering and an environmental and

social level.

Economic development requires the

production and use of large volumes

of energy, with the consequent neces-

sity of reducing environmental impact

and preventing irreversible climate

change. This represents both a chal-

lenge and an opportunity to revolu-

tionise the use we currently make of

available resources, designing tech-

in our two countries; our economic

systems are based on a similar indus-

trial model (comprising small and me-

dium-sized enterprises) and on similar

export models.

After the most recent trade fairs, at

which Japan and South Korea were

the guests of honour, this year’s

choice of Italy is a clear reflection of

the attention that Germany pays to It-

aly as a key partner at a time when the

global economy appears to be return-

ing to a growth path, even though this

path is still strewn with obstacles. We

are proud of this, as it further under-

scores the close business relations

our two countries enjoy.

Fully aware of the opportunities that

the Italo-German partnership offers

within the framework of the HANNO-

VER MESSE as well as for strengthen-

ing the political dialogue between the

host and partner countries, the fair

will be opened by Prime Minister Ber-

lusconi and Chancellor Merkel. They

Italy’s participation at the fair will fo-

cus on “sustainable mobility” and – in

addition to appointments at the fair it-

self – includes a broad programme of

seminars, conferences and meetings

which will be of interest to hundreds

of companies, individuals and public

institutions. The ITALY Pavilion, fea-

turing the central exhibition and vari-

ous company exhibits, was planned

and organised by the ICE – Institute

for Foreign Trade. I would like to ex-

press my sincere thanks to the ICE

for its work in the German market in

developing the exchange between our

two countries and for its participation

at this year’s trade fair. Branded “Han-

nover shows and shapes the future”,

the exhibit will enable visitors to ad-

mire the innovative capacity of our

companies in production and distri-

bution of energy, sustainable mobility

and manufacturing and automation

systems.

The ITALY Pavilion will house a

project sponsored by the City of Rome,

combining the demands placed on

mobility – both collective and individ-

ual – and conservation of the city’s cul-

tural and artistic heritage.

All the preconditions are therefore in

place to ensure that the HANNOVER

MESSE will serve as a forum for con-

solidating the political understanding

and economic synergies between Ita-

ly and Germany which are founded

on a long-standing tradition of col-

laboration and friendship.

T he HANNOVER MESSE –

the leading trade fair world-

wide for industry and tech-

nology – will be held this year from 19-

23 April. The focus will be on Italy as

the Partner Country, a fact which is im-

portant for a number of reasons.

HANNOVER MESSE is unique: It is

the main trade fair in Germany and a

key indicator of the state of health of

the global industry in the sectors rep-

resented as well as principal trends. Its

reach extends far beyond the borders

of Germany and offers exhibitors an

opportunity to promote their products

not just in the German market but also

internationally.

As a prestigious event that acknowl-

edges the dynamism of Italy’s econom-

ic-industrial model, it is particularly

significant for Italo-German relations,

also within the European Union. The

choice of Italy as the focus country tes-

tifies to the excellence of our industry

in key sectors for the trade fair. It also

reinforces our image as a major indus-

trial country alongside Germany in

terms of bilateral exchange, opportu-

nities for collaboration in other coun-

tries and as a partner for consolida-

tion on the internal market. Italy and

Germany are currently the only large

countries in the EU where headcounts

in the manufacturing sector still ac-

count for around 20 percent of the

workforce. There is a strong and un-

equalled tradition of subcontracting

between the manufacturing industries

The success of european industry is of central importance to the economic and social welfare of european citizens. Tajani’s central aim as Commissioner for enterprise and industry is to ensure that all the eu’s business sectors will come out of the current economic crisis stronger and more competitive than before, and will be able to support sustainable growth in a strong social market economy. cient energy transmission systems.

These are all fields in which Italy’s

expertise in science and industry is

making a major contribution to glo-

bal environmental protection. As al-

ways in Hannover, Italy’s top electri-

cal and motive power engineering

companies and industrial subcontrac-

tors will be showcasing their great in-

novative power and championing the

cause of energy efficiency.

Do you see opportunities for new cross-border b2b cooperative ven-tures in the energy sector that go beyond mere statements of policy?I personally am very confident that

Hannover will yield tangible progress

towards German-Italian – and indeed

European – cooperation. The chal-

lenges of renewable energy production

and distribution, energy R&D, techni-

cal realization and investment are sim-

ply too great to be resolved without a

Europe-wide bundling of resources. In

the Mediterranean region in particular,

there are opportunities for Italy and

Germany to work together very closely

and become key drivers of a pan-Euro-

pean energy policy. After all, the first

agreements are already in place, and

we will be showcasing these in Hanno-

ver. We will find our way into the future

mr. boiocchi, how far is italy already part of this global change in industrial strategy to provide greentech solutions? As Italian industry features a varied

and extended scenario, it is quite

impossible to give a single answer.

Generally speaking, Italian industry

is quickly making up ground after a

first delay, both in processes and in

products. This is particularly true in

automotive, where important firms

like Fiat group are extremely com-

mitted in green technologies. As well

as Brembo and Magneti Marelli who

shares with Pirelli the Cyber Tyre

project, aimed on building safer and

more ecological cars.

what will be the main drivers for existing industries to adopt greentech?Everyone must do his part. Public

incentives were important last year

because of the crisis, but actually in-

centives are related to a product cat-

egory as a whole, provided that it of-

fers sustainable features. But only

consumers are in charge of reward-

ing a product by choosing it. Markets

are more and more oriented to green

products with less environmental im-

pact and consumptions. This is true

not only for Western economies, but

everywhere. The challenge for ad-

vanced industry is to understand and

precede these needs in order both to

achieve a strong market position and

to raise technological barriers to low

cost and low technology products. In

other words, Greentech is an engine

for development and employment.

emissions. The company operates

in the European and Chinese mar-

kets with two main products which

reduce diesel vehicle emissions: the

FeelpureTM particulate filtering sys-

tem for vehicles already in circula-

tion, approved and sold in the main

European countries and China, and

GecamTM, a fuel with low environ-

mental impact. Pirelli Eco Technolo-

gy also produces and sells particulate

filters intended for original equip-

ment. FeelpureTM is a technology

developed by Pirelli Eco Technology

to reduce the particulate emissions

from diesel engines. The “retrofit”

system can be applied to trucks, bus-

es and coaches, light commercial ve-

hicles, and earth-moving machinery,

and is housed in a muffler which re-

places the original silencer, thereby

removing the need to actually modify

the engine. The particulate filters are

made in silicon carbide and are able

to cut particulate emissions, consid-

ered the highest polluting agent in

urban areas, by more than 90 percent.

pean countries are well positioned in

global competition because they have

better understood that greentech is

the competitive challenge to over-

come. Other Countries or even spe-

cific fields inside are less attentive to

this issue. On the whole we can say

that Europe is absolutely aware of the

fact that green economy is not a fash-

ion or a simple marketing issue but a

real ground of research and develop-

ment on which the innovation capa-

bilities of a whole system or a single

company are the main player. Pirelli is

certainly leading in this direction.

new eCO COnCePTs

at the Centro Ricerche FiaT, new concepts for advanced city vehicles and possible future scenarios are ambitiously being researched. The goal is to develop city vehicles with zero or ultralow emission, combined with driver assistance systems such as parking assistance, collision avoidance, stop&go or automatic guidance systems, which can help to drive a vehicle along a reference path maintaining a desired speed. already in the end of 2008, Daimler ag has launched its electric mobil-ity project in cooperation with enel, italy’s largest energy supplier. in 2010, the “e-mobility italy” initiative will see more than 100 electric cars of the smart and mercedes-benz brands roll onto the streets of Rome, milan and Pisa. enel will be responsible for developing and setting up over 400 charging stations especially for this purpose in the three cit-ies. The project aims to further develop automotive technology and an intelligent infrastructure, and also establish open standards. infra-structure is a particularly important issue in italy, where the majority of vehicles are parked in city streets.

sustainable technologiesin July 2009 the new italian national agency for new Technologies, energy and sustainable economic Development (enea) has been founded. enrico elli, sub-Commissioner at enea speaks on current and future research projects.

mr. elli, enea has a new name, does that mean it has also a new target?The new ENEA was established on the

23rd of July, 2009, when Article 37 of Law

n. 99/2009 assigned to ENEA the role of

the Italian Agency for New Technology,

Energy, and Economic Sustainable Devel-

opment. This means that we have a new

important target: in particular, the role of

the Agency that shall finalize all activities

complying with the requirements of eco-

nomic sustainable development.

Italian Energy policy recognizes the

need to diversify its energy supply port-

folio in order to reduce and hopefully

overcome actual dependence on fos-

sil fuels and electricity import. In ad-

dition, Italy must comply with the Eu-

ropean Climate and Energy Package.

This can be considered ENEA’s new

mission: supporting the Italian energy

policy through the promotion and in-

novation of sustainable technologies.

how are you coordinating the different projects and approaches?My position’s responsibilities within

ENEA was decided by a specific act of the

Ministry of Economic Development on

the 15th of September, 2009. I am quite

familiar with the professional expertise

of the ENEA personnel as well as the po-

tential of its research laboratories, both

of which provide a great resource for the

Italian industrial system. Our efforts in

overseeing our mission lie in focusing

projects and human resources towards

the new role of Agency in support of the

Development Policy of the Italian Gov-

ernment in the field of Energy.

what are the main current and future projects of enea?Even though I’d like to outline all of

ENEA’s projects within an integral

contextual framework, I would say that

my focus is three-fold. First, we are ac-

tively participating in the so-called Ital-

ian Nuclear Renaissance, whose objec-

tive is to produce 25 percent of our en-

ergy through fission by the year 2020.

In this area ENEA, with its network of

test facilities and laboratories, can sup-

port Italian industry within the “supply

chain” by qualifying components and

systems to face the challenges of this

new market.

We are also involved in the major Euro-

pean and international projects for the

IV generation nuclear power reactors.

One of the main objectives is to mini-

mize the waste for an easier decommis-

sioning activity. Secondly is the area of

Energy Efficiency. Everybody recogniz-

es the importance of energy efficiency

as one of the leading instruments to

reduce GHG emissions and to reach

the objectives by 2020. In this area, at

ENEA, a specific new technical Unit

has been constituted, following a De-

cree of the Ministry of Economic De-

velopment. The Unit will establish and

implement all the procedures that will

be necessary to overcome the barriers

that impede or delay the diffusion of

energy efficiency in Italy.

Finally, allow me to include the spe-

cific feature of ENEA as a research in-

stitution: we are actively committed to

participating in international projects

within the sector of nuclear fusion.

how does enea cooperate with the industry firms, bringing achieve-ments to the market, to industry and households?ENEA considers that the achievement

of the objectives of reducing carbon

emissions and increasing the produc-

tion of renewable energy are possible

if the industry firms are effectively in-

volved in the process at an earlier as

possible stage. With this in mind ENEA

transfers to the productive system the

best practices in energy technology

R&D through specific collaboration

agreements or the constitution of Con-

sortia. ENEA advises on global strate-

gies to accelerate market penetration

and which technologies are ready-to-

use to improve business performance.

The Agency also produces scenarios for

power generation and for energy end

use in buildings, industry and trans-

port. Industry firms can therefore de-

velop new business models to face the

market, implement sector roadmaps

and expand investment in R&D. In the

sector of households we develop specif-

ic activities to target people, informing

about energy, technologies and incen-

tive programmes for energy efficiency

in buildings.

which meaning has the research of fuel cell technology for enea?We believe in fuel cells technology, and

our researchers have been working in

this sector for many years. Let me focus

here on the possible applications in the

sector of transport. The field of transpor-

tation is responsible for a large share of

expected emission reductions. Research

in fuel cells would allow us to exploit a

wide area of medium term technologies

to be used to reduce air pollution. Vehi-

cles powered by fuel cells rather than

gasoline would have a potential energy

efficiency of 27-41 percent (cf the aver-

age value of 16-18 percent of gasoline-

fueled vehicles.) We feel strongly that fu-

el cells technology is significant but we

know that it will be relevant at market

level not before 2030.

which role does european coopera-tion play in your opinion in order to accelerate projectsEuropean cooperation plays a very im-

portant role in terms of accelerating our

projects. We participate in several Re-

search Projects financed by the Europe-

an Commission and recently, ENEA has

been one of the founding members of

the European Energy Research Alliance

(EERA). This is a network of European

agencies and other research institutions

that cooperate on a voluntary basis, shar-

ing human and instrumental resourc-

es in joint research programs in all the

energy-related sectors (carbon capture,

hydrogen, solar energy, grids, etc.): I be-

lieve that this cooperative activity can ac-

celerate RD &D within the area of en-

ergy technology. In fact, we can develop

a strategic long-term focus, establish a

long-term supportive policy framework,

adopt a portfolio approach, and moni-

tor and evaluate the status of R&D on

a regular basis.

All of this can help to bridge the gap

between the public and private sector

in terms of exploiting the best available

energy technology that can be used and

to share the mix of technologies in or-

der to reach the objective of EC 2020

and the reduction of CO2.

effort. The Enel Group is currently

carrying out several R&D projects

in this field, both in CSP (solar ther-

modynamic) and photovoltaic. In the

CSP field, the Archimede plant rep-

resents our project at the forefront.

By combining innovative solutions

both in the design of the plant, that

uses molten salts as fluid combining

heat transfer and energy storage, and

in its components (collector and par-

abolic trough), Archimede ensures

highly efficient energy supply also at

night time. In the photovoltaic field,

the Enel Group strategy is to test in-

novative photovoltaic panels (using

new materials, instead of silicon, or

new solutions, like thin films, multi-

junction or optical concentration) as

well as developing integrated systems

coupling energy production with stor-

age. A brand new Enel solar labora-

tory in Catania (Sicily) is equipped to

test every kind of photovoltaic panels

and will be the Enel Group’s bench-

mark test site. On the other hand, we

have developed the Diamond, that

integrates photovoltaic panels, pro-

duction of hydrogen and hydrogen

energy storage. At the moment we

are planning a “low cost” version of

the Diamond, that can generate clean

energy for small communities living

in isolated area not connected to the

distribution grid, therefore ensuring

them self sufficiency of energy sup-

plies.

what are specifically the status and the perspectives of the archimede project in sicily?The 5 MW Archimede plant is being

completed in Priolo Gargallo (Catania,

Sicily) and will be commissioned at the

end of the first semester of 2010. It is a

first-of-a-kind so it will provide us im-

portant feed-backs in the first period

of operation: we will base future de-

velopments of CSP technology on the

Archimede experience. I can comfort-

ably state that the main drivers of our

research and development in CSP will

be efficiency increase and cost reduc-

tion, working both on plant configura-

tion and components, in order to facili-

tate the exploitation of the technology.

mr. starace, which role has renewable energy in the strategy of enel? Renewables are a pillar of Enel’s strat-

egy. For the Enel Group, investing in

renewables means investing in eco-

nomic and environmental sustain-

ability. In a scenario that strongly

depends on fossil fuels, renewables

are the best way to cut greenhouse

gas emissions. They also guaran-

tee diversification of the generation

mix, hence security of energy sup-

plies, for developed and developing

countries alike. This is why Enel con-

stantly stresses its commitment to-

to the acquisition of the Spanish utili-

ty Endesa, Enel has now a presence in

23 countries with over 96,000 MW of

net installed capacity and serves 60.8

million power and gas customers.

On December 1st, 2008 Enel estab-

lished Enel Green Power, the Group’s

Company dedicated to developing and

managing worldwide energy genera-

tion from renewable sources, which

currently operates over 4,700 MW in

plants relying on hydro, wind, geo-

thermal, solar and biomass sourc-

es in Europe and the Americas. The

company was set up by merging all

what is the specific approach of enel green Power to solar energy? Solar energy is the most widespread

source in absolute terms, available

anywhere and in quantities which far

outstrip energy needs. Growth is very

strong and the world trend forecast

for this sector is an average annual

rate of over 30 percent for the next

decade. In this sector Enel has been

a player right from the first market

and technological developments, re-

garding photovoltaic solar power in

particular.

Enel Green Power has inherited a

strong tradition from Enel in this sec-

tor with Enel.si, and has led itself to

play a leading role in the global mar-

ket, both in terms of know-how and

market development. In this sense,

the company believes in technological

partnerships and innovative business

models, such as franchising in Italy,

which has led to a strong develop-

ment in distributed generation on the

retail and commercial market, count-

ing on an extensive franchise network

with over 500 installers throughout

Enel Green Power has furthermore

closed an agreement with Sharp and

STMicroelectronics to produce inno-

vative thin-film photovoltaic panels.

The plant, located in Catania, Italy, is

expected to have initial production ca-

pacity of 160 MW per year and is tar-

geted to grow to 480 MW over the next

years. In addition, Enel Green Power

and Sharp will jointly develop solar

farms focusing on the mediterranean

area, with a total installed capacity at

a level of 500 MW, by the end of 2016.

laboration with Sharp, a world leader

in photovoltaic energy.

what will be enel green Power’s role in developing energy projects in north africa?Enel Green Power is looking with a

strong interest at this fast develop-

ing area. These regions are endowed

with substantial natural resources for

renewable energy generation and are

also going to experience industrial and

economic growth in the next years.

We believe in the development of re-

newable energy sources in this area,

also in its short and medium term po-

tential, and we will contribute to this

development with our strong exper-

tise, for the benefit of all stakehold-

ers, both locally and in Europe.

Besides, as Enel Group we are also

partners in OME – Observatoir Medi-

terranée de l’Energie – which is con-

tributing to the Mediterranean Solar

Plan development.

what is the specific expectation and role of enel green Power in the Desertec project?We consider the Desertec concept as

a major initiative for the development

of power generation from renewables

in the area: the long-term goal, to sat-

isfy a substantial part of the energy

needs of the Middle East and North

Africa (MENA) countries and meet

as much as 15 percent of Europe’s

electricity demand by 2050, is chal-

lenging and attractive for a company

like Enel Green Power. We would con-

tribute with our expertise in the sec-

tor, which as part of the Enel Group

deeply involves us in the development

of new technologies in both photo-

voltaic and solar thermal generation

with Archimede, the first system in

the world to fully integrate a gas com-

bined-cycle plant with a liquid-salt so-

lar thermal plant for electricity gen-

eration.

O ver 80 percent of the

world’s consumption of

primary energy is cur-

rently guaranteed by fossil sources

such as oil, coal and natural gas. In the

future, likely for several decades, these

sources will continue to guarantee a

large portion of the world’s energy de-

mand. All these fossil sources have

some environmental impacts and dis-

charge carbon dioxide into the atmos-

phere, although in different quantities.

Nuclear energy and hydroelectric en-

ergy, whose impact is lower in terms

of greenhouse gases emissions, satis-

fy about eight percent of world energy

demand. The traditional biomasses as-

sure an additional ten percent of the

world’s energy consumption. The ex-

cessive dependence on fossil energy,

even if easily accessible, flexible and

at acceptable price, will be not sustain-

able for the future of our planet.

Finding a solution to this problem rep-

resents a requirement to survival and

long term prosperity to the Oil and Gas

industry, and only scientific and tech-

nological research can actually pro-

vide effective answers. These are the

reasons why eni, starting from 2006,

chose to put technology innovation at

the core of its sustainable growth strat-

egies. eni has spotted ten key techno-

logical platforms with high priority as

far as investment for future business

development is concerned. These plat-

forms involve core sectors (oil and gas

exploration, production, transporta-

tion, and production of high perform-

ing fuels with low environmental im-

pact) renewable energies (solar energy

and biomasses) as well as environmen-

tal sustainability of operating activities.

At present, renewable energy provide

little contribution to the world energy

offer. This is due to the fact that the

technologies presently available only

allow for limited production of energy

at high prices. For example, solar en-

ergy satisfies less than one percent of

global energy needs and the production

cost of energy from photovoltaic plants

is several times higher than the one in

gas or oil-fuelled plants.

The availability of innovative technolo-

gies for the exploitation of alternative

energy sources will provide a funda-

mental answer to the need of a world

that asks for increasing energy, but

cannot afford it unless it is clean.

In 2007 eni has launched the “Along

with Petroleum” Program. Besides

eni has defined a new mission for the

Donegani Institute in Novara, which

became eni’s Research Centre for the

development of technologies in the

field of non-conventional energy – giv-

ing its new name “The Donegani In-

stitute – the eni research centre for

non-conventional energy‘. The cen-

tre’s activities are focused on the R&D

programme “Along with Petroleum”,

”the excessive dependence on fossil energy, even if easily accessible, flexible and at acceptable price, will be not sustainable for the future of our planet.”

breakthroughs in the use of solar en-

ergy and biomass.

eni is also committed to researching

technologies to reduce Co2 emissions

and is therefore developing the Green-

House Gas project (GHG) for the injec-

tion of CO2 in depleted gas and oil fields.

sOLaR eneRgYSolar energy can be considered the pri-

mary energy source by excellence.

Its exploitation can be obtained

through direct conversion of light in-

to electric power (photovoltaic effect).

The basic components of photovoltaic

systems are solar cells made by a wafer

a few tenths of millimeter thick or by

a thin layer of semiconductor material

(e.g. silicon) only a few microns thick,

suitably treated. Presently, the cost of

power generation from photovoltaic

plants is still high (0.2-0.5 €/kWh).

In order to overtake the current limits of

solar energy exploitation, it is fundamen-

tal to introduce technologies that can re-

duce the quantity of silicon used, while

producing the same amount of energy,

and in the longer term to substitute sil-

icon with polymer or organic materials

whose production costs are significantly

lower, with performances comparable to

those of silicon whose conversion effi-

ciency reaches 20 percent.

Solar energy can also be exploited to

fuel power conventional thermody-

namic cycles.

In this case vast fields of mirrors are

used (taking up to 2-5 hectares for eve-

ry MW installed) so as to focalize the

reflected light onto apposite receiving

of them, typically diathermic oil but

also melted salts. The fluid releases its

thermal energy therefore producing

steam that, in turn, powers a classic

steam cycle.

The research objectives pursued by the

Donegani Institute for solar energy

can be summarised as follows: the development of photovoltaic cells

based on organic and/or polymeric

materials with a view to reducing the

cost of producing electricity from so-

lar and overcoming current limita-

tions of silicon-based technologies; syntheses of photoactive materials

able to increase the conversion effi-

ciency of photovoltaic panels; the photo-production of hydrogen by

water dissociation using solar energy; the development of hybrid systems

for the production of electricity

(with the possible co-production of

desalinated water) based on concen-

trated solar power and combined

cycle technologies, also with a view

to a more efficient use of remote re-

serves of natural gas.

eni signed a strategic alliance with

MIT in Boston for research in energy-

related fields. The fulcrum of the col-

laboration is the “eni -MIT Solar Fron-

tiers Center”, founded in July 2008

with the aim to produce and acceler-

ate the development of advanced solar

technologies, in which eni will allocate

25 million dollars in five years.

biOmasseni’s goal in the medium-long term is

to develop processes that can poten-

tially lead to a breakthrough in bio-fu-

el production.

Bio-fuels can give their contribution in

the medium term by supplying renew-

able energy as an alternative to fossil

fuels in the transport sector, provided

they are produced with sustainable

processes and they are not in competi-

tion with the food sector.

The use of bio-fuels offers environ-

mental advantages because it does not

produce polluting emissions – sulfur

and polyaromatic hydrocarbons – even

though it shows lower energy efficien-

cies than fossil fuels.

eni’s R&D is concentrated on the pro-

duction of high performance bio-fu-

els– e.g. biodiesel with cetane number

higher than traditional diesel – and of

bio-energy through the conversion of

non edible biomasses.

In the field of the production and

development of biomass energy, the

Centre’s activities are focused on the

following: the conversion of non-edible bio-

mass in biofuels by gasification and

Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (second

generation biofuels); the use of microalgae, yeasts and bac-

teria in the production of diesel-fuels;

the production of energy and fuels

from urban solid organic waste by

thermochemical treatment; the identification of highly produc-

tive plants cultivated exclusively for

energy purposes, aimed at signifi-

cantly reducing the production costs

of biofuels and the areas under cul-

tivation.

eni has developed the EcofiningTM

technology in collaboration with its

partner UOP; it can convert vegetable

and microbial oils and fats into Green

Diesel, a high quality product without

oxygen and compatible with oilderived

diesel fuels.

CO2 miTigaTiOnEnvironmental protection and mitiga-

tion of climate change have and will

keep on having a major economic, so-

cial and operating impact on oil com-

panies whom are expected to show ev-

er growing commitment in the future.

Developing technologies aimed at re-

ducing the carbon dioxide emission

is a major goal for energy companies.

eni is involved in the Green House Gas

Project (GHG) that includes: feasibility studies for CO

2 storage in

depleted fields, gas storage fields, sa-

line aquifers in Italy; the implementation of a pilot project

for the injection of CO2 into a storage

field, as cushion gas in substitution

of natural gas; pilot test in saline aquifers; safeguarding CO

2 capture technol-

ogy through International initiatives

(e.g. JIP CO2 Capture Project – CCP3

project).

A pilot test is scheduled in collabora-

tion with Enel (the major Italian elec-

tricity company), including the CO2

capture from a power plant, the trans-

portation of dense state CO2 and the

injection and storage in the Cortemag-

giore depleted gas field.

what are your perspectives and plans in R&D activities?During its history, Bonfiglioli has al-

ways strongly invested in R&D. More

recently, our company has developed

a dedicated centre in Germany that

will lead R&D activities for all the

business sectors in which the com-

pany is active: Mobile, Wind, Pho-

tovoltaic, Industrial. Located in Ger-

many, close to Vectron, will be able to

join competence in electronics with

the strong mechanical tradition of

Bonfiglioli to provide complete mec-

catronic solutions. The many high

efficiency products developed in the

last years are a consequence of this

approach.

everybody is talking about greentech. how important for bonfiglioli has been the understanding of energy efficiency since long?25 years ago Bonfiglioli started sup-

plying components for the Wind In-

dustry, in 1996 our products were

used for the first time in biomass

plants and, since 2005, we provide

also solutions for the PV sector. This

clearly shows that attention to the

green energies is well established

within the company. Furthermore,

the focus on energetic performance

industrial competence in space Dr. enrico sagesse, the president of the italian space agency asi, explains the role of italy in the implementation of european and international cooperation in space.

S pace is no longer just a spe-

cialized tool mainly for sci-

entific research. It has be-

come an integral component for in-

dustrial and technical activity provid-

ing services and information critical to

societies around the world. However

the role of the Government in both

funding and strategically steering

those activities remains central and

pivotal. All over the world space activi-

ties are mainly driven by public insti-

tutions, and quite often private invest-

ments are catalyzed by means of gov-

ernment initiatives. This is particularly

the case in Europe, where budgets are

limited and the national Space Agen-

cies of each nation, including the Ital-

ian Space Agency ASI, are allied un-

der the European Space Agency ESA

flag to foster cooperation and make

national investments more efficient.

ASI has been working for more than

20 years to develop a national scien-

tific and industrial base, and it has

played a fundamental role in imple-

mentation of European and interna-

tional cooperation in space.

But the European Institutional en-

vironment continues to evolve pre-

senting new challenges to ASI. The

relationship between ESA and the

European Commission has become

closer; the satellite navigation project

Galileo as well as the Earth Obser-

vation programme GMES (Global

Monitoring for the Environment

and Security) are examples of space

activities managed by ESA on behalf

of the Commission. The budget for

the space activities of the European

Union EU through 2013 represents

10% of the total ESA budget (which

is about 3 billion €), but it is antici-

pated that the new 2014-2020 finan-

cial plan shall increase this budget in

order to comply with new responsi-

bilities assumed by the Commission

for space activities. This situation

will necessitate, in the coming years,

the responsibility to find a balance

between ESA and the EU. The moni-

toring role of the national Agencies,

and ASI is in the front line, shall be

extremely important to guarantee

equilibrium and respect for national

investments in space.

ASI initiatives have brought Italy to

a significant level of scientific and

industrial competence in space.

Specific examples of realized capa-

bilities include: the space based ra-

dar satellite system Cosmo-Skymed,

a constellation of four satellites with

remarkable performance in day and

night, all weather earth observation;

, the elements Nodes and Pressu-

rised Modules which constitutes

about 50% of the living habitat of

the International Space Station ISS:

and the small launch vehicle Vega

which is about to become opera-

tional. These are only very few ex-

amples of the range of notable on-

going space activities in Italy. But

ASI is also envisioning for this next

decade a full spectrum of new initia-

tives. In the field of Earth Observa-

tion the design and development of

the second generation Cosmo-Sky-

med satellites is already underway

in order to launch the new satellites

by 2013/2014. International cooper-

ations are contributing to develop-

ment of a joint space based system

for both optical and multispectral

remote sensing capabilities. In the

field of the space telecommunica-

tions ASI is promoting innovative

Public Private Partnerships to de-

velop satellite systems able to pro-

vide both commercial and public

services. In the field of the scientific

research ASI is fully engaged in the

ESA programme for the explora-

tion of planet Mars, but at the same

time it is envisioning the develop-

ment of focused scientific instru-

ments and sensors to be manifest-

ed aboard international missions,

thus enlarging the amount of data

and capabilities available to the na-

tional community. Finally ASI will

also secure flight opportunities for

Italian astronauts aboard the ISS in

the coming years, activities which

inspire the dreams and aspirations

of our young people.

research and technology resources

have been built there in the last dec-

ades. With Thales-Alenia, a French-

portant segment of system integra-

tion and the coordination of the dif-

ferent projects of Galileo. In our own

consortium for example, our Italian

partners are delivering the anten-

na components as well as the board

computer equipment for the satellite

construction.

You are also an italian entrepreneur…Yes, that is correct. We as OHB-Group

also use the versatile industry land-

scape of Italy for our entrepreneurial

development. Our Italian subsidiary,

Carlo Gavazzi Space in Milan, is of

great importance to us. The company is

still holding the name of one of Italy’s

most prominent machinery and engi-

neering firms. Even after aquiring all

shares of the company from the Gavaz-

zi family and Finmeccanica, we have

decided to keep this proud name. We

insisted on being more present in Italy,

instead of just using a sales department

or an outsourced manufacturing facili-

ty. Furthermore, it is important to be an

Italian company, to develop your value

creation in Italy, in order to be consid-

ways positive to have such an iden-

tity and to have a good understand-

ing and feeling for both cultural cir-

cles. Sometimes this fact helps us, to

overcome cultural misunderstand-

ings. One should know, that Italy is

a country offering a lot of opportuni-

ties. Far too little is the number of en-

trepreneurs from Germany, who rec-

ognize this possibility. They tend to

concentrate on sales, instead of going

beyond given industrial options. Ita-

ly is a technology country, even more

than Germany is, also due to a respec-

tive political will. The country never

focussed on benefits from simple ap-

plications, but has always sustained

and developed its own technological

abilities. Italy’s industrial clusters

are highly competitive on an interna-

tional level. Industrial versatility on

the one hand and technology minded

young talents being easily available

everywhere in the country have been

the base of Italy’s success so far.

The iCub: Crawling in genoa The iCub is a small-size humanoid robot being designed by the RobotCub Consortium, consisting of several european universities. The main goal of this platform is to study cognition through the implementation of biological motivated algorithms.

U ntil recently, the study

of cognition and the

neurophysiological ba-

sis of human behaviour was the sub-

ject of quite separate disciplines such

as psychology, neurophysiology, cog-

nitive science, computer science, and

philosophy, among others. The study

of cognition and intelligence is more

and more dependent on the use of

physical bodies, and, ultimately, on

the use of humanoid robots. Human-

oids are essential tools in the study of

human intelligence: since cognition

and the development of cognitive

skills are a function of both neural

and physical activity, it is important

to simulate human action when in-

vestigating the components of intel-

ligence.

The iCub is a 53 degree-of-freedom

humanoid robot simulating a three

and a half year-old child. It can crawl

on all fours and sit up. Its hands al-

low dexterous manipulation and its

head and eyes are fully articulated. It

has visual, vestibular, auditory, and

haptic sensory capabilities. The iCub

is an open systems platform. The

iCub will develop its cognitive capa-

bilities in the same way as a child,

progressively learning about its own

bodily skills, now to interact with the

world, and eventually how to commu-

nicate with other individuals.

The RobotCub humanoid platform

represents an important opportu-

nity to move this research agenda

forward. RobotCub is an Integrated

Project funded by European Commis-

sion. The consortium is composed of

ten European research centres and is

complemented by three research cen-

tres in the USA and three in Japan, all

specialists in robotics, neuroscience,

and developmental psychology.

The project is led by the University of

Genoa in the persons of Prof. Giulio

Sandini, Research Director at the

Italian Institute of Technology (IIT),

RObOTiCs inDusTRiaL POLe

(Polo della Robotica), a recently established association collect-ing and fostering the industrial and academic competencies in robotics within the region, and the soon to be established technological district on “intel-ligent integrated systems”, are just two examples of the energy and interest of the Liguria region in investing in next-generation robotics activities.

Prof. Giorgio Metta with specific re-

sponsibility for the robotic platform,

and Prof. David Vernon (with specific

responsibility for the cognitive archi-

tecture).

In the panorama of the Italian

academia, Genoa represents, for

these scientific topics, an important

reference point with possibly the old-

est tradition in studying bio-inspired

artificial systems and neuroscience-

based technological development.

Local industry is also active in both

robotics-related and information

technology activities. RobotCub was

designed and built by relying on spe-

cific industrial skills for quality of the

documentation, optimization and or-

ganization of the production of sev-

eral copies of the robot. This activity

was mainly carried out in Genoa with

one of the partners (Telerobot) and by

contracting specific skills in areas like

electronic design, miniaturization,

testing, materials, etc. The electronics

of the robot have been also developed

in collaboration with a local SME.

beginning in 1952 with Silvio

Brovedani who based

his small workshop

on his great me-

chanical skills and

experience. Since

then and up to now,

after the acquisition

of the company in 1972

by the current owner Benito

Zollia, Brovedani has always based its

growing success on its strong and di-

versified mechanical competence. It

has found a perfect mix with the strong

will to innovate and the focus on the

latest technology.

The experience in different produc-

tion sectors (Electrolux, IBM, Magneti

Marelli, Bosch, Delphi are only few ex-

amples) has given the company the

dynamism and the right approach to

production and proc-

ess quality that are today’s key to be a

The most important factor in the

Group latest years’ growth has been

what is your perspective and prac-tice on permanent innovation? how important are investments in R&D activities? The investments in the new technol-

ogy is one of Brovedani’s strong points,

in the last years investment rates have

always been set to levels higher

than ten percent compared to the

turnover. R&D in subcontract-

ing market is very important,

because the added value of our

work is not to discover some-

thing new but most of all it is a

challenge in organizing in a clev-

er way the latest and most cost ef-

ficient technologies in order to

produce components with higher

and higher technological content.

Clearly, to make all this a profitable

context, we need to apply the latest lean

manufacturing principles to optimize

the resources and avoid waste of time

that, with big investment, could bring

big losses.

in the making of the company how important was the international ori-entation for achieving innovation potential and quality standards of brovedani?Today, with the strong mar-

ket internationalization, it

is important to be present

worldwide and give the cus-

tomer a global service with global

standards. Brovedani headquarter is

located in S. Vito al Tagliamento, in

North east of Italy, where we have also

two production units. In addition, we

have production plants in Bari (south

of Italy), Galanta (Slovakia) and Quere-

taro (Mexico).

The Brovedani philosophy in this in-

ternationalization is not the typical

delocalization of production means

but it is based on strong investments

to grant the same efficiency and qual-

ity standard worldwide. It is obviously

very important to be close to the cus-

tomer and to the market, but what

makes the difference is to be close to

them with the same standards.

which role does the german market play for brovedani? what is the im-age you have achieved in status of your suppliers relations throughout the years?Today, the German market is extremely

relevant for us and represents roughly

40 percent of our turnover. Germany

and its automotive sector is the lead-

ing market for innovation and strategy.

We have acquired important relation-

ship with German customers based on

strong history and cooperation which

permits us today to be among Bosch’s

preferential suppliers (VZL).

Nowadays, the word is mov-

ing very fast and other

markets are growing

all around the world.

However, to be strongly

present in Europe

and especially in

Germany, where

the automotive high-

est technology is still

developing earlier than in oth-

er countries, is for us a strategic choice.

Do you expect the end of crisis of the automotive sector to come soon, and how did brovedani feel the crisis?Should we consider today’s orders, it

might seem that the crisis is ending,

but the information we have from the

car sales market is telling us some-

thing different. The European car

sales, now that the government auto-

motive incentives are almost over, have

dropped down again to lower levels

compared to the last months of 2009.

Now, all OEMs are probably rebuild-

ing their stocks and so they are push-

ing strongly on the supplier chain, but

the question is what should we expect

after they meet the target?

We think we have to increase our con-

centration to be ready to follow the

market demand, organizing our struc-

ture in a very flexible way and having

the right sensibility to feel every sin-

gle small signal of change in custom-

er demands. Nevertheless, we have to

be aware that these difficult situations

are on one hand a threat and on the

other hand they could hide some big

opportunities.
