How to Communicate the Way You Feel.

* Present forms of the verb “to be” are the

only exceptions, in which letter “»” is

pronounced “e - hen”, instead of “ye- yellow”

at the beginning of the word.

The verb “to be” in Armenian comprises the idea of person and number, that’s why the personal pronouns in the sentences are often omitted.

e.g. L³í (lav ) »Ù: I am well.

The Definite Article.

The sounds - Á and - Ý after the names ²Ýݳ - ²ÝݳÝ, ¾ñÇϳ - ¾ñÇϳÝ, ²ñÙ»Ý - ²ñÙ»ÝÁ

are the Definite Articles. These articles correspond to the English Definite Article the. They are used to

differentiate definite nouns from indefinite ones.

There are two Definite Articles in Armenian` -Á and -Ý.

• - Á is added to the words which end in consonants:

e.g. ïáõÝ (house) - ïáõÝÁ (the house)

• -Ý is added to the words which end in vowels:

e.g ϳïáõ(cat) - ϳïáõÝ (the cat)

• When the next word starts with a vowel, the article -Á is changed into -Ý:

e.g. ºë ²ñÙ»ÝÝ (instead of ²ñÙ»ÝÁ) »Ù: I am Armen.

In this case the article -Ý is pronounced together with the first vowel of the next word.

So the sentence above will be pronounced this way:

Yes Armen nem.

In Armenian the Definite Article is also used with proper nouns: e.g. ²Ýݳ - ²ÝݳÝ, ²ñÙ»Ý -

²ñÙ»ÝÁ:

Zero Article corresponds to the English Indefinite Article a(an): e.g. ïáõÝ (a house).
