Peter and the Wolf – Instruments

Primary Subject – Music Secondary Subject – Language Arts Grade Level 1 – 3 This is a two or three part lesson, 45 minutes each. Lesson 1

Materials needed: any book of Peter and the Wolf, various instruments such as drums,

maracas, jingle bells, glockenspiel, claves, etc. Procedure:

1. Read the story. 2. After reading the story, talk about the characters and then assign classroom

instruments to each character. Re-read the story and have students play their instruments at the appropriate time.

Lesson 2

Materials needed: a CD with music “Peter and the Wolf” by Sergei Prokofiev (I went

online and found the music.), pictures of each instrument: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horns, violin and drums. I also use costumes. Procedure:

1. Explain that just as we, the class, put instruments to the story last class time, there is a man by the name of Sergei Prokofiev who did the same thing. He used instruments from the orchestra.

2. Show the picture of each “character” and plan an example of each instrument. The copy of music that I downloaded has this section.

3. Assign students to each character. (It’s ok if you have 4 birds and 2 cats… you get the picture.)

4. Explain that the “characters” will act out the story when they hear their instrument played. To make this easier for the little guys, I hold up the picture that represents their character.

5. To introduce the concept of mime to the students, have the students to this activity silently.

It’s a lot of fun watching them pretend to be a cat, bird, wolf, duck, hunters, grandfather, or Peter. You can do a lot of things with this exercise. It is a good way to introduce orchestra instruments to the students. Even the little guys enjoy this and understand.

Peter and the Wolf Activity Music Can Tell a Story - Sequencing a Story

Teaching Objectives

Students will listen to the story of Peter and the Wolf and use sequencing skills to aid in

the comprehension of the story. *Resources/Materials

A book of Peter and the Wolf

A CD or online performance of Peter and the Wolf

A YouTube performance of Peter and the Wolf

*Pre-Assessment Activity

Ask students if there are ways to tell a story without words. (Some possible answers might be acting it out, pantomime, dance, movies, drawing, painting, etc.)

*Teaching Sequence

1. Tell the students that today they will explore how the story, Peter and the Wolf, can be told through music. Tell the student that each of the characters is represented by a different instrument. Ask the students to listen and be able to answer the following questions: Who? What? When? Where? How? Show the story of Peter and the Wolf

from YouTube. (See above URL) 2. After viewing the video, discuss the answers to the questions to aid in the

comprehension of the story. Ask students to verbalize what happens at the beginning, the middle, and the end of the story. The teacher may choose to use a master copy of the graphic organizer displayed on the board for the class to use during discussion.

*Culminating Activity

Students will individually illustrate each part of the story sequence in a 3-section storyboard. Students may use pencil, colored pencils, markers, and/or crayons. Play the music from Peter and the Wolf from the accompanying Youth Concert CD as the

students work on their sequencing project. *Extension Activity

The students will attend the Illinois symphony Orchestra concert to hear how the story is portrayed through the music.

*Evaluation

Can the students explain the who? what? when? where? and how? of the program story? Were the students able to illustrate the beginning, middle, and end of the story?

Puppetry

"Peter and the Wolf" Activity – Peter and the Wolf Puppetry Teaching Objectives

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the story of Peter and the Wolf by using puppets to act out the characters while the story is being played or read.

Resources

A recording of Peter and the Wolf, by Prokofiev

Drawings of Peter, the bird, the duck, the cat, the Grandfather, the wolf and the hunters

to color and cut out--one copy per student

Craft sticks

Glue Pre Assessment

Determine whether the students know the story of Peter and the Wolf. Teaching Sequence

1. Play the recording of Peter and the Wolf. 2. Review the characters. If possible, play the music for each character as it is discussed.

Describe how each character behaves. 3. Give a character face to each child to color and cut out. 4. Have students glue a craft stick to each character face. 5. Divide the children according to their character face.

Culminating Activity

Play Peter and the Wolf again with the children acting like their character by moving with their puppets when the appropriate music plays.

Evaluation

Did students' movements with their puppets demonstrate and understanding of the story of Peter and the Wolf?

Extension Activity

Discuss how the instrument used to demonstrate each animal portrays its character. Ex: The flute sounds happy and high, like birdsong.

Illinois Symphony Orchestra Peter and the Wolf Art Contest

In conjunction with our Peter and the Wolf concert for area school children on April 14 (Springfield) and April 15 (Bloomington), we are sponsoring an art contest. We think this contest will help enrich and enhance the concert experience by giving students an additional opportunity to “express and interpret information and ideas”1 and hope you will encourage your students to participate in the contest – individually or as a class project

Contest Guidelines Entry categories:

K-1 Grades 2-3 Grades 4-5 Grades THEME: PETER AND THE WOLF

PAPER: standard drawing paper: 9x12" white/manila DRAWING MATERIALS: Any media such as crayons, markers, paints, collage STUDENT INSTRUCTIONS

Think what you want to draw. Now start to draw.

Fill the entire page with your picture, showing something about PETER AND THE WOLF or the instruments featured in the music.

At the bottom of the drawing add one clearly written sentence about what is being pictured.

Be creative. Be neat. Be original. Do not trace!

Take your time to make your best picture. TEACHER INSTRUCTIONS

On the backside of each artwork, attach a piece of paper with the artist's first and last name, grade level, and school or have the students do this.

Bring your students’ artwork to your school’s office and have the secretary email Elaine Cousins ([email protected]) in Bloomington-Normal, and Carolyn Swanson ([email protected]) in Springfield, to arrange for pick up.

DISPLAY: The winning drawings will be displayed in the Bloomington area at the ISO’s Britain’s

Best Concert on March 18, 2016 at 7:30 PM and the Springfield area at the ISO’s Britain’s Best Concert on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 7:30 PM. PRIZE: First, second and third place in each age category will receive a ribbon and tickets to an

April, 2016 Illinois Symphony Orchestra concert Deadline for submission: March 1, 2016

All entries will be judged on originality, neatness, and the ability to convey some aspect of the Peter and the Wolf story and/or the musical instruments featured.
