Resumes & Cover Letters

Your resume and cover letter are often an employer's first contact with you, so it is essential that these documents represent

you well. The purpose of the r6sum£ and cover letter are not to get you a job, but to get you an Interview. If an employer has a

large stack of applicants for a position, he/she will often go quickly through the resume pile to eliminate those who don't meet

the minimum qualifications, or who have documents that are inadequate in appearance or content. Your goal is to present

high quality documents that will cause employers to want to contact you for an interview.

Branding Statements

The examples in this handbook have a* branding statement. In an increasingly competitive job market, this section of your

resume becomes the "hook" that gets employers to continue reading. Rather than an Objective Statement, which tells the

employer what you want, a branding statement tells the employer what you can offer them.

Here are a few examples that use a specific job title:

Entry-Level Accountant Special

Education Teacher

It may be more appropriate for you to use a broader branding statement:

Communications Specialist

Environmentalist

What if you are interested in pursuing a variety of positions, or want a more generic resume to hand out at career

fairs? You may choose to forgo the branding statement and just have a skills section. .

Skills Section

This section is alternately called Core Competencies, Strengths, Areas of Expertise, Summary of Qualifications, Professional

Skills Profile, or another similar title. This is the place to put your skill sets obtained through part-time jobs, internships,

coursework, and extracurricular activities. This is much more effective than listing courses you've taken, which may not be

meaningful to the reader. .

Many times, you have developed skills or knowledge in your major that would not otherwise be reflected on your

resume; here's your chance to include them. Many companies use are using software program to store and retrieve

candidates' documents. Your skills section presents an opportunity for you to make sure your resume is keyword-

rich, which increases the likelihood that your resume will come up when the employer searches for someone with

your skillset. /

Think in terms of the skill sets you have developed that would be most marketable to a potential employer in the field you are

interested in entering. Here are several examples:

• Statistical Analysis of Research Data • Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable

• Database Administration & Management • Photoshop

• Organization Leadership • Project Management

• Social Media Marketing • Body Composition Analysis

Experience

For each position you include on your resume, you should include the name of the company, dates of employment, and your job

title. Next, break down your description into two parts:

What you did - in brief paragraph form (five lines at the most)

How well you did it-in bullet form (maximum of five bullets)

Keep in mind that, particularly in a tough economy, you are competing with lots of other candidates, many of whom

have significant full-time experience and can show results. Even if your results thus far have been small, they are still

results. '
