PAST SIMPLE
• We use the Simple Past to express the idea that an action started and finished at a
specific time in the past. Sometimes, the speaker may not actually mention the
specific time, but they do have one specific time in mind.

PAST CONTINUOUS
•We use Past Continuous to indicate that a longer action in the past was interrupted. The interruption I s usually a shorter action in the Past Simple. Remember this can be a real interruption or just an interruption in time.

• We use Past Perfect expresses the idea that something occurred before another action in the past. It can also show something happened before a specific time in the past.
• Positive Form:
Form Example:
When he had finished his homework, he went to bed.
I was tired because I had got up very early that morning.
She was very happy because she had won a prize.
Subject + had + Verb 3 + object.
PAST PERFECT
Negative Form:
For Example:
He didn’t know the answer because he hadn’t done his homework.
I hadn’t heard the joke before, I laughed a lot.
The ground was very dry, it hadn’t rained for a long time.

PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS
We use Past perfect Continuous to show that somethingstared in the past and continued up another time in thepast. “For five minutes” and “for two weeks” are bothdurations which can be used with the Past PerfectContinuous. Notice that this is related to the Present PerfectContinuous; however, the duration does not continue untilnow, it stops before something else in the past.
