Being Who We Are We have been, most of us, sheltering in place for most of the last two and a half months. It will have been three months of partial quarantine as most of you read this. Being at home, with our families, who else might we be than ourselves? Well, we are sometimes less than ourselves. We some- times ‘forget ourselves’ as we call it. We try to take social distanc- ing precautions when we do go out, both to respect and to protect others. We try to be cautious about what language we use, so as not to offend others and so as to show respect. Yet, on occasion, we forget ourselves. Currently, some of us are saying “Black lives matter.” This is a way of insisting that “all lives matter.” There was a time when Irish-Americans were valued lower than slaves by their employers. That was 150 years ago, so I think I will neglect to bemoan my fate as a mere Irishman at this juncture. Right now, African-Americans are suffering marginalization and brutality. So, right now, …these days, I do take the time to say, “Black lives Mat- ter” This is part of being who I am. Someone who will not tolerate racism, someone who empathizes with the dis-empowered. While we shelter in place and await a more free and easy way of living, I hope that you are all able to be who you are. … To be yourselves. It is clear to each of us which actions are in accord with our integrity. What words we each feel we need to say. I can- not do much to help others right now. I can, will, and do speak out for justice when I see the need. Each of you will do as you see is in keeping with your own values and sense of integrity. We expect to have an Obon service 7/19 at 10 am. We will have social distancing, we will take precautions. Being Who We Are

We have been, most of us, sheltering in place for most of the last two and a half months. It will have been three months of partial quarantine as most of you read this. Being at home, with our families, who else might we be than ourselves? Well, we are sometimes less than ourselves. We some-times ‘forget ourselves’ as we call it. At This Hour of StressIn this morning LA Times (March 22), Charles McNulty,

theater critic, writes, “I’m prepared to settle into the boredom (of being cooped up due to the pandemic) and see what illumination I might find there.”

McNulty, in other words, is saying being socially isolated; that is, being forcibly cooped up, is like being in a monastery. Where monks are socially isolated so that they might seek to find some measure, in McNulty’s words, of illumination.

In a way, at this writing, we’re in a way, all in a monastery. That is, we can’t leave the house, travel, hug our grandkids or basically do what we want.

Positively stated then, like monks, because all or most of our distractions have been taken away, this moment of being cooped up has the potential to serve as an ideal time to meditate on truths that go deeper than what we’re accustomed to.

For example, the Dharmic truth that we cannot control the karmic flow of our lives. Or that despite our faith in the strength of our bodies, in fact our bodies are fragile entities. Or that we’ve forgotten how grateful we ought to be for that which we had heretofore taken granted. And so forth.

So all is not lost. While fully cooperating, then, with the order to stay socially isolated, let’s turn this moment of stress into a moment of deepened awareness of ourselves and of life. Turning to use a Buddhist phrase…That which is bad into that which is good (Tennaku jozen).

Finally, the hope here is that all Pasadena members are faring well and continue to remain in good spirits….

Gassho, Reverend Tetsuo Unno

The State and City is allowing houses of worship permission to open again. We have been working on following the guidelines from the public health department to safely reopen our temple for services. The Reopening Committee has been keeping up with all the suggested protocols and attending meetings online with the City, County and BCA to come up with a plan.

Things will be different when we reopen the Temple. Your temperature will be taken, questions will be asked about your health. You will also fill out a card to help us with contact tracing information. The pews will be marked so seating will be spaced to accommodate safe distancing protocols. The osaisen box will be used to collect your Dana offering. If you still are not feeling comfortable returning to our temple, we will continue to record the weekly services and post them on YouTube and the temple’s website.

We will let you all know when our Temple will be ready to reopen.

Youth NewsI’m hoping that you are all doing well, staying healthy and safe.

Usually at this time of the year we would all be busy cleaning the Temple grounds getting ready for our annual Obon festival. But this year is different. There are still many folks preparing for a festival, but it will be held online instead of in-person.

Obon is a very special time for all Shin Buddhists. It is a time to reflect on how our own lives have been impacted by the lives of our ancestors and friends who have passed away before us. It is a time to be grateful to them and also to others who are sharing their lives with us now. It is usually a time when we would have all come together to dance joyously in gratitude for the life we are living right now.

During the Safer-at-Home regulations our essential staff, the SOGs, have been coming regularly to help maintain the buildings and grounds so when the Safer-at-Home regulations are lifted you will see a well-maintained site ready for our visitors. And many thanks to the Dharma School parents and Kyoko for collecting Japanese pantry items and fresh fruits to deliver to our homebound seniors.

Thanks to everyone for continuing to support our temple with donations. As of June our COVID fundraiser has over $23,000 in contributions. We also appreciate all your Obon donations.

I look forward to when I can thank each of you in person. Gassho, Jeannie

We are adjusting to a world where we see each other, but cannot touch. Our meetings, as well as Southern District BWA meetings, have been held online via Zoom. Toban groups have been checking on our Super Senior members, espe-cially those without email. Pasadena BWA will donate $200 to the Pasadena Buddhist Temple

to help purchase supplies needed to re-open the temple safely under City of Pasadena Dept. of Health guidelines.

Southern District BWA has announced a new grant program for Southern District temples. The goal of the grant program is to promote the dissemination of Jodo Shinshu teaching in our Southern District Temple communities, via new program or event content which can serve current Temple members or used to reach out to non-Jodo Shinshu individuals. The deadline for the application is August 28. If anyone has a suggestions for projects that Pasadena Buddhist Temple could undertake, please email [email protected] as soon as possible. For information about the grant pro-gram, please visit: https://southerndistrictbwa.weebly.com.

Please note a change of date for the Citadel Shopping Extrava-ganza. The new dates are Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, Octo-ber 11. Our BWA has applied to be a participating charity again. The date changes reflect the Citadel Outlets efforts to provide as many safety precautions as possible for shoppers.

Our members are continuing to make masks. Please contact Kyo-ko Gibbs if you or your family (including children) need a mask.

2020 Virtual Obon FestivalSaturday, July 18

Obon is a special time when we remember and honor our ancestors and friends who have gone to the Pure Land. One “tradition” we have is the Bon Odori ...we dance for the joy of being alive and to dance in memory and honor of the dead. If our minds and hearts are full of remem-brance, we dance for joy, not to show-off. 2020 has seen the closing of the Temple doors for services and activities due to the risks posed by the coronavirus. We have all made adjustments to our Safe at Home lifestyle. And yet, we will celebrate Obon, together, virtually online. We will try to incorporate as many of the Obon Festivities you remember as possible. Start your Virtual Obon Festival experience by going to our temple website: www.PasadenaBuddhistTemple.org. There will be a link to a special Obon site where you can access many activities:• Silent Auction: Bidding starts on July 5 and ends at 7:30 pm on July 18. Items will

be added continually until July 18, so visit often! Pay online. Winners can pick up at the temple or pay for shipping. Item or service donations accepted until July 15. Please call the temple or email: [email protected] to arrange for drop-off or mail your item to Pasadena Buddhist Temple, 1993 Glen Ave. 91103 with donor name, address, item, market value.

• Virtual Marketplace: Each year our gym is filled with vendors offering unique Japanese-themed wares. Shop from their websites posted on our Obon page.
