Education Foundation Celebrates 10 Years!

10 Years of Support by Awarding

Thanks to you, the Midway ISDEducation Foundation has given over $900,000 in donations for grants across the district over the last 10 years.

Multiple programs are awarded by the Education Foundation each year. These programs would not be avail-able without the support of local businesses and the community surrounding Midway ISD.

Grants are created by the teachers of Midway and are selected by a board of retired teachers, community members and employees of the administration.

Twice a year, the Prize Posse arrives on multiple campuses to bring “big money” to winners of Grants for Great Ideas.

This year, the Foundation will hit the one million dollar mark.

With your help, your donation will offer students of MISD additional programs to fuel minds and move education forward.

Can You Dig It?

Come Flip Your Wig

that made a difference

Agriculture and life skills help students gain responsibility and take pride in caring for their plants. They will also learn acceptance and patience in working together.

Planting the Seeds of Knowledge

Harley and Marley, the composting pigs help teach elementary students the im-portance of helping the environment by recycling leftover lunch and composting it to fertilize the on-campus garden.

Fourth grade students learn about the roots of the Lone Star State on Texas Indepence Day through line dancin’, down home cookin’, steer ropin’ and cattle drive tales.

Imagine a classroom alive with learning excitement! Students create and produce re-enactments of events in American history. Costumes, wigs, and props enable “history read” to become “history alive”. Come Flip Your Wig is used in class-room skits, music programs, reader’s theater, and for special events and holiday celebrations.

The handheld GPS units granted three years ago are still being used today in a history class combining geographical skills with historical knowledge where students use GPS coordinates to find test review an-swers.

Draw Me Into ReadingDraw Me Into Reading is a new, inventive grant that creates a imaginative environment between a parent and child inspired by the Eric Carle children’s books. While children listened to stories and worked at creation stations located in the halls, parents reversed roles with the students and learned how to read to their child in a new style.

We’re Orff and Running

that made a differenceHeavy Metal Folk

Students are all actively involved with hands-on learning. The frequent use of instruments gives students a quicker mastery of rhythmic skills and basic note values. A wonderful benefit is that the students have learned to ap-preciate each other’s musical skills.

This artistic approach (metal sculpture) to creative thinking and production teaches students that problems have more than one solution. Heavy Metal Folk is helping to bring images to reality in a non-traditional setting to increase interest in public metal art in public spaces.

Special education students exercise in the classroom us-ing Wii Fit, which helps them improve a variety of physical skills like balance, hand-eye coordination and most im-portantly, teamwork. The kids always look forward to Wii Fridays, when they get to compete with their friends in tight-rope walking, races, and

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) thermal cyclers amplify DNA by making copies that can be used for gel electrophoresis.

Translation:

The students work with material used in actual research labs. Using PCR technology allows students to stimulate DNA profiling used in forensic labs.

Thanks a Million Moving Education Forward

“Thanks a Million” is an opportunity to share to the com-munity of Woodway/Hewitt that the Midway ISD Education Foundation has given $1 million in donations in the past 10 years. If you or a business you know would like to be part of this celebration in the Fall, contact Midway ISD Education

Foundation to learn more!

Take Action to State Funding CutsAlthough the future of state funding for

education is uncertain, the good news is this: Education Foundations have the flexibility to react quickly to provide funding for specifically identified district needs. With Board of Directors’ approval, the Foundation can consider funding items that might be cut from the district’s budget in the future. While we hope that this step is not

necessary, the Foundation stands ready to promote the education of the children of MISD.

This year, special recognition went out to 48 seniors who qualified as four-year honorees. Each student received a patch as a token of appreciation for all their academic success and volunteer-ism. A special thank you

goes out to all of the PTA volunteers, the Midway ISD Education Foundation partners and Rudy’s BBQ for catering to this year’s event!
