Parents as Teachers Professional Learning Communities are being offered in two tracks for the 2017-2018 school year.

Sessions in “Track 1” are highly recommended for Parent Educators who have attendedFoundational Training recently or who need a refresher. These PLCs are designed toprovide a deeper understanding on the knowledge base and process skills needed toprovide quality PAT services. Topics include screening processes, family visit, goalsetting, the planning guide, recruiting and engaging families as well as connecting withcommunity resources.

Sessions in “Track 2,” provide additional opportunities for growth in knowledge andskills in each of the core competencies which in turn will strengthen families andpromote positive parent-child interaction. Topics include partnering with First Steps,the effects of toxins on growing children, early brain development and schoolreadiness, how to encourage protective factors in parents, supporting families withinfant feeding and behaviors, pregnancy and postpartum mood disorders, and howtrauma and adverse childhood experiences effect brain development.

Professional Learning Communities are offered at “No Charge” to Missouri Parent Educators.

PLEASE NOTE: No additional professional development opportunities will be offered in the Spring of 2018 after the Conference on the Young Years.

A separate registration will be available for PAT professional development opportunities at the Conference on the Young Years. There will be a specific “Home Visiting” Summit held on Thursday, March 8, with a speaker and several sessions available for home visitors.

**PLC Cancellations—Please check media for cancellations due to inclement weather during

the winter months. The PLC will not be held if the host location is not in session. Cancellation

dates will be offered later in the year as needed.

TRACK 1 Introduction to Health and Developmental Screening, 9:00 a.m.-3:15 p.m. Facilitated by Missouri PAT Consultants

This “introduction” session is designed for first year parent educators and meets one of the requirements by DESE for 5 hours of development in the area of screening.

Specific ASQ/ASQ-SE training will no longer be offered through DESE Professional Development. Professional Development on a “specific” developmental screening tool will be the local district’s decision.

NOTE: Parent Educators: Bring your Foundational and Model Implementation Guides, Noisemakers (Rattle, bell & squeak toy), and a penlight to the session. (*DO NOT purchase a “mag light.”) Also, bring a blank copy of the Health History Record.

The Family Visit, 9:00-a.m.-3:15 p.m. Facilitated by Missouri PAT Consultants

This Professional Learning Community will focus on providing relevant, individualized learning and support during a family visit when there is more than one child. Take a look at making the most of your time together through the planning and delivery of discussion topics and parent/child interaction.

Watch a family visit of a young mother with two children and explore how to document child development observations.

Partnering with Parents: From Recruitment to Retention, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Facilitated by Missouri PAT Consultants

Learn how to attract new families and keep the families you currently serve involved in your program. Discuss how to clearly identify parent concerns, priorities and goals to ensure that the services you offer are meaningful to all families. The focus of this session will be on engaging families through personal visits, and strategies to inform planning for other program components.

You have completed the eight foundational visits with a family. Now what? This facilitated discussion will help you learn how to partner, facilitate and reflect with parents as you plan visits that meet the individual needs of the family. Examine how your relationship with the family continues to grow with the support of the family visit structure and the PAT Foundational Curriculum. Leave with the knowledge and confidence to effectively complete and utilize the personal visit planning guide.

Goal Setting: Begin with the End in Mind, 1:15-3:15 p.m. Facilitated by Missouri PAT Consultants

“Begin with the end in mind.” Goal setting is vital to the PAT approach and successful use of the Foundational Curriculum in working with families. This facilitated discussion will help parent educators look at their role in supporting parents as they set goals that will have a positive effect on family well-being and impact the growth and development of their children. Examine how to efficiently and effectively set goals to ensure quality PAT services for families.

TRACK #2

Supporting New Families with Infant Feeding and Behavior, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Facilitated by: Lisa Schlientz, State Breastfeeding Coordinator, Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services

Breastfeeding has been shown to reduce the risk of illness for mothers and infants and is recommended by health authorities as the biologically normal way to feed infants. Many young parents lack a cultural familiarity with breastfeeding and may not know how to sustain breastfeeding or what normal infant behavior looks like. This presentation will allow attendees to explore their own cultural beliefs about breastfeeding. It will also present information about the benefits of breastfeeding, ways to help parents sustain breastfeeding, and information about normal infant behaviors. This information will strengthen the Parents as Teachers educator's ability to support and promote breastfeeding as the normal choice for families.

Understanding Pregnancy and Postpartum Mood and Anxiety Disorders, 1:15 p.m.-3:15 p.m. "Dark Side of Full Moon," a 75 minute documentary that tells intimate stories of maternal mental health complications like pregnancy and postpartum mood and anxiety disorders, including postpartum depression. Following the video segment, additional discussion, information and resources will be provided to assist parent educators in supporting mothers and families well-being issues.

Having a baby is supposed to be the happiest time of your life. But what if it’s not? Each year, 1.3 million women in the U. S. struggle to find support and treatment for postpartum depression and other perinatal mood disorders. Two women, Jennifer Silliman and Maureen Fura, both with firsthand knowledge of this challenge, came together to give a face and a voice to the countless women who suffer in silence. With the help of Dr. Shoshana Bennett, Executive Producer, uncovering disconnects within the medical community to effectively screen, refer, and treat these women.

Parents as Teachers and First Steps Working Together, So, This is What It Looks Like!, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Facilitated by Missouri PAT Consultants and Missouri First Steps Area Directors

This session will give practical guidance on how Parents as Teachers and First Steps can collaborate to ensure Missouri children are receiving appropriate intervention services. Participants will learn the responsibilities of each program, as well as gain a better understanding for the process of sharing information between the two programs. This session will also offer the opportunities for parent educators and First Steps staff to network with one another.

Parent Education Through the Lens of Trauma, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Facilitated by Liz Viele, Licensed Professional Counselor, Nationally Certified Counselor, Trauma Specialist

Parent Educators and those involved in early childhood education are on the front lines in the critically important work of empowering families to raise holistically healthy children—no small task!

This presentation will align with what we know about the effects of trauma, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES), the brain research of Dr. Daniel Siegel and Becky Bailey’s Conscious Discipline. A shift in paradigm as well as addition of trauma informed activities and strategies to share with families in the critical work of early childhood education are outcomes of this session experience.
