event on Earth, being celebrated by more than 65 nations duringOctober 4-10 every year, since 1999 under the declaration ofUnited Nations. It is an international celebration of the contribu-tion of space science and technology to the betterment of man-kind. It provides an excellent opportunity to educate general pub-lic about space and is an ideal time for teachers to excite stu-dents about space and space related activities. The celebra-tions in each year are centered on a particular theme related tospace. The theme for World Space Week 2014 is Space: GuidingYour Way.

When is World Space Week? The start and end dates of World Space Week each year

commemorate the launch of the first human made Earth satel-lite, Sputnik 1 (October 4,1957) and the signing of the interna-tional space treaty - Outer Space Treaty - by United Nations(October, 10 1967)

the society has come to rely heavily on positioning and timingdata from large network of satellites. This dependency will in-crease even further with the increase of multiple systems on topof existing Global Navigation Satellite Systems network. In 2014we are seeing Galileo, Glonas and Beido being added to the glo-bal GPS system, while India and Japan have taken more localNavigation satellites into service.

Today we are seeing a tremondous growth of downstream appli-cations being developed for all imaginable professional and per-sonal uses. We are familiar with navigations for planes, trains, ships, trucks, cars, missiles etc. we are also using personal navi-gation systems like handheld GPS device or a smart phone withGPS. The widespread use of this technology in agriculture, trad-ing, scientific reaserch, transportation, defence and other areasof societal development ascertain its relevance and role in mod-ern society.
