Antenna slender, nearly 2/3 as long as body length ; in preapical segments nearly 2 1/2 times as long a wide ; first segment long, robust, somewhat club-shaped ; second short, nearly half as long as first; third slender, nearly 1 1/2 times as long as second ; fourth sub- equal to third in length and shape ; fifth nearly 1 1/2 times as long as fourth, and fifth to tenth subequal to each other in length but stouter than preceding ; eleventh slightly longer than tenth and its apex pointed. Pronotum strongly convex, transverse, nearly 1 2/3 times as wide as long, distinctly narrowed anteriorly, lateral margin nearly straight, and ante rior angle rounded, posterior angle slightly produced ; dor sal surface very sparsely and indistinctly punctate. Scutel- lum subtriangular, rounded at apex, surface nearly impunc- tate. Elytron elongate, subparallel-sided with apex rounded; surface strongly convex, distinctly punctate-striate, with in terstices very finely and remotely punctate. Length : 5.2-5.6 mm. This new species resembles Cryptocephalus oppositus Jacoby, 1908, from N. W. ABSTRACT —Sixteen species of the Chrysomelidae from Nepal, Bhutan, N. India and Pakistan aredescribed as new species, viz. Cryptocephalus eberti, Pseudostonopa flaviventris, Doryxena minor andParidea quadrimaculata from Nepal, Monolepta tatemizo from Nepal and Bhutan, Arthrotus kalimpon-ganus, Calomicrus nigriceps, Cneorane wittmeri, Japonitata ochracea, Luperus variabilis, Monoleptaatosuji, Monolepta gantokensis, Monolepta labiatella, Sastroides nigriceps and Chalaenosoma megala-yanum from N. India, and Taumacera pakistanica from Pakistan. Number of taxonomic new treatmentare proposed and number of species are newly recorded from the area or from particular countries.

PREFACE

In this paper, new or little known species of Chrysomelidae from Nepal, Bhutan and the northern territoriesof Indian subcontinent are treated. Sixteen species are described as new species. Number of taxonomic new treatment are proposed and a number of species are newly recorded from the area or from particular countries.

Subfamily Cryptocephalinae

Cryptocephalus eberti sp. nov. Fig. laSubcylindrical. Generally reddish to yellowish brown ;

pronotum with a pair of distinct blackish markings, and basal margin narrowly blackish ; elytron with fairly large humeral and postmedian markings, together with lateral margin blackish ; antenna pitchy black with two or three basalsegments brownish ; ventral surfaces with third to fifth ab

dominal segments generally pitchy black ; legs with tibiaeand tarsi generally pitchy black.

Head with vertex sparsely impressed by minute punctures, and with a distinct longitudinal impression at middle,starting from anterior margin ; fronto-clypeus sparsely impressed by fine punctures. Antenna slender, nearly 2/3 aslong as body length ; in preapical segments nearly 2 1/2

In the collection of Natural History Museum, London, a

cotype of Colaspoides bengalensis Duvivier and the holo-type of Colaspoides subrugosa Jacoby are preserved. As aresult of study of these type series, it is known that thesetwo species are same, and subrugosa Jacoby becomes asynonym of bengalensis.Pseudostonopafulviventris sp. nov. Fig. lc

Subquadrate-oval ; generally reddish brown, elytronyellowish brown ; antenna pitchy brown with four or fivebasal segments paler.

Head with fronto-clypeus and vertex distinctly andrather closely punctate and their surfaces smooth, shining.Antenna filiform, nearly 2/5 as long as length of body ; inpreapical segments nearly three times as long as wide ; firstsegment robust, somewhat club-shaped ; second slender,nearly 1 1/4 times as long as first; third nearly half as longas second ; fourth nearly 1 1/2 times as long as third andfourth to tenth subequal to each other in length but stouterthan preceding ; eleventh 1 1/4 times as long as tenth andits apex pointed. Pronotum transverse, nearly 11/3 timesas wide as long, sides strongly angulate and widest at 1/3from basal margin, and strongly narrowed anteriorly andposteriorly ; anterior margin distinctly rounded anteriorlyand posterior margin less strongly so posteriorly ; surfaceclosely impressed by strong punctures and their intersticessmooth and shining. coby, 1908, from Sikkim, but differs from this species, in

Arthrotus kalimponganus sp. nov.

Body oblong-oval. Generally ochraceous, antenna darkbrown with four or five basal segments paler.

Head with vertex convex, smooth, shining, nearly im-

punctate, and with a distinct depression in front of middle ;frontal tubercles distinctly raised, transverse, contiguous,distinctly delimited posteriorly. Antenna slender, slightlyshorter than body length, in preapical segments nearly 3 1/2times as long as wide ; first segment long, robust, club-shaped ; second short, slightly longer than wide, and nearlyhalf as long as first; third short, nearly as long as second ;fourth long, nearly 1 1/2 times as long as the length of second and third combined ; fifth slightly shorter than fourth,and fifth to tenth subequal to each other in length andshape ; eleventh slightly longer than tenth and its apexpointed. Pronotum transverse, nearly 1 3/4 times as wide aslong ; anterior margin nearly straight, posterior marginwidely rounded posteriorly ; lateral margin slightlyrounded, widest almost at middle, slightly narrowed anteriorly and more strongly so posteriorly ; anterior and posterior corners thickened, each with a setigerous pore ; dorsalsurface convex, smooth, shining, sparsely impressed byminute punctures, and with a pair of distinct depressions laterally. Scutellum subtriangular, surface smooth, shining.

Elytron broader than prothorax at base, slightly widenedposteriorly and rounded at apex ; subbasal area not distinctly raised, surface smooth, shining, distinctly and closelypunctate.

Calomicrus nigriceps sp. nov.

Generally ochraceous ; head pitchy black with vertexmostly dark brown.

Head with vertex not very convex, smooth, shining, im-

punctate ; inter-antennal space longitudinally raised ; inter-

antennal space narrow, slightly narrower than width of eye ;frontal tubercles well developed, contiguous, subtriangular,and their anterior angles inserted between antennal insertions. Antenna slender, slightly shorter than body length ;in preapical segments nearly seven times as long as wide ;first segment long, robust, somewhat club-shaped ; secondshort, nearly 1/3 as long as first; third slender, nearly twiceas long as second ; fourth nearly 1 1/2 times as long asthird, and fourth to ninth subequal to each other in lengthand shape ; tenth slightly shorter than ninth ; eleventh

slightly longer than tenth and its apex pointed. Pronotumtransverse, convex from side to side, nearly 1 1/2 times aswide as long, widest almost at middle, and gradually narrowed anteriorly and posteriorly ; anterior margin slightlyrounded anteriorly and posterior margin widely rounded

posteriorly ; anterior and posterior comers thickened, andeach with a setigerous pore ; dorsal surface sparsely im-

pressed by minute punctures. Scutellum small, sublriangu-

lar. surface smooth, nearly impunctate. Elytron hardlybroader at base than prothorax, slightly widened posteriorly,

and apex rounded ; dorsal surface closely impressed by dis

tinct punctures.

Length : 5.0-6.0 mm.

Distribution : N. India.

Holotype : Umtygar, Chedrropunjee. Magalaya, Assam,

Paratype : 1 ex., same data as the Holotype.

This new species resembles Calomicrusflavus (Jacoby,1892), from Burma, but differs from this species in havingthe pronotum less transverse and nearly 1 1/2 times as wideas long, and the head partly blackish. Also, from Calomicrus persimilis Kimoto, 1989, from Laos and Vietnam, differs in having the head partly blackish.

Genus Charaea Baly

Charaea Baly, 1878, Cist. Ent.. 2 : 376 (type species :Charaeaflaviventre Baly, 1879 : monobasic).

Malacosoma Chevrolat, 1845, Diet. Univ. d'Hist. Nat..6 : 5 (nee Huber, 1820) (type species : Chrysomela lusi-tanica Linnaeus, 1769).

Exosoma Jacoby, 1903. Trans. Ent. Soc. London, 1903 :

25 (new name for Malacosoma Chevrolat, 1845). New

Synonym.

In the type species, Charaea flaviventre Baly, 1878,

the prosternal process is elevated between the coxal cavitiesand separating them. The type of this species is preserved

in the Natural History Museum, London. Thus, Exosoma

Jacoby becames a synonym of Charaea Baly.

Cneoranewittmeri sp. nov.Generally yellowish to reddish brown ; scutellum

pitchy black ; elytron bluish black ; antenna pitchy blackwith two or three basal segments partly brownish ; meso-and metathorax and abdomen bluish black ; legs pitchyblack with femora largely yellowish to reddish brown.

Head with vertex smooth, shining, impunctate ; frontal

tubercles well developed, subtriangular, contiguous, surfacesmooth, shining, clearly separated posteriorly by a deep furrow. Generally black ; elytron ochraceous with small humeral, and large median and subapical markings black.

Head with vertex not very convex, smooth, shining, impunctate, with a small but fairly deep depression in middleof anterior margin ; frontal tubercles distinctly raised, subtriangular, contiguous, delimited from behind by a distinct,strong transverse furrow ; inter-antennal space narrow, alongitudinal ridge in middle relatively sharp. Antenna slender, long, slightly shorter than body length, in preapical segments nearly three times as long as wide ; first segmentlong, robust, club-shaped ; second short, nearly 1/4 as longas first; third nearly 2 1/2 times as long second, and third totenth subequal to each other in length and shape ; eleventhslightly longer than tenth and its apex pointed. Pronotumconvex, transverse, nearly 1 3/4 times as wide as long, widest nearly at 1/3 from anterior margin, slightly narrowed anteriorly and more strongly so posteriorly, anterior marginfeebly rounded anteriorly and posterior margin slightlyarched posteriorly ; anterior corner slightly thickened andposteriorcorner pointed, and each with a seta-bearingpore ;dorsal surface smooth, shining, nearly impunctate, and witha transverse excavation which is almost interrupted at middle. Scutellum small, convex, subtriangular, surfacesmooth, shining, impunctate. Elytron much broader at basethan prothorax, slightly widened posteriorly and rounded atapex ; surface smooth, shining, sparsley impressed by minute punctures.

Head with vertex smooth, shining, impunctate ; frontaltubercles distinctly raised, contiguous, transverse, subquad-rate, their anterior angles inserted between antennal insertions ; surface smooth, shining, impunctate. Antenna slender, nearly 3/4 as long as body length, in preapical segments nearly four times as long as wide ; first segment long,robust, somewhat club-shaped ; second, slender, short,nearly 2/3 as long as first; third long, nearly 1 1/2 times aslong as second, and third to tenth subequal to each other inlength and shape ; eleventh 1 1/2 times as long as tenth andits apex pointed. Pronotum transverse, nearly twice as wideas long, anterior margin slightly rounded anteriorly and posterior margin almost straight at middle and rectangularlyemarginate at side, lateral margin rounded, widest almost at1/3 from anterior margin, and strongly narrowed anteriorlyand less strongly so posteriorly ; anterior and posterior corners each with a setigerous pore ; surface smooth, shining,sparsely impressed by minute punctures, and with a pair ofdeep depressions laterally. Scutellum subtriangular, itsapex rounded, and closely covered with fine pubescence.Elytron with lateral margin subparallel-sided, apex rounded,surface distinctly and closely punctate, and closely coveredwith fine pubescence.
