Projects

The Paul Steyn Foundation is planning vari-

ous initiatives to raise funds. Amongst other

things, Paul is planning to demonstrate the

mobility his prosthetic limb provides, by

undertaking several walks. He has com-

pleted his first walk from Montagu to Cape

Town during February 2012. The purpose,

apart from raising funds, was to introduce

the Foundation to the public.

The fund raising part was not a great success, and the funds and spon-

sorships, were just enough to cover the costs of the initiative. As far as

creating awareness, it was a much greater success. News about the walk

appeared in various newspapers and Paul was a guest on several radio

stations.

The Paul Steyn Foundation was established as a non-profit organisation to; • Raise funds to provide deserving financially disadvantaged people with prosthetic limbs. • Make the public aware of the cost of prosthesis. • Take up matters concerning amputees with the govern-ment and other organisations. • Other matters related to the above.

PE to Cape Town Walk to

start on 25 August 2012

The date for Paul’s long an-

ticipated walk from Port

Elizabeth to Cape Town has

been finalized. It will now

kick-off on the 25th of August

2012.

Freedom Trail

Paul is also planning on walking the freedom trail. The

freedom trail is a route on which an annual mountain bike

race is held. It stretches from Pietermaritzburg in Kwa-

Zulu Natal to Paarl in the Western Cape, over a distance

of approximately 2350km. The trail is situated in mainly

rural areas such as Barkley East, Molteno, Cradock and

McGregor, amongst others.

We are only in the initial stages of the planning for this

walk. We are planning on publicising the walk widely

through press releases, television appearances and a

website. We are also planning on filming the trip and sell-

ing it to a television station to raise funds.

Special Project - Luca Viljoen

The Paul Steyn Foundation has taken on the plight of Luca

Viljoen as a special project.

Luca’s story…

Luca was born on 16 November 2008, 3 months premature. He

weighed 1.48kg and was 31 cm long. He was tiny and frail. He

had no lower right leg, all the toes on his left foot were fused

together, except the big toe, the radius bone in his left arm was

shorter than normal and he did not have a thumb. He also has a

very ugly scar on his left shin, the doctors couldn’t figure out

what it is or why it’s there.

He was fitted his first prosthetic leg when he was 6 months

old, which from then on had to be adjusted or replaced every

six to eight months. He also had to undergo various surgical

procedures to correct his stump, to give it a rounded form as

well as z-plasty to release the band on the tip of his stump, to

his left arm to lengthen the radius bone and to his hand, where

they moved his index finger to the where he should have had a

thumb, so that he could have more functionality of his hand. To

date he has had nine different operations.

When he is a bit older, he will hopefully receive a more ad-

vanced prosthetic leg, which will enhance his ability to walk

and lead a normal life. This could cost anywhere between R60

000 and R100 000 and will have to be replaced every 1 – 2

years depending on his growth rate. There are various proce-

dures overseas where they implant a cylindrical device which

is surgically inserted into the hollow of the remaining bone.

The goal is to encourage the bone to grow into the metal, simi-

lar to what happens after joint replacement surgeries. The arti-

ficial limb itself attaches to a short connector that protrudes

from the skin, eliminating some problems of socket prostheses.

But there are risks of infection etc. and this is also very expen-

sive.

He is currently on his grandparent’s medical aid, but one pros-

thesis and the funds are exhausted. They still have huge medi-

cal debts and there lies a long road ahead.

ABS occurs when the fetus becomes entangled in fibrous string-like amniotic bands in the womb, re-stricting blood flow and affecting the baby’s devel-opment. If a band wraps tightly around a limb, the limb can actually be completely amputated. If the band is across the baby’s face it can cause cleft palate. In a large number of cases the baby is also born with clubfeet. ABS is also the cause of numerous mis-carriages, such as when a band becomes wrapped around the umbilical cord. ABS occurs randomly. It’s not genetic, nor is it caused by anything a preg-nant Mom did or didn’t do during pregnancy. Just because a person already has one child with ABS, that doesn’t make it any more likely that it’s going to affect a future pregnancy.

All funds raised are paid into a trust

account administered by the the foun-

dation’s lawyers. Only reasonable ex-

penses related to the activities of the

foundation are claimed as needed.

The rest is used to provide prosthetics

for deserving persons and to further

the explicit aims of the foundation.

Paul Steyn is the only paid employee.

DIRECTORS Paul J Steyn - Founder and C.E.O.. Experi-enced fund raiser through involvement in community projects at Boland College. Johanna Horn - Treasurer - 30 years ex-perience in Bookkeeping with various compa-nies. John Ruthgen - Fundraising and telemar-keting. John, himself an amputee, has years experience in fundraising.

Sponsorship has been acquired from Össur, a prosthetic manufacturing company, who will do-nate prosthesis along the routes to deserving am-putees. The Foundation would however like to be able to make more prosthesis available. Any help that can be provided, donations or spon-sorship to further the cause of the Paul Steyn Foundation, would be greatly appreciated. We have a website and a Facebook page where the logos of sponsors are listed and linked to their

websites. In addition we will have dedicated site for the PE to Cape Town walk, as well as for the Free-dom Trail walk. More information is available on the Foundation’s website at http://ww.paulsteynfoundation.org.za/ or on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/paulsteynfoundation
