“What Price Peace?” by Chris Hudson

Chris Hudson's new book What Price Peace? looks at issues arising from the First World War to help pupils explore wider themes, as they gain insight into events that took place from 1914 to 1918. What Price Peace? provides ten units of classroom material and three assemblies for 5–11s based around the theme of the First World War.

A century on, with British armed forces continuing to serve in trouble spots around the world, study of the ‘Great War’ offers children the opportunity to engage with powerful issues of faith and belief, helping them to think through questions such as: Is fighting always wrong? How can we work out what is true? How should bullying be resisted? Are some people worth more than others? How do we deal with fear, pain and suffering? Can we really love our enemies as Jesus said? Each unit contains background information, an imaginative retelling of a real-life event, and cross-curricular activities related to RE, History, Literacy and PSHE/Citizenship.

Peacebuilders in India

'Peacebuilders - Children for Peace' is a programme by the United Reformed and Methodist Churches in Great Britain, working with the Church of North India and the Hyderabad-based Henry Martyn Institute for research, inter-faith relations and reconciliation.

This educational film inspired by Ghandi and commissioned by the Methodist Church Britain as part of their Peacebuilders Campaign screened at International Conferences in Delhi, Hyderabad and Calcutta. It was also used as part of their Peacebuilders educational package produced in 2007. The film looks at building peace in the world through the eyes of children in India.

Representatives from the Methodist and United Reformed Churches visited India to ask children what they think needs to be done to build a more peaceful future.

Children are not often asked for their opinions on the big issues of life, but church partners in India and the UK have decided that children are the perfect place to start when talking about peace.

Starting with groups of children, the churches aim to share knowledge and experiences, working together towards peace on many levels from local to international.

"In today's society, it is so clear that our communities - and the whole world - need peace. Peacebuilders is about taking small, and perhaps some larger, steps for peace. We believe that by working together and using our enthusiasm and experience we can make more peace, day by day."

Groups are encouraged to make their own 'peace boxes' featuring the Peacebuilders logo in which they can put ideas for making peace a reality in their communities. The box will move round other groups in the community so that people can share and add to the suggestions, hopes and prayers.
