How-to Prepare for Baby.

BABY ON THE BRAIN?Few things can change your life more than having a baby and determining if you are ready for this baby step or leap can seem overwhelming. One thing you can do to give your baby the best start in life is to get your own health under control before you get pregnant. You should have a complete physical check-up three months to a year before you start trying to conceive.

Attend a pregnancy information class to help you plan for a healthy pregnancy and baby.

Pregnancy 101: Pondering Pregnancy? Tuesday, June 17 n 6:30 p.m. n www.swEvents.org

HANDLE WITH CARE.Some babies are born with special medical needs and are more fragile then others.

For those fragile babies, many birthing centers have neonatal intensive care units (NICU). These units provide expert, around-the-clock care for newborn babies who are ill or born prematurely. Between six and ten percent of newborns spend some time in a NICU. Before you select a birthing center, know about their NICU and the care they can offer.

Did You Know? PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center is affiliated with Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. They provide perinatal consultations for high risk pregnancies in Maternal Fetal Medicine and expert neonatology services for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Watch a video at www.peacehealth.org/southwest/birth to learn more about the NICU and other birthing services.

TO BREASTFEED OR NOT.Choosing to breastfeed or bottle feed can seem complicated. Learning the benefits of breastfeeding and the proper technique can help you make the decision that’s right for you and your baby. Here are some benefits:

1. Complete nutrition. Breast milk has the perfect mix of protein, vitamins and fat that babies need to grow.

2. It has antibodies. These help the baby build a strong immune system that can fight infections, viruses and bacteria.

3. It’s tummy-friendly. It is easier to digest than the cow protein.

4. It lowers the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Studies show that the risk might be up to 50 percent lower.

5. Its benefits may last. For moms, it lowers their risk for type 2 diabetes, breast cancer, ovarian cancer and postpartum depression.

EXPECTING? 6 SIMPLE TIPS.

ARE ALL BIRTHING CENTERS THE SAME?Women are filled with questions as they prepare for the transition to motherhood. Should I use cloth diapers or disposable? Bottle or breastfeed?

When it comes to deciding where to have your baby, there are lots of questions, too. Here are some helpful questions to guide you through your choices:

n Does the birthing center have classes and support groups during pregnancy and after birth?

n Does the birthing center have breastfeeding classes and support?

n Is the birthing center staff certified?

n Does the birthing center have high quality scores?

n Does the birthing center offer water births?

n Do you have to move rooms after birth?

n Does the birthing center have an onsite Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and what level is the NICU?

Get to know your local birthing center before you deliver.

GET GRANDPARENTS TO HELP.Those first few weeks with a new baby can be a real shock to the system. It can feel like you’re suddenly trying to juggle 100 things at once, while being the most exhausted you’ve ever been. You need help, but sometimes it can be difficult to ask for it. Talk to the future grandparents about your concerns and how they can help before the baby arrives.

Do you know someone who’s becoming a new grandparent? Tell them about this fun, informative, free class.
