APSRC Adoption Fairs

Stella Adopted APSRC recently began a relationship with Petco as a Petco adoption partner. Our first adoption fair was held at the Greensboro Petco store on West Wendover. Stella, pictured at right, was adopted by a family in Burlington and is the first of hopefully many successful adoptions at Petco for us. Currently we are bringing animals to Petco for adoption that come from the Rockingham County Humane Society in Eden and we will be having adoption fairs at the Greensboro store located at 4217 West Wendover at least one Saturday every month. Check our website for the dates.

Hilton Needs a Home

This loving boy needs a permanent home. Hilton has attended our adoption fairs and he’s affectionate and well behaved. He’s a terrier mix who’s about one and a half years old and 40 pounds. He’s been neutered and vaccinated. He would love to sit and be petted or take a walk with you. Call APSRC or the Rockingham County Humane Society if you’re interested in Hilton.

• Helped families in need - by providing pet food routinely to at least 80 pets and 4 food banks/rescue groups, provided dog houses for 6 families in need, provided monetary assistance with medical fees, vaccinations and reclaim fees for 15 pets and spay/neuter assistance to 67 pets in need

Gimme Shelter: The Night Before Christmas

By Renee Poudrier (with a nod to Clement Clarke Moore)

originally published in the Madison Messenger

‘Twas the night before Christmas, as the stories tell,

When the church clock tolled the midnight bell.

Then beasts in the field, in the home, and the stable

Could magically talk, as each was able. The cats and the dogs in the shelter soon found

That their voices transformed to a human sound.

Each tabby’s meow and every hound’s bay

Translated to words—they had something to say. “I want a home!” barked a black and white pup. “What is a home?” a small kitten spoke up.

From the kennels and cages there arose such a clatter,

For the question she posed was a serious matter. A calico purred, “Home’s a wonderful dream! It’s a clean safe space where love reigns supreme.

It’s a place people make, where you’re watered and fed;

You’re welcomed with kindness and a warm soft bed.”

A grizzled old beagle reminded the cat,

“Not all those called people make us homes like that.

When I was younger they said I could stay,

But when I got older they threw me away.” Then every beast told their story of woe,

All brought to the shelter with no place to go,

All frightened and lonely and suffering much,

They quietly longed for a sweet human touch. As the moon slowly faded, cold broke the dawn,

By Christmas morn, the gift of speech was all gone,

The creatures fell mute at the holy day’s start,

But they speak with their eyes, they speak with their heart. The strays, the unwanted, they patiently stand

Awaiting their homes, someone’s welcoming hand.

Is there a way to make such great hopes come true?

The answer is simple; the answer is---you.

Update on the New Rockingham County Animal Shelter

APSRC wholeheartedly supports the new Rockingham County Animal Shelter. We’ve played an active role in trying to get an adequate animal shelter for the county. The bidding process for the new shelter should begin in January and groundbreaking is expected by March 2010. We continue to serve on the shelter steering committee in an advisory role and we assist with fundraising opportunities. For full details on how you can contribute financially, visit www.rockinghamcountyanimalshelter.org. Anyone interested in donating or volunteering can contact the fundraising coordinator, Julie Swanner, at 336-214-8495 or [email protected]. Your support is vital in order to make it happen.

Drive 4 Shelter

The Drive 4 Shelter festival on October 17 may have been the end for that event, with a Stoneville woman winning the 2006 Chevrolet Colorado truck, but don’t look for Deb Sterling to rest anytime soon. She managed the campaign and reports that the total for Drive 4 Shelter stands at just over $27,000. This includes all ticket, tee-shirt and bumper sticker sales as well as 2 telethon events and the festival on Oct. 17th. In her own words Deb says that “the best part is this was a very well rounded campaign that drew as much attention and raised as much awareness as it did money. It was much more than just raffling off a truck.” Her commitment to making the spay/neuter clinic happen for our new facility is hardly over. Her level of energy in this campaign has been an inspiration to us all and she cannot be stopped. We look forward to an increase in the momentum of community involvement that this campaign has generated, and with Deb Sterling on our side, we know it will increase.
