This year the Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce & Industry is excited to present the 50th Annual Harold Ogilvie Musca-Fu-Da (Muscatine Fun Day) Golf Outing. This year’s event will be held Tuesday, September 9, at the Muscatine Municipal Golf Course. Musca-Fu-Da began in 1964 as a golf outing to promote our community and to invite business representatives to come to Muscatine to see what our town has to offer. The outcome from such an invitation would hopefully be a catalyst for bringing more people and businesses to our community. Today we can thank Harold Ogilvie for paving the way with his Economic Development efforts as he was a member of the Muscatine Chamber of Commerce and the founder of the Muscatine Development Corporation. Harold belonged to countless clubs and organizations such as the Kiwanis International-Muscatine Club where he was the District Lt. Governor. He was a member of the Great River Road Association and the Muscatine Bridge Commission during construction of the new High Bridge. He also served on boards for many other organizations, such as First National Bank for over 40 years. As a dedicated member of the community, it is no wonder Harold Ogilvie’s name is on the banner year after year. Traditionally, Musca-Fu-Da was a way for Muscatine companies to encourage other businesses to expand to Muscatine and for existing Muscatine companies to cultivate relationships with their out-of-town suppliers and business associates. What a beautiful night for a Business After-Hours! July’s hosts were Rebuilding Together Muscatine County and Crossroads, Inc. 1424B and 1424 Houser Street, Muscatine. Guests were able to walk around both campuses, as the drinks and desserts were provided by Rebuilding Together at their location, and the taco dinner was provided by Crossroads at their location. Guests enjoyed the beautiful weather and the short walk between the buildings gave them opportunity to socialize with old friends and new ones.

Rebuilding Together’s Executive Director Frank Iliff took guests on a tour of the organization’s facility and attendees got a feel for what RTMC does for the community. Linda Wilson, Executive Director at Crossroads, mingled with guests while serving them their taco dinners. When everybody was gathered in Crossroads’ building, Frank Iliff and Linda Wilson spoke to the crowd about their respective organizations and the impact that they have on the community.

Local SCORE Chapter Updates

Popular SCORE Online Workshops When Social Goes Local Listen anytime! Using Social Media to Grow Your Business with SCORE and HP Listen anytime! Savvy Social Media with Jeanne Rossomme Listen anytime!

Robbin Block has been evangelizing the benefits of marketing strategy for over 25 years. Part geek, part creative, she’s brought her in-depth knowledge of the Web and its strategic application to business to companies of all sizes and to thousands of readers via her book, Social Persuasion: Making Sense of Social Media for Small Business. This month, Robbin discusses some of social media’s many implications on the crafting and execution of winning small business marketing plans.

What’s the biggest misperception about social media’s role in marketing, and what should entrepreneurs really be doing as they map out a new small business?

Social media can’t solve all your marketing problems. For a business, it needs to be thought of like any other communication tool. You need to understand the fundamentals of marketing — who’s your target audience, where do they get their information, what do they care about, etc.— to find the right media mix that makes sense for you.

What is the most underutilized non-social media marketing method today?

By far, it’s public relations. Many people are afraid of it, or don’t know what it is. Instead they’ll spend money on poorly placed ads that will almost always fail.

What are two or three go-to resources for finding data about your market?

The U.S. Census. A lot of valuable information from the latest census is now being released. Industry associations. Industry trade publications and consumer magazines. Their media kits have great

information about their readers’ demographics and interests.

And many more resources are available at my website, www.blockbeta.com.

Coupons are gaining popularity as a means for luring potential customers. If this option appears right for a small business, what is needed to help turn coupon users into regular customers?

Understand what attracted them in the first place. People who just want a deal are tough to convert. But many customers use coupons to “sample the goods.” To get them to come back and pay full price, use strategic messaging at each touchpoint to help push them down the purchase path. This messaging can be done verbally, through printed materials, online, and even reinforced with “gifts”.

Can you provide an example of how this works?

A Pilates studio I work with has used social coupons to bring in new customers, offering a 7-week program at a discounted rate. Each week, the studio reinforces the benefits of membership and the results the customer would get if they continue taking their classes. Communications include a comprehensive orientation, an introductory gift of a branded water bottle, follow-on emails, etc. It’s a planned program designed to positively reinforce the customer experience. This in combination with excellent service may be enough to convince the customer to continue at full price.

Why should entrepreneurs work with a SCORE small business mentor to develop and monitor their marketing plans?

Marketing needs to be flexible, because the environment within which a business operates is always changing. And the business itself is evolving as new opportunities or threats come to light. A SCORE mentor can help filter the information and focus the entrepreneur on what’s important.

Hello SCORE followers. An internet presence is worthy of discussion this month. I know that most folks who come to meet with SCORE mentors now already have, or plan to have, their

internet sites up and running. Then, the question to ask would be how to get the most of the site itself. The SCORE website runs a Question and Answer section about SEO or Search Engine Optimization.

From the SCORE website:

Q: How important is an active presence on social media sites to SEO?A: It’s all speculation… but we know that

search engines like Google®, Bing® and Yahoo!® can and will crawl social media sites looking for links and information. If you participate in social media, chances are that Google and the other search engines will be able to find those links and try to establish a relationship. Similarly, having social media buttons on your pages helps tremendously. According to SearchMetrics, the most powerful ranking factors for the past two years have been Facebook® “likes” and pluses on Google+™.

Q: What are two of today’s top trends in the SEO world?A: The two biggest trends in SEO today are content and social media. Search

engines want the most relevant and natural result to be at the top of their pages. They are also looking for ranking signals that can’t be faked or gamed. Social media is a fantastic tool that can be harnessed for that purpose.

Content, on the other hand, can be faked, scraped, and generated. The great thing about Google is that it’s getting smarter at detecting the fake information. You can see evidence of this when you do Google searches and it highlights similar words to the ones you were using. This makes it harder to fake content and in turn, provides better search results for the average user.

Today, River’s Edge Gallery sits perched atop West Third Street hill overlooking the Mighty Mississippi, in a beautiful three-story mansion built in the 1880’s. The location and the ownership of River’s Edge Gallery has changed over the years, but the dedication to providing Muscatine with a custom frame and art gallery has not changed.

The story of River’s Edge Gallery began in 1987, when it was founded by Larry and Sue Koehrsen. Originally the gallery was housed in the Samuel M. McKibben house which is now the GMCCI office. Built around 1866, the McKibben house has extensive views of the Mississippi River, which no doubt influenced the naming of River’s Edge Gallery. In 2007 River’s Edge Gallery was bought by Joel and Linda Smyers, who are the present owners.

River’s Edge Gallery provides custom design, framing and installation for artwork for both residential and commercial customers. There is a variety of artwork for sale, from ceramics and hand-made wood furniture to original and reproduction paintings, prints and art posters. They also offer photo restoration and art reproduc-tion as well as high-quality, large format digital printing on a variety of fine art papers and canvases.

Not only is River’s Edge Gallery a custom frame and art gallery, but they are also a unique live music venue. Five to six times a year, they host national touring acts to an audience no bigger than 60 people, in a setting where the crowd gets to be close to the performers. This provides an opportunity to see a musical act in a “storytellers” setting where musicians can engage the audience when not performing. These “house concerts” are small and intimate and guests are encouraged to bring their own food and drinks to share on the community table.

Being a member of GMCCI allows River’s Edge Gallery to stay in touch with other businesses around Musca-tine and helps to promote the gallery and their business. River’s Edge Gallery actively participates and supports local charities and organizations with donations of artwork and custom services.

Whether you visit River’s Edge Gallery to get a picture framed, buy a piece of artwork, listen to live music or tour the three-story mansion, River’s Edge Gallery is sure to have something to satisfy your creative side.

Investing In MuscatineBy Greg Jenkins, President & CEO, Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce & Industry

Existing businesses provide the majority of economic growth in a community and GMCCI’s Business Retention and Expansion program is in place to support existing business. The focus of the strategy for existing businesses is to build a line of communication between businesses, GMCCI and public entities. GMCCI can assist businesses to grow by helping them to access financial incentive programs, helping to determine land use, and providing crucial demographic information on the area workforce. We are also able to direct businesses to additional business supporting entities.

A key to our Business Retention and Expansion Program is to visit every primary business at least once annually. A primary business is one which does not rely on the local economy for its survival. These visits are a key part of GMCCI staying connected to the businesses of Muscatine. These calls are intended to be a two-way dialogue that provides us an opportunity to learn more about the businesses of Muscatine, their needs, and their concerns and hopes for the community. We also gain an understanding of the possibilities for expansion so we might provide support of their company’s efforts. During these calls we share our activities and discuss how we may be able to help them or our community.

There has been significant capital investment in our community to-date since 2012, with a total of $77.1 million issued in building permits. As part of the Business Retention and Expansion program, GMCCI, along with business, city, county and state officials, was directly engaged in projects that totaled $41 million or 57% of the total expenditures for business and industry permits. The expansion projects supported by GMCCI are expected to generate or retain 254 jobs.

In addition to the permits issued to-date, GMCCI is actively engaged in the Muscatine Reinvestment District development of the Riverview Suites Project. This $41 million project will generate 100 jobs and bring exciting development to downtown Muscatine. We look forward to the continuing work to bring this project to fruition.

We strive to understand and respond to the needs of our customers so that Muscatine benefits from the success of business. Job growth, increased taxable valuations and the many, many community development projects contributed by businesses make Muscatine such a great community, and it is our intent to continue to support the growth and enhancement of our community through these efforts.

Leadership Muscatine Now Seeking ParticipantsLeadership Muscatine is about to kick-off its 27th year and we are looking for people with drive and the ability to want to enhance their community leadership skills, while also interested in serving in a leadership capacity in Muscatine.

Leadership Muscatine is co-sponsored by GMCCI and Muscatine Community College. Since its inception in 1988, over 500 participants have graduated from the program. A significant

portion of the graduates are still actively involved in the Muscatine Community.

Participation in the program requires between 75 and 95 hours committed to an individual or group project over a seven-month period. Participants, whether new or life-long residents of Muscatine, will gain a better understanding of the community as well as the different organizations and leaders that make Muscatine an exceptional community.

The Class of 2014-2015 will begin their journey with an orientation reception on Friday, October 3rd, 2014 and will continue with up to two sessions a month concluding in the Spring of 2015. Tuition for the program is $500.00. Partial scholarships are available by contacting the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine. Registration is due Friday, August 29, 2014.

If you have any questions please contact GMCCI at 563-263-8895 or by email [email protected]. See the registration and nomination form in this issue of Pearl City Progress to get your start today!
