Passaic County Community College Vision, Mission, and Values Statement

Vision: PCCC aspires to be a premier community college that leads, inspires, and supports individuals in reaching their educational and career goals in a timely manner.

Mission: PCCC offers high-quality, flexible, educational and cultural programs that meet the needs of Passaic County residents. The College provides its students with a strong general education foundation for further study and opportunities for career preparation and lifelong learning. Impassioned by our commitment to student progress and program completion, the College strives to address a wide variety of student learning needs through excellence in teaching, innovative and effective use of technology, multiple instructional methods and developmental and ESL programs that provide access to college-level programs. The College’s supportive learning environment fosters student success and faculty excellence. Through a culture of evidence and inquiry, the College is an effective steward of its physical, financial, and intellectual resources.

Values: PCCC Values

Academic Quality: We commit to educational excellence in teaching and learning Learning: We embrace a learner-centered philosophy, one that guides us in our efforts to improve student progress and program completion Diversity: We value our diversity because it enriches our learning environment and deepens our respect and appreciation for others Honesty and Integrity: We commit to an educational environment characterized by honesty, integrity and mutual respect

The College Seal Like all coats of arms, the Passaic County Community College seal contains rich meanings which are intended to highlight symbolically the major elements of the College’s educational philosophy. The colors of the seal themselves have great significance. Although the seal has changed through time, the significance has not. Red signifies social values; and black represents the virtues of perseverance, loyalty, and justice. Within the shield is a Greek lamp, the flame of which is burning a chain. These symbolize knowledge severing the chains of oppression and slavery based on ignorance. Beneath them is the College’s motto, Perseverantia Triumphant: Perserverance Triumphs, and beneath the motto is the year in which the College received its charter, 1968. The circular form of the College seal suggests the perfection of the circle, an unbroken tradition on teaching and learning extending from the beginning of time into infinity.

Graduation with Honors To be considered for honors at graduation, a student must have successfully achieved one of three levels of outstanding academic performance. A candidate who has earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 to 3.69 graduates with honors (red cord); a candidate who has earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.70 to 3.89 graduates with high honors (silver cord); and a candidate who has earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.90 to 4.0 graduates with highest honors (gold cord). The graduates of Passaic County Community College who have been inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society are wearing the double blue (for scholarship) and gold (for purity) honors cord as part of their graduation regalia. EOF graduates who are members of the EOF Honor Society – Chi Alpha Epsilon, receive Blue and White honor cords. Graduates who serve or have served in the U.S. military are invited to wear red, white, and blue honor cords at commencement ceremonies in recognition of their service to our country.

Academic Heraldry COMMENCEMENT Commencement, or graduation, is the most important convocation held by a college or university. It is a ceremony in which students are awarded their degrees and honored by the attendance of the faculty. As part of the pageantry, participants are attired in formal academic robes and engage in ceremonial processions that have their origin in the church and university convocations of the late Middle Ages. The commencement processional is led by the Senior Academic and Student Affairs Marshal and the class valedictorian. The students follow the marshal, with candidates for the Associate’s degrees and Certificates. Next come the administration, faculty, alumni representative, Board of Trustees, Macebearer, and the President of the College. Faculty members precede in order of rank; instructors lead, followed by assistant professors, associate professors, and professors. The platform party, including the President of the College, clergy, special guest speaker, and Chair of the Board of Trustees, is conducted to its place. At the end of the ceremony, the order of march is reversed in the recessional. DEGREE The degrees granted by two-year community colleges are associate degrees (Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, Associate in Applied Science) and Certificates. These degrees may be granted in cursu, for work completed in the course of study, and refers to one who is associated with recipients of the other degrees.

ACADEMIC APPAREL The academic dress, worn by the participants in today’s ceremonies, links them with a

tradition extending back to the medieval universities of Europe.

In 1321, the University of Coimbra ruled that all “Doctors, Licentiates, and Bachelors” under its jurisdiction had to wear special gowns to identify them as scholars. Later in the century, certain English colleges required sober academic dress for students and teachers to offset the growing trend toward overly splendid apparel. The gowns also had a practical purpose in those days of unheated college halls, since they provided warmth. American colleges and universities agreed to adopt traditional academic dress around the beginning of this century, complete with uniform variations in the gown and hood to denote rank, discipline, and school.

ACADEMIC GOWN

In the Middle Ages when a student received his first degree (bachelor), he would dress in a gown which showed his rank and status. The gown was fully gathered with large sleeves to distinguish it from the simpler monk’s robes. When a student earned his second degree (master) and was, therefore, more prosperous, the gown was replaced by one with very long sleeves that were sewn up and cut so the arms protruded at the elbows. The most advanced degree (doctorate) indicates completion of rigorous study and training, for which one wore a very luxurious academic gown with panels of velvet down the front and on the sleeves. Black is the traditional color of academic gowns, stemming from the black commonly worn by the clergy of the Middle Ages. In the United States, a number of universities have begun using gowns of distinctive colors. Among those you will see worn by the president and faculty at Passaic County Community College are scarlet and black for Rutgers University, maroon for the University of Pennsylvania, silver grey for Columbia University, and violet for New York University.

The members of the Board of Trustees are wearing distinctive gowns designed for them. The gowns are black doctoral gowns highlighted with red chevrons and piping (the colors of Passaic County Community College). The lapels are surmounted with red and black patches of the College’s Seal.

THE HOOD The hood is a reminder of the monk’s hood and indicates the type of degree and the school from which the degree was earned. The “velvet” around the collar is colored according to type of degree earned. White stands for arts, gold for science, dark blue for philosophy, light blue for education, apricot for nursing, purple for law, green for medicine, orange for engineering, drab for business, scarlet for theology, and pink for music. The lining of the hood is distinctive for each school. For all academic purposes, including trimmings on doctor’s gowns, edgings of hoods, and tassels of caps, the colors associated with the different subjects are as follows: Arts and Letters White Music Pink Business Light Brown Nursing Apricot Economics Copper Philosophy Dark Blue Education Light Blue Public Health Salmon Pink Fine Arts Brown Science Gold-Yellow International Affairs Peacock Blue Social Science Cream Laws Purple Theology Scarlet Library Science Lemon

The Mace

The Passaic County Community College Mace is a golden metal staff some three feet in length surmounted by a traditional crown. It is a medieval symbol of authority carried in academic processions by or on behalf of the institution or its chief academic officer, and placed near such officer during academic proceedings.
