Happy New Year Passaic County 4-H Friends and Family!
Winter is here for sure and a new year is upon us! I can't believe it's 2018! I would like to wish
you and your families much love, happiness, lots of fun, and good health in this new year!
First, I would like to send out a BIG THANK YOU to Kenny, Greg, and all of our Passaic
County Rutgers Cooperative Extension faculty/staff who helped to keep the Passaic County 4-H
program up and running while I was out the last few months. Without their support many of the
programs would not have been able to continue. I am very lucky to work with some many great
people. I would also like to thank the Passaic County 4-H family for their love, caring, and sup-
port for me and my family at the loss of my best friend, an amazing father, and passionate 4-H
Leader - Arthur "Buddy" Nemetz. He is in a much better place watching over us now. We are
lucky to have all our wonderful memories.
While 2017 was a great year for Passaic County 4-H, 2018 is gearing up to be even better and
much busier. Check out the calendar of events in this newsletter and updated
on http://passaic.njaes.rutgers.edu/. All clubs are meeting again, and all club leaders need to
make sure club members are listed on 4-H online. For those club members not listed online, they
are not active club members, do not qualify for any events (public presentation, NJTC,
pins/awards at awards night, etc.).
“Learning never exhausts the mind.” ~ Leonardo da Vinci
Clubs should start thinking about Public Presentation night (April 20th), preparing youth for public presentations and
giving them time to practice their presentations in their clubs. Remember teens who score an excellent during county public
presentations will qualify for state public presentations at Rutgers in June.
I know summer seems so far away right now, but a reminder - for those interested in attend the LG Cook 4-H Camp, at
Stokes, early bird registration has already begun - http://nj4hcamp.rutgers.edu/. Last summer all the weeks were sold out,
and there was a waiting list for almost all weeks.
While talking about summer, even though fair may feel so far away, clubs should be working on Club Display Boards and
fair exhibits throughout the year to prepare for Fair (August 2018). Exhibits will all be due to our office at the end of July.
Remember all club members are expected to participate in fair, both exhibiting and attending. Even if your club
does not meet.
Thanks again to everyone for a wonderful 2017! I'm looking forward to an even better 2018!
See you all very soon!

The Passaic County Fair 2017 was a blast! Once
again the 4-H staple attractions; Chick hatching,
Seeing Eye Pups, and Alpacas were a huge it.
Thank you to all our volunteers and staff who make
our tent the best at the fair!

(mostly candy) to first responders.

2017 is over and what a year it was. Our 4-H program has grown so
much in the last couple of years. So much so we are starting to out-
grow our awards night venue with over 100 people in attendance
this year! So much food, so much fun thanks to everyone who came.
Special thanks to all of our volunteers who put countless hours into
their clubs and Passaic County 4-H. Thank you to our club mem-
bers for wanting to make the best better. Finally, thank you to all
our 4-H families for being a part of our 4-H family.

~ Aldous Huxley
In the past 4-H year, our club the junior council have completed many volunteer
projects. A few of our members attended the NJTC where they stayed three days.
There did backpacks for life, were they put important living supplies in a backpack
and donated it to the homeless. They also did fun activities, learned useful skills,
and met new people. Another couple of our members attended “Heathy Living
Ambassador Training”. They learned about portion control, and how to make
heathier choices in their everyday lives. In August our club worked the 4-H tent at
the Passaic county fair. The fair ran for four days, and many 4-H members from all
clubs came to volunteer. In our tent we had exhibits such as art, posters, baby
chicks, and butterflies. We also had activities like face painting, Oobleck, water bal-
loon tosses, and making smoothies with our bike. The tent was a success and peo-
ple at the fair seemed to enjoy, and be interested in our clubs.
The 4-H Velveteens has a busy season! During the summer Mr. Sheriff, who came here as an ambassador for 4-H in Liberia, explored 4-H in America and made con-nections to bring back home with him. While he was here, our club took a tour of Rutgers New Brunswick, raised funds at a local church for Liberia, discovered early farming machines at the Sussex County Fair, and learned about what life is like for students in Liberia.
As the new 4-H year began, new changes were brought onto the club. Jessica Lucas was elected the president of the club, and Aidan Lucas became the new Media Direc-tor. At the Passaic County fair, collectively the club won numerous ribbons from artwork, projects, and record books. Way to go! We look forward for another year ahead.
